    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisAs Singapore enters its 50th year of independence, it is a good time to reflect on its past as well as look to the future. 50 Years of Singapore-Europe Relations: Celebrating Singapore's Connections with Europe is one such contribution to the wide collection of books commemorating Singapore's 50th birthday. The essays and articles in this edited volume capture historical moments, reveal the heartfelt wishes and thoughtful comments of Europeans who have made Singapore their home, chronicle some of the long-standing partnerships and ponder the future challenges of Singapore.This unique book contains a wide range of essays and articles reflecting on the strong connections that Singapore enjoys with Europe, not only at the official level, but also through the contributions that Europeans and European companies have made — and continue to make — which enrich Singaporean society. These essays provide a kaleidoscope of views on Singapore — they explore how close ties and partnerships are forged between nations, how businesses see Singapore as a trustworthy partner and place to invest and establish roots, and, at a more personal level, the articles also present different perspectives on the strengths, and at times, the weaknesses of Singapore as viewed through the eyes of Europeans who live and work in Singapore and consider it as their home.In commemorating Singapore's 50th birthday, this book will add to the understanding of the richness and diversity of Singapore society, and help readers appreciate and reflect on how openness and connectivity have contributed to the success of Singapore in its first 50 years.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Celebrating Singapore's Connections with Europe - 50 Years and More (Yeo Lay Hwee); Connections and Reflections - Multi-dimensional Facets of Singapore-Europe Relations: Singapore and Europe: 50 Years of Relations (K Shanmugam) Europe's Contributions to Singapore's Contemporary Culture (Michael Pulch) Reflections on Singapore's Contributions to Europe (Yeo Lay Hwee) 1965 and 2015, Europe and Singapore - Some Changes and Constants in a Cultural Geography Perspective (Barnard E Turner) Debunking some "Euromyths" - Understanding the European Union and its Connections with Singapore (Loke Hoe Yeong) The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM): A Bridge between East and West (Goh Chok Tong) Singapore and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) (Tommy Koh and Peggy Kek) Singapore, Germany and the European Union - Political Dialogue for Closer Cooperation and Mutual Understanding (Wilhelm Hofmeister) Enduring Bilateral Ties: Belgians in Singapore: Helping to Write the City-state's (Hi)story (Gerard Cockx); The Mermaid and the Merlion: 50 Years with Denmark and Singapore (Written by Mathilde Moyell Juul (commissioned by Royal Danish Embassy)); Preserving the Excellent Connection between Finland and Singapore through the Young Generation (Tuukka Vaisanen); The Pride of Italy - Cultural and Scientific Cooperation with Singapore (Contribution from the Embassy of Italy and Italian Cultural Institute); Singapore and Luxembourg: Small Partners, Big Visions (Contribution from the Luxembourg Embassy); Singapore and the Netherlands: Building the Future Together (Written by Katrijn de Ronde (commissioned by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands)); Polish People in Singapore - the Foundation of Strong Singapore-Poland Relations (Zenon Kosiniak-Kamysz and Katarzyna Kryczka); Singapore and Slovakia - Small Countries, Strong Stories (Michal Slivovic); From Commerce and Industry to Education and Science: From Central Europe to Singapore: Bata and Bat'a (Tomas Smetanka); From Palm Oil to Consumer Goods' Giant - the story of Unilever in Singapore (Benjamin Felix van Roij); Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) - A Singapore Story with European Roots (Benjamin Felix van Roij); Science and Research Collaboration between Singapore and Europe (Bertil Andersson and Tony Mayer); Engineering the Future: Academic Excellence between Germany and Singapore (Contribution from TUM-Asia); Irish Connections - Ireland's Intrepid Educationalists in Singapore (Rosemary Lim); People Matter(s): Brother Joseph McNally - Son of Ballintubber, Ireland and Singapore (Molly Hennigan and Cheryl Julia Lee); Dr Albert Winsemius: A Dutchman among Singapore's Pioneers (Benjamin Felix van Roij); The Polish Professor who Maps our Brains - Prof Dr Wieslaw L Nowinski (Charles Chia); Art and Science in Singapore in the Last 15 Years - a Personal Journey and Reflection (Isabelle Desjeux); Beppe De Vito - The Italian Restaurateur (Charles Chia); From Croatia to Singapore: Marko Kraljevic's Journey (Dexter Lee);

    World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Foreign Direct Investment And Small And Medium

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThere is a large literature dealing with the spillover effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to emerging and developing economies at the aggregate level. Beyond the aggregate impacts, a growing number of studies also examine the impact of FDI spillovers on firms of different sizes, especially small and medium enterprises (SME). This book is dedicated to exploring issues relating to the various interactions between FDI flows, productivity spillovers and SMEs in Asia and beyond. It studies globalization, FDI, and regional innovation in China, and trade and investment liberalization in India. It analyses how to promote SMEs and enhance labor productivity in Singapore. It investigates the impact of intellectual property rights processes on productivity growth. It documents the use of finance and financing patterns of informal firms. It uses empirical analysis to point out the limitations of traditional banks lending to SMEs and suggests possible policy approaches facilitating them to access growth capital. It also provides an empirical investigation of the main determinants of entrepreneurial activities.

  • Esoteric Buddhism in Mediaeval Maritime Asia:

    ISEAS Esoteric Buddhism in Mediaeval Maritime Asia:

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThis volume advocates a trans-regional, and maritime, approach to studying the genesis, development and circulation of tantric (or Esoteric) Buddhism across Maritime Asia from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries CE. The book lays emphasis on the mobile networks of human agents (‘Masters’), textual sources (‘Texts’) and images (‘Icons’) through which tantric Buddhist traditions spread.Capitalising on recent research and making use of both disciplinary and area-focused perspectives, this book highlights the role played by tantric Buddhist maritime networks in shaping intra-Asian connectivity. In doing so, it reveals the limits of a historiography that is premised on land-based transmission of Buddhism from a South Asian ‘homeland’ and advances an alternative historical narrative that overturns the popular perception regarding Southeast Asia as a ‘periphery’ that passively received overseas influences. Thus, a strong point is made for the appreciation of the region as both a crossroads and rightful terminus of Buddhist cults, and for the re-evaluation of the creative and transformative force of Southeast Asian agents in the transmission of tantric Buddhism across mediaeval Asia.

    Book SynopsisEmerging markets play an increasingly important role in the global economy, accounting for 31% of global GDP and more than 50% of global foreign direct investment in 2012. However, doing business in emerging markets remains subject to a high degree of 'policy risk,' namely the risk that a government will discriminatorily change the laws, regulations, or contracts governing an investment — or will fail to enforce them — in a way that reduces an investor's financial returns.Institutions, Institutional Change and Economic Performance in Emerging Markets brings together a series of Harvard Business School case studies on emerging markets. This book is an invaluable resource for researchers in the fields of economics business to understand the role of specific economic and political institutions in shaping the business environment and economic growth in emerging markets. It gives answers to the following questions: When will governments define and enforce property rights? When will the division of policy authority across different government agents (e.g. federal and subnational governments, or politicians and bureaucrats) enable better policy decisions? And what are the consequences of globalization for the economic growth and stability of emerging market countries?Table of ContentsProperty Rights and Government Policy (India, China); Property Rights and Business Opportunities (Dharavi, Fox); Incentives of Government Agents (Financial Regulation in Indonesia, Regional Development in India); Global Institutions and Globalization (The World Bank, NAFTA); Country Strategies in a Global Economy (India, Indonesia);

    Book SynopsisIn the emerging narrative of sustainable development in Asia, the essential challenge is to reduce the use of natural resources and environmental degradation alongside the increasing demand for goods and services. To achieve this, Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015, aims at reconciling the three goals of minimising the extraction of natural resources from the environment, limiting waste and emissions over the life cycle of goods and services and improving human development and wellbeing.Sustainable Asia: Supporting the Transition to Sustainable Consumption and Production in Asian Developing Countries provides an overview and analysis of the current status of SCP in Asian developing countries. The book focuses on projects supported by the EU-funded SWITCH-Asia Programme, a regional development cooperation programme promoting the adoption of SCP practices among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and consumer groups in Asia since 2007.For readers looking for a comprehensive introduction to the topic of SCP together with a detailed analysis of the current developmental situation in various Asian developing countries and key sectors such as manufacturing, tourism, renewable energy and agriculture, this book is an invaluable tool. • Economic Growth And Development (Third Edition)

    World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Economic Growth And Development (Third Edition)

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThis textbook covers the full range of topics and issues normally included in a course on economic growth and development. Both mainstream economic perspectives as well as the multi-paradigmatic, inter-disciplinary, and dynamic-evolutionary perspectives from heterodox economics are detailed. Economic development is viewed in terms of the long-run well-being of humanity, social stability, environmental sustainability, and just distribution of economic gains, not simply as the growth of GDP. Furthermore, this textbook explicitly recognizes the complexity of economic development by linking economic activity to our broader social and natural environments.The textbook's unique feature is its focus on the natural environment. Both the historical effects of economic development on the environment and the environmental constraints on future economic development are thoroughly discussed in two chapters on environmental issues and policies. In fact, because economic development is defined in terms of economic, social, and environmental sustainability, the natural environment is included in discussions throughout the book.The textbook is inter-disciplinary: knowledge from fields such as sociology, psychology, political science, economic history, and ecology is called on to enhance the economic analysis. A thorough historical account of the development of the principal paradigms of economic development is also included, and the important issues of institutional development and cultural change merit their own chapters. Two chapters on technological change holistically focus on production technologies as well as the dynamic performance of entire economic, social, and ecological systems. Also, the important relationship between economic development and globalization is presented in three chapters on international trade, international finance and investment, and immigration from both orthodox and heterodox perspectives.Table of ContentsThinking About Economic Development: The Complexity of Economic Development; Measuring Economic Development; Holistic Measurement of Economic Development; Models of Economic Development: The Evolution of Growth Models: From Smith to Harrod-Domar; Solow's Neoclassical Growth Model; Economic Development and the Natural Environment; Technological Change: What Is It and How Do We Model It?; Dynamic Models of Technological Change; Key Elements of Economic Development: Population Growth; Human Capital: Humans' Acquired Abilities; The Financial Sector of the Economy; Institutions and Sustainable Development; Formal Government Institutions; International Economic Integration: International Trade and Development; International Investment, International Finance and Economic Development; International Economic Policy: Heterodox Approaches; Development Issues: The Distribution of Income and Wealth; Policies for Sustainable Economic Development;

In the process, he contributed decisively to the industrialisation, not only of Penang but also of Malaysia as a whole. This collection of articles tells the story of how the declining fortunes of the port of Penang was turned around through daring and forceful leadership into the industrialised society that it is today.

    Book SynopsisThis article reports the findings of an online survey conducted in November–December 2021 on Indonesians' experience and perception of fintech tools, focusing on fintech adoption in the Greater Jakarta region, which besides Jakarta, includes Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi.One key finding is that, in the Greater Jakarta region, socio-economic status as measured by income is not a key determinant of fintech adoption. This is likely due to the more developed and mature ICT infrastructure in the Greater Jakarta region, which makes fintech tools readily accessible.However, the kinds of fintech tools that are more likely to be used—M-banking, E-wallet, Online Lending, Investment, Donations, and so on—are influenced by factors such as income, education, gender, age and occupation, suggesting that different fintech tools appeal to different groups in society according to their needs and resources.Psychological factors that are important in the adoption of fintech include having many choices in the needed financial services and feeling in control. While fintech users are concerned about data leaks and fraud, this does not deter them from using fintech.It may be anticipated that with the deepening of ICT infrastructure and public education on the safe use of fintech, fintech usage in Indonesia will continue to spread throughout the country.

    NUS Press Law, Institutions and Malaysian Economic

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisThis pioneering volume develops an institutionalist analysis of Malaysia's post-colonial economy by exploring the political economy of development and particularly the interface between economics and law. The various authors show that economic policy initiatives in Malaysia have often been accompanied by corresponding legislative and regulatory reforms intended to create an appropriate legal environment, and that economic problems or crises arising from earlier policies have led to major legislative innovations.The volume begins with a survey of Malaysia's colonial legal heritage and significant postcolonial developments, and the relationship between economic change, institutional developments and the law. Colonial land law transformed the rural Malay population, and the authors show that the routine depiction of this sector of the economy as a 'traditional' relic of the pre-colonial era is misleading. With regard to industry, the government changed course after independence, promoting manufacturing investments and technological progress, and forging new industrial relations between the state and trade unions. Drawing on this background the book rejects claims that corporate governance failures caused the financial crisis of the 1990s, and criticizes claims for the superiority of Anglo-American arrangements for corporate governance.

  • Economic Disparity in Rural Myanmar:

    NUS Press Economic Disparity in Rural Myanmar:

    10 in stock

    Book SynopsisMarket liberalization in Myanmar began in 1988 and had some unanticipated consequences. As farmers began to operate in a context with greatly reduced government control, there was an explosion in the production of green gram, which became extremely popular as an export crop. However, market liberalization in the industry surrounding this new export-oriented crop gave rise to growing economic disparities, largely determined by access to land, capital and credit.Ikuko Okamoto explores these issues through a detailed case study of Thongwa Township, a place east of Yangon (Rangoon) in the major green gram producing region in the country. She shows that farmers responded quickly to policy changes and made maximum use of new opportunities, even in a country where socialist policies had previously limited such opportunities. She also traces the consequences for different social groups in rural Myanmar, and shows that traders benefited the most from the new arrangements, and landless laborers the least. Her research offers important insights into the transition from a socialist to a market-based economy, and local-level responses to market incentives. It also shows that the success or failure of new crops in a peasant economy largerly depends on whether the crop is compatible with the initial resource endowment.

    Book SynopsisLate industrializing countries are able to pick strategies for economic development based on the experiences of countries that preceded them. Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (the CLMV countries) were closed off from the international community for many years, and they began to embrace a market economy at around the same time. Each bypassed the import-substitution strategy adopted by other Southeast Asian countries and began industrialization efforts with export growth funded by Foreign Direct Investment.The outcomes differed significantly owing to geographical location, government policies, and internal economic conditions. Industrialization in Late-Developing ASEAN Countries explores these differences through case studies based on an extended research program conducted by the Institute of Developing Economies in Tokyo, which offered insights into models of economic growth, and into the trajectories followed by the four countries examined.

  • The Economic Transition in Myanmar After 1988:

    NUS Press The Economic Transition in Myanmar After 1988:

    10 in stock

    Book SynopsisFor many years Myanmar operated an inward-looking economic system built on import substitution. Ultimately this policy collapsed, leaving a legacy of inefficient state economic enterprises and widespread poverty. Political unrest in 1988 led a newly installed military government to liberalize the economy, opening it to foreign investment and private trade. This move towards a market economy was in line with regional trends, but political instability forced the country to adopt policies that were different from those of neighboring countries. By analyzing economic policy and performance across the economic spectrum, this book presents an overall picture of economic development in Myanmar between 1988 and the early 2000s. The authors synthesize both macro and micro level data to overcome some of the limitations of unreliable national statistics, and show how the government attempted to deal with two key issues. The first was how to reform the inefficient socialistic economic system in conformity with a market economy, and the second was how to develop the agricultural and use the underdeveloped economy to alleviate mass poverty.

  • The Cardamom Conundrum: Reconciling Development

    NUS Press The Cardamom Conundrum: Reconciling Development

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThe word ""conundrum"" describes a puzzle whose solution also requires the resolution of a paradox. In this instance, the paradox starts with two widely held and conflicting assumptions: the pathway to a modern economy can be achieved by exploiting and monetising a country's natural resources and the long-term prosperity of a nation is dependent on the conservation of those very same natural resources. This book consciously seeks to avoid the mentality of ""trade-offs"" where pro-development advocates view conservation efforts as impediments and conservationists are convinced that development inevitably leads to a loss for nature. Instead, the author seeks to demonstrate the wise management of a nation's renewable natural resources will promote better economic growth and does so by evaluating the opportunities in the still pristine forests of the Cardamom Mountains and surrounding landscapes. Resolving the Cardamom Conundrum demands an economic model that provides robust economic growth, which alleviates poverty over the short term and eradicates it over the medium term - any other solution is morally unacceptable and completely impractical. The author points the way by identifying innovative options linked to climate finance and low carbon development strategies that span the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
