Book SynopsisThis companion to the Gem Calorie Counter is a handy portable guide to carbohydates in everyday foods. Clearly laid-out tables give details of net carbohydrates per portion (slice, biscuit, apple) making it quick and simple to use. Reducing carbohydrates and following a high protein diet has become a popular and effective way of losing weight and keeping those extra pounds off. The key to following such a diet is to control your carbohydrate intake. In addition to the net carb contents of everyday foods this guide gives calories, protein, and fat. Information is given per portion rather than 100g, meaning that there is less working out involved. Book SynopsisLinguistics falls in the gap between arts and science, on the edges of which the most fascinating discoveries and the most important problems are found. Rather than following the conventional organization of many contemporary introductions to the subject, the author of this stimulating guide begins his discussion with the oldest, ''arts'' end of the subject and moves chronologically through to the newest research - the ''science'' aspects. A series of short thematic chapters look in turn at such areas as the prehistory of languages and their common origins, language and evolution, language in time and space (the nature of change inherent in language), grammars and dictionaries (how systematic is language?), and phonetics. Explication of the newest discoveries pertaining to language in the brain completes the coverage of all major aspects of linguistics from a refreshing and insightful angle. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Book SynopsisBY THE SUNDAY TIMES NO.1 BESTSELLING AUTHORThe perfect gift for anyone who has ever wondered about the unpredictable origins and etymologies of our Christmas customs! For something that happens every year of our lives, we really don''t know much about Christmas. We don''t know that the date we celebrate was chosen by a madman, or that Christmas, etymologically speaking, means Go away, Christ. We''re oblivious to the fact that the advent calendar was actually invented by a Munich housewife to stop her children pestering her for a Christmas countdown. And we would never have guessed that the invention of crackers was merely a way of popularising sweet wrappers. Luckily, like a gift from Santa himself, Mark Forsyth is here to unwrap this fundamentally funny gallimaufry of traditions and oddities, making it all finally make sense - in his wonderfully entertaining wordy way.''Witty and revelatory. Blooming brilliant'' Raymond Briggs ''Everything we ever thought about Christmas is wrong! Great stuff'' Matthew ParrisTrade ReviewWitty and revelatory. Book SynopsisIf a gorilla walked out into the middle of a basketball pitch, you'd notice it. Wouldn't you? If a serious violent crime took place just next to you, you'd remember it, right? The Invisible Gorilla is a fascinating look at the unbelievable, yet routine tricks that your brain plays on you.In an award-winning and groundbreaking study, psychologists Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons asked volunteers to watch a 60-second film of a group of students playing basketball and told them to count the number of passes made. About halfway through, a woman dressed head to toe in a gorilla outfit slowly moved to centre screen, beat her chest at the camera, and casually strolled away. Unbelievably, almost half of the volunteers missed the gorilla. As this astonishing and utterly unique new book demonstrates, exactly the same kind of mental illusion that causes people to miss the gorilla can also explain why many other things, including why:honest eyewitness testimony can convict innocent defendantsTrade Review"Entertaining and illuminating"Dan Ariely, New York Times bestselling author of Predictably Irrational "A riveting romp across the landscape of our psychological misperceptions."Nicholas A. • Classical Latin

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Classical Latin

Book SynopsisOffers a grounding in Latin that combines the traditional grammatical method with the reading approach. This title contains chapters which include various exercises that reinforce the grammar and morphology.Trade ReviewTo all my Latin colleagues: switch to this book! I have taught from half a dozen different Latin texts over the years, and have always wished there was something else I could be using. Finally that something else has arrived! I was pleasantly surprised at its accessibility, liveliness, and clarity. I have used it for two years now at the University of Delaware with great results. It fits extremely well into a two-semester elementary program. Each chapter features clear explanations of a manageable amount of material, with a variety of exercises ranging from simple to difficult, so the instructor can select what to give the students. The most capable students can do more difficult exercises, the average student is challenged but not overwhelmed, and the students with weaker language abilities are able to make it through the language requirement successfully. I have told all my friends in the field to try this book! --Lynn Sawlivich, University of DelawareThese days there are two types of Latin course. One of them is the traditional course and it is into this category that McKeown's book falls. The other is the inductive course, best known from the Cambridge and (less uncompromisingly) the Oxford Latin courses. McKeown's book is an admirable embodiment of the traditional methodology. . . . As could be anticipated from the author of the lively Cabinet of Roman Curiosities (2010), he eases the diet of rote learning and sentences with strong and varied injections of information about the Latin language and Roman life that entertain as much as they stimulate. I cannot think of any other course that comes close to McKeown's in this respect: we have a wonderful melange of poetry, etymology, maxims, facts bizarre and sober, in addition to much else. The book is splendidly produced. Grammar is helpfully laid out; constructions are explained with notable clarity: it is obvious that the material has been constantly redrafted in the course of repeated testing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where McKeown teaches, and it is no doubt a college market for which it will prove best adapted. It could be completed in a (pretty intensive) year. You will not do better than McKeown's book if you want the traditional approach. --James Morwood, [Wadham College], Oxford University, in The Classical ReviewThe publication of McKeown's Classical Latin is very exciting. It is going to be fun to teach from! It is thorough yet not pedantic; it covers all the important material in a logical fashion, and it does not have the silliness that is found in some elementary Latin texts. I am planning to adopt it for Elementary Latin (a year course, in which I think McKeown will fit very nicely) the next time I teach the class. It will be a great improvement over the text I have used for years and years. --Jane Crawford, Professor of Classics, University of Virginia

Profile Books Ltd How Language Began: The Story of Humanity’s

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn his groundbreaking new book Daniel Everett seeks answers to questions that have perplexed thinkers from Plato to Chomsky: when and how did language begin? What is it? And what is it for? Daniel Everett confounds the conventional wisdom that language originated with Homo sapiens 150,000 years ago and that we have a 'language instinct'. Drawing on evidence from a wide range of fields, including linguistics, archaeology, biology, anthropology and neuroscience, he shows that our ancient ancestors, Homo erectus, had the biological and mental equipment for speech one and half million years ago, and that their cultural and technological achievements (including building ocean-going boats) make it overwhelmingly likely they spoke some kind of language. How Language Began sheds new light on language and culture and what it means to be human and, as always, Daniel Everett spices his account with incident and anecdote. His book is convincing, arresting and entertaining.Trade ReviewVery few books on the biological and cultural origin of humanity can be ranked as classics. I believe that Daniel Everett's How Language Began will be one of them. -- Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard UniversityHow Language Began occupies a rare literary space that explains complex issues clearly to general readers while being an original contribution to scholarship...the arguments he marshals and insights he provides are impressive...anyone interested in language would gain from reading this book. -- Oliver Kamm * Times *Ambitious...the subject-matter is completely enthralling...Everett is at the very top of his intellectual game. -- Harry Ritchie * Spectator *Important and fascinating -- Adrian Woolfson * Prospect *Everett is skilled at leavening an intellectually challenging treatise with humor ... A worthy book for general readers * Kirkus Reviews *When I first became interested in cultural evolution, cognitive revolutionaries would say that Noam Chomsky had proved that an innate language acquisition device was the key to linguistics. Daniel Everett is a leader of the counterrevolution that is putting culture and cultural evolution back at the center of linguistics, and cognition more generally, where I think it belongs. How Language Began is an accessible account of the case for a culture-centered theory of language. -- Peter Richerson, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Environmental Science and Policy, University of California DavisPraise for Language: The Cultural Tool: 'A book whose importance is almost impossible to overstate. * Sunday Times *Revelatory. There is nothing about humans that is quite as astonishing as language. * Guardian *Impressively modest and reasoned. * Economist *The most important - and provocative - anthropological field work ever undertaken. -- Tom WolfePraise for Don't Sleep, There are Snakes: 'A worldwide bestseller that finds no competition from linguistic researchers. * New Scientist *A remarkable book. It is written with an immediacy even a Piraha might envy, and its conjunction of physical and intellectual adventure is irresistible. * Sunday Times *
