  • Gambling on Development: Why Some Countries Win

C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Gambling on Development: Why Some Countries Win

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the last thirty years, the developing world has undergone tremendous changes. Overall, poverty has fallen, people live longer and healthier lives, and economies have been transformed. And yet many countries have simply missed the boat. Why have some countries prospered, while others have failed? Stefan Dercon argues that the answer lies not in a specific set of policies, but rather in a key 'development bargain', whereby a country's elites shift from protecting their own positions to gambling on a growth-based future. Despite the imperfections of such bargains, China is among the most striking recent success stories, along with Indonesia and more unlikely places, such as Bangladesh, Ghana and Ethiopia. Gambling on Development is about these winning efforts, in contrast to countries stuck in elite bargains leading nowhere. Building on three decades' experience across forty-odd countries, Dercon winds his narrative through Ebola in Sierra Leone, scandals in Malawi, beer factories in the DRC, mobile phone licences in Mozambique, and relief programmes behind enemy lines in South Sudan. Weaving together conversations with prime ministers, civil servants and ordinary people, this is a probing look at how development has been achieved across the world, and how to assist such successes.Trade Review'[An] urgent and important book.' -- Financial Times'A brilliant, well written and important book. Thoroughly recommended.' -- LSE Review of Books'Dercon uses his decades of experience as a well-travelled academician and policy advisor to the British government to provide an experiential look at the widely discussed question of why some countries grow while others lag behind.' -- Choice Reviews‘Dercon’s skilful review of the past 20 years’ most important books is a useful primer for anyone unfamiliar with development studies. His elaborations draw on all of them. He is a development scholar who clearly deserves attention.’ -- Development and Cooperation'This book, written by one of the greatest living development economists, is full of hard-won insights and provocative observations. Dercon's radical modesty, fierce intelligence and deep commitment to describing what actually occurs in the field--in all its hypocrisy, comedy, tragedy, mystery and idealism--distinguishes him in a field too often defined by naive optimism and snake oil solutions.' -- Rory Stewart, former UK Secretary of State for International Development'A challenging, informed and insightful book. Dercon brings expertise, humility and humanity to the vital question of what makes countries poor and what can help them prosper.' -- David Miliband, president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, and a former UK Foreign Secretary'Dercon's message is sobering: there is no silver bullet for development. But any success must rest on the foundation of a bargain among elites, who commit to development and are willing to learn. This should and will be a classic in international development.' -- Yuen Yuen Ang, author of How China Escaped the Poverty Trap and China's Gilded Age'The most important book on international development in a decade. An intensely political story of economic development--one that could only be written by someone with Dercon's unusual mix of scholarship and statesmanship.' -- Christopher Blattman, author of Why We Fight'Why is there persistent divergence in development outcomes around the world? The focus has been on policies, but this insightful book proposes we focus instead on implicit contracts or bargains among political and entrepreneurial elites. Superbly incisive, engaging and timely.' -- Leonard Wantchekon, James Madison Professor of Political Economy and Professor of Politics and International Affairs, Princeton University'An ambitious and uncompromising analysis of the challenge of economic development across the world, from China and India, to Kenya and Ghana. It dissects failures and successes, drawing on diverse methodologies and Dercon's own experience of living and working in all corners of the world. Peppered with data and direct observation, the book is fascinating to read.' -- Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics and Carl Marks Professor of International Studies, Cornell University, former Chief Economist of the World Bank'Solving the problems of poverty in the world requires combining a command of what social scientists know with a mastery of the politics involved in turning that knowledge into practical policy. But scientists don't understand politics, and politicians don't understand science. Stefan Dercon understands both. This book is a unique achievement.' -- James Robinson, University Professor, Harris School of Public Policy, University of Chicago, and co-author of Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty

Book SynopsisWe are all aware of the extreme hunger and poverty that afflict the world''s poor. We hear the facts, see the images on television, buy the T-shirt and are moved as individuals and governments to dig deep into our pockets. Yet what happens to all this aid? Why after 50 years and $2.3 trillion are there still children dying for lack of twelve cents medicine? Why are there so many people still living on less than $1 a day without clean water, food, sanitation, shelter, education or medicine? In The White Man''s Burden William Easterly, acclaimed author and former economist at the World Bank, addresses these twin tragedies head on. While recognising the energy and compassion behind the campaign to make poverty history he argues urgently and powerfully that grand plans and good intentions are a part of the problem not the solution. Giving aid is not enough, we must ensure that it reaches the people who need it most and the only way to make this happens is through accountability and by learning from past experiences. Without claiming to have all the answers, William Easterly chastises the complacent and patronising attitude of the West that attempts to impose solutions from above. In this book, which is by turns angry, moving, irreverent but always rigorous, he calls on each and everyone of us to take responsibility, whether donors, aid workers or ordinary citizens, so that more aid reaches the people it is supposed to help, the mother who cannot feed her children, the little girl who has to collect firewood rather than go to school, the father who cannot work because he has been crippled by war.Trade ReviewCompelling reading...Easterly's book is an important one, and the arguments he raises cannot and should not be ignored. * London Book Review.com *Table of ContentsWHY PLANNERS CANNOT BRING PROSPERITY; ACTING OUT THE BURDEN; THE WHITE MAN'S ARMY; THE FUTURE

  • 2052: A Global Forecast for the Next Forty Years

Chelsea Green Publishing Co 2052: A Global Forecast for the Next Forty Years

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWith clarity, conscience, and courage, global-systems pioneer Jorgen Randers and his distinguished contributors map the forces that will shape the next four decades. Forty years ago, The Limits to Growth study addressed the grand question of how humans would adapt to the physical limitations of planet Earth. It predicted that during the first half of the 21st century the ongoing growth in the human ecological footprint would stop-either through catastrophic "overshoot and collapse"-or through well-managed "peak and decline." So, where are we now? And what does our future look like? In the book 2052, Jorgen Randers, one of the coauthors of Limits to Growth, issues a progress report and makes a forecast for the next forty years. To do this, he asked dozens of experts to weigh in with their best predictions on how our economies, energy supplies, natural resources, climate, food, fisheries, militaries, political divisions, cities, psyches, and more will take shape in the coming decades. He then synthesized those scenarios into a global forecast of life as we will most likely know it in the years ahead. The good news: we will see impressive advances in resource efficiency, and an increasing focus on human well-being rather than on per capita income growth. But this change might not come as we expect. Future growth in population and GDP, for instance, will be constrained in surprising ways-by rapid fertility decline as result of increased urbanization, productivity decline as a result of social unrest, and continuing poverty among the poorest 2 billion world citizens. Runaway global warming, too, is likely. So, how do we prepare for the years ahead? With heart, fact, and wisdom, Randers guides us along a realistic path into the future and discusses what readers can do to ensure a better life for themselves and their children during the increasing turmoil of the next forty years.Trade ReviewChoice- In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Limits to Growth (CH, Nov'73), Randers (climate strategy, BI Norwegian Business School) forecasts changes in population, consumption, energy use, emissions, quality of life, and climate over the next 40 years. As one of the original contributors to Limits to Growth, the author's current forecast is based on the ‘overshoot and collapse’ scenario. Regional scenarios highlight the distribution of benefits and costs from climate change across the globe, underscoring the distinct consequences on the developed and developing world. The author emphasizes that shortsighted decision making associated with democracy is ill suited to handle climate change, given its long-term outcomes. A novel feature of this work is the inclusion of predictions from more than two dozen experts working in ecology, political science, industry, and economics. These individual contributions are woven into the larger story to provide comparison with the author's predictions. Overall, this work is accessible to a general audience; however, Randers's limited analysis and justification of model assumption restrict the usefulness of this book as a stand-alone text. It could be useful in conjunction with some formal texts on globalization, economics, and the environment. Summing Up: Optional. General readers and undergraduate students.Publishers Weekly- Randers has made it his life's work to caution the world about the dangers of unfettered expansion, and to seek out solutions to current and prospective problems. Beginning with The Limits to Growth in 1972, he has explored possible scenarios for our social, economic, and environmental future. In this global study, Randers presents a forecast for the next 40 years, supported by ‘statistical data, anecdotal stories, impressions from traveling the world…formal analyses of particular developments,’ and short essays by a variety of experts. While he discusses his own opinions—such as his belief that the world economy must shift its focus from ‘fossil-fuelled economic growth’ to ‘sustainable well-being’ — the enormous amount of information and speculation here function additionally as an excellent springboard for a timely discourse. And open and informed conversation seems crucial to Randers's project—indeed, he posits that unchecked climate change is not a technological problem, but a political one. Randers and his colleagues present a portrait of the future that is radically different from today, but not entirely bleak: while he believes that the worst of his predictions are possible, he humbly asks his readers to ‘help make my forecast wrong.’"This thoughtful and thought-provoking book will be inspiring, and challenging, for all who really care about our common future."--Gro Harlem Brundtland, former prime minister of Norway; leader, World Commission on Environment and Development"A sober, cogent, and courageous assessment of a future not dictated by fate, or economics, or limits to technology, but by the most egregious leadership failure in history. But there is still time to change course...just enough time and no more."--David W. Orr, Oberlin College, author of Down to the Wire: Confronting Climate Collapse"Read 2052 and get the views of a great futurist-one with a fine track record of being right."--Paul R. Ehrlich, author of The Dominant Animal "This is an extraordinary and profoundly important book. Randers' mastery of many fields is impressive, and he presents his 'best guess' future with clarity and force. As a result, he provides a challenging template against which we can judge our own expectations for mid-century."--James Gustave Speth, author of America the Possible"An unconventional and lucid explanation of the likely macroeconomic developments of the world over the next forty years."--Lord Nicholas Stern, author, The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change; chair, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics "With clarity, conscience, and courage, global-systems pioneer Jorgen Randers and his distinguished contributors map the forces that will shape the next four decades. Their sobering but far from despairing insights will encourage all who strive in applied hope to build a society worthy of nature's legacy and humans' potential."--Amory B. Lovins, chairman and chief scientist, Rocky Mountain Institute; senior author, Reinventing Fire; coauthor, Natural Capitalism "It's too late to wonder how different and refreshingly breathable the world would be if everyone had listened hard to Jorgen Randers 40 years ago. The question now is if we'll heed him this time. Here's our chance. Please seize it, everyone."--Alan Weisman, author of The World Without Us and Gaviotas Table of ContentsPreface: what will the future bring Part 1: Background. After decades of work on the ground in Africa, Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, bestselling author Greg Mills seeks to provide answers in Rich State, Poor State. After decades of work on the ground in Africa, Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, bestselling author Greg Mills seeks to provide answers in Rich State, Poor State. On each continent he traverses, Mills interrogates the how and why. How did Botswana go from being one of the least-developed and poorest nations at independence to enjoying the highest rate of per capita growth of any country in the world? Why has South Africa failed to attain similar heights? How did the Baltic states achieve reforms that have positioned them among the best-performing economies in Europe? How did Vietnam overcome a traumatic past in favour of a rapid and positive development transformation? Why is Mexico the only large developing economy that competes with China in manufacturing? Drawing from interviews with current and former presidents, prime ministers and key government officials across the globe, as well as research from leading institutions to enrich his fieldwork, Mills contrasts the successes and the failures, and in so doing, seeks to determine a path for the next generation of leaders.Insightful and inspiring, Rich State, Poor State shows that with better choices, the right policies and the will to implement them, it is entirely possible to travel the road from poverty to prosperity.

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis immensely stimulating book enriches our understanding of comparative and international political economy with new perspectives drawn from post-Keynesian economics about how and why growth models vary across countries and time. Bringing macroeconomics back into the center of the study of comparative capitalism, the authors skillfully weave economics and politics together to yield a distinctive view of the challenges facing the contemporary world. This is an illuminating volume that all political economists will want to read. * Peter A. Hall, Krupp Foundation Professor of European Studies, Harvard University *What happens when growth slows down? This excellent book contributes to a growing research agenda on economic growth, ranging from heterodox economics and international political economy to political science. At the core are institutional differences between national growth regimes that are interconnected in the global economy. Understanding those institutions and dynamics will allow us to better guide the transition from fossil-fuelled growth towards decarbonization. * Anke Hassel, Professor of Public Policy, Hertie School *Every once in a while, a book comes along that genuinely takes the scholarly and analytical debates in a field forwards. This impressively substantial tome is just such a volume, enriching comparative capitalisms analysis in bringing together an array of the world's leading political economists to explore growth models and capitalist restructuring in many parts of the globe. This will become a landmark volume that students and scholars of the political economy interested in the politics of capitalist growth in all parts of the globe will need to read. * Ben Clift, Professor of Political Economy, University of Warwick *Table of ContentsList of Contributors Introduction: Rethinking Comparative Capitalism Lucio Baccaro, Mark Blyth and Jonas Pontusson Part 1: Theoretical Perspectives Chapter 1: Growth Models and Post Keynesian Macroeconomics Engelbert Stockhammer and Özlem Onaran Chapter 2: From Fordism to Franchise: Intellectual property and growth models in the Knowledge Economy Herman Mark Schwartz Chapter 3: Four Galtons and a Minsky: Growth Models from an IPE Perspective Herman Mark Schwartz and Mark Blyth Part 2: Growth Models at Scale Chapter 4: The Political Economy of the Eurozone's Post-Crisis Growth Model Alison Johnston and Matthias Matthijs Chapter 5: China's Growth Models in Comparative and International Perspective Yeling Tan and James Conran Chapter 6: The Politics of Growth Model Switching: Why Latin America Tries, and Fails, to Abandon Commodity-Driven Growth Jazmin Sierra Chapter 7: The FDI-led Growth Models of the East-Central and South-Eastern European Periphery Cornel Ban and Dragos Adascalitei Part 3: Country Case Studies Chapter 8: Credit and Consumption-Led Growth Models in the United States and United Kingdom Alexander Reisenbichler and Andreas Wiedemann Chapter 9: The Political-Economic Foundations of Export-led Growth: An Analysis of the German Case Lucio Baccaro and Martin Höpner Chapter 10: Rebalancing Balanced Growth: The Evolution of the Swedish Growth Model since the mid- 1990s Lennart Erixon and Jonas Pontusson Chapter 11: Growth and Stagnation in Southern Europe: The Italian and Spanish Growth Models Compared Lucio Baccaro and Fabio Bulfone Chapter 12: Global Capital and National Growth Models: The Cases of Ireland and Latvia Dorothee Bohle and Aidan Regan Part 4: Policies and Politics Chapter 13: Financialization and Growth Regimes Cornel Ban and Oddny Helgadóttir Chapter 14: Political Parties and Growth Models Jonathan Hopkin and Dustin Voss Chapter 15: Growth Models Under Austerity Evelyne Hübscher and Thomas Sattler Chapter 16: Welfare States and Growth Models: Accumulation and Legitimation Julia Lynch and Sara Watson Chapter 17: Green Growth Models Jonas Nahm Index

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Co-Winner of the 2018 Allan Sharlin Memorial Award, Social Science History Association""Finalist for the 2017 Hayek Prize, The Manhattan Institute""Honorable Mention for the 2017 PROSE Award in European and World History, Association of American Publishers""One of MIT Technology Review’s Best Books of 2016""Fascinating.... [Mokyr] reminds us that the skirmishing of philosophers and their ideas, the preoccupation of popular historians, is in many ways a sideshow—that the revolution that gave Europe dominance was, above all, scientific, and that the scientific revolution was, above all, an artisanal revolution."---Adam Gopnik, New Yorker"A fine book. . . . One of our country's great economic historians has helped us better understand the greatest transformation in human welfare our planet has ever seen."---Richard Vedder, Wall Street Journal"Wide-ranging and erudite. . . . Mokyr offers a useful corrective to excessively deterministic and materialistic treatments of economic history, emphasizing ideas—the West, he argues, had a uniquely positive view about subjugating nature to human control—and individual agency in shaping broad socioeconomic shifts." * Publishers Weekly *"Ultimately, without the impetus of science, economic growth would have fizzled out after 1815. A Culture of Growth is certainly making me rethink."---Brad DeLong, Nature"A Culture of Growth is a brilliant book. You should buy it and even read it. It’s long, but consistently interesting, even witty."---Deirdre McCloskey, Prospect"In pointing to growth-boosting factors that go beyond either the state or the market, Mokyr's book is very welcome."---Victoria Bateman, Times Higher Education"Mokyr . . . dives into the mystery of how the world went from being poor to being so rich in just a few centuries. . . . Drawing on centuries of philosophy and scientific advancements, Mokyr argues that there's a reason the Industrial Revolution occurred in Europe and not, for example, in China, which had in previous centuries shown signs of more scientific advancement: Europe developed a unique culture of competitive scientific and intellectual advancement that was unprecedented and not at all predestined."---Ana Swanson, WashingtonPost.com's Wonkblog"The sheer elegance of Mr. Mokyr's theory . . . has much to commend it. And it is refreshing that an economist is taking seriously the idea that ideas and culture make a difference to economic growth." * The Economist *"Mokyr has written a book to read slowly and chew over thoroughly. . . . He is a wonderfully well-read lucid and continuously interesting guide to a vast literature and invariably thought provoking."---Alan Ryan, Literary Review"Someone needed to write a book like this, and there could have been no better author to do so than Mokyr."---Peer Vries, Foreign Affairs"Economic historian Joel Mokyr has written a capstone work on the dynamics of the industrial revolution."---Arnold Kling, Econlib"It is not often that a book leaves me gasping in admiration for the breadth and depth of an author's reading and knowledge, but this one did."---Ted Nield, Geoscientist Online"This book is the latest example of Mokyr's ability to explicate complex issues, illustrating his big-picture thesis with a myriad of fascinating details. He writes with clarity--enjoyable for the general reader as well as for the specialist in economic history. A Culture of Growth is a must-read for anyone interested in how Western society got where it is today and what this implies for the spread of technology in the global economy of the future." * Finance & Development *"A Culture of Growth is a book of immense importance for us Indians especially when we are getting comfortable, forever playing victim to the depredations of British imperialism instead of wholeheartedly focusing on beating the West at its game as the Chinese are doing. . . . Well worth tackling."---Uday Balakrishnan, Hindu Business Line"A Culture of Growth is an insightful quest into the economic history of the last five centuries. Mokyr’s historical laboratory is early modern Europe, when a small mass of highly skilled artisans, entrepreneurs, financiers and merchants laid the roots of what was to become the Industrial Revolution." * Progressive Post *"One has to admire the depth of knowledge and the subtlety of Mokyr’s argument. . . . For serious students of the Enlightenment itself, Mokyr’s magnum opus will be required reading for a long time to come."---Nicholas Crafts, History Today"A fresh historical treatment."---Darcy Allen, IPA Review"This is a tour d'horizon of an exciting new area of inquiry, which offers important insights into the future of our civilization and the evolution of an increasingly technical world. Mokyr's book is so rich and stimulating that no brief review can do it justice. So, dear reader, read the book!"---Wolfgang Kasper, Policy"The book represents recognition that culture has finally arrived as an important and legitimate concept in discussions of economic growth. In this endeavor, the book is an important landmark. . . . Students and scholars working in the field will benefit from the intelligent and rich discussion provided in A Culture of Growth."---Mark Koyama, Independent Review"What stands out from Mokyr’s approach is the highly contingent character of the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution. They happened because a lot ofdifferent things happened to fall into place; small deviations in the course of events could have given us an entirely different world of technological and economic power."---Diane Coyle, Financial Times"After reading this book, chances are that you won’t look at the economic, social, and political world in quite the same way as before."---Pierre Lemieux, Regulation"An important body of work. It contains ideas, propositions, historical facts, biographies of influential scholars, writersand scientists, and it is a confirmation of the author's expertise of a broad range of topics in the economics of culture and comparative economic history of an emerging Europe and China."---Dr Meltem Ince-Yenilmez, Rest Journal

Nondisruptive creation is a pathbreaking new concept that shows leaders and innovators how business can be a force for good. This book will become a business classic." — Jake Cohen, Senior Associate Dean at the MIT Sloan School of Management"Few books are fascinating and theoretically important. Beyond Disruption is. Introducing a big new idea—Nondisruptive Creation—Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne once again have written an agenda-setting book. Reflecting their deep insight and decades of research, Beyond Disruption offers evidence that economies, industries, and companies can grow without leaving a wake of destruction in their path. A must-read for executives, policy makers and students alike." — Craig Hatkoff, Co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, Co-founder of the Disruptor Awards"Clay Christensen's seminal book, The Innovator's Dilemma, identifies the complacency of many major companies, too entrenched in their successful existing business models, that got disrupted from the low end by startup innovators who ate their lunch! Now, Chan Kim & Renée Mauborgne take the contrasting view and brilliantly state the case for nondisruptive creation focusing not on existing businesses, but the opportunities presented by solving a brand new set of challenges whether it be space, climate change, or multiple areas not addressed by existing industries. The book offers an enlightened strategy for addressing the unmet needs of the 21st century which will lead imaginative thinkers to approach business with a whole new perspective." — Alan Patricof, Founder and Chairman of Primetime Partners, Chairman Emeritus of Greycroft LLC and Founder of Apax Partners"If you think disruption is important for our business and economy, you must read this book. Beyond Disruption by Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne tells the missing half of the story that complements disruption. It offers an alternative approach to market-creating innovation through which economic growth can be achieved without destroying existing companies or jobs. It shows how innovation, growth, and society can move in lockstep. Beyond Disruption will be the innovation playbook for decades to come." — Warren Tuttle, a board member of the United States Intellectual Property Alliance"What Africa needs is a new generation of visionary leaders who understand innovation and how to transform the continent into a twenty-first century economic juggernaut. Beyond Disruption will serve as a blueprint and an indispensable tool for the next one hundred Mandela's who can integrate our many cultures and rich traditions with the challenges and opportunities of modernity." — Ndaba Mandela, Founder of the Mandela Institute for Humanity, author of Going to the Mountain: Life Lessons from My Grandfather, Nelson Mandela"Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne have tapped into a new global zeitgeist, reflecting a cultural moment as people around the world are searching for a new approach where economic and social good can move in lockstep. Reflecting their deep insight and decades of research, Beyond Disruption offers proof that economies, industries, and companies can grow, without leaving a wake of destruction in their path." — Elcin Barker Ergun, Chief Executive Officer of Menarini Group, a Top 50 Global Pharma Company"Beyond Disruption speaks to a whole new generation of leaders and innovators who believe that business can be a force for good. At last, a book that gives us the tools for creating economic and social value at the same time, lifting up societies through new jobs and game-changing growth opportunities for all. Introducing a big new idea—Nondisruptive Creation—Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne once again have written an agenda-setting book." — Heung Soo Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Global Strategy Office of Hyundai Motor Group

  • Healthy Buildings

    Harvard University Press Healthy Buildings

Book SynopsisBuildings can make us sick or keep us well. Diseases and toxins course through indoor spaces, making us ill. Meanwhile, better air quality and light levels improve productivity. At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has us focused more than ever on indoor air quality, Healthy Buildings shows how much we have to gain from human-centered design.Trade ReviewIf we’ve learned anything from the coronavirus pandemic, it’s that clean indoor air is essential to healthy living. But it’s not just about getting rid of viral particles. Dr. Allen, director of the Healthy Buildings program at Harvard, has led research showing that poor indoor air quality dulls your brain, dampening creativity and cognitive function…This book is a call to action for every developer, building owner, shareholder, chief executive, manager, teacher, worker and parent to start demanding healthy buildings with cleaner indoor air. -- Tara Parker-Pope * New York Times *This exposé of the widespread under-ventilation and pollution inside modern buildings arrived just as shared indoor space became truly deadly. Though there’s now light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, these insights and guidelines for improving indoor air quality should play a huge role in post-pandemic reforms. * Fortune *This book should be essential reading for all who commission, design, manage, and use buildings—indeed anyone who is interested in a healthy environment. -- Norman FosterThe manual for keeping people safe indoors. * Boston Globe *Healthy Buildings is both hugely important and a great read. By the end it not only completely persuaded me that improving the health of our buildings is a fabulous economic opportunity and something that could change the lives of millions of people—it gave me a very good sense of where to start. Highly recommended. -- Rebecca Henderson, John and Natty McArthur University Professor, Harvard UniversityAllen and Macomber want to establish national standards, and they make a series of precise and persuasive recommendations for everything from insulation and window shades to water filters and vacuum cleaners. -- Jill Lepore * New Yorker *We’ve known for years that our indoor environments, from offices to hospitals, can have a dramatic affect on our health, functioning, and mental wellbeing, and 2020 has proven the point…[Allen and Macomber] share insider tips and show how tracking what they call ‘health performance indicators’ with smart technology can boost a company’s performance and create economic value. A post-COVID handbook. -- Laura Raskin * AIA New York *A lucid and passionate outline of why now is the time to acknowledge the huge and unrealized potential for buildings to make a positive contribution to the health and performance of their inhabitants, the economy, society and the planet. In this sense, this is a very different and innovative book compared with other similarly themed ones…This is a powerful and enjoyable book, which will appeal to those with an interest in business and built environment alike…Both a relatable and authoritative read. -- Marcella Ucci * Buildings & Cities *[Allen and Macomber] tread new ground, transitioning from the century-old building code movement, which focuses on safety; to the decades-old green building movement, which focuses on energy, waste, and water savings; to the evolving healthy building movement, which focuses on people and their health, cognitive abilities, productivity, and well-being…This book is innovative, timely, and forward-looking. -- Katrin B. Anacker * Journal of Urban Affairs *Allen and Macomber provide the key actions needed to make sure ‘sick buildings are a thing of the past.’ It’s a fascinating read for anyone interested in keeping our society healthy and well, and a near-mandatory one for anyone who works in the field. * Architect Magazine *Healthy Buildings makes a great contribution by urging us to shift to a ‘health-first’ mindset in relation to our built environment. Its unique insights help close the knowledge gap around healthy buildings, reveal their important role in global sustainability, and provide practical guidance on the main factors we should all be on the lookout for in our homes, offices, and schools. -- Cristina Gamboa, CEO of the World Green Building CouncilThe engaging conversational style of this comprehensive book makes it an ideal read for any busy building owner or executive who wants to learn about the new science of healthy buildings and to discover how following healthy building strategies may impact their (and society’s) bottom line. -- Christoph Reinhart, Director of MIT’s Building Technology Program and Head of the Sustainable Design LabSustainability and health can no longer exist in separate domains. Healthy Buildings bridges the divide. Allen and Macomber link health science and business science for a new way to think about buildings. -- John Mandyck, CEO of Urban Green CouncilIndoor air quality directly impacts our lungs, and we have a responsibility to remove indoor air pollutants that are linked to asthma, lung cancer, and other serious diseases. Healthy Buildings lays out the simple steps we can all take to improve our health. -- Harold Wimmer, National President and CEO of the American Lung AssociationIn this new era of ESG responsibility, every CEO must consider our built environment to fully meet stakeholder expectations. Book SynopsisThis Handbook provides an authoritative in-depth understanding of China's progression and future global position from over sixty leading scholars on China, who explain the development of China's innovation capabilities, the causes and their views about the future direction. Xiaolan Fu, Jin Chen, and Bruce McKern bring together international scholars and experts to explain how China managed, in a very short period of time, to become the world's second-largest economyand a leader in many fields of innovation.Trade ReviewChina has gone from a relatively poor and isolated economy with a defective economic model to a powerhouse in a matter of four decades. This Handbook will help readers understand how that happened. In applying multiple lenses to understanding this complex journey, one learns about the role of the state and the private sectors, the key mindsets and policy frameworks, and China's experimental approach to finding pathways to progress in the absence of clear roadmaps. Readers will be left with little doubt that the China case is important, not only for its scale, but for real innovation in finding ways to accelerate innovation processes. As the world faces important challenges, in which accelerated innovation is a critical capability, the China experience covered in this volume holds important lessons for a wide range of developed and emerging economies. * Michael Spence, Nobel Laureate and William R. Book SynopsisNo one wants to live in poverty. Few people would want others to do so. Yet, millions of people worldwide live in poverty. According to the World Bank, over 700 million people lived on less than US $2 a day in 2013. Why is that? What has been done about it in the past? And what is being done about it now?In this Very Short Introduction Philip N. Jefferson explores how the answers to these questions lie in the social, political, economic, educational, and technological processes that impact all of us throughout our lives. The degree of vulnerability is all that differentiates us. He shows how a person''s level of vulnerability to adverse changes in their life is very much dependent on the circumstances of their birth, including where their family lived, the schools they attended, whether it was peacetime or wartime, whether they had access to clean water, and whether they are male or female. Arguing that whilst poverty is ancient and enduring, the conversation about it is always new and evolving, Jefferson looks at the history of poverty, and the practical and analytical efforts we have made to eradicate it, and the prospects for further poverty alleviation in the future.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. This big book gets us to think about all this systematically, rigorously, and powerfully. * Danny Quah is Li Ka Shing Professor in Economics at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore *This outstanding book is essential reading for students of international development, policy-makers, and anyone thinking about the human condition in our interdependent, globalised world. It asks the big questions. Why in an era of extraordinary wealth and scientific progress, do poverty and extreme deprivation continue to blight so many lives? How should we express human solidarity through international cooperation and multilateralism? As the climate crisis intensifies, ecological stress worsens, and inequality reaches ever more extreme proportions, is it time to rethink what we mean by 'development' and 'progress'? The author's combined academic rigour with readability and, critically practical reflections on how change happens. * Kevin Watkins, Chief Executive, Save the Children UK *This new edition of Poverty and Development marks a welcome return of one of the most interesting collection for teaching development. Lucid and comprehensive, the text covers the gamut of topics needed to teach international development, from the historical transformation of the Global South under the impact of European expansion, through the rival models of development propagated during the global Cold war, to the Great Transformation wrought by industrialisation of China and E. Asia. In addition, the book covers key issues in contemporary development, including new chapters on climate change, digital technologies, as well as on the changing nature of conflict. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book illustrates clearly how policies in both North and South impact the welfare of the vast majority of humanity. * Jocelyn DeJong, Professor and Associate Dean, and Tariq Tell, Assistant Professor, American University of Beirut, Lebanon *Poverty and Development remains a foundational volume in understanding the intricacies between poverty and development in developing regions. For those of us interested in Public Policy, Governance and Development in Africa, this book provides critical points of reference for understanding pertinent policy, and governance domains in the development paradigm. Book SynopsisSocial entrepreneurs are change makers that aim to solve societyâs unsolved problems. Not surprisingly, social entrepreneurship has thus created high expectations. To better understand the potential as well as the limitations of social entrepreneurship, however, a more nuanced approach is needed in two ways. First, social entrepreneurship is a multi-level phenomenon. It spans macro-level questions as well as meso-level questions and, finally, micro-level questions. If we really want to understand social entrepreneurship, we need to bring together all three levels of analysis and see how they are connected. Second, while social entrepreneurship can certainly produce socially desirable outcomes, we also need a critical perspective to capture potential undesirable effects that social entrepreneurship can cause, often unintendedly, in society, in markets, in organizations, and for individuals. To this end, an ethical perspective can help complement the positiTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction – Why Social Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics?Part I: Social Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics – The Foundations Chapter 2: What is Social Entrepreneurship (not)? Book SynopsisThe main contribution of this book lies in its focus on real alternatives in future population growth. At some time-taken as 1956 in India for this case study-a low-income country may have the option of effectively promoting the reduction of fertility, or (by inaction) of permitting fertility to remain at high levels. This book clearly shows the nature and extent of the economic gains resulting from fertility reduction. Since most low-income areas are destined for rapid population growth even with substantial fertility declines, the emphasis is placed between moderately rapid and very rapid growth. The extensive quantitative population projections show the importance of the growth rate itself and of changes in age distribution in addition to population size. The results for India have direct implications for all low-income, primarily agrarian areas entering a program of economic development.Originally published in 1958.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latTable of Contents*Frontmatter, pg. i*Foreword, pg. v*Preface, pg. vii*Contents, pg. xiii*Tables, pg. xv*Charts, pg. xx*I. Book SynopsisInequality is not just about the size of our wallets. It is a socio-cultural order which, for most of us, reduces our capabilities to function as human beings, our health, our dignity, our sense of self, as well as our resources to act and participate in the world.Trade Review"Covering the world, Göran Therborn shows how devastating are his three types of inequality (vital, existential and resource) and their mechanisms of reproduction (distanciation, exclusion and exploitation). Lucid, persuasive and learned The Killing Fields of Inequality is a must-read for those concerned about the most pressing topic of our time." Michael Burawoy, University of California, Berkeley "A great book. With a light touch, it provides a brief but comprehensive survey of all the main dimensions of inequality. Written with insight, commitment to social justice, and ability to see what matters, it becomes a book about social progress itself. It ends with a perceptive discussion of the next steps towards a more egalitarian future." Richard Wilkinson, University of Nottingham"[A]lways favouring a comparative and global perspective, Therborn's book presents us with a wide and insightful examination of the various dimensions of inequality in a rare combination of theoretical developments, historical substantiation, and empirical evidence […and…] compelling answers to a few of the most inescapable questions about inequalities."Análise SocialTable of ContentsFigures page vi Tables vii Introduction 1 I. Book SynopsisEconomists have debated Latin America's economic strategies at two moments since the second world war. The first debate, often characterized as between monetarists and structuralists, flourished from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. It focused on the strengths and weaknesses of a strategy of import-substituting industrialization (ISI). The second debate has unfolded since the early 1980s. It focuses on policies of economic stabilization to control inflation, and on exchange rates, trade regimes and, especially, a strategic orientation toward reliance upon markets in order to foster economic growth. This is collection of essays around the strategies and policies adopted in Latin America.Table of ContentsIntroduction, The Fundamentals of Economic Progress in Underdeveloped Countries: Using the Resources at Hand More Effectively, International Trade and Payments in an Era of Coexistence: Commercial Policy in the Underdeveloped Countries, A Theory of Inflation and Growth in Under-Developed Economies Based on the Experience of Latin America, Monetarists, Structuralists, and Import-Substituting Industrialization: A Critical Appraisal, Import Substitution, Foreign Investment, and International Disequilibrium in Brazil, The Political Economy of Import-Substituting Industrialization in Latin America, Import Substitution and Industrialization in Latin America: Experiences and Interpretations, The Central American Model of Growth: Crisis for Whom?, Economic Development Over the Long Run—Central America Since 1920, Good-bye Financial Repression, Hello Financial Crash, Stabilization with Liberalization: An Evaluation of Ten Years of Chile’s Experiment with Free-Market Policies, 1973-1983, High Inflation, Heterodox Stabilization, and Fiscal Policy, Macroeconomic Populism, The Latin American State, The State and Industrial Strategy, Bolivia: Hyperinflation, Stabilisation, and Beyond, The Case for Trade Liberalization in Developing Countries, Acknowledgments

Book SynopsisThe Sustainable Development Goals are global objectives set by the UN. They cover fundamental issues in development such as poverty, education, economic growth, and climate. Despite growing data across policy dimensions, popular statistical approaches offer limited solutions as these datasets are not big or detailed enough to meet their technical requirements. Complexity Economics and Sustainable Development provides a novel framework to handle these challenging features, suggesting that complexity science, agent-based modelling, and computational social science can overcome these limitations. Building on interdisciplinary socioeconomic theory, it provides a new framework to quantify the link between public expenditure and development while accounting for complex interdependencies and public governance. Accompanied by comprehensive data of worldwide development indicators and open-source code, it provides a detailed construction of the analytic toolkit, familiarising readers with a diverse set of empirical applications and drawing policy implications that are insightful to a diverse readership.Trade Review'The book by Omar Guerrero and Gonzalo Castañeda is a path-breaking contribution that, through a careful validation procedure of the complexity applied to sustainable development, demonstrates the logical and empirical superiority of the complex economy over the mainstream method, tight in the straitjacket of equilibrium. Furthermore, it offers convincing evidence of the need for economic policy intervention in sustainable development.' Mauro Gallegati, Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy'The opportunities afforded by agent-based modelling for informing the development, appraisal, and evaluation of public policies at global and national scales have becoming increasingly evident over the last decade. But often research in this area has been small-scale, not well connected with policymakers, and methodologically unsophisticated. This book is different. It shows in detail the value of modelling using a generative causation approach, develops a powerful modelling framework, and applies it to a range of important case studies to evaluate the effectiveness of allocating budgets to achieve development and sustainability goals, both cross-nationally and at the level of individual countries. It is an excellent example of what policy modelling can achieve.' Nigel Gilbert, Professor of Sociology, Centre for Research in Social Simulation, University of Surrey, UK'This important book makes excellent contributions on various levels. It introduces readers to sustainable development from a complexity perspective, and provides a masterclass on agent-based modelling and computational economics. Supported by a wealth of empirical data and case studies, the authors address numerous highly relevant topics in sustainability. The book is rich with original insights and policy recommendations. Book SynopsisBusiness and Development Studies: Issues and Perspectives provides a comprehensive collection of cutting-edge theoretical and empirical contributions to the emerging field of business and development studies.Compared to more traditional business-school accounts of business in developing countries which focus on the challenges and opportunities of doing business in developing countries, this anthology explores whether, how, and under what conditions business contributes to the achievement of economic, social, and environmental goals in developing countries. The book consolidates the current status of academic work on business and development, identifies state of the art in relation to this academic field, and establishes a future research agenda for business and development studies' as an emerging academic discipline within the social sciences. The book will be of interest to researchers and students, including economists, geographers, sociolTrade Review"There is a vast academic literature on global value chains in developing countries and an equally vast literature on corporate social responsibility. However, there is painfully little research that links together the two academic fields. The book edited by Lund-Thompson, Hansen, and Lindgreen makes a welcome contribution to this neglected but important area of academic research." — Peter Nolan, Chonghua Professor of Chinese Development (Emeritus), University of Cambridge, Director, China Centre, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK"These experienced and informed editors have brought together a rich but diverse set of chapters that look at many dimensions of business and development. The chapters reflect how the topic of development in the Global South has itself become more complex. The dimensions explore the well established such as global value chains, but extend to less well understood topics such social entrepreneuring. What is common and holds the collection together is the concern about the relationships between business and global development. For those of us who believe that we cannot understand development as simply an economic phenomenon, the chapters relate well to understanding business as socially and culturally embedded. The book brings together a range of current, up to date and relevant views, knowledge and expertise about what’s happening and how we can begin to better understand what’s going on in the South. If nothing else, the diversity of the chapters demonstrates the importance of understanding how business shapes development." — Alistair R. Anderson, Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship, Lancaster University Management School, UK"The book provides a much needed contribution to fill a forgotten gap in the business management field. Even though businesses heavily impact development processes, and vice-versa, there are very few scholars in business management community who serious study the links between business and development studies. The book brings refreshing contributions and analyses of the different connections between business and development from a worldwide group of scholars." — Professor Jose A. Puppim de Oliveira, Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) & São Paulo School of Management (EAESP), Brazil"In a world with increasing challenges and a rising humanitarian funding gap, there is a strong need for exploring new models, beyond classic corporate social responsibility, where companies and humanitarian/development actors create shared value and impact. Here, this important book and the broad research it captures will inspire us and move the debate forward." — Christian Friis Bach, Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council (Dansk Røde Kors), former Minister of Development Cooperation, Denmark, and former Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe"At the Danish investment fund IFU, we are operating in the interface between business and development on a daily basis, assisting businesses with their investments in developing countries while at the same time contributing to economic and social development. The book Business and Development Studies: Issues and Perspectives edited by Thomsen, Hansen, and Lindgreen is a highly timely exploration of the potential of private enterprise in development and it will no doubt be read with great interest by development and business practitioners working in this field". — Torben Huss, CEO, IFU, Investment Fund for Developing Countries, Denmark"The 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals have assigned the private sector a pivotal role towards solving some of the most pressing global development problems. In the anthology Business and Development Studies: Issues and Perspectives (edited by Peter Lund-Thomson, Michael W. Hansen, and Adam Lindgreen), a diverse group of eminent scholars and emerging academics sets out to scrutinise whether businesses can indeed contribute to inclusive and sustainable development efforts or remain part of the deeply entrenched problems of inequality, poverty and injustice in the Global South. The 19 chapters make important and novel contributions from both empirical and theoretical angles. They provide in-depth and critical analyses of the potential and trade-offs of business operations towards achieving various economic, social and ecological goals in the Global South. The editors have also developed innovative ideas for future theoretical and methodological pathways in business and development studies. This collection is a must-read for researchers, students, development practitioners and policy makers who work at the interface of global business and international development and are interested in the historical trajectories and contemporary challenges of involving the private sector in global development agendas." — Andreas Neef, Professor in Development Studies, University of Auckland, New Zealand"The demise of both statist development strategies and extreme forms of market fundamentalism has created the space for a more nuanced view of the potential contribution and associated limitations of the private sector as an agent of development. This book is a pioneering attempt to bring together the different strands of research that address the role of business in development. It goes beyond a narrow focus on Corporate Social Responsibility and a preoccupation with the 'business case' that tends to characterize the international business literature. The contributors bring a wealth of theoretical and empirical insights from their engagement with development issues often based on extensive fieldwork in the Global South. It will be essential reading for students and others interested in the opportunities and problems that business involvement in development present." — Professor Rhys Jenkins, Director MA in Globalization, Business and Sustainable Development, School of International Development, University of East Anglia, UK"This important collection provides a rich body of conceptual and empirical chapters that cover a breadth of issues on business and development studies. It underlines need to understand better the interactions between state, business and society in the development process, and to consider this both as a critical research agenda and a discipline in its own right." — Khalid Nadvi, Professor of International Development, Global Development Institute, School of Environment, Education and Development, University of Manchester, UK"All in all, an engaging volume that may prove to be the foundation for a new business discipline" --S. Book SynopsisMany emerging economies are on the front line of the devastating impacts of global warming such as desertification and extreme weather events, but, for historical and political reasons, they follow ambitious growth targets with seemingly little concern for climate change and environmental degradation. Focusing on the case of Turkey, this book investigates the economic impacts of possible climate change policies to help meet the required mitigation targets and transition to a low carbon economy. In order to reach net-zero targets by 2050 in compliance with the Paris Agreement, Turkey must introduce policies that promote low carbon investments, green jobs and low carbon employment more broadly. This book explores the empirical evidence on the effectiveness of a carbon pricing mechanism by developing an econometric vector autoregression (VAR) model to analyse key data sets. Book SynopsisUnderstanding the Policymaking Process in Developing Countries provides a uniquely comprehensive and practical framework for development practitioners, policymakers, activists, and students to diagnose and improve policy processes in developing countries across a wide range of issues. Based on the classic policy sciences approach, the book offers over 100 diagnostic indicators keyed to identify problems of policy processes, policy content, bureaucratic behavior, stakeholder behavior, and national-subnational interactions. This multi-disciplinary framework is applied to a host of policy problems that particularly plague countries experiencing the ''under-development syndrome'', including aborted programs and projects, policy impasses, distorted implementation, unnecessary harm and conflict, and shortsighted initiatives. These points are illustrated through cases from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Based on the developing countries'' distinctive challenges, the book also offers recommeTrade Review'This is an excellent book. It is an important step forward in global development scholarship because it combines a highly effective 'reality check' on development theory and practice and it offers accessible practical steps and intelligent advice on how to unpack and overcome persistent challenges to development work. It should be required reading for aspirant development practitioners and policymakers.' Craig Hammer, Program Manager, The World Bank'It is rare to encounter a generalized explanation of the policymaking process in developing countries that doubles as a practical guide for the policy analyst. Understanding the Policymaking Process in Developing Countries is one such contribution. Ascher's structured and thorough explication of the policy process in developing countries, including the social, political, and institutional dimensions, is especially valuable for the practicing policy scientist.' Matthew Auer, Dean of the School of Public and International Affairs, University of Georgia'This timely book by an experienced development thinker helps remind us that good development policies and programs require more than careful analysis. Effective policymaking also requires that those charged with implementing policies and programs be willing and able to ask the right questions about how the policy process works.
