  • Historical Dictionary of Eritrea

Rowman & Littlefield Historical Dictionary of Eritrea

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn 1991, Eritrea won a 30-year war for independence from Ethiopia, and in 1993, it was recognized as Africa’s newest nation after more than a century of conquest and occupation by a succession of external powers that included the Ottomans, Egypt, Italy, Great Britain and Ethiopia. Each had left its mark, while fostering a deep distrust of outsiders and a fierce commitment to Eritrea’s separate political identity. Eritrea and Ethiopia slipped into a chronic state of no-peace-no-war that kept the entire Horn of Africa off-balance for nearly two decades, the standoff ended in 2018 when a newly installed Ethiopian prime minister reached out to Eritrea and set in motion a rapid-fire series of talks among the states of the African Horn that broke down long-standing barriers and raised hopes for a new era of regional peace and cooperation. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Eritrea contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Eritrea. • The First English Dictionary 1604: Robert

Bodleian Library The First English Dictionary 1604: Robert

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHere is a real treat for lovers of English – the very first dictionary in our language. Contrary to popular opinion, this honour goes not to Samuel Johnson, whose definitive tome appeared in 1755, but to Robert Cawdrey, who published his Table Alphabeticall in 1604. Written for the benefit of Ladies, Gentlewomen or any other unskilfull persons, this was not a book for scholars but was aimed squarely at the non-fiction best-seller list of its day. It is a treasure-house of meaning, bristling with arresting and eminently quotable definitions. For example geometrie is the ‘art of measuring the earth’, and hecticke is ‘inflaming the hart, and soundest parts of the bodie’, while barbarian is ‘a rude person’, and a concubine is a ‘harlot, or light huswife’. Cawdrey did set out to create an exhaustive catalogue of the language but rather a guide which would unlock the mystery of hard usual English wordes, borrowed from the Hebrew, Greeke, Latine, or French for educated gentlefolk encountering new words which English was then absorbing at a phenomenal rate. Every entry in this list of 2,543 words sheds interesting light on early modern life and the development of the language. This edition, prepared from the sole surviving copy of the first edition, now in the Bodleian Library, also includes an extensive introduction setting the dictionary in its historical, social and literary context, and exploring the unusual and interesting career of its little-known author. Published eight years ahead of the first of the first Italian dictionary and 35 years ahead of the first French dictionary, this work shows Cawdrey as a man ahead of his time and foreshadows the phenomenal growth of English and its eventual triumph as the new global lingua franca.Trade Review"It is magicke, inchaunting, and makyth me to maffle and bleate. A fulgent thing, deserving of great claritude.”—Stephen Fry "Previously, no-one had imagined what today seems so blindingly obvious, that a dictionary should run seamlessly, from A-Z … It is difficult to overemphasize its importance to the English language."—Simon Winchester “This is a gnarled, rude, fierce old dictionary and utterly without ‘calliditie’ (‘craftiness, or deceit’). It may not provide much ‘clavicorde’ (‘mirth’) and it certainly ‘maffles’ (‘stammers’), but it also ‘inchaunts’ (‘bewitches’).”—New York Sun “Wordsmiths, your ship has come in: A new book—well, sort of new—should keep you pleasantly perusing till dawn. . . . Few books are as delightful as this compendium, thought to be the first alphabetical dictionary.”—Julia Keller, Chicago Tribune

  • Historical Dictionary of Medieval China

Rowman & Littlefield Historical Dictionary of Medieval China

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe crucial period of Chinese history, 168-979, falls naturally into contrasting phases. The first phase, also known as that of ''early medieval China,'' is an age of political decentralization. Following the breakup of the Han empire, China was plunged into civil war and fragmentation and stayed divided for nearly four centuries. The second phase started in 589, during the Sui dynasty, when China was once again brought under a single government. Under the Sui, the bureaucracy was revitalized, the military strengthened, and the taxation system reformed. The fall of the Sui in 618 gave way to the even stronger Tang dynasty, which represents an apogee of traditional Chinese civilization. Inheriting all the great institutions developed under the Sui, the Tang made great achievements in poetry, painting, music, and architecture. The An Lushan rebellion, which also took place during Tang rule, brought about far-reaching changes in the socioeconomic, political, and military arenas. What tranTrade ReviewCovering an extensive period—from the end of Han in the late second century to the beginning of Song in the late tenth—this updated edition features historical figures, places, events, movements, agencies and offices, works of art and literature, and more. The volume contains maps of China during the various dynastic periods, a lengthy introduction, a chronology, and other supporting materials. Historian Xiong author of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty: His Life, Times, and Legacy, has added more than 1,500 new entries with extensive cross-references to the approximately 5,000 entries of the 2009 first edition (reissued in paperback as The A to Z of Medieval China in 2010). The author has also expanded the chronology and updated the bibliography with recent scholarship. Entries are typically a few lines to a half page long, and each provides the Chinese characters for the term, approximate dates when relevant, geographical area, a brief definition or explanation, and reference to Chinese sources when applicable. Thematic entries, many new in this second edition, are longer—from a half page (e.g., ‘nobility’) to three pages (e.g., ‘literature’). The work is a commendable undertaking and a valuable reference tool for Chinese studies. Summing Up: Recommended. Advanced students through researchers/faculty. * CHOICE *This two-volume book is now in its second edition, and is perhaps the most comprehensive dictionary on medieval China available. Over 1,500 new entries have been added and errors from the first edition have been corrected. More coverage of county and local governments has been included, more historical figures added, substantial thematic content on a number of topics has been expanded, homonymic place-names have been separated, extensive cross-references with see and see also related terms are now available, the chronology and the bibliography have been lengthened, and a pronunciation guide for difficult Chinese characters is now available. Eleven maps are included in the front of the book, along with an extensive index to locate important cities, towns, etc. in medieval China from 262 C.E. to the mid-10th century. An appendix includes the various reigns from the late second century to the 10th century, listed alphabetically rather than chronologically. Overall, this is an essential reference guide to medieval China, and would be appropriate in any college and university library. * American Reference Books Annual *Table of ContentsEditor’s Foreword (Jon Woronoff) Preface Pronunciation Guide for Difficult Chinese Characters Conventions, Symbols, and Oft-used Chinese Terms Abbreviations Map 1. • A Dictionary of Modern English Usage

Oxford University Press A Dictionary of Modern English Usage

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis''What grammarians say should be has perhaps less influence on what shall be than even the more modest of them realize ...'' No book had more influence on twentieth-century attitudes to the English language in Britain than Henry Fowler''s Dictionary of Modern English Usage. It rapidly became the standard work of reference for the correct use of English in terms of choice of words, grammar, and style. Much loved for his firm opinions, passion, and dry humour, Fowler has stood the test of time and is still considered the best arbiter of good practice. In this new edition of the original Dictionary, David Crystal goes beyond the popular mythology surrounding Fowler''s reputation to retrace his method and arrive at a fresh evaluation of his place in the history of linguistic thought. With a wealth of entertaining examples he looks at Fowler''s stated principles and the tensions between his prescriptive and descriptive temperaments. He shows that the Dictionary does a great more than make normative recommendations and express private opinion. In addition he offers a modern perspective on some 300 entries, in which he shows how English has changed since the 1920s. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford''s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
