  • Cryptography Made Simple

Springer International Publishing AG Cryptography Made Simple

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this introductory textbook the author explains the key topics in cryptography. He takes a modern approach, where defining what is meant by "secure" is as important as creating something that achieves that goal, and security definitions are central to the discussion throughout. The author balances a largely non-rigorous style — many proofs are sketched only — with appropriate formality and depth. For example, he uses the terminology of groups and finite fields so that the reader can understand both the latest academic research and "real-world" documents such as application programming interface descriptions and cryptographic standards. The text employs colour to distinguish between public and private information, and all chapters include summaries and suggestions for further reading. This is a suitable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, mathematics and engineering, and for self-study by professionals in information security. While the appendix summarizes most of the basic algebra and notation required, it is assumed that the reader has a basic knowledge of discrete mathematics, probability, and elementary calculus.Trade Review“The goal of cryptography is to obfuscate data for unintended recipients. … The book is divided into four parts. … The book is very comprehensive, and very accessible for dedicated students.” (Klaus Galensa, Computing Reviews, computingreviews.com, October, 2016)“Cryptography made simple is a textbook that provides a broad coverage of topics that form an essential working knowledge for the contemporary cryptographer. It is particularly suited to introducing graduate and advanced undergraduate students in computer science to the concepts necessary for understanding academic cryptography and its impact on real-world practice, though it will also be useful for mathematicians or engineers wishing to gain a similar perspective on this material.” (Maura Beth Paterson, Mathematical Reviews, July, 2016)“This is a very thorough introduction to cryptography, aimed at lower-division undergraduates. It is an engineering textbook that uses modern mathematical terminology (such as groups and finite fields). … Bottom line: really for engineers, and a useful book if used carefully; the organization makes is easy to get overwhelmed by the background material before you get to the 'good stuff', and even the good stuff has an overwhelming amount of detail.” (Allen Stenger, MAA Reviews, maa.org, June, 2016)“This very thorough book by Smart (Univ. of Bristol, UK) is aimed at graduate students and advanced undergraduates in mathematics and computer science and intended to serve as a bridge to research papers in the field. … Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals/practitioners.” (C. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book takes a fresh approach to analysing how new languages are created, combining in-depth colonial history and empirical, usage-based linguistics. Focusing on a rarely studied language, the authors employ this dual methodology to reconstruct how multilingual individuals drew on their perception of Romance and West African languages to form French Guianese Creole. In doing so, they facilitate the application of a usage-based approach to language while simultaneously contributing significantly to the debate on creole origins. This innovative volume is sure to appeal to students and scholars of language history, creolisation and languages in contact.Chapter 3 is published open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.Trade Review“The book is well written, the argumentation is usually clear, the authors have a clear theorical framework, they present a great deal of linguistic data … . This book is probably its best test to date. … In short, this is an interesting book, more historically informed than most works of its kind.” (Peter Bakker, Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages, Vol. 36 (2), 2021)Table of ContentsChapter 1. • Springer International Publishing AG Wordsearches: Widen Your Vocabulary in English

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOn the train, on the beach, on the sofa ... many people in all parts of the world enjoy doing wordsearches. If you are studying English and want to learn and practise vocabulary related to various topics, then this book is for you! The topics reflect the kinds of everyday conversations that you might have both with native and non-native speakers of English. The topics are also those that are typically tested in English examinations e.g.TOEFL, Cambridge (First Certificate, Advanced), IELTS, and Trinity. Each chapter begins with a list of questions to enable you to have a conversation about a particular topic in various situations: on a social occasion (e.g. a work dinner, a conference lunch, a party); in the classroom during an English lesson; when chatting, either face to face or online; and during an English oral exam. After the list of questions, you will find a Word List associated with the topic and exercises to test your knowledge of less common words. The final aim is then to find the words from the Word List in the related Wordsearch. Easy English! is a series of books to help you learn and revise your English with minimal effort. You can improve your English by: reading texts in English that you might normally read in your own language e.g. jokes, personality tests, lateral thinking games, and wordsearches; doing short exercises to improve specific areas grammar and vocabulary, i.e. the areas that tend to lead to the most mistakes - the aim is just to focus on what you really need rather than overwhelming yourself with a mass of rules, many of which may have no practical daily value. Other books in the Easy English!series include: Wordsearches: Widen Your Vocabulary in English Test Your Personality: Have Fun and Learn Useful Phrases Word games, Riddles and Logic Tests: Tax Your Brain and Boost Your English Top 50 Grammar Mistakes: How to Avoid Them Top 50 Vocabulary Mistakes: How to Avoid ThemTable of ContentsBody, Appearance, Health.- Business and Finance.- Education and Work.- Family, House and Home.- Cooking and Food.- Free Time.- Technology.- Language.- Places, Travel and Transport.- Crime, Politics and Religion.- Time and Environment.

  • You Must Be Very Intelligent: The PhD Delusion

Springer International Publishing AG You Must Be Very Intelligent: The PhD Delusion

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisYou Must be Very Intelligent is the author’s account of studying for a PhD in a modern, successful university. Part-memoir and part-exposé, this book is highly entertaining and unusually revealing about the dubious morality and desperate behaviour which underpins competition in twenty-first century academia. This witty, warts-and-all account of Bodewits´ years as a PhD student in the august University of Edinburgh is full of success and failure, passion and pathos, insight, farce and warm-hearted disillusionment. She describes a world of collaboration and backstabbing; nefarious financing and wasted genius; cosmopolitan dreamers and discoveries that might just change the world… Is this a smart people’s world or a drip can of weird species? Modern academia is certainly darker and stranger than one might suspect… This book will put a wry, knowing smile on the faces of former researchers. And it is a cautionary parable for innocents who still believe that lofty academia is erected upon moral high ground…Trade Review“A new novel about academic life is not a ringing endorsement, to say the least. But it will make you laugh. And that’s the point.” (Colleen Flaherty, Inside Higher Ed, February, 2018)“The story is immersive, and I felt like I was there with our hero every step of the way.” (Chemistry World, chemistryworld.com, January 2018)“Karin Bodewits’ partly autobiographic book ‘You must be very intelligent – The PhD Delusion’ is a revealing, tongue in cheek tale about PhD life.” (Ulrike Träger, Metior Magazine, November, 2017)“PhD novel is ‘wake-up call’ on supervisor-student ‘power plays’” (Times Higher Education, November, 2017)Table of ContentsDedication.- Foreword.- Prologue.- Part I: Before.- Part II: Year 1.- Part III: Year 2.- Epilogue.

  • The Making of Catalan Linguistic Identity in

Springer International Publishing AG The Making of Catalan Linguistic Identity in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe historical relationship between the Catalan and Occitan languages had a definitive impact on the linguistic identity of the powerful Crown of Aragon and the emergent Spanish Empire. Drawing upon a wealth of historical documents, linguistic treatises and literary texts, this book offers fresh insights into the political and cultural forces that shaped national identities in the Iberian Peninsula and, consequently, neighboring areas of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. The innovative textual approach taken in these pages exposes the multifaceted ways in which the boundaries between the region’s most prestigious languages were contested, and demonstrates how linguistic identities were linked to ongoing struggles for political power. As the analysis reveals, the ideological construction of Occitan would play a crucial role in the construction of a unified Catalan, and Catalan would, in turn, give rise to a fervent debate around ‘Spanish’ language that has endured through the present day. This book will appeal to students and scholars of historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, Hispanic linguistics, Catalan language and linguistics, anthropological linguistics, Early Modern literature and culture, and the history of the Mediterranean.Trade Review“I find Lledó-Guillem‘s monograph to be brilliant, innovative, and groundbreaking. … this book is a must-have to both students and scholars in Medieval and Early Modern political, cultural, and intellectual history, European studies, Romance languages, historical sociolinguistics, and linguistic anthropology. It is a work that will be referenced and cited for years to come.” (Josef Fioretta, Scripta, Issue 11, June, 2018)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction.Part I: The political use of the Occitan language by the Catalan-Aragonese monarchy; Chapter 2: The Rise of Catalan as a Royal Language: Bernat Desclot’s account of the Battle of Castellammare in response to Bernat d’Auriac’s sirventés;Chapter 3: The politics of the linguistic discontinuity of Occitan versus the continuity of Catalan: the Sermó by Ramon Muntaner.Chapter 4: Catalan and Occitan versus Aragonese: the poetic ceremony following the Coronation of Alfonso the Benign in Muntaner’s Crònica.Part II: The interpretation of the Catalan-Occitan relationship in the construction of the Spanish Empire.- Chapter 5: The historical (dis)continuity of the Catalan language and the linguistic creation of the Spanish Empire: Ausiàs March in the Early Modern Period.Chapter 6: A unitary Catalan-Occitan language in the Early Modern Period: the exaltation of Apitxat Valencian.Chapter 7: Conclusion.

  • Narration as Argument

Springer International Publishing AG Narration as Argument

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents reflections on the relationship between narratives and argumentative discourse. It focuses on their functional and structural similarities or dissimilarities, and offers diverse perspectives and conceptual tools for analyzing the narratives’ potential power for justification, explanation and persuasion. Divided into two sections, the first Part, under the title “Narratives as Sources of Knowledge and Argument”, includes five chapters addressing rather general, theoretical and characteristically philosophical issues related to the argumentative analysis and understanding of narratives. We may perceive here how scholars in Argumentation Theory have recently approached certain topics that have a close connection with mainstream discussions in epistemology and the cognitive sciences about the justificatory potential of narratives. The second Part, entitled “Argumentative Narratives in Context”, brings us six more chapters that concentrate on either particular functions played by argumentatively-oriented narratives or particular practices that may benefit from the use of special kinds of narratives. Here the focus is either on the detailed analysis of contextualized examples of narratives with argumentative qualities or on the careful understanding of the particular demands of certain well-defined situated activities, as diverse as scientific theorizing or war policing, that may be satisfied by certain uses of narrative discourse.Trade Review“Narration as Argument is an excellent and informative book that can spur trans-disciplinary conversations with scholars in Black studies, Marxist and feminist theories, literary studies, and media studies, just to name a few.” (Charles Athanasopoulos, Argumentation and Advocacy, Vol. 56 (3), 2020)“It seems clear that Paula Olmos has succeeded in her aim of exhibiting the wide range of approaches to the relation between narration and argument, given the variety of approaches to narration as argument exhibited in these twelve chapters. … She has reserved a table for everyone and bade them sit down side by side, in the hope that they will all begin to talk to one another. It’s a start.” (J. Anthony Blair, Argumentation, Vol. 33, 2019)Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book Synopsis This new collection of essays follows in the footsteps of the successful volume Thinking Ahead - Essays on Big Data, Digital Revolution, and Participatory Market Society, published at a time when our societies were on a path to technological totalitarianism, as exemplified by mass surveillance reported by Edward Snowden and others. Meanwhile the threats have diversified and tech companies have gathered enough data to create detailed profiles about almost everyone living in the modern world - profiles that can predict our behavior better than our friends, families, or even partners. This is not only used to manipulate peoples’ opinions and voting behaviors, but more generally to influence consumer behavior at all levels. It is becoming increasingly clear that we are rapidly heading towards a cybernetic society, in which algorithms and social bots aim to control both the societal dynamics and individual behaviors. Springer International Publishing AG Linguistic Disobedience: Restoring Power to Civic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book asks how we—as citizens, immigrants, activists, teachers—can counter the abuse of language in our midst. How can we take back the power of language from those who flaunt that power to silence or erase us and our fellows? In search of answers, Linguistic Disobedience recalls ages and situations that made critiquing, correcting, and caring for language essential for survival. From turn-of-the-twentieth-century Central Europe to the miseries of the Third Reich, from the Movement for Black Lives to the ongoing effort to decolonize African languages, the study and practice of linguistic disobedience have been crucial. But what are we to do today, when reactionary supremacists and authoritarians are screen-testing their own forms of so-called disobedience to quash oppositional social justice movements and their languages? Blending lyric essay with cultural criticism, historical analysis, and applied linguistics, Linguistic Disobedience offers suggestions for a hopeful pathway forward in violent times.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Obeying and Disobeying.- Chapter 1: Critique.- Chapter 2: Correction.- Chapter 3: Care.- Epilogue: Finding Our Minds.

Book SynopsisThe purpose of this book is to present a self-contained description of the fun damentals of the theory of nonlinear control systems, with special emphasis on the differential geometric approach. The book is intended as a graduate text as weil as a reference to scientists and engineers involved in the analysis and design of feedback systems. The first version of this book was written in 1983, while I was teach ing at the Department of Systems Science and Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis. This new edition integrates my subsequent teaching experience gained at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1987, at the Carl-Cranz Gesellschaft in Oberpfaffenhofen in 1987, at the University of California in Berkeley in 1988. In addition to a major rearrangement of the last two Chapters of the first version, this new edition incorporates two additional Chapters at a more elementary level and an exposition of some relevant research findings which have occurred since 1985.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: Isidori's book is essential for anyone preparing for serious reading or basic research in the differential geometric approach to control theory and will not disappoint those mathematically trained. I have observed its use in the hands of two teachers other than the author; the students enjoyed it and made good use of it later. There is no universal solvent for nonlinear control problems, but the methods presented here are powerful. IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control 43 (1997) 1043-1044 (Reviewer: David L. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe information society and the information age are changing library services as well as library premises. This raises questions about what needs to be considered when planning and designing new library buildings in order to achieve attractive, efficient and future-oriented new library spaces. This new publication provides information and guidelines for the building planning process, whether you are planning a new public or academic library building. It reflects on fundamental issues, on new development trends and on the planning process. The library building process is seen from both the library manager's perspective as well as that of the architect and designer. Issues covered include what to consider when investigating the need for space, library design from a marketing viewpoint, green management and sustainability relating to library buildings and a layman's guide to reading plans. This publication and the IFLA guidelines provided are not seen as a traditional set of recommendations to be rigidly adhered to since this would be unrealistic in a fast-changing and global context. Rather, library managers and architects should read them in order to inform their thinking on key issues and establish a planning programme. They must then relate them to their own countries and circumstances by making the relevant local adjustments.Trade Review"Der Band stellt eine durchaus lesenswerte Sammlung von Beitragen zur Bibliotheksbauplanung dar."Robert Klaus Jopp in: B.I.T.-Online 372009

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Yuanpei program is an institution wide curriculum innovation, modeling on the core curriculum in Harvard which is committed to carrying out general education. This research investigated the major conflicts that arose in the process of initiation and implementation of the Yuanpei program, how these conflicts evolved during the process, and what were the sources of these conflicts. The conflict model, primarily derived from conflict theory, was adopted to interpret and analyze the process of curriculum innovation in this context. The study employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected primarily through interviews, observations and document analysis. The administrators, teachers and students were interviewed to gain insight into major conflicts arose, their processes and sources in process of the curriculum innovation. The researcher primarily observed program practices and operations, including program setting, the human, social environment (how participants interact and communicate), and program activities and participant behaviors. The researcher distinguished between conceptual conflicts and practical conflict in light of the different stages in which conflicts emerged. The researcher mainly identified three conceptual conflicts that represent the focus of debates: first, the two opposing opinions on how to balance between general education and specialized education; second, potential incongruence in the idea of the Yuanpei program; third, conflict between the changing need of society and traditional system of training. The researcher summarized four categories of practical conflicts in light of various issues: free-course selection, free-major selection, faculty advisor as well as general education elective courses, in each of which sub-themes were identified and analyzed. The researcher described how both conceptual and practical conflicts evolved. Each major conceptual conflict seems to go through similar stages based on the data, involving issue, confrontation and integration of claims of both sides. For practical conflicts, factors contributing to the escalation and de-escalation, moderation of conflicts were found by the researcher. The research identified different roles, incompatible values, contested resources and structural constraints as the main sources of conflict. Any conflict may involve more than one category or may be mainly due to one category. As such, the study is exploratory and contributes to the scholarship on educational change through its analysis of the curriculum innovation for general education in Peking University.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction.- Chapter 2 Theoretical Frameworks for Understanding the Innovation.- Chapter 3 The Concept of General.- Education Chapter 4 Methodology.- Chapter 5 The case of the Yuanpei program: Background and contextual factors.- Chapter 6 Findings—Major conflicts, its process and sources.- Chapter 7 Conclusions and Discussion.- References.- Appendix.
