  • Piety and Dissent: Race, Gender, and Biblical

University of Massachusetts Press Piety and Dissent: Race, Gender, and Biblical

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFor pious converts to Christianity in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century New England, all reality was shaped by religious devotion and biblical text. It is therefore not surprising that earnest believers who found themselves marginalized by their race or sex relied on their faith to reconcile the tension between the spiritual experience of rebirth and the social ordeal of exclusion and injustice. In ""Piety and Dissent"", Eileen Razzari Elrod examines the religious autobiographies of six early Americans who represented various sorts of marginality: John Marrant, Olaudah Equiano, and Jarena Lee, all of African or African American heritage; Samson Occom (Mohegan) and William Apess (Pequot); and Abigail Abbott Bailey, a white woman who was subjected to extreme domestic violence. Through close readings of these personal narratives, Elrod uncovers the complex rhetorical strategies employed by pious outsiders to challenge the particular kinds of oppression each experienced. She identifies recurrent ideals and images drawn from Scripture and Protestant tradition - parables of liberation, rage, justice, and opposition to authority - that allowed them to see resistance as a religious act and, more than that, imbued them with a sense of agency. What the life stories of these six individuals reveal, according to Elrod, is that conventional Christianity in early America was not the hegemonic force that church leaders at the time imagined, and that many people since have believed it to be. Nor was there a clear distinction between personal piety and religious, social, and political resistance. To understand fully the role of religion in the early period of American letters, we must rethink some of our most fundamental assumptions about the function of Christian faith in the context of individual lives.Trade ReviewThis book accomplishes much in short compass.... One of Elrod's goals is to return an understanding of religion to the center of scholarship about early American texts, and she does that capably and imaginatively.... Spiritual autobiography remains one of the most 'teachable' genres in early American literature, and Elrod's book will extend how we conceive and follow through on such instruction. - Philip F. Gura, author of Jonathan Edwards: America's Evangelical

  • Writing Systems

    Equinox Publishing Ltd Writing Systems

Book SynopsisThe cultures of the world have chosen different ways to make spoken language visible and permanent. The original edition of Writing Systems represented the first time that modern linguistic principles were brought to bear on a study of this. Now this new edition brings the story up to date; it incorporates topics which have emerged since the first edition (such as electronic techniques for encoding the world's scripts), together with new findings about established topics, including the ultimate historical origin of our alphabet. Featuring a series of detailed case studies of scripts of diverse types, and giving due attention to the psychology of reading and learning to read, the book is written so as to be accessible to those with no prior knowledge of any writing systems other than our own.Trade ReviewPraise for the first edition This is a splendid book ... of outstanding interest to professional linguists and students of linguistics, and also to the large number of lay readers who are fascinated by facts about human language. British Book News A refreshing and rigorous contemporary scientific examination of writing ... Linguists on all fronts should welcome this. Choice An incredible tour de force, covering both Western and East Asian scripts, their historical development and their linguistic features. The treatment of Chinese, Japanese and Korean scripts is particularly fascinating for a Western reader. ASI Newsletter I have found Sampson's book invaluable as a source of descriptive information ... it is written in a straightforward and approachable manner which makes it very engaging as general reading matter ... shows an acquaintance with recent psychological work that is seldom to be found in linguistic writing. • Knowledge-Based Vocabulary Lists

Equinox Publishing Ltd Knowledge-Based Vocabulary Lists

Book SynopsisIn teaching second language (L2) vocabulary, it is useful to have a way of prioritizing words to teach from among the multitude available. Word frequency, i.e. how often various words appear in written and spoken discourse, has typically been used to inform the emphasis taken. This volume explores the need for word lists based on direct tests of learner knowledge to inform L2 pedagogy. The Knowledge-based Vocabulary Lists (KVL) are introduced, and a description of the theoretical and practical basis for their development is given, highlighting pedagogical and assessment situations in which it is beneficial to know whether learners are likely to be able produce and correctly spell the words they know. A focus on L2 learners of English from Chinese, German, and Spanish L1 backgrounds resulted in three ranked lists of English-language word knowledge. The comparative probability of learners from these language backgrounds knowing each word are presented, and the correspondence with existing information about word frequency, word acquisition sequence, and word difficulty is explored. The value of the KVL is discussed in terms of providing one of the few evidence-based descriptions of L2 form-recall vocabulary knowledge available to teachers and researchers.Table of Contents1.The Need for Knowledge-based Vocabulary Lists (KVL) 2. • Micro-Reflection on Classroom Communication: A Fab Framework

Equinox Publishing Ltd Micro-Reflection on Classroom Communication: A Fab Framework

Book SynopsisTraditional concerns with classroom communication have centered on questions such as who talks more, whether the interaction is teacher-centered or student-centered, whether participation is restricted to a few or available to all, what kinds of questions teachers ask (display or referential), and what kinds of feedback they give. These indicators provide a simple and useful way of capturing classroom communication in distributional and categorical terms. Less attention has been devoted to observing and understanding the quality of this communication—whether it facilitates learning regardless of, for example, who talks more. Based on over a decade of fine-grained analysis of video-recorded ESL classroom interaction, this book offers one way of seeing and gauging the quality of classroom communication beyond distributions and categories. In particular, by parsing detailed transcripts of actual classroom interaction, it invites reflective conversations on how three principles of skillful classroom communication may be practiced in the micro-moments of classroom interaction: (1) fostering an inviting classroom environment, (2) attending to student voices, and (3) balancing competing demands (FAB). Attention to the moment-by-moment complexity of the classroom also allows teachers to learn and practice the skill of noticing, the first step in an iterative cycle of noticing, reflecting, and practicing. That is, along with reflecting on what happened in a classroom, teachers must also learn to notice what is happening in the moment. The goal is to cultivate a mentality of micro-reflection—one that sensitizes teachers to the consequentiality of every move they make as they make them in the simultaneity and sequentiality of second-by-second classroom interaction.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: Foster an Inviting Environment Chapter 3: Attend to Student Voices Chapter 4: Balance Competing Demands Chapter 5 The FAB Classroom: Bringing it all Together Chapter 6: Conclusion Appendix A: Transcription Symbols Appendix B: List of Extracts

  • The Birth of the Academic Article: Le Journal des Scavans and the Philosophical Transactions, 1665-1700

Equinox Publishing Ltd The Birth of the Academic Article: Le Journal des Scavans and the Philosophical Transactions, 1665-1700

Book SynopsisThis study is a linguistic analysis of the first two academic periodicals from their creation in 1665 until the end of the seventeenth century. These were Le Journal des Scavans in France and the Philosophical Transactions in England. The analysis is carried out within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The linguistic features and aspects of the theory necessary for understanding the rest of the book are explained, and the historical situation is described in order to place the texts in the context from which they derived. The corpus is made up of a selection of issues for the years 1665, 1675, 1685 and 1694/5, totalling over 66,000 words for Le Journal des Scavans, and over 77,000 words for the Philosophical Transactions. Thematic structure and progression, types of process, expressions of modality, and nominalised processes are studied in each of the periodicals and the results compared. It is shown that differences in the results for the two journals derive from differing editorial decisions, which themselves are engendered by the historical context.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Getting Things Started: By Way of Introduction Chapter 2: Linguistic Background Chapter 3: Historical Background Chapter 4: The Documents to be Used: A Corpus Chapter 5: Thematic Structure: A Starting Point Chapter 6: Transitivity: Actions, Events, States Chapter 7: Modality: Possibility, Ability, Obligation Chapter 8: Nominalization: Reifying Processes Chapter 9: Winding Up and Winding Down: By Way of Conclusion

  • Phonetics for Speech Pathology

Equinox Publishing Ltd Phonetics for Speech Pathology

Book SynopsisThe new, third, edition of this indispensable guide for speech pathology and therapy students is completely updated, applying the results of the most recent research into speech disorders. Phonetics for Speech Pathology introduces normative aspects of phonetics and describes how these may go wrong in atypical speech, and the consequences when they do. The book deals with the three main areas of phonetics: articulatory, acoustic, and auditory, this last being often neglected in phonetics textbooks. The chapters are copiously illustrated, with most diagrams and figures newly drawn for this edition. Correct use of phonetic symbolizations and the importance of adequate transcription in the clinic are stressed, as is the use of instrumental analyses to augment impressionistic descriptions of speech. A range of modern instrumental techniques in speech analysis is covered, as are developments in hearing research including auditory processing disorder. The book concludes with an introduction to current models of speech production and perception.Table of ContentsPreface Introduction Part 1 Articulatory Phonetics Chapter 1 The Vocal Organs Chapter 2 Initiation Chapter 3 Phonation Chapter 4 Manner of Articulation Chapter 5 Place of Articulation Chapter 6 Orality and Nasality Chapter 7 Plosives Chapter 8 Vowels Chapter 9 Primary, secondary, and double articulations Chapter 10 Phonetic Transcription Chapter 11 Parametric Phonetics Chapter 12 Suprasegmentals: Length, stress and pitch Chapter 13 Suprasegmentals: Voice Quality Chapter 14 Speech Imaging Part 2 Acoustic Phonetics Chapter 15 Frequency and Pitch Chapter 16 Intensity and Loudness Chapter 17 Resonance Chapter 18 Recording Speech Chapter 19 Acoustic Analysis: Spectrography Chapter 20 Acoustic Characteristics of Vowels Chapter 21 Acoustic Characteristics of Sonorants Chapter 22 Acoustic Characteristics of Obstruents Chapter 23 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Stress Chapter 24 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Pitch Chapter 25 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Connected speech Chapter 26 Acoustic Characteristics of Suprasegmentals: Voice Quality Chapter 27 Acoustic Characteristics of Child Speech Disorders Chapter 28 Acoustic Characteristics of Acquired Speech Disorders Part 3 Auditory Phonetics Chapter 29 Hearing: The Ear Chapter 30 Hearing: Perception Chapter 31 Hearing: Comprehension Chapter 32 Perceptual Units of Speech Chapter 33 Hearing Impairment Chapter 34 Phonetics of Hearing Impaired Speech Chapter 35 Audiological Measurement Chapter 36 Auditory Processing Disorder Chapter 37 Feedback in Speech Chapter 38 Psychoacoustic Experiments Chapter 39 Delayed Auditory Feedback Chapter 40 Dichotic Listening Chapter 41 Time-Variated Speech Chapter 42 Models of Speech Production and Perception Appendices: Phonetic Symbols and Notes on Transcription Appendix I The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Appendix II The Extensions to the IPA for Disordered Speech (extIPA) Appendix III VoQS symbols for Voice Quality
