  • SDGs, Transformation, and Quality Growth: Insights from International Cooperation

Springer Verlag, Singapore SDGs, Transformation, and Quality Growth: Insights from International Cooperation

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is an Open Access book. The primary objective of this book is to seek out insights into the concept of high-quality growth (HQG). It explores the essential attributes of HQG, such as inclusiveness, sustainability, and resilience, as well as its relationship with transformation, by drawing principally on illustrative cases and instances of international cooperation. The United Nations document on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) states that “We resolve to create conditions for sustainable, inclusive and sustained economic growth, shared prosperity and decent work for all.” As such, the concept of quality growth is inherent in many aspects of the SDGs. A similar approach can be seen in the Development Cooperation Charter announced by the Japanese government in 2015. According to the Charter, one of the most important challenges of development is quality growth and the reduction of poverty achieved through such growth. The approach in the Charter emphasizes inclusiveness, sustainability, and resilience. This volume is a pioneering study on quality growth as well as its relationship with SDGs and transformation. Comprehensive studies on quality growth are very few. The case study approach distinguishes the present volume from some previous literature that discussed quality growth within the framework of general policy. Instead, in this book, concrete cases and experiences provide insights into hands-on “ingredients”. Through the case studies, it can be seen more clearly that transformation and quality growth are phenomena that do not occur automatically but, rather, ones that require specific, properly designed strategies and approaches. Another unique feature of this book is that it aims to make explicit some of the consistent, but implicit, principles of Japan’s international cooperation.Table of ContentsSDGs, Transformation, and Quality Growth: An Overview.- Transforming Economies for Jobs and Inclusive Growth.- Quality growth focusing on resilience to disaster risks.

  • Environmental Sustainability in Emerging Markets:

Springer Verlag, Singapore Environmental Sustainability in Emerging Markets:

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIncreasing evidence of environmental deterioration in emerging markets, climate change, and consequences of environmental waste have compelled not only businesses but also consumers to reduce the environmental burden, mitigate waste and preserve resources for future generations. What actions, strategies, practices, and policies can be developed to sustain environmental sustainability in emerging markets? This book brings together fresh insights, ideas, and new research directions. This book consists of eleven chapters which examine environmental sustainability from consumer, organisation and policy perspectives. These chapters are contributed by emerging and eminent authors from different regions of the world including Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. This book provides an insightful and valuable compendium for sustainability researchers, businesses, educators, and policymakers, and readers concerned about socio-environmental issues and sustainable development. The book provides policymakers and businesses with information to assist the development of policies, strategies, and programs which will develop and encourage environmentally sustainable behaviours and practices in emerging markets and the wider global communityTable of ContentsChapter 1: Promoting Environmentally Friendly Behaviours in Emerging Markets: An Urgent Need Ninh Nguyen, Asia Pacific College of Business & Law, Charles Darwin University, Australia Hoang Viet Nguyen, Department of Research Administration, Thuong Mai University, Vietnam Clare D’Souza, La Trobe Business School, La Trobe University, Australia Carolyn Strong, Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, Wales Environmental degradation is a pressing global problem. Notably, emerging and developing countries are the major contributors of climate change and air pollution owing to their rapid economic growth, large consumer base and unsustainable consumption. This chapter discusses the environmental problems facing emerging markets, hence the urgent need for encouraging consumer pro-environmental behaviour and corporate environmental strategies in such countries. Chapter 2: The Green Consumers in Emerging Markets: Who are They? Rambalak Yadav, Institute of Management Technology, Hyderabad, India Profiling green consumer segments is important for policy makers, marketers and socio-environmental organisations that seek to promote green purchase behaviour. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the profile of green consumers in several emerging markets with respect to socio-demographic variables such as gender, age, education, income and household characteristics. Chapter 3: Green Food Consumption in China Van Thac Dang, School of Business, Shantou University, China Jianming Wang, School of Business Administration, Zhejiang University of Finance & Economics, China Xiangzhi Bu, School of Business, Shantou University, China Green food consumption is a core issue that contributes to solving environmental pollution and achieving sustainable development. This chapter aims to investigate the antecedents of green food consumption, which in turn might enhance consumer wellbeing. Data were obtained from urban Chinese consumers. The chapter’s findings enrich the extant literature relating to green food consumption and have practical implications for business managers and policymakers. Chapter 4: Key Determinants of Green Purchase Behaviour in Vietnam Tan Vo-Thanh, La Rochelle Business School – Excelia Group, France Bach Khoa Nguyen, Faculty of Marketing, Thuongmai University, Vietnam Fostering the purchase of green products makes an important contribution to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, especially those relating to sustainable production and consumption. This chapters examines the factors that may enhance or impede consumer intention to purchase green products in the context of Vietnam. Implications for managers and policymakers are also discussed. Chapter 5: Sustainability in Adventure Tourism: Lessons from Nepal Muhammad A. Saleem, Asia Pacific College of Business & Law, Charles Darwin University, Australia Naveed Akhtar, Faculty of Management Sciences, National University of Modern Languages, Pakistan Adventure tourism contributes heavily to the national economies of many emerging markets. Nepal is one of the largest recipients of adventure tourists in the mountain climbing sector as it is home to 09 out of 14 world’s eight thousand meters high mountains. More recently, mountain climbing has gained huge popularity and the number of mountain climbers visiting Nepal has increased exponentially. With the revenues these climbers bring to Nepal, there is a growing challenge of deteriorating ecological health of adventure tourist sites, resulting from unsustainable practices of the climbers who intend to summit these mountains each year. This chapter intends to shed light on some of the growing challenges facing the key adventure tourist sites within Nepal and proposes interventions to reinforce sustainable behaviours for improving tourist site value. Chapter 6: Predicting Household Recycling Behaviour in an Emerging Market Economy Malliga Marimuthu, La Trobe Business School, La Trobe University, Australia Ji Lu, Department of Business & Social Sciences, Dalhousie University, Canada Encouraging recycling is important for environmental sustainability since non-recycled waste contributes to air pollution and water pollution, putting human and animal lives at risk. This chapter examines the determinants of recycling behaviour and provides implications for governmental agencies and socio-environmental organisations in educating and promoting recycling behaviour. Chapter 7: Water Conservation Practices: The Roles of Personal Characteristics and Socio-economic Factors Ngoc Bao Le, Faculty of Marketing, Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, Vietnam Lester Johnson, Swinburne Business School, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia Developing countries are most affected by water scarcity and poor water quality. This chapter determines the roles of personal factors and socio-economic factors in explaining water conservation practices. Based on the chapter’s findings, implications are drawn for planning effective intervention campaigns. Chapter 8: A Comprehensive Model of Energy Saving Behaviours Antonio Lobo, Swinburne Business School Swinburne University of Technology, Australia Steven Greenland, Asia Pacific College of Business & Law, Charles Darwin University, Australia Energy consumption creates serious environmental problems and is expected to rise by one-third from current levels through to 2040. Energy management – the monitoring, control and optimisation of energy use – is therefore an important corporate social responsibility, with energy efficiency an imperative concern. This chapter develops and validates a comprehensive model of energy saving behaviours in the context of an emerging market economy. Chapter 9: Dealing with Environmental Problems on Social Media Platforms Le Van Huy, University of Economics—The University of Danang, Vietnam Hoang Long Phan, University of Economics—The University of Danang, Vietnam This chapter aims to investigate travellers’ trust and attitude toward green destinations through studying their ability, motivation, and opportunity in using social media platforms. The chapter is important to add to the current knowledge in tourism, especially sustainable development goals in tourism that has been getting attention by researchers and policy makers. Chapter 10: Eco-friendly Export Business Strategies Adopted by Seafood Processing Firms Binh Do, Department of Strategic Management, Thuongmai University, Vietnam Uyen Nguyen, Department of Strategic Management, Thuongmai University, Vietnam There is growing awareness about the adverse impact of seafood production and processing on the ecosystem. This includes overfishing of endangered species, increasing waste materials, water pollution and ecological disruption. Promoting more eco-friendly seafood processing is therefore imperative for environmental sustainability. This chapter aims to develop and validate a comprehensive model of institutional – stakeholder drivers of eco-friendly business export strategies in the seafood processing sector and their consequences on export markets. Chapter 11: Market Orientation and Sustainability of SMEs in the Food Industry in Indonesia Marthin Nanere, La Trobe Business School, La Trobe University, Australia Mokhamad Arwani, Universitas Muria Kudus, Indonesia SMEs are a growing industry in Indonesia. However, protective policies like reservation scheme for SMEs have distorted manufacturing prospects within these firms, more than supported, adoption of appropriate technologies among SMEs. These firms are faced with many impediments, including a lack of capital, skills, and technology, which creates poor competitiveness. More recent studies have suggested that SMEs engagement in green practices is more by the intrinsic values of the owners with strong morality-based motives than the organisational need for competitive advantage. This chapters aims to systemize a cohesive model that identifies the critical success factors and barriers for sustainability processes adopted by SMEs. This model was then validated by obtaining data from Indonesian SMEs in the food industry. Chapter 12: CSR Practices of Textile Firms: Empirical Evidence from an Asian Emerging Market Thi Thu Hien Phan, University of Economic - Technology for Industries, Vietnam Simon Pervan, RMIT Business School, RMIT, Australia The textile and apparel industry has been criticized for its heavy use of labour and large amount of waste discharged into the environment. This chapter comprehensively investigates the direct and indirect effects of CSR practices on financial performance in the Vietnamese textile sector. The findings provide fresh insights into the usefulness and effectiveness of CSR practices as well as encourage firms to adopt such practices for financial improvements and sustainable development. Chapter 13: Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development Menuka Jayaratne, La Trobe Business School, La Trobe University, Australia Clare D’Souza, La Trobe Business School, La Trobe University, Australia The sustainability movement drives entrepreneurs introducing new sustainability-derived products and services to help sustain nature and communities. This chapter contributes to an understanding of sustainability entrepreneurs as those who emerge from consumer concern to introduce innovative sustainability derived products, processes, and services for gain, where gain includes economic and non-economic gain to individuals, the economy, and society. Chapter 14: Sustainability Strategies for Urban Mass Transit – Case of Pakistan Asif Yaseen, Department of Commerce, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Pakistan Muhammad A. Saleem, Asia Pacific College of Business & Law, Charles Darwin University, Australia The transportation sector enjoys a central stage in the growth of any economy. Particularly for emerging economies, the access to jobs, health, and education has improved considerably with investment in urban mass transit infrastructure. In Pakistan, Rapid Bus Transit System, launched in four metropolitan cities, funded through considerable international debt, has remained in debate for its environmental sustainability and economic viability issues. This chapter provides a detailed overview of Urban Mass Transit System in Pakistan and proposes models/strategies to improve its environmental and economic performance. Chapter 15: Environmentally Sustainable Behaviours: Strategies and Policies for Mitigating Barriers in Emerging Markets Ninh Nguyen, Asia Pacific College of Business & Law, Charles Darwin University, Australia Bach Yen Tran, School of Economics, Can Tho University, Vietnam Hoang Viet Nguyen, Faculty of Research Administration, Thuongmai University, Vietnam This chapter aims to identify key barriers to consumer purchase of eco-friendly products and later suggests intervention strategies and policies to mitigate such barriers in developing countries. It would be of interest to key stakeholders including policymakers, marketers and social-environmental organizations in the development of more effective green strategies.

Book SynopsisThis Open Access book explores the multifaceted nature of agricultural and rural development in Asia and examines the extent to which the Asian experience is being replicated in contemporary Africa. This volume compiles the works of top scholars who provided analyses and evidences from household-level surveys collected for many years in several parts of Asia and Africa. The most important finding presented in this book is that African agricultural development has evolved following the pathways of Asian agricultural development. The common pathways are borrowed technology from abroad and adaptive research in rice farming; secured property rights on natural resources; adoption of ICTs; investments in human capital, including training; and launching of the high-value agriculture. In both continents, agricultural development started in the crop sector, which had a strong tendency to induce the dynamic development of other sectors in rural areas.Table of ContentsYou’ve Come a Long Way SinceMasao KikuchiIntroduction: Agricultural Development in Asia and AfricaJonna P. Book SynopsisSince its founding in 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations has been an increasingly large part of the life of Southeast Asia, although most people in the region know very little about it. ASEAN has helped bring peace and stability to the region. It has successfully engaged the world's major powers, in East Asia and beyond. ASEAN has taken steps to integrate the regional economy as an important means of cooperatively improving the region's competitiveness, attracting investments, generating jobs, raising incomes, and lowering costs and prices. ASEAN has also formed networks for dealing with regional problems like communicable diseases, environmental degradation, and transnational crime. An essential part of the ""Southeast Asia Background Series"", this book seeks to shed some light on what ASEAN is all about.

  • Economics Of The Middle East And North Africa

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Economics Of The Middle East And North Africa

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is a large, complex, and diverse region, which faces a wide range of economic issues. The MENA group includes Algeria, Bahrain, Cyprus, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The purpose of this book is not to provide a country-by-country study, but rather to deal with general economic themes found in Arab MENA and Israel, such as problems associated with growth and structural change; the role of State-intervention in country-specific local markets; labor market imperfections driven by gender bias; technology gaps and endogenous growth; capital market development in a restricted financial model based on religious constraints; savings and investment behaviour in a model of state subsidization and intervention designed to control local development; and the role of the state in constraining private sector activity. Data sources used in this second edition include country-specific data, the World Bank, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The new material in this second edition includes a discussion of the impending and inevitable leadership changes which will occur throughout Arab MENA over the next decades. The evidence to support this evaluation is based on the current lack of transparent markets; the lack of inclusive macro policies, the impact of distortionary micro economic policies across all sectors; and the impact of anti-globalization and xenophobia on innovation. Old chapters are revised with updated data, a discussion of the role of the 'State' and 'Oligarchies' in the economies of most of the MENA countries, an in-depth exploration of the investment in human capital and growth and an identification of the most important binding constraints to economic development in Arab MENA and Israel. This book serves as both a textbook and a summary of the very large literature on MENA. It examines the economic realities of the region and compares them across the MENA economies. It should be stressed that this book is not about the latest political debate on who did what to whom in the Middle East or in North Africa. The focus is on economics, not political economics.

Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Original Sin ? Revising the Revisionist Critique of the 1963 Operation Coldstore in Singapore

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRevisionist" or "alternative" historians have increasingly questioned elements of the Singapore Story — the master narrative of the nation's political and socioeconomic development since its founding by the British in 1819. Much criticism focuses especially on one defining episode of the Story: the internal security dragnet mounted on 2 February 1963 against Communist United Front elements on the island, known to posterity as Operation Coldstore. The revisionists claim that Coldstore was mounted for political rather than security reasons and actually destroyed a legitimate Progressive Left opposition personalized by the charismatic figure of Lim Chin Siong — rather than a dangerous Communist network as the conventional wisdom holds. Relying on both declassified and some previously unseen classified sources, this book challenges revisionist claims, reiterating the historic importance of Coldstore in helping pave the way for Singapore's remarkable journey from Third World status to First in a single generation.

Book SynopsisThis article reports the findings of an online survey conducted in November–December 2021 on Indonesians' experience and perception of fintech tools, focusing on fintech adoption in the Greater Jakarta region, which besides Jakarta, includes Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi. One key finding is that, in the Greater Jakarta region, socio-economic status as measured by income is not a key determinant of fintech adoption. This is likely due to the more developed and mature ICT infrastructure in the Greater Jakarta region, which makes fintech tools readily accessible. However, the kinds of fintech tools that are more likely to be used—M-banking, E-wallet, Online Lending, Investment, Donations, and so on—are influenced by factors such as income, education, gender, age and occupation, suggesting that different fintech tools appeal to different groups in society according to their needs and resources.Psychological factors that are important in the adoption of fintech include having many choices in the needed financial services and feeling in control. While fintech users are concerned about data leaks and fraud, this does not deter them from using fintech. It may be anticipated that with the deepening of ICT infrastructure and public education on the safe use of fintech, fintech usage in Indonesia will continue to spread throughout the country.

Book SynopsisISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute has commissioned a second nationwide survey in Indonesia as a follow-up to the first similar project in 2017 called the Indonesia National Survey Project (INSP). Its broad aim is to enhance understanding of political, economic, and social developments in Indonesia. Its key findings are as follows:The approval rating of President Joko Widodo hovers around 71.8 per cent, at least before the September 2022 announcement on the fuel subsidy cut. His major infrastructure push as his flagship development programme still garners the most positive assessment. However, poverty, unemployment and cost of living remain key flashpoints that the government should be concerned with.

Book SynopsisThis pioneering volume develops an institutionalist analysis of Malaysia's post-colonial economy by exploring the political economy of development and particularly the interface between economics and law. The various authors show that economic policy initiatives in Malaysia have often been accompanied by corresponding legislative and regulatory reforms intended to create an appropriate legal environment, and that economic problems or crises arising from earlier policies have led to major legislative innovations. The volume begins with a survey of Malaysia's colonial legal heritage and significant postcolonial developments, and the relationship between economic change, institutional developments and the law. Colonial land law transformed the rural Malay population, and the authors show that the routine depiction of this sector of the economy as a 'traditional' relic of the pre-colonial era is misleading. With regard to industry, the government changed course after independence, promoting manufacturing investments and technological progress, and forging new industrial relations between the state and trade unions. Drawing on this background the book rejects claims that corporate governance failures caused the financial crisis of the 1990s, and criticizes claims for the superiority of Anglo-American arrangements for corporate governance.

  • Economic Disparity in Rural Myanmar:

Book SynopsisMarket liberalization in Myanmar began in 1988 and had some unanticipated consequences. As farmers began to operate in a context with greatly reduced government control, there was an explosion in the production of green gram, which became extremely popular as an export crop. However, market liberalization in the industry surrounding this new export-oriented crop gave rise to growing economic disparities, largely determined by access to land, capital and credit.Ikuko Okamoto explores these issues through a detailed case study of Thongwa Township, a place east of Yangon (Rangoon) in the major green gram producing region in the country. She shows that farmers responded quickly to policy changes and made maximum use of new opportunities, even in a country where socialist policies had previously limited such opportunities. She also traces the consequences for different social groups in rural Myanmar, and shows that traders benefited the most from the new arrangements, and landless laborers the least. Her research offers important insights into the transition from a socialist to a market-based economy, and local-level responses to market incentives. It also shows that the success or failure of new crops in a peasant economy largerly depends on whether the crop is compatible with the initial resource endowment.

  • The Economic Transition in Myanmar After 1988:

NUS Press The Economic Transition in Myanmar After 1988:

Book SynopsisFor many years Myanmar operated an inward-looking economic system built on import substitution. Ultimately this policy collapsed, leaving a legacy of inefficient state economic enterprises and widespread poverty. Political unrest in 1988 led a newly installed military government to liberalize the economy, opening it to foreign investment and private trade. This move towards a market economy was in line with regional trends, but political instability forced the country to adopt policies that were different from those of neighboring countries. By analyzing economic policy and performance across the economic spectrum, this book presents an overall picture of economic development in Myanmar between 1988 and the early 2000s. The authors synthesize both macro and micro level data to overcome some of the limitations of unreliable national statistics, and show how the government attempted to deal with two key issues. The first was how to reform the inefficient socialistic economic system in conformity with a market economy, and the second was how to develop the agricultural and use the underdeveloped economy to alleviate mass poverty.
