    Edinburgh University Press Democracy

Book SynopsisDemocracy: Problems and Perspectives provides a critical review of the scholarly and political debates about democratic thought and of arguments about democratic practice. On the basis of an interpretation of Immanuel Kant''s political philosophy, the book presents democracy as a regime type in which citizens, who are united to give law, rule themselves and where such self-rule is exercised by citizens who embrace local and global patriotism. In the course of developing this idea of democracy, the book addresses issues such as human rights and their relationship to democracy; the policy of the global promotion of human rights and democracy; sovereignty and the nation-state; popular sovereignty and multicultural citizenship; and cosmopolitanism and cosmopolitan democracy. The book will stimulate controversial discussions about the varieties of democratic imaginations and visions, past and present as well as the future of democracy in the current stage of globalisation.Trade ReviewA wide-ranging and thought-provoking survey of key problems of contemporary democratic politics. • Towards a Deliberative and Associational

Edinburgh University Press Towards a Deliberative and Associational

Book SynopsisIn an era where citizens of liberal democracies are becoming increasingly disillusioned, dissatisfied and disenfranchised by the dominant political institutions and decision-making processes in these polities, new ideas of how to deepen democracy, re-engage citizens and enhance decision-making legitimacy are required. This book suggests that a combination of deliberative democracy and associational democracy is both a normatively desirable and an empirically plausible solution to the complex problems that are present in contemporary societies--as well as being compatible with many recent trends in governance. Author Stephen Elstub argues that by combining deliberative with associational democracy, the weaknesses of each model alone are compensated by the other, allowing the key strengths of each to manifest themselves. And he goes further by offering a detailed set of original, institutional requirements for liberal democracies that, if adopted, will enable a deliberative and associational democracy to be realised in practice.Table of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Book SynopsisSonja Theron is a part-time lecturer in the Department of Political Sciences, University of Pretoria and a researcher at the Centre for Mediation in Africa, University of Pretoria, South Africa.Trade ReviewThis is a remarkable book, providing a cogent analysis to a complex question about how a state that was born of a long history of war can graduate from political and social fracturing in order to forge a nation-state and a sense of collective nationhood. The book has advanced to a new level the debate about the role of political leadership in state-building and nation-building in Africa’s newest country and filling an important gap in the literature on South Sudan. It is part political history, part sociology and largely deep ethnography about how people live with and overcome daunting ravages of more than half a century of vicious and devastating Sudanese state violence, fratricidal violence, and politico-military rivalries between the leaders. Sonja Theron has demonstrated how challenging and yet important it is to define such terms as “leadership”, “political will” and “national identity” in their historical specificity and contingency. She convincingly argues that South Sudan is trapped between efforts to build a nation out of multitude of competing entities and the ambition by some groups, regions, and cultural identities to remain autonomous. The result is a brilliant expose of a long struggle for freedom that has now culminated in an independent state but being hamstrung by divisions that are rooted in that long history of conflict, violence and war. This book is a must read for anyone wishing to understand, not just this complex political and social history, but also the difficult question of whether South Sudan will survive as a viable nation. * Professor Jok Madut Jok, Syracuse University, USA *This is an important contribution to scholarly work seeking to understand why South Sudan has been unable to build a nation that sustains peace. It also makes for stark reading for those working on peacebuilding efforts in the country and beyond. Theron skilfully interrogates South Sudan’s chaotic and destructive leadership patterns and processes and how these have prevented any chance of peace. Her book untangles the complex realities of how nation and state-building efforts, whether in South Sudan or elsewhere are held hostage to the violent competing visions of a country’s political elites. Theron’s book comes at an opportune time in the arduous effort to secure a viable future for South Sudan after the painstakingly crafted 2018 peace agreement. Her insights are a reminder of what is at stake for this young country: if dangerously repetitive leadership patterns of relying on coercion, rewards and identity to create state and nationhood are not replaced with societal trust, mutuality, or collective responsibility – key ingredients for peacebuilding – fragmentation, violence and war will continue to mar the South Sudan’s progress. * Comfort Ero, President and CEO of Crisis Group *Table of ContentsIntroduction PART ONE: Origins: The Southern Sudan as People, Polity and “Problem” (c. 1821-1983) Conquest and Colonisation Independence and Rebellion PART TWO: The War Continues: The Fight for Nation and State (1983 – 2002) War and New Leadership Inner Turmoil PART THREE: Independence and Civil War: Building a State, Forgetting a Nation (2002 – 2015) Negotiating and Implementing Peace Freedom, Fragility and Fragmentation Conclusion

Book SynopsisIn recent years serious concerns emerged over the state of European democracy. Many democracy indices are reporting a year-on-year drift towards less liberal politics in the countries of the European Union. Polls regularly suggest that the voters are coming to question democratic norms more seriously than for many decades. Here, Richard Youngs assesses these risks as many analysts, journalists and politicians stressed the danger of Europe descending into an era of conflict, driven by xenophobic nationalism and nativist authoritarians slowly dismantling liberal democratic rights. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has intensified these fears. There is another side of the democratic equation, however. Youngs argues that governments, EU institutions, political parties, citizens and civil society organisations have gradually begun to push back in defence of democracy. With each chapter, Youngs shows how many governmental, political and social actors have developed responses to Europe's democraTrade ReviewA lot of great works have been devoted to democratic backsliding, the surge of populism and the rule of law crisis in Europe. The great strength of this book is that it looks at how we can fight back and gives an insightful overview of innovative forces that are reinvigorating politics and resisting autocratization, on both the national and European Union levels. A great read for analysts interested in the resilience of our democracies, and also for us practitioners, so that we can inspire each other in our quest to rebuild European democracy. * Katalin Cseh, MEP of Hungary's Momentum Movement, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament's Renew Europe group *There is immense concern today about the troubles facing democracy in Europe. While most scholars and commentators have focused on analyzing the causes of the troubles, Rebuilding European Democracy examines the resistance to democratic decay and budding attempts to renew democracy from within. Revitalizing democracy in Europe and across the globe requires understanding the reasons for democratic dissatisfaction as well as coming up with effective responses to it. Rebuilding European Democracy is an important contribution to this latter effort. * Professor Sheri Berman, Barnard College, Columbia University, USA *Table of Contents1. Introduction 2. Book Synopsis Curing the causes and consequences of Trumpism It''s no secret that the United States faces extraordinary political and societal challenges, even as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Political polarization and extremism are the most apparent symptoms, resulting from long-term economic and social inequities as well as a toxic information ecosystem. It is easy to blame Donald Trump for the sad state of American democracy. After all, he abused his executive authority, spread false claims, and even incited violence. But Trumpism is almost certain to outlast Trump himself. The grievances he exploited and the aggrieved to whom he appealed existed well before he became president and likely will endure after he is gone from the political scene. The current political atmosphere is poisonous for those who operate on the basis of facts, reason, and logic. It is time to step back from this dangerous precipice and reflect on the causes of the serious threats to American democracy, procedural justice, and a reason-based society. With polarization now entrenched and authoritarianism gaining strength, no one should assume that facts somehow will triumph over falsehoods and reason will prevail over emotion. Drawing on his personal experiences in the D.C. policy world, Darrell West offers advice for protecting people, organizations, and the country as a whole from our contemporary challenges. This book makes the risks to democracy understandable by explaining specific threats and offering concrete ideas for ameliorating them. It will appeal to anyone interested in American politics, democracy, elections, mass media, technology, and governance.

Book SynopsisOffering a broad exploration of the cultural history of democracy in the medieval age, this volume claims that, though not generally associated with the term, the Middle Ages deserve to be included in a general history of democracy. The term was never widely employed during this period, the dominant attitude towards democracy was outright hostility, and none of the medieval polities thought of itself as a democracy. Despite this, this study highlights a wide variety of ideas, practices, procedures, and institutions that, although different from their ancient predecessor (direct democracy) or modern successor (liberal representative democracy), played a significant role in the history of democracy. This volume covers almost 1,000 years and a wide range of territories. It deals with different political spheres (ecclesiastical and secular) and socio-political settings (courtly, urban, and rural) and examines the phenomenon from the local level up to the universal realm. Book SynopsisThis volume offers a broad exploration of the cultural history of democracy in the Renaissance. The Renaissance has rarely been considered an important moment in the history of democracy. Nonetheless, as this volume shows, this period may be seen as a democratic laboratory in many, often unexpected, ways. The classicizing cultural movement known as humanism, which spread throughout Europe and beyond in this period, had the effect of vastly enhancing knowledge of the classical democratic and republican traditions. Greek history and philosophy, including the story of Athenian democracy, became fully known in the West for the first time in the postclassical world. Partly as a result of this, the period from 1400 to 1650 witnessed rich and historically important debates on some of the enduring political issues at the heart of democratic culture: issues of sovereignty, of liberty, of citizenship, of the common good, of the place of religion in government. Book SynopsisBig Media, Big Money is a lively and scathing critique of the contemporary communications industry, examining how media ownership and the profit-making motive affect the messages we receive in alarming ways. Through close readings of recent news events and critical examination of corporate influence, Bettig and Hall conclude that current interconnections among media, big business, government, and education pose a serious threat to democratic communications. The second edition includes three new chapters, covering the contemporary Hollywood film industry; the changing landscape of the music industry; and ad creep, the proliferation of advertising into previously ad-free venues such as schools and children's television programming.Trade ReviewIn Big Media, Big Money, Ronald Bettig and Jeanne Hall have brought their careers' worth of experience together to produce perhaps the single best exposition of the political economy of the media that I have seen. It is a thrilling, provocative, and highly original book that weaves issues like the commercialization of education into the narrative. I recommend it unconditionally for classroom use. -- Robert W. McChesney, author, Blowing the Roof Off the Twenty-First Century: Media, Politics, and the StruggleBettig and Hall have done it again! The second edition of Big Media, Big Money expands and updates the original’s engaging overview of the American media system and its intermixture of new and traditional technologies. Big Media, Big Money explains how the concentration of ownership, the structure of media companies, and advertisers’ demands combine to limit what can be asked, said, or depicted in the media. Given the emphasis on what we can do from the grass roots to remedy this situation, this book is particularly relevant and timely. -- Eileen R. Meehan, Southern Illinois UniversityThe new edition of Big Media, Big Money could not have come at a more important time. This may be the most important book written on the various ways in which power, capital, and politics combine to undermine the media saturated culture that is undoing any vestige of democratic values, identities, and hopes. But this is more than a powerful criticism of the media in its multiple variants, it is also a road map for citizens who want to fight back, who believe that a critical and informed formative culture is fundamental to any viable notion of democracy. Any one who wants to understand the both the destructive power and democratic possibilities of the media in today's world has to read this book. -- Henry Giroux, Global Television Network Chair in Communication Studies, McMaster UniversityTable of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction: Beat the Press Chapter 2 Media Merger Mania: Concentration in the Media Industry Chapter 3 The Hollywood Film Industry: Do We Really Need It? Book SynopsisFrom women’s suffrage to Civil Rights for African Americans, to the environment, and the gay and lesbian liberation movement, the American Left has achieved notable successes in the 20th and 21st centuries. Sometimes celebrated and sometimes reviled, the Left has taken on many forms and reinvented itself many times over the past century. In All-American Rebellion, historian Robert Cottrell traces the rise and fall, ebb and flow of left-wing American movements. Following an overview of early 20th century movements, Cottrell focuses on the 1960s to today, offering readers a concise introduction and helping them to understand the political and ideological roots of the Left today. Cottrell includes chapters on the most recent versions of the American left, discussing community organizing, gay liberation, the women’s movement, the Campaign for Economic Democracy, the nuclear freeze movement, opposition to U.S. intervention in Central America, the anti-WTO campaign, Code Pink, Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and more. The demand for and support of democracy and the quest for empowerment in various guises unifies these different lefts to one another and to the general unfolding of American history. Cottrell argues that democratic engagement has proven inconsistent and at times outright contradictory. The Left has been most successful when it fully embraces a democratic vision.

Little, Brown & Company Dissent: How the Radical Right Silenced Its

Book SynopsisIn DISSENT, award-winning investigative journalist Jackie Calmes brings readers closer to the truth of who Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is, where he came from, and how he and the Republican party at large managed to secure one of the highest seats of power in the land.Kavanaugh's rise to the justice who solidified conservative control of the supreme court is a story of personal achievement, but also a larger, political tale: of the Republican Party's movement over four decades toward the far right, and its parallel campaign to dominate the government's judicial branch as well as the other two.And Kavanaugh uniquely personifies this history. Fourteen years before reaching the Supreme Court, during a three-year fight for a seat on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin would say to Kavanaugh, "It seems that you are the Zelig or Forrest Gump of Republican politics. You show up at every scene of the crime."Featuring revelatory new reporting and exclusive interviews, DISSENT is a harrowing look into the highest echelons of political power in the United States, and a captivating survey of the people who will do anything to have it.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOver the last two decades, a fringe plan to call a convention under the Constitution's amendment mechanism-the nation's first ever-has inched through statehouses. Delegates, like those in Philadelphia two centuries ago, would exercise nearly unlimited authority to draft changes to our fundamental law, potentially altering anything from voting and free speech rights to regulatory and foreign policy powers. Such a watershed moment would present great danger, and for some, great power. In this important book, Feingold and Prindiville distill extensive legal and historical research and examine the grave risks inherent in this effort. But they also consider the role of constitutional amendment in modern life. Though many focus solely on judicial and electoral avenues for change, such an approach is at odds with a cornerstone ideal of the Founding: that the People make constitutional law, directly. In an era defined by faction and rejection of long-held norms, The Constitution in Jeopardy examines the nature of constitutional change and asks urgent questions about what American democracy is, and should be.
