Nova Science Publishers Inc Contact Dermatitis
Book SynopsisContact dermatitis is a non-infectious inflammatory skin disease caused by an offending substance localized at the site of contact. The prevalence and incidence are increasing throughout the world, especially in Europe and North America. There are two main groups irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis with the former being more frequent. However, more than 4,000 contact allergens are known to cause allergic contact dermatitis in populations, of which nickel is the most common. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed IV type hypersensitivity resulting from cutaneous contact with a specific allergen. In pathogenesis, there is a significant difference between irritant and allergic dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis is a nonimmunologic, nonspecific inflammatory reaction to a wide range of chemical, physical or mechanical hazardous causes involving the innate immune system without prior sensitization. On the other hand, in a delayed type of hypersensitivity, concomitant activation of both the innate and adaptive immune systems is required. Recent studies disclose the role of TH17 in the pathogenesis of allergic contact dermatitis. Despite a distinct pathogenesis of both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, there is no absolute visual distinction between both types of contact dermatitis. In general, irritant contact dermatitis tends to be milder than its allergic counterpart. Patch testing is a standardized diagnostic procedure used to confirm the causative allergen. The most common technique is an occlusive patch test, but in exceptional circumstances a modification of the patch test such as a photopatch test, open test, repeated open application test (ROAT), strip patch test or atopic patch test is used. Irritant contact dermatitis does not possess special testing. The diagnosis is therefore established by exclusion of negative test results in patch testing. Patch test may also be performed in infants and children, whereby the indications and testing technique are the same as in adults. In the management of contact dermatitis, the keystone is to cease causal exposure, meaning avoiding contact with the offending substance. In topical therapy, the choice of active substance is important, but a suitable vehicle disposes transportation to the site of inflammation. Selection of the vehicle depends on the clinical appearance and course of disease. The choice of an unsuitable vehicle may result in the drop-out of topical therapy. Topical corticosteroids are the mainstay therapy. Calcineurin inhibitors are employed in dermatology as an alternative therapy to topical corticosteroids with a better safety profile. Systemic treatments are used in severe cases and may provide temporary remission, but are not always suitable for prolonged use due to adverse effects. Alitretinoin is used to treat severe and refractory chronic hand dermatitis. After clinical clearance of contact dermatitis, the skin barrier requires restoration therapy provided by a moisturizing agent, which should be used for a prolonged period. The application of a moisturizing agent promotes epidermal barrier healing, prolongs the time to flare and reduces the number of flares. Most frequently, absolute avoidance of the triggering offending contact is very difficult, or even impossible. Therefore, protective measures to prevent renewed skin contact are indicated. Any type of symptomatic treatment cannot substitute this approach.

Springer Editions Clinical Examination and Differential Diagnosis of Skin Lesions
Book SynopsisConceived as a guide for practitioners in their work in dermatology, this book is unique in its approach. From cutaneous signs to the richness of differential diagnosis, it guides practitioners through every step, from semiological analysis to diagnosis. The aim is to provide readers with the essentials of relevant dermatological reasoning. The first part of the book focuses on physical examination and on recognizing basic lesions, the practitioner’s building blocks. The diseases requiring understanding are then described in the form of a richly illustrated atlas, in which each diagram has been chosen as an exemplary educational tool. In the final part, differential diagnosis is proposed in the form of various tables summarizing the different cutaneous signs, providing readers with a complete toolkit to assist with diagnosis. This book will give trainee dermatologists, general physicians and internists the knowledge they need to identify basic lesions and a complete and detailed overview of the various diseases they are likely to encounter. At the same time, experienced dermatologists will find this book a valuable reference work for differential diagnosis.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“A clinical approach to differential diagnosis of skin lesions is presented in a logical and practical manner in this book. ... The purpose is to educate medical professionals in dermatology. This is a straightforward book that is useful to help organize one’s dermatology foundation. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Clinical Cases in Neonatal and Infant Dermatology
Book SynopsisThis book is a concise practical guide designed to facilitate the clinical decision-making process in the management of neonates and infants. Dermatologists and general pediatricians who offer primary care to children must be knowledgeable in managing pediatric dermatological problems, and this title provides insightful reviews of a number of common and rare dermatologic cases. Clinical cases are a key component in modern medical education, assisting the trainee or recertifying clinician to work through unusual cases using best practice techniques. Pediatric dermatology is a particularly important discipline in this regard since it is a highly visual subject requiring the reader to describe often very subtle differences in the presentation of patients and define accurately the diagnostic and management criteria to base their clinical decision-making on. Clinical Cases in Neonatal and Infant Dermatology concisely covers how to approach diagnosing and managing skin disease in the very youngest patients. Each chapter focuses on a particular case and emphasizes how to make an appropriate choice when deciding which diagnostic tool or management strategy would be most suitable. Potential complications are detailed and management tips provided to enable the reader to develop a deep understanding of how approach the care of these patients within their day-to-day clinical practice. This book therefore represents an ideal up-to-date resource for all practitioners who encounter these conditions as part of their everyday practice.Table of ContentsA infant with generalized pimples and nodules.- A newborn with a large facial segmental vascular lesion.- A newborn with several white spots on the forehead.- A one-and-a-half-month-old boy with recurrent fever, heat intolerance and diminished sweating.- Acrodermatitis Enteropathica in a 7-month-old baby boy.- An 11-month-old child with a nodular lesion on her right buttock.- An eczematous lesion on the forehead of a three-month-old child.- An infant with disseminated red scaling papules.- Axillary Dermatitis in a newborn.- Baby girl with widespread lesions on the face and alopecic nodules of the scalp.- Benign Cephalic Histiocytosis.- Congenital skin scars.- Cryotherapy Treatment in Infantile Hemangioma.- Epidermolytic ichthyosis.- Incontinentia Pigmenti With Ocular Involvement.- Infantile erythroderma caused by focal infection.- Infantile hemangioma: successful treatment with topical treatment.- Infantile Type Atopic Dermatitis.- Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome.- Oral Isotretinoin Treatment Of Harlequin Ichthyosis.- Oral Propranolol Treatment for Infantile Hemangioma.- Perianal dermatitis.- Skin manifestation in congenital syphilis: a serial cases.- Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome.- Subcutaneous indurated plaques in a newborn.- Vesicles on the tongue of a 3-month-old baby.- A 1-year-old boy with multiple papules.- A Case of High Risk Multisystem Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis in 22 Months Old Boy.- A Case with erythema, scales and itching.

Springer Mycobacterial Skin Diseases
Book SynopsisWe have endeavoured in this book to bring the reader up-to-date information, which will contribute to an enhanced ability to diagnose and treat mycobacterial skin diseases. This volume is mainly concerned with conveying to dermatologists, microbiologists, immunologists, dermatologists in training, registrars in other specialties and interested family practitioners, a concise appraisal of some recent developments in the various aspects of myco bacterial skin diseases. The chapters dealing with bacteriology, pathology and immunology have been planned to appear at the beginning of the book to provide the necessary conceptual framework for the section on clinical science, which deals with the variety of clinical states. The value of the clinical descriptions is vastly enhanced by a careful reading of the earlier chapters. The contributing authors have been most cooperative in making this, the tenth volume in the New Clinical Applications in Dermatology series, an excellent treatise. I thank each of them for their superb contributions. If this book stimulates and encourages a greater interest in, and a better understanding of, mycobacterial skin diseases, and enables physicians to serve more effectively those who suffer, the time and effort spent to produce it will be amply rewarded. PROFESSOR MARWALI HARAHAP IX SERIES EDITOR'S FOREWORD It was with great pleasure that I heard of Professor Harahap's wish to produce a volume on mycobacterial skin diseases.Table of Contents1. Springer Verlag, Singapore A Treatise on Topical Corticosteroids in Dermatology: Use, Misuse and Abuse
Book SynopsisThis treatise aims to fill up the lacuna and to contribute significantly to the dissemination of knowledge about the indication/contraindication, mechanism of action, ethical use, side-effects and various other facets related to topical corticosteroid. Topical corticosteroids (TC) have greatly enhanced dermatologists’ ability to effectively treat several difficult dermatoses. The available range of formulations and potencies allows them to flexibly treat all groups of patients, different phases of disease, and different anatomic sites.Improper/incomplete knowledge about topical corticosteroids’ mechanism of action, indications, classifications, and contraindications has produced a rapid rise in the incidence of improper use of these drugs, which could potentially bring disrepute to this entire group of amazing drugs. Responsibility for disseminating proper knowledge regarding when, where, and how to use TC both to internists and patients primarily rests with dermatologists. In this regard, the benefits of rational and ethical use and the potential harm of overuse and misuse for nonmedical, especially cosmetic purposes, should be clearly conveyed before prescribing TC.Table of ContentsTopical corticosteroid: development and evolution.- Topical corticosteroid: pharmacology.- Dermatological indications and usage of topical corticosteroid.- Ethical use of topical corticosteroids.- Topical corticosteroid during pregnancy: Indications, safety and precautions.- Topical corticosteroid during breast feeding: Pros and cons.- Topical corticosteroid: Use and misuse in pediatric age group.- Topical steroid as cosmetic cream: A social background of steroid dermatitis.- Rational and ethical use of topical corticosteroids based on safety and efficacy.- Topical steroid damaged face topical steroid damaged groin Topical steroid damaged skin.- The red skin syndromes.- Topical steroid abuse: Indian perspective.- Topical steroid abuse across the globe.- Systemic side-effects of topical corticosteroids.- Topical corticosteroid addiction and phobia.- Side-effects of topical steroids.- Treatment of topical steroid damaged skin.- Topical steroids: Regulatory issues.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Evolution of Atopic Dermatitis in the 21st Century
Book SynopsisThis comprehensive guide offers a state-of-the-art overview of basic and clinical aspects of atopic dermatitis (AD).The name "atopic dermatitis" was first used in 1933, and Drs. Lewis Webb Hill and Marion B. Sulzberger presented their report "Evolution of atopic dermatitis" in 1935. Their observations accurately forecasted the contemporary issues in the management of the condition, such as the conclusions that should be drawn from our understanding of the pathogenesis of AD, and the use of steroids as the main treatment. Several aggravating factors have recently been identified, and these also need to be addressed. In this context, the expert contributors to this book describe and discuss the evolution of atopic dermatology from Sulzberger’s era to the present day, including clinical manifestations, etiopathology and treatment. In addition, it explores skin care intervention, the role of microbiom and GWAS studies, and presents unique, previously unpublished cohort studies. It provides insights into the dynamic changes in AD since Sulzberger introduced topical steroids for its treatment. It is a valuable resource for dermatologists, medical practitioners and researchers who are interested in atopic dermatology.Table of ContentsPart 1. Introduction 1.- History and definition Part 2. Springer Verlag, Singapore Skin Diseases in Females
Book SynopsisThis book covers dermatological and related esthetic concerns specific to female patients. Since knowing what’s normal is as important as knowing what’s not, first chapters covers physiological differences in the skin of women and the changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Certain commonly encountered dermatoses are more frequent in females – chronic telogen effluvium, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, pigmented contact (cosmetic) dermatitis, etc., which are explained in a more focused manner. Dermatoses exclusive to females involving the vulva is discussed at length. These include common papulosquamous conditions such as psoriasis, lichen planus, and lichen sclerosus as well as the uncommon but challenging plasma cell vulvitis. Breast dermatoses also are predominantly encountered in women and are described in detail in this book. Importantly, the safety of drugs and biologics in pregnancy and lactation have been covered too. One section is dedicated to the emotional and psychological burden of skin disease in women and certain disorders requiring psychiatric intervention such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (trichotillomania, trichotemnomania) and body dysmorphic disorder. Furthermore, commonly used cosmeceuticals and frequently performed esthetic procedures such as chemical peels, botulinum toxin, and soft tissue augmentation (fillers) are well explained. Skin diseases in females can cause a significant emotional and psychological impact that can sometimes be more serious than the physical impact. There is a paucity of comprehensive published literature in both journal and books and this book aims to fill that gap. This book is meant as a resource for dermatology residents and trainees, practitioners, and teachers. Table of Contents1. Physiological changes in femalesa. Male versus female skin b.
