Book Synopsis Recent years have witnessed a rapid increase in the fields of cultural heritage studies and community archaeology worldwide with expanding discussions about the mechanisms and consequences of community participation. This trend has brought to the forefront debates about who owns the past, who has knowledge, and how heritage values can be shared more effectively with communities who then ascribe meaning and value to heritage materials. Globalization forces have created a need for contextualizing knowledge to address complex issues and collaboration across and beyond academic disciplines, using more integrated methodologies that include the participation of non-academics and increased stakeholder involvement. Successful programs provide power sharing mechanisms and motivation that effect more active involvement by lay persons in archaeological fieldwork as well as interpretation and information dissemination processes. With the contents of this volume, we envision community archaeology to go beyond descriptions of outreach and public engagement to more critical and reflexive actions and thinking. The volume is presented in the context of the evolution of cultural heritage studies from the 20th century “expert approach” to the 21st century “people-centered approach,” with public participation and community involvement at all phases of the decision-making process. The volume contains contributions of 28 chapters and 59 authors, covering an extensive geographical range, including Africa, South America, Central America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, North America, and Australasia. Chapters provide exemplary cases in a growing lexicon of public archaeology where power is shared within frameworks of voluntary activism in a wide diversity of cooperative settings and stakeholder interactions.Trade Review“The next dimension is to develop heightened clarity on the goals of community/public archaeology, the metrics by which successful impacts will be measured, and the techniques that can be used to measure them. The next dimension will take us beyond archaeology as it was to archaeology as it must become. For that, the essential contribution from Jameson and Musteaţă’s book is that it delivers a capstone to past publications and in so doing, begins to make the next dimension conceivable.” (Peter G. Gould, American Antiquity, Vol. 85 (3), 2020)“The papers in the volume highlight that public involvement has a two-way benefit and that increased stakeholder involvement, and power-sharing mechanisms that encourage greater participation by lay people, benefit archaeology and heritage practice in multiple ways.” (Antiquity, Vol. 94, 2020)Table of ContentsPART 1. • Regulating Free Speech in a Digital Age: Hate,

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Regulating Free Speech in a Digital Age: Hate,

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisHateful thoughts and words can lead to harmful actions like the March 2019 terrorist attack on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. In free, open and democratic societies, governments cannot justifiably regulate what citizens think, feel, believe or value, but do have a duty to protect citizens from harmful communication that incites discrimination, active hostility and violence.Written by a public policy advisor for fellow practitioners in politics and public life, this book discusses significant practical and moral challenges regarding internet governance and freedom of speech, particularly when responding to content that is legal but harmful. Policy makers and professionals working for governmental institutions need to strike a fair balance between protecting from harm and preserving the right to freedom of expression. And because merely passing laws does not solve complex social problems, governments need to invest, not just regulate. Governments, big tech and the private sector, civil society, individual citizens and the fourth estate all have roles to play, and counter-speech is everyone’s responsibility. This book tackles hard questions about internet governance, hate speech, cancel culture and the loss of civility, and illustrates principled pragmatism applied to perplexing policy problems. Furthermore, it presents counter-speech strategies as alternatives and complements to censorship and criminalisation.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Introduction: After Christchurch.- Part I. Regulating Harmful Digital Communication.- Chapter 2. Challenges in Regulating Online Content.- Chapter 3. The Business Models of Big Tech.- Chapter 4. Deplatforming and Democratic Legitimacy.- Part II. Hate, Harm and the Limits of Censorship.- Chapter 5. Regulating “Hate Speech”.- Chapter 6. Free Speech and its Limits.- Chapter 7. Hate, Harm and the Liberal State.- Chapter 8. Striking a Fair Balance When Regulating Free Speech.- Chapter 9. Counter-speech is Everyone’s Responsibility.- Chapter 10. • When Words Betray Us: Language, the Brain, and

Springer Nature Switzerland AG When Words Betray Us: Language, the Brain, and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents a journey into how language is put together for speaking and understanding and how it can come apart when there is injury to the brain. The goal is to provide a window into language and the brain through the lens of aphasia, a speech and language disorder resulting from brain injury in adults. This book answers the question of how the brain analyzes the pieces of language, its sounds, words, meaning, and ultimately puts them together into a unitary whole. While its major focus is on clinical, experimental, and theoretical approaches to language deficits in aphasia, it integrates this work with recent technological advances in neuroimaging to provide a state-of-the-art portrayal of language and brain function. It also shows how current computational models that share properties with those of neurons allow for a common framework to explain how the brain processes language and its parts and how it breaks down according to these principles. Consideration will also be given to whether language can recover after brain injury or when areas of the brain recruited for speaking, understanding, or reading are deprived of input, as seen with people who are deaf or blind. No prior knowledge of linguistics, psychology, computer science, or neuroscience is assumed. The informal style of this book makes it accessible to anyone with an interest in the complexity and beauty of language and who wants to understand how it is put together, how it comes apart, and how language maps on to the brain.Table of ContentsChapter1: Introduction.- Chapter2: Getting Started.- Chapter3: The sounds of language.- Chapter4: The words of language: the mental lexicon.- Chapter5: What does it mean: semantics.- Chapter6: Putting words together: Syntax.- Chapter7: Why two hemispheres: the role of the right hemisphere in language.- Chapter8: The plastic brain.- Chapter9: Wrapping up.
