    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Emergence of Video Processing Tools presents stories of the development of early video tools and systems designed and built by artists and technologists during the late 1960s and 70s. Split over two volumes, the contributors examine the intersection of art and science and look at collaborations among inventors, designers and artists trying to create new tools to capture and manipulate images in revolutionary ways. The contributors include 'video pioneers,' who have been active since the emergence of the aesthetic, and technologists, who continue to design, build and hack media tools. The book also looks at contemporary toolmakers and the relationship between these new tools and the past. • The Biomimicry Revolution

Columbia University Press The Biomimicry Revolution

Book SynopsisHenry Dicks explores the philosophical significance of biomimicry, the application and adaptation of strategies found in nature to the development of artificial products and systems. He argues that biomimicry can serve as the basis for a new environmental philosophy that radically alters how we understand and relate to the natural world.Trade Review[The Biomimicry Revolution] provides not only an understanding of the theory and practice of biomimicry, but also a detailed and in-depth analysis of philosophy, classification, and problematization. These features enable the reader to understand that biomimicry is a coherent new entity and philosophy. This book can be used as a quality addition to the literature on a comprehensive philosophical analysis of biomimicry. * Regional Science Policy & Practice *This is an exciting and intellectually invigorating study into the underlying philosophy of biomimicry. Building upon the three principles central to biomimicry—nature as model, nature as measure, nature as mentor—Dicks creates a new philosophical framework structured by technics, ethics, and epistemology. What follows is a lively and groundbreaking ontological inquiry into ‘the nature of nature’ and what we can learn from nature about sustainably inhabiting the earth. -- Adrian Parr, author of Earthlings: Imaginative Encounters with the Natural WorldThe book, rooted in the continental tradition of philosophy, takes a fairly liberal approach to semantics and association, but is written in a very clear manner, and is well structured and relatively easy to follow. * Quarterly Review of Biology *In many instances, Dicks demonstrates a remarkable ability to navigate unexplored conceptual terrains, which have not been thoroughly examined, guided primarily by his biomimetic principles. * Journal of Ecohumanism *Table of ContentsPrefaceIntroduction: Biomimicry as a New Philosophy1. A portfolio of iconic photographs by American masters—including Richard Avedon, Cass Bird, Henry Clarke, Trade Review"This version contains much more detailed information that was not exposed in the first telling, which is why the reader must read the text rather than think this is just one more glorious coffee table book featuring the creations of Maison Dior designed by all who held the reins since day one." —NEW YORK JOURNAL OF BOOKS"The Brooklyn Museum's upcoming Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams is one of the fall's most anticipated exhibitions, and this catalogue is a perfect way to bring the show—which features more than 200 haute couture garments in addition to sketches, videos, photos, and other items—home with you." —TOWN & COUNTRY"It wouldn’t be a Rizzoli publication if weren’t illustrated with outstanding illustrations and photographs, and these from artist Katerina Jebb (shown) and the world’s most famous photographers do indeed dazzle. . . • Salvatore Ferragamo 18981960

    Rizzoli Electa Salvatore Ferragamo 18981960

Book SynopsisA thorough exploration of Salvatore Ferragamo's life and work: an inescapable opportunity to analyze the importance of his creativity and entrepreneurial instinct. One hundred years have passed since Salvatore Ferragamo opened his first store, the Hollywood Boot Shop, opposite the recently built Grauman's Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. This set the seal on the success he achieved in America, where he had emigrated in 1915. He was perfectly integrated in the film world of those years, as important directors entrusted him with the design and creation of shoes for the film stars. His customers were movie actresses and actors, producers, and directors, who could no longer do without the elegant and comfortable footwear of the shoemaker to the stars, as the young man from Irpinia was nicknamed. Furthermore, his persona had a certain standing in Hollywood: he sat on the city's executive committees and lived on the same street as Charlie Chaplin. On May 4, 1923, Holly Leaves magazine pointed out just how much Ferragamo was doing for the city and its residents. The book illustrates various aspects of his life and work, including the difficulties he had to endure during the war, which in the end resulted in incredible surges of creativity, using the limited materials available during those years of scarcity. He literally made shoes with everything, from corks to fish skin. A wide selection of Ferragamo's patents is also featured. Kept today in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome, these important documents testify to his boundless creativity and mastery of the trade.

Intertwining these essays, Susan Yelavich and Barbara Adams have been very skillful weavers. And, therefore, very effective future-makers. -- Ezio Manzini, Professor of Design at the Politecnico di Milano, ItalyA probing investigation of the design of design, this heroically optimistic book looks beyond mere things to their imbrication by the social, the political, and the ecological. Revealing layers of informality, resistance, and unpredictability in form-making, these essays whiz across borders in search of both the insubordination of objects and of the ways our relationships with them can make happy changes in the world we inhabit and invent together. -- Michael Sorkin, The City College of New York, USAThe future has never felt more uncertain, but Design as Future-Making truly captures the role that design can and will play in moving us forward. Van der Laan developed a number of powerful lines of thought, three of which are introduced here: the search for a theory of architecture; the establishment of a three-dimensional system of proportions named Plastic Number; and analogy as the mainspring of human thinking. This triad of deeply interconnected intellectual strategies represents his most important instruments of thought' and is rooted in the careful observation of phenomena as they are presented to us rather than relying on conventional beliefs. Van der Laan''s instruments of thought lead us to reconsider the origins of human creation, urging a deeper examination of our perceptual and cognitive response to the limitlessness of the surrounding environment. On this basis, Van der Laan develops a unique

Book SynopsisJohn Chris Jones was born in 1927, in Aberystwyth, Wales. Jones studied engineering at the University of Cambridge, and went on to work for AEI in Manchester, England. In 1962 he instigated an influential conference on design methods, which led to the formation of the Design Research Society which he chaired from 1971-73. In 2004 he was presented with the Society's Lifetime Achievement Award and from 1970-74 Jones was the first Professor of Design at The Open University, UK.Trade ReviewDesigning Designing is a particularly redemptive text ... not only because of the immense self-awareness and epistemic humility Jones demonstrates, but also because it explores in both its content and its form what else design and designing could be. In stark contrast to the predictable and stolid reification of design methods, principles, and practices today, this open-ended flexibility and responsiveness in design practice reflects in the structure of the book itself: a diverse collection of essays, personal reflections, anecdotes, conversations, interviews, and poetry. * Design and Culture *Foregrounding the performing of designing as an ongoing experimental lived practice that is at once personal, social and institutional, this astonishingly prescient book offers fresh insights into how design expertise can be mobilized to address contemporary challenges. This re-issue should inspire a new generation of designers to think deeply and critically about designing, what makes it possible or constrains it, and its positive and negative unfolding consequences. -- Lucy Kimbell, Director, Social Design Institute and Professor of Contemporary Design Practices at the University of Arts London, UKTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Introduction to the revised edition by Clive Dilnot Foreword by C. Book SynopsisEvocative and symbolic designs based on the ancient tradition of Polynesian tattoo art.The beauty of Polynesian art is perhaps most evident in the tradition of Polynesian tattooing, which has existed for more than two thousand years and is infused with rich symbolism and spiritual meaning. Roberto Gemori designs tattoos reflecting this tradition, drawing from each person’s own history of personal struggles, adversities, and triumphs. In his approach to tattoo art, Gemori takes the meaningful moments of a person’s life story and weaves them into a creative design, such that the tattoo itself becomes a form of personal empowerment, representing qualities a person is working to cultivate in their life and challenges they have overcome. The author presents here modern tattoo designs inspired by Polynesian art to color and contemplate for inspiration and transformation. In addition to a short introduction on Polynesian art and symbolism, the book features 42 designs for coloring, each accompanied by a description of the image’s unique meaning. Book SynopsisSituating Design in Alberta makes the case that design has the potential to drive economic growth, improve quality of life, and promote sustainability in the province and across the country. Contributors bring both scholarly and practice-based perspectives and come from diverse disciplines including architecture, interior design, industrial design, and visual communications. The collection is organized around four main topics—history, education, business, and sustainability—within which the authors explore a wide range of issues. This synergy of different design approaches lends a sense of forward momentum to the field, stimulates reflection about opportunities and challenges for both practitioners and policy makers, and provides a model for future studies in other regions. • The Hidden Mod in Modern Art: London, 1957-1969

Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art The Hidden Mod in Modern Art: London, 1957-1969

Book SynopsisAn investigation of the outsized influence of the Mod subculture on key figures of the 1960s London art scene Bonding over matters of taste and style, the ‘Mods’ of late 1950s London recognised in one another shared affinities for Italian-style suits, tidy haircuts, espresso bars, Vespa scooters and the latest American jazz. In this groundbreaking book, leading art historian Thomas Crow argues that the figure of the Mod exerted an influence beyond its assumed social boundaries by exemplifying the postwar metropolis in all of its excitement and complexity. Crow examines the works of key figures in the London art scene of the 1960s, including Robyn Denny, David Hockney, Pauline Boty, Bridget Riley and Bruce McLean, who shared and heightened aspects of this new and youthful urbanity. The triumphant arrival of the international counterculture forced both young Mods and established artists to reassess and regroup in novel, revealing formations. Understanding the London Mod brings with it a needed, up-to-date reckoning with the legacies of Situationism, Social Art History and Cultural Studies.Distributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British ArtTrade Review“[An] expert running commentary throughout...with many more references and pictures that explain and sequence their relevance in today’s modern culture”—Matt Mead, Gigslutz [Online Music Site]“In this groundbreaking book, leading art historian Thomas Crow argues that the figure of the Mod exerted an influence beyond its assumed social boundaries by exemplifying the postwar metropolis in all of its excitement and complexity.”—paulineboty.org“[An] elegantly counterintuitive account”—J. J. Charlesworth, ArtReview“A meticulous account of the imbrications between artmaking and stylemaking in postwar London...Crow recovers the figure of the mod...[and] forges a new canon, reimagining the art of the time in a fine-tuned, deeply aesthetic mise-en-scène...His prose is scrupulous, just so, and the many glossy full-color illustrations exalt his wide array of objects.”—Alex Kitnick, Artforum“[Crow] is wary of any Cultural Studies-style attempt to elevate ‘the model over the agency of its objects (that is, the Mods/Stylists themselves)’. This book is a testament— itself aptly crisp and understated — to that agency.”—James Cahill, The London Journal
