Springer Verlag, Singapore Language Teachers at Work: Linking Materials with Classroom Teaching
Book SynopsisThis book examines a ubiquitous, yet under-researched, area of language education, i.e., language teachers' use of curriculum materials. It particularly focuses on EFL teachers' use of prescribed curriculum materials in higher education in Mainland China and presents a qualitative, multi-case study involving four Chinese EFL teachersand eight students (two students from each teacher’s class) at one university in Mainland China. Drawing on data from pre-lesson and post-lesson interviews with the teachers, lesson observations, and documents in three consecutive semesters at the target university, the book delineates the processes of materials useinclassroom settings. It also identifies four domains of factors that influenced the enactment of curriculum materials. Most importantly, by adopting Vygotsky’s (1978) mediation theory and Remillard’s (2005) participatory perspective, the book constructs a "curriculum enactment mediation model" to reveal the complex and mediated relations among teachers, learners, curriculum materials, and context. It also recommends practical implications for materials developers, teacher educators, administrators, and policymakers.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction1.1 A global view on the role of textbooks in ELT1.2 Materials use as a research gap in English language education1.3 Aims of the study1.4 Research problems1.5 Structure of the bookChapter 2 Teachers’ use of materials: A sociocultural perspective2.1 Defining key concepts in the study2.1.1 Curriculum materials vs materials2.1.2 Materials use vs materials development2.2 The context of the study2.2.1 The evolution of college English (CE) curriculum in China2.2.2 Five generations of CE textbooks2.3 Research on materials use in ELT2.3.1 Teachers’ ways of using materials in ELT2.3.2 The influencing factors in teachers’ use of materials in ELT2.4 Research on materials use in mainstream education2.4.1 Teachers’ ways of using materials in mainstream education2.4.2 The educative role of curriculum materials in mainstream education2.4.3 The influencing factors in teachers’ curriculum enactment2.5 The theoretical framework of the study2.5.1 Theoretical underpinnings of teacher-curriculum studies 2.5.2 Theoretical underpinnings of this study2.6 SummaryChapter 3 The design of the study3.1 Qualitative multi-case study3.2 Selection of setting, participants and materials3.2.1 The target university3.2.2 Teacher and student participants3.2.3 Target textbook3.3 Data collection3.4 Data analysis3.5 Trustworthiness3.6 SummaryChapter 4 Teachers’ use of curriculum materials4.1 Teachers' use of curriculum materials in the pre-lesson phase4.1.1 Reading4.1.2 Evaluating4.1.3 Appropriating and adapting4.2 Teachers’ use of curriculum materials in the while-lesson phase4.2.1 Transforming4.2.2 Assessing4.2.3 Adapting4.2.4 Improvising4.3 Teachers’ use of curriculum materials in the post-lesson phase4.3.1 Reflecting4.3.2 Reconceiving4.5 SummaryChapter 5 Discussion5.1 The influences on teachers’ enactment of curriculum materials5.1.1 Teachers’ affordances and constraints5.1.2 Students’ affordances and constraints5.1.3 Curriculum affordances and constraints5.1.4 Contextual affordances and constraints5.2 Conceptualizing teachers’ enactment of curriculum materials 5.2.1 Mediations of teachers' use of curriculum materials in the pre-lesson phase 5.2.2 Mediations of teachers’ use of curriculum materials in while-lesson phase5.2.3 Mediations of teachers’ use of curriculum materials in post-lesson phase5.2.4 Mediated relations among teachers, learners, curriculum materials and context5.3 Curriculum enactment mediation model5.4 SummaryChapter 6 Conclusions and implications6.1 Significance of this research6.2 What are the good practices of enacting curriculum materials?6.3 Language teachers' knowledge of materials use6.4 Implications for professional development6.5 Implications for materials development6.6 Implications for teacher education6.7 Limitations and future researchReferencesAppendices

Springer Verlag, Singapore Where Centering Meets Chinese Discourse
Book SynopsisThis book addresses the question: What can close discourse analysis contribute to the understanding of language? To do so, it presents a centering theory-based computational approach to discourse analysis concerning Chinese bei passive sentences, disposal ba constructions, ditransitive gei sentences, and locative fang sentences. The book first discusses the use of discourse analysis in the context of bei and ba constructions and then demonstrates how discourse analysis can contribute to the syntactic and semantic studies of these sentences. It also examines the various thematic roles differentiated in these four special sentence patterns, namely agent, recipient, theme/patient, and locative, and reveals the various degrees of discourse accessibility of these thematic roles. Exploring the correlation between centering theory and Chinese discourse, the book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in discourse analysis and Chinese special sentential structures, especially the formal approaches to these issues.Table of ContentsList of tablesAbbreviationsChapter 1. Springer Verlag, Singapore Tono-types and Tone Evolution: The Case of Chaoshan
Book SynopsisThis book is a comprehensive study on the phonetic characteristics of citation tones in Chaoshan Chinese. It presents the tonal patterns of 65 localities in the Chaoshan area under the “multiple-register and four-level” tonal model. Three case studies are conducted to delve into the evolutionary paths of Chaoshan tones. This book not only provides a large-scale typological study on Chaoshan Chinese, but also offers a good example of how to figure out the evolutionary paths of tones from the perspective of variation. The natural alliance of phonetics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and dialect geography is reinforced. It is also suggested in this book that the joint use of these four disciplines is very promising for the study of Chinese.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements List of figures List of tables Abstract Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 General introduction to Chaoshan Chinese 1.2 Theoretical background 1.2.1 “Multi-register and four-level” tonal model 1.2.2 Universal tonal inventories 1.2.3 Tono-type and tonal pattern 1.3 Methodology 1.3.1 Fieldwork corpus 1.3.2 Information of informants 1.3.3 Data collection and analysis 1.4 Research Goals 1.5 Statement of significance 1.6 Outline of the book Chapter 2 Literature review 2.1 Previous studies on Chaoshan Chinese 2.1.1 Descriptive reports 2.1.2 Comparative studies 2.1.3 Acoustic phonetics2.2 The development of tonal models devised to delineate tones 2.3 Tonal typology and tone evolution 2.3.1 The mechanism of sound change 2.3.2 Tonal typology 2.3.3 Tone evolution 2.4 Summary Chapter 3 Tonal patterns within the Chaoshan area 3.1 Pattern A: Falling-level-level-level-low-rising 3.2 Pattern B: Falling-falling-level-level-low-rising 3.3 Pattern C: Falling-level-level-low-rising-rising 3.4 Pattern D: Falling-falling-level-low-rising-rising 3.5 Pattern E: Falling-falling-level-low-rising 3.6 Pattern F: Falling-level-level-low-rising 3.7 Pattern G: Falling-falling-level-level-low-high 3.8 Pattern H: Falling-falling-level-level-level-low 3.9 Pattern I: Falling-falling-falling-level-low 3.10 Pattern J: Falling-falling-level-level-low 3.11 Pattern K: Falling-falling-level-level-rising3.12 Three other patterns 3.13 Three main types: the dialectical classification of Chaoshan Chinese 3.14 The tono-types of MC tones within the Chaoshan area Chapter 4 The tonal chain shifts in the Huipu area 4.1 General introduction to the Huipu area 4.2 The special phonation in T2a 4.3 The downward chain shift of falling tones 4.4 The upward chain shift of rising tones 4.5 V-shaped tonal shift 4.5.1 From Jinghai to Liusha 4.5.2 The significant role of the pure low tone 4.5.3 More chian shift evolutions of tone in Chinese dialects 4.6 Non-natural merger of tones due to language contact 4.7 The downward chain shift of level tones4.8 The further development of T2a in central Huilai County 4.9 Summary Chapter 5 Tonal changes in the Chaoyang area 5.1 General introduction to the Chaoyang area 5.2 Changes in the production of T2a in the Chaoyang area 5.2.1 Age-related differences parallel with geographic variations 5.2.2 A perceptual experiment on T2a of Lugang dialect 5.2.3 Listener as an initiator in tonal changes 5.3 The chain shift of tones in Miancheng dialect 5.3.1 Tones involved in the chain shift 5.3.2 A pull chain or a push chain? 5.4 Tonal changes in Haimen dialect 5.5 Tonal changes in Dahao dialect 5.6 Tonal changes in Guiyu dialect 5.7 The motive behind the tonal changes in the Chaoyang area 5.8 SummaryChapter 6 The evolution of checked tones 6.1 General introduction 6.2 Different stages in the development of checked tones 6.3 Different phonation types of checked tones 6.3.1 Two basic forms of checked tone syllables in Chaoshan dialect 6.3.2 What is the so-called glottal stop? 6.3.3 Different phonetic manifestations of T4a and T4b 6.4 Experimental measures of acoustic cues for phonations in T4a and T4b 6.4.1 Acoustic measures 6.4.2 Stimuli 6.4.3 Informant 6.4.4 Result 6.4.5 Conclusion 6.5 The significance of the Yun’ao case 6.6 Summary Chapter 7 Conclusion 7.1 Summary of the major findings 7.1.1 Phonetic data exploration 7.1.2 Theoretical explorations 7.2 Future research and improvement References: Appendix A: Wordlists for analysis of tonal system Appendix B: Dialect sites and number of informants Appendix C: Informants from the Shanjie type Appendix D: Informants from the Huipu type Appendix E: Informants from the Chaoyang type Appendix F: Informants from other types Appendix G: Tono-types of each tonal pattern

Springer Verlag, Singapore The Segmentation and Representation of Translocative Motion Events in English and Chinese Discourse: A Contrastive Study
Book SynopsisThis book provides a systematic, contrastive analysis of the segmentation and representation of English and Chinese Translocative Motion Events (TMEs), which possess Macro-Event Property (MEP). It addresses all the issues critical to understanding TMEs in English and Chinese, from event segmentation, MEP principles and the conceptual structure of TMEs and their constituents, to the representation of Actant, Motion, Path and Ground. The book argues that the corpus-based alignment for the TME segmentation in both languages, the parameters of Actant, Motion, Path and Ground and their relevant statistical description are particularly important for understanding English and Chinese TMEs. The linguistic materialization of Actant, Ground, Path and Motion, together with a wealth of tables and figures, offers convincing evidence to support the typological classification of English and Chinese. The book’s suggestions regarding the Talmyan bipartite typology and Bohnemeyer’s MEP contribute to the advancement of TME studies and language typology, and help learners to understand motion events and English-Chinese typological similarities and differences.Table of ContentsList of TablesList of FiguresList of AbbreviationsChapter 1 Introduction: Events, Motion Events and Translocative Motion Events1.1 Translocative Motion Events (TMEs) 1.1.1 Defining event1.1.2 TME 1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study 1.2.1 Purpose of the study 1.2.2 Significance of the study 1.3 Framework and Methodological Issues1.4 The RoadmapChapter 2 MEP Principles and the Segmentation and Representation of the TMES 2.0 Introduction 2.1 Theoretical Issues 2.1.1 Talmyan dichotomy typology and motion event studies by other scholars 2.1.1.1 Talmyan dichotomy typology 2.1.1.2 Dichotomy or trichotomy 2.1.2 Event segmentation 2.2 Principles of MEP 2.2.1 The biuniqueness constraint 2.2.2 The macro-event linking principle 2.2.3 The referential uniqueness constraint 2.2.4 The unique vector constraint 2.2.5 The loss of MEP 2.2.6 A brief summary of Section 2.2 2.3 The Segmentation of Complex Motion Events and the TME Constructions with MEP2.3.1 The conceptual structure and types of motion events 2.3.2 The segmentation of complex motion events 2.3.3 The TME constructions with MEP 2.4 The Components of TMEs and Parameter-setting 2.4.1 Figure and parameter-setting 2.4.2 Motion and parameter- setting 2.4.3 Path and parameter-setting 2.4.4 Ground and parameter-setting 2.5 Tertium Comparationis and the Hypothesis for This Study2.6 Summary Chapter 3 Corpus Tagging and Statistical Work3.0 Introduction 3.1 Research Design 3.1.1 The parallel translation corpus 3.1.2 Sentence selection and tagging 3.1.3 Variables 3.2 English and Chinese TME Constructions3.2.1 The MEP sentences in English and Chinese texts 3.2.2 The subevent constructions in English and Chinese texts 3.3 Representing English and Chinese TME Constructions3.3.1 Who is moving 3.3.2 How to move 3.3.3 Which road to follow 3.3.4 Where to go 3.4 Summary Chapter 4 Contrasting the Representation of English and Chinese TMEs4.0 Introduction 4.1 The Representation of English and Chinese TMEs 4.1.1 English TMEs in the original texts 4.1.2 English TMEs in the translated texts 4.2.1 Chinese TMEs in the original texts 4.2.2 Chinese TMEs in the translated texts 4.2.3 At hand or in the distance? Oxford University Press Dogwhistles and Figleaves
Book SynopsisPinpoints how dogwhistles and figleaves, two kinds of linguistic trick, distort political discourse and normalize racismIt is widely accepted that political discourse in recent years has become more openly racist and more accepting of wildly implausible conspiracy theories. Dogwhistles and Figleaves explores ways in which such changes--both of which defied previously settled norms of political speech--have been brought about. Jennifer Saul shows that two linguistic devices, dogwhistles and figleaves, have played a crucial role. Some dogwhistles (such as 88, used by Nazis online to mean Heil Hitler) serve to disguise messages that would otherwise be rejected as unacceptable, allowing them to be transmitted surreptitiously. Other dogwhistles (like the 1988 Willie Horton ad) work by influencing people in ways that they are not aware of, and which they would likely reject were they aware. Figleaves (such as just asking questions) take messages that could easily be recognized as unacceptablTrade ReviewIt's a scrupulous look at a damaging linguistic phenomenon that often hides in plain sight. * Publishers Weekly *What is interesting about Saul's study is the instability of meaning it reveals, the layers of deception employed not only by speakers, but by listeners, who are occasionally deluding themselves ... clear, engaging and very readable. * Roisin Kiberd, Irish Independent *There is no doubt that our current political climate is posing a threat to democracy. It is not only that we are polarized, but polarization is fueled by an onslaught of (often thinly veiled) manipulative speech and falsehoods. Media consumers absorb distorting messages without even being aware of it, and speakers are not held responsible. Dogwhistles and Figleaves provides an essential tool for seeing how our ability to communicate and to coordinate is being undermined. This theoretically rich and highly readable book is essential for those who value democracy, and the kind of public discourse that makes it possible. * Sally Haslanger, Ford Professor of Philosophy and Women's and Genders Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology *Table of ContentsIntroduction Part 1: Racism 1: White Racism, White Folk Racial Theory, and White Racial Discourse 2: Racist Dogwhistles 3: Figleaves for Racism Part 2: Falsehood 4: The Rise of Blatant Falsehood and Wild Conspiracism 5: Figleaves, Dogwhistles, and Falsehood 6: Obvious Falsehoods Without Deniability 7: Dogwhistles, Figleaves, and the Fight Against Racism and Blatant Falsehood

Cambridge University Press A Philosopher Looks at Digital Communication
Book SynopsisCommunication is complicated, and so is the ethics of communication. We communicate about innumerable topics, to varied audiences, using a gamut of technologies. The ethics of communication, therefore, has to address a wide range of technical, ethical and epistemic requirements. In this book, Onora O''Neill shows how digital technologies have made communication more demanding: they can support communication with huge numbers of distant and dispersed recipients; they can amplify or suppress selected content; and they can target or ignore selected audiences. Often this is done anonymously, making it harder for readers and listeners, viewers and browsers, to assess which claims are true or false, reliable or misleading, flaky or fake. So how can we empower users to assess and evaluate digital communication, so that they can tell which standards it meets and which it flouts? That is the challenge which this book explores.Trade Review'This book tackles one of the most crucial ethical issues facing us in the age of online communication and digital information. SAGE Publications Inc Content Analysis: An Introduction to Its
Book SynopsisWhat matters in people’s social lives? What motivates and inspires our society? How do we enact what we know? Since the first edition published in 1980, Content Analysis has helped shape and define the field. In the highly anticipated Fourth Edition, award-winning scholar and author Klaus Krippendorff introduces readers to the most current method of analyzing the textual fabric of contemporary society. Students and scholars will learn to treat data not as physical events but as communications that are created and disseminated to be seen, read, interpreted, enacted, and reflected upon according to the meanings they have for their recipients. Interpreting communications as texts in the contexts of their social uses distinguishes content analysis from other empirical methods of inquiry. Organized into three parts, Content Analysis first examines the conceptual aspects of content analysis, then discusses components such as unitizing and sampling, and concludes by showing readers how to trace the analytical paths and apply evaluative techniques. The Fourth Edition has been completely revised to offer readers the most current techniques and research on content analysis, including new information on reliability and social media. Readers will also gain practical advice and experience for teaching academic and commercial researchers how to conduct content analysis. Harvard University Press Leadership Without Easy Answers
Book SynopsisDrawing on a dozen years of research among managers, officers, and politicians in the public realm and the private sector, among the nonprofits, and in teaching, Heifetz presents clear, concrete prescriptions for anyone who needs to take the lead in almost any situation, under almost any organizational conditions, no matter who is in charge.Trade ReviewLeadership Without Easy Answers is a masterwork of great subtlety, and of punch and practicality. Leadership is not value-free, Mr. Heifetz writes… [The author puts] soul and values squarely back into a vital topic, leadership. -- Tom Peters * New York Times Book Review *Ronald Heifetz brings knowledge of an astonishingly wide range of disciplines to this study of leadership… As a musician, a cellist, he understands that the quality of a performance depends on the audience as well as on the instrumentalist… As a psychiatrist, Heifetz understands that communities cannot be pushed beyond their capacity to adapt… These insights give to Heifetz’s book an originality and vivacity one rarely associates with studies on leadership. He illustrates his theses with an extraordinary range of cases and examples… Leadership Without Easy Answers reminds us of democracy’s rich potential. It is a bold book and an encouraging one. I hope some of our leaders are out there learning. -- Shirley Williams * Times Higher Education Supplement *Ronald Heifetz has written an interesting and timely book, in which he moves away from the idea of leaders as visionaries and saviors to stressing leadership as an activity as opposed to a position of authority or a set of personal characteristics. -- Robert Hooijberg * Journal of Leadership Studies *This pioneering study constitutes one of the most insightful and innovative approaches to leadership studies in over a decade… Heifetz masterfully presents his new leadership model by intertwining general theory and prescriptive practical guidance through fertile historical and workplace case studies. Heifetz’s goal is nothing less than a summoning for a new social contract that seeks to revitalize America’s civic ethos by adopting leadership strategies to empower the citizenry rather than to merely enhance the authority of the leader… The upshot of this study should place it in the front line in leadership historiography for years to come. -- R. J. Lettieri * Choice *Heifetz presents a new theory of leadership for both public and private leaders in tackling complex contemporary problems. Central to his theory is the distinction between routine technical problems, which can be solved through expertise, and adaptive problems, such as crime, poverty, and educational reform, which require innovative approaches, including consideration of values. Four major strategies of leadership are identified: to approach problems as adaptive challenges by diagnosing the situation in light of the values involved and avoiding authoritative solutions, to regulate the level of stress caused by confronting issues, and to shift responsibility for problems from the leader to all the primary stakeholders. The theory is applied to an analysis of historical accounts of local, national, and international events. An innovative and thoroughgoing work; highly recommended. * Library Journal *A superb book for any age, but particularly for our current one, where society is so desperately in need of its wisdom and expertise. Leadership Without Easy Answers should be required reading for top managers in all sectors—private, public, and nonprofit. I hope it will also be widely read by the citizenry that is so much in need of an attitude shift on the nature of authority. This book is also very much about citizenship. -- M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less TraveledAlive with insights, concepts, new ideas, just teeming with the kind of creative approach to the study of leadership that I and of course many others esteem. In a field in which there has been a great deal of repetitious work, Heifetz strikes out in ground-breaking directions. -- James MacGregor Burns, author of LeadershipRemarkably thoughtful, provocative, and useful. This book will be seen as a major contribution that provides a rare interdisciplinary view of leadership in context. Leaders as well as serious students of the process of leadership and the development of leaders need to have this book on their shelves. -- General Walter Ulmer, U.S. Army (Ret.), President and CEO, Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro, North CarolinaHeifetz turns out to be one of the most thoughtful scholars on leadership. His direct and relevant concepts are pathbreaking. -- James David Barber, author of Presidential CharacterOriginal and penetrating in its analysis of leadership. This is an excellent book. Important and valuable. -- John Gardner, former Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare and founder of Common CauseLeadership Without Easy Answers should go a long way toward clearing up many confusions about leadership. Long a master teacher of leaders, Heifetz’s courses and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government have been standing-room only for years. Read this book and see why. -- Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning OrganizationTable of Contents* Foreword by Richard L. Neustadt * Introduction Part I. Princeton University Press Primates of the World
Book SynopsisA guide to the world's primates covers nearly 300 species, from the feather-light and solitary pygmy mouse lemurs of Madagascar - among the smallest primates known to exist - to regal mountain gorillas of Africa. This book features 72 splendid color plates, facing-page descriptions of key features of each family, and 86 color distribution maps.Trade Review"I can think of no better introduction to the non-human primates than Jean-Jacques Petter's and Francois Desbordes' Primates of the World... The text is authoritative and readable and includes very good sections on the evolution of primates and the roles of environment and competition in influencing primate adaptations. There are also excellent chapters on territorial behavior, social organization, and sociality. The book is richly and beautifully illustrated by Francois Desbordes, and there are excellent life histories for each primate species. Primates of the World belongs on the shelf of anyone who wants to expand his or her understanding of human origins and of anyone who is captivated by the rich personal experiences, long-term detailed field observations, and passionate conservation messages of Diane Fossey and Jane Goodall."--Wayne Mones, Perch/Audubon Magazine's Blog "This volume holds a treasure... Primates indeed contains 72 illustrated plates describing, by continent, the major primate species inhabiting our planet... [E]ach drawing, precise and magnificent, unveils their morphology, their colors, their postures... [A] splendid and fascinating book."--Rafaele Brillaud, Science & Vie "Those who love beautiful nature plates--in the tradition of Audubon and his birds--will be delighted by this landmark book... [D]azzling illustrated plates."--Rachel Mulot, Sciences et Avenir "A masterpiece. Francois Desbordes's 72 watercolor plates are pure marvels, in the great tradition of scientific pictures of the 19th century."--Marc Giraud, L'Oiseau Magazine "Primates of the World by Jean-Jacques Petter & Francois Desbordes is a beautifully illustrated guide that is perfect for those who are interested in primates and a great reference guide to use for primate classes."--Raymond Ho, Prancing Papio "'The' reference everyone interested in primates should have by their bedside."--Sylvie Nandelec, Scoop on Primates "This text offers readers brief yet substantial information on almost 300 species of primates... Introductory material provides significant information that is relevant across the primate species, including material on the origins of various primates, predators, social habits, classifications, and more... Appropriate for students or general readers interested in enhancing their knowledge of primates."--Booklist "Beautiful... Readers will be fascinated by what Petter describes as the 'dazzling diversity of primates,' and they'll be dazzled by the stunning illustrations. Highly recommended."--Cynthia Lee Knight, Library Journal "[B]eautifully produced... [I]t is the array of stunningly detailed watercolour illustrations by Francois Desbordes that makes the volume truly outstanding... [A] joy to hold and leaf through, and will appeal to bibliophiles as well as primatophiles."--Ian Redmond, BBC Wildlife "I wish I had this book available to me when I took a graduate course on primatology in the 1970s at the University of Richmond."--RK, Wildlife Activist "This book is a combination of values. The first part is a readable text that can be enjoyed at leisure. The last half is a reference volume for the species most travellers are likely to encounter. The whole book gives a fascinating insight into this intriguing and intelligent group of mammals. It is good value for the price."--Emard Crescent, Canadian Field Naturalist "This is not a volume one would reference for details of primate systematics or biogeography, but as a beautiful introduction to the diversity of color and form seen among living primates, it is a stunning success."--John G. Fleagle, Quarterly Review of Biology "The design of the book is excellent, with color-coding employed nicely in the finely detailed range maps and in the classification section, and with the plates featuring high-quality reproductions on heavy paper. The plates are the real heart of the book and Francois Desbordes's wonderful watercolors will excite anybody interested in wildlife art."--Discovery "[I]t would act as a good foundation for anyone hoping to study primates. It is also written lightly enough that it will not bamboozle the casual user. Therefore, it should find a home in libraries whose patrons are zoologists (primarily for the plates and population maps), but also in a public library for those members of the public wishing to expand their horizons."--Stuart Bentley, Reference Reviews "Desbordes's illustrations are phenomenal... It should be considered the most accessible guide to the world's primates... Damrosch writes with great clarity and care, vividly bringing individual figures and their ideas to life. . . . [He] not only displays the breadth of his own personal canon, but also argues compellingly for the idea that our understanding of a given text is always enhanced by comparing it with other texts, whether or not the pairings are conventional or expected."---Alexander Beecroft, Modern Philology

Nine Arches Press The Craft - A Guide to Making Poetry Happen in
Book SynopsisThe Craft is an indispensable guide to both the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of poetic craft in the 21st century, and essential writing-desk companion for poets at all stages. The book covers practical techniques – the nuts of bolts of putting poems together, mastering poetic forms such as sonnets, sestinas, prose poems and golden shovels, how to choose titles for your poems and the art of long sequences. It also explores the idea of ‘craft’ itself - knowing how pentameters dance is important, but by no way is it the only dimension of ‘craft’ that the poet starting out today has to consider. What about sound and the skills involved in performing your work? What about truth and fabrication, and the ethics of using real life in your work? What about the politics of the word ‘craft’ itself? With essays on poetry from Moniza Alvi, Dean Atta, Liz Berry, Caroline Bird, Malika Booker, Debjani Chatterjee, Jane Commane, Rishi Dastidar, Carrie Etter, Will Harris, Tania Hershman, Peter Kahn, Gregory Leadbetter, Karen McCarthy Woolf, Roy McFarlane, Harry Man, Claire Pollard, Peter Raynard, Roger Robinson, Jacqueline Saphra, Joelle Taylor, Marvin Thompson, Julia Webb, and Antosh Wojcik.

Little, Brown Book Group The Work Smarter Guide to Presenting
Book SynopsisFact: most people would rather die than present in public. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 75% of people rank fear of speaking in public as their number-one fear. In second place: death. For many people, presenting arouses fear of failure, of forgetting their content, of appearing nervous, of being ignored or judged by their audience, of encountering the unexpected, of technology, of going on too long or drying up. And too many presentations are lifeless, pointless and go on far too long. Yet the ability to stand up and give a presentation, a speech, a lesson or a toast in a way that captures your audience''s attention and actually makes them think, feel or do something as a result is one of the most effective ways to stand out at work and in life. This book is a shortcut to making you shine on stage when you are under the spotlight or presenting on screen. It is a supremely practical guide to giving presentations th
