University of Delaware Press Celebrity Across the Channel, 1750–1850

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisCelebrity Across the Channel, 1750-1850 is the first book to study and compare the concept of celebrity in France and Britain from 1750 to 1850 as the two countries transformed into the states we recognize today. It offers a transnational perspective by placing in dialogue the growing fields of celebrity studies in the two countries, especially by engaging with Antoine Lilti’s seminal work, The Invention of Celebrity, translated into English in 2017. With contributions from a diverse range of scholarly cultures, the volume has a firmly interdisciplinary scope over the time period 1750 to 1850, which was an era marked by social, political, and cultural upheaval. Bringing together the fields of history, politics, literature, theater studies, and musicology, the volume employs a firmly interdisciplinary scope to explore an era marked by social, political, and cultural upheaval. The organization of the collection allows for new readings of the similarities and differences in the understanding of celebrity in Britain and France. Consequently, the volume builds upon the questions that are currently at the heart of celebrity studies.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Antoine Lilti, Preface Anaïs Pédron and Clare Siviter, Introduction Section 1: Theorizing Celebrity Chapter 1: Chris Haffenden, “‘Immortality in This World’: Reconfiguring Celebrity and Monument in the Romantic Period” Chapter 2: Blake Smith, “The Scholar as Celebrity: Anquetil-Duperron’s Discours Préliminaire” Chapter 3: Meagan Mason, “The Physiognomies of Virtuosi in Paris, 1830–1848” Section 2: Representing Celebrity Chapter 4: Anna Senkiw, “‘To Perdition’: Politicians, Players, and the Press” Chapter 5: Anaïs Pédron, “Clairon’s Strategies to Achieve Celebrity and Glory” Chapter 6: Miranda Kiek, “Celebrity—Thou Art Translated! • Brief Lives

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Brief Lives

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFull edition in modern spelling of Aubrey's racy portraits of greatfigures of 16-17c England, from Sir Walter Raleigh to John Milton. John Aubrey's racy portraits of the great figures of 17th-centuryEngland stand alongside Pepys's diary as a vivid evocation of the period. Aubrey was born in 1626, the son of a Wiltshire squire; at the age of 26 he inherited a family estate encumbered with debt, and finally went bankrupt in the 1670s. From then on he led a sociable, rootless existence at the houses of friends - from Oxford and the Middle Temple -pursuing the antiquarian studies which had always obsessed him. At his death in 1697 he left a mass of notes and manuscripts, among them the material for Brief Lives. He never managed to put even a single life into logical order; all we have are the raw materials, scribbled down -`tumultuously as they occurred to my thoughts'. With this full, modern English edition, which reproduces Aubrey's words as closely as possible, Richard Barber introduces us to Aubrey and his world, tells how the Lives came into being and enables many new readers to enjoy this eccentric masterpiece.

  • A Biographical Dictionary of Australian and New

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Biographical Dictionary of Australian and New

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book documents the history of economic discourse in Australia and New Zealand from the early days of European settlement. Many of the early economists were immigrants (William Hearn, Charles Pearson, Catherine Spence, David Syme). A few (such as W.C. Wentworth, born on the First Fleet) were proud natives, self-taught but confident and assertive in their use of economic arguments. The 20th century brought European refugees (Heinz Arndt, Harro Bernardelli, Fred Gruen, Kurt Singer) and a healthy crop of locally-born public servant-economists (Bernard Ashwin, John Crawford, 'Nugget' Coombs, Leslie Melville, Roland Wilson). There were theorists of international renown (Richard Manning, Wilfred Salter, Trevor Swan), some who made important contributions to public policy debates (Ronald Henderson, Eric Russell) or distinguished themselves in econometrics (Rex Bergstrom, Bill Phillips). The 130 entries in this volume have been written by more than 50 international authorities, revealing the depth and diversity of economics in Australia and New Zealand over almost two centuries. This biographical dictionary is a rich and comprehensive original reference work that will appeal to many economists and researchers of history and public policy in addition to those involved in the history of economic thought.Trade Review'The editorial achievement in this volume is impressive. Not only has the canvas of potential entries been remarkably thorough, but also the space allotted to each seems nicely in accord with their importance.' -- Craufurd Goodwin, History of Economics Review'Academics, graduate students, journalists, and researchers and historians who work within government and non-governmental organisations and the private sector will find this book a valuable resource and an enjoyable read.' -- Susan K. Schroeder, Australian Economic History Review'. . . this is not just a reference book, wonderful though it is as a reference book, but a book to be read through from cover to cover with immense pleasure and much profit.' -- Steven Kates, EH.Net'This is a delightful volume: a valuable reference book and at the same time an account of economics in Australia that can be read right through as history. This is the way the history of science should be presented, as an account not only of the giants of the field, but of the pygmies as well. Happily this is not an exercise in hagiography. John King has arranged for admirable balance in this collection between entries on such major figures as Colin Clark, Timothy Coghlan, and Douglas Copland, while not forgetting more colorful others such as one who is described as "a club-footed drunk and recidivist bankrupt who occasionally assaulted his colleagues".' -- Craufurd Goodwin, Duke University, USTable of ContentsContents: 1. • Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century British

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century British

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDuring the 19th century there was no clear boundary line between those who were considered to be part of the scientific community and those who were seen as outsiders. It was during this century that the categories of "professional scientist", "amateur" and "popularizer of science" were being debated and constructed. As a result, in recent times scholars of the period have explored the important roles of neglected amateurs, women and members of the working class. Scholars in the field are continually broadening their definition of the terms "science" and "scientist". This dictionary contains more than 1200 entries on both major and minor figures who had an impact on British science. By examining how the theories and practices of scientists were shaped by Victorian beliefs about religion, gender, imperialism and politics, the dictionary presents a rich panorama of the development of science in the 19th century. As well as containing entries on those working in traditional scientific areas, such as geology, physics, astronomy, chemistry, mathematics and biology, the dictionary also covers the human sciences such as anthropology, sociology, psychology and medicine. In addition, areas such as phrenology, mesmerism, spiritualism, scientific illustration, scientific journalism and publishing, instrument making and government policy are covered. By including new figures working in these areas, and by paying attention to the social and cultural context in which they lived, the dictionary reflects the richer picture of the 19th-century period gradually being developed by scholars in the field.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Biographical Dictionary of Dissenting

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a thoroughly updated and revised edition of the first, and definitive, biographical dictionary of dissenting economists. It is an extensive and authoritative guide to economists both past and present, providing biographical, bibliographical and critical information on over 100 economists working in the non-neoclassical traditions broadly defined. It includes entries on, amongst others, radical economists, Marxists, post-Keynesians, behaviourists, Kaleckians and institutionalists. The book demonstrates the extent and richness of the radical heterodox tradition in economics. This second edition continues to mark a departure from what is usually found in a biographical dictionary for, in addition to providing standard biographical information, living economists have themselves been asked to state their principal contributions to economics, supplemented by a list of their leading books and articles. A Biographical Dictionary of Dissenting Economists, Second Edition will continue to be an essential reference source for instructors, researchers and students of economics, its development and history.Trade Review'This is a fascinating book of the personal stories of how heterodoxy re-emerged, evolved, survived and developed. It makes great reading, not only for sheer enjoyment, but also for gaining insight into the major concerns, theories and policies of dissenting political economy. It is a 'must buy' for anyone interested in alternative perspectives of economy and society, and it is essential for every university library. The editors have done a great job in bringing to life the main concerns of the dissenters in a humanistic fashion. The revival of heterodox political economy commenced in earnest in the 1960s and it is now maturing. Also, its various schools are starting to recognise the many unifying or complementary aspects of its development. This volume provides many insights into the critical concerns likely to become more important in the future, as an increasing number of economists recognise the importance of a broader study of the social and political foundations of production, distribution and exchange, and the reproduction of the institutions underlying such activities.'Table of ContentsContents: Introduction Samir Amin, Tom Asimakopulos, Clarence Edwin Ayres, A.K. Book Synopsis a thoroughly revised, updated and extended third edition containing the most cited economists from 1984-1996 the only biographical dictionary of major economists to appear in any language provides critical information on over 1,000 living economists and some 500 deceased economists includes a country index and an index of major fields of work each of the more than 1,600 entries gives pertinent biographical data This major reference work has been thoroughly revised, updated and extended for the third edition. It is the only biographical dictionary of major economists to appear in any language. As an extensive and authoritative guide to economists both past and present who have made a substantial contribution to the subject, it provides biographical, bibliographical and critical information on over one thousand living economists and some five hundred deceased economists. Each of the entries gives pertinent biographical data, a select bibliography, an assessment of the economist's distinctive contribution and a listing of those critical studies important for an understanding of his or her work. One particularly useful aspect of the book is that the living entrants themselves provided data on what they believe to be their major contribution to economics, thus offering a unique self criticism of their work. The living economists have been selected by the objective method of identifying the most frequently cited economists in the social sciences citation index. The entrants are not confined to economists working in the English language but include all major economists on a worldwide basis. The book includes a country index as well as an index of major fields of work.Trade Review'. . . as one reviewer said of the second edition, what was an interesting experiment became a standard work of reference. With this third edition it is now a vital resource for the profession. . .' -- Roger Middleton, Journal of the History of Economic Thought'Who's Who in Economics is indispensable for any library and department of economics, as well as for individual scholars playing an active role in the academic community. No other source presents so many facts on the leading economists as conveniently and reliably. . . . Blaug's volume is not only an outstanding source of information on individual economists, but it also provides a rich database for research on the economics profession. Thus, several academic articles systematically analysed the second edition, and Blaug explicitly invites research based on the third edition.' -- Bruno S. Book SynopsisThis is a unique and conclusive reference work about the 6,000 individual men and women known to us from China’s formative first empires. Over decennia Michael Loewe (Cambridge, UK) has painstakingly collected all biographical information available. Not only those are dealt with who set the literary forms and intellectual background of traditional China, such as writers, scholars, historians and philosophers, but also those officials who administered the empire, and the military leaders who fought in civil warfare or with China’s neighbours. The work draws on primary historical sources as interpreted by Chinese, Japanese and Western scholars and as supplemented by archaeological finds and inscriptions. By devoting extensive entries to each of the emperors the author provides the reader with the necessary historical context and gives insight into the dynastic disputes and their far-reaching consequences. No comparable work exists for this important period of Chinese history. Without exaggeration a real must for historians of both China and other cultures.Trade Review'Simply said, this is a work of consummate mastery and high utility. It will last for decades and beyond. All who have occasion to study the early imperioal period are deeply in Loewe’s debt for this great gift. The book and its author deserve the Prix Stanislas Julien.' Paul W. Kroll, Journal of the American Oriental Society, 2002. '...une mine de renseignements inestimables sur tous les aspects de la vie politique et sociale dans la Chine des Han Occidentaux.' Michel Cartier, Review of Bibliography in Sinology, 2001. '…an invaluable resource to serious students and enlightened amateurs alike…A source book of unprecedented depth and scope, the biographical dictionary includes several features that make it far superior to any comparable work known to me…This volume now appears to me to be an unexpected boon of inestimable worth, and the debt owed to Michael Loewe for his painstaking labours is huge.'
