Fox Chapel Publishing Violin Making, Second Edition Revised and
Book SynopsisUtilising fewer tools, this manual makes the violinmaking process easy for the everyday crafter. Using step-by-step instructions and hundreds of detailed drawings and colour photographs, the obscure language and unfamiliar techniques of instrument-making are given a populist overhaul in this newly revised and expanded resource. Requiring only basic tools and everyday woods, aspiring luthiers can begin each new project with full-size component cut-outs, which are included for each instrument piece. An inspiring full-colour gallery of violins made by other amateur crafters is also included. From cutting and shaping each piece to assembly and performance, the theory that only elite crafters can make wood instruments is debunked.Trade ReviewPacked with full-size patterns, step-by-step instructions - a nice departure from the usual use of photographs - you too can craft a wonderful instrument.I suspect that the book that Bruce Ossman has written, is the book he wishes he had available to him when he first fell in love with the violin while a student at Penn State University in the 1950s. It wasn't long before he self-taught himself to make his first instrument. As the sub-title of the book indicates, this book is not intended for the serious luthier making concert level instruments. Ossman's book is aimed at the average woodworker or motivated musician wishing to build a decent sounding, playable violin on his or her first attempt. The book begins with an overview of the entire 30-step building process utilizing many line drawings and sparse text. It's an excellent way to convey, to the novice builder, the violin in its deconstructed state and the logical sequence of steps necessary to pull it all together. This is followed by a gallery of color photos of the work of five makers, some amateurs and some professional. If one needs some inspiration before beginning a project, this section will provide it. The first chapter is devoted to the violin's anatomy and acoustics. Although there is enough literature on these topics alone to float a battleship, Ossman manages to cover the absolute bare-bone basics in just a few pages. The second chapter covers the materials which go into a violin as well as some of the preparatory steps necessary to build an instrument, including the fashioning of some simple tools like spool clamps, the body form and carving table. However, the discussion of tone woods, which one would expect in almost any other book on violin making, is almost non-existent here. The author's focus is definitely on construction. The heart of the book is chapter three, where Ossman takes the builder through the nuts and bolts of building a violin. He relies on a great many line drawings and straightforward text. Being so brief, there is no room for an in-depth discussions of why he opted for one method, approach, or material over any number of other options available to him. For example, the matter of finish is a topic about which countless books, articles, and scientific papers have been written, but Ossman simply instructs the builder to apply several coats of varnish with a sanding between coats. That's it. Still, he knows that if the reader follows his instructions, the end result will be a decent instrument, first time out. The appendix includes templates and full-sized plans, some of which are printed over two facing pages with the binding down the middle, but with registration marks so that when photocopied at full-size, they can be taped together. There is no instrument which is more steeped in mythology and lore than the violin, where grown men and women swear that the best instruments are made by the light of the August Moon, using 100 year old German spruce, harvested from the leeward sides of mountains and finished with shellac using some approximation of Stradivarius's mysterious recipe. Serious luthiers like these can discuss ad nauseum the merits of absolutely any aspect of the violin from the shape of the f-holes, to the types of strings used, to the glues employed, to the placement of the sound-post, and more. This is a different kind of book. For the first time builder, there is much to be said for Ossman's straightforward approach, where he has avoided many of the kinds of issues that more experienced builders delight in debating, but which might distract the novice from simply getting on with it.

So, if you are a new woodworker and need a new bench or just want to upgrade your shop with a new one this is the book for you. Take a look! Fox Chapel Publishing Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning: Everything
Book Synopsis"Fixtures and Chucks to Make for Woodturning" will help woodturners save money, expand their abilities and master new challenges, giving them more success and confidence at the lathe. It gathers all the essential information about woodturning chucks and fixtures in one place for the first time, making it more accessible. More than merely a reference for dedicated turners, this book is designed to help both beginners and advanced turners improve their skills and broaden the range of projects they tackle at the lathe, by presenting a carefully crafted combination of how-to advice and interesting, engaging projects. This book explains how to get the most from commercial chucks, centres and faceplates. It also shows how readers can make their own, tailoring the wood holders precisely to the work they want to do.Trade ReviewThe tagline for the book "Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning" says, "Everything you need to know to secure wood on your lathe" and I don't think that is an exaggeration. What more can there be when you have section headings of: Drive Centers and Live Centers Faceplates and Screw Centers Scroll Chucks Handy Shopmade Chucks Jam Chucks Collets and Mandrels Cole Jaws, Doughnut Chucks, Longworth Chucks Vacuum and Vacuum Systems Vacuum Chucks Steady Rests Turning Projects, and Assembled Pieces This book provides not only information on the above topics along with a multitude of photos but, also, is intermixed with projects such as turning an egg or a goblet with a lid. If you're wondering about turning punky wood or attaching to end grain, well that information is in here too. Fantastic! My Ratings of The Book Layout and Appearance: Good balance of photos, how-to instructions, projects. Thumbs Up! Instructions: Clear information and instructions Thumbs Up! Projects Selection: An unexpected bonus in this book. Great. Inspiration: Lots of information to open the door to creative turnings. Thumbs Up! Overall: Thumbs Up! * LumberJocks eMag *The title should be enough for even the expert woodturner to get excited about. How many times have turners fretted about ways to mount particular pieces? Author Green may in fact have the answer in this excellent and beautifully illustrated book. Green shows you how to make some excellent steadies as well as some interesting and novel PVC vacuum chucks. The author takes you through all of the standard chucks and shows how to make them work better for your turning. This is a great reference book that won't lie around collecting dust.Turners tend to get comfortable with learned methods, repeating a standard chucking process with ease until the day they run upon a situation where the tried and true won't work. I've been turning for a few years now, and every once in a while I have to mutter, "Now, how am I going to do that?" Doc Green pretty well has that question covered, and I believe anything beyond the realm of his new book may fall into the category of wild and crazy ideas. Doc divides the book into twelve sections, all well-illustrated with clear photographs showing what he's talking about. He covers drive centers and live centers, faceplates and screw centers, scroll chucks, shop made and jam chucks, collets and mandrels, cole jaws, doughnut chucks and Longworth chucks, vacuum systems and their chucks, steady rests, and several turning projects to practice methods he has described. Every method presented carries with it the necessary cautions about what not to do as well as how to do it best. He explains leverage and torque, how a turning tool puts stress on the workpiece, and how best to prepare a blank for mounting on the lathe. The really nice thing about this book is that every method is presented with alternatives, so there are a variety of ways to solve a given problem. There are also lots of shop-built jigs and aids included. Unless you've solved every problem in handling wood on the lathe, Doc's book will be invaluable for enlightening each new challenge along a woodturner's path of experience.Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning by Clarence Green covers both commercially produced and shop-made chucks, centers and faceplates. In addition to the projects for making your own shop helpers for turning projects, there are some projects that incorporate the use of these wood holders to create turned items. Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning (Fox Chapel Publishing, ISBN 978-1-56523-519-9) is priced at $22.95.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Spindle Turning Chapter 2: Faceplates Chapter 3: Scroll Chucks Chapter 4: More Chucks and Chucking Methods Chapter 5: Jam Chucks Chapter 6: Collets and Mandrels Chapter 7: Doughnut and Longworth Chucks Chapter 8: Vacuum and Vacuum Systems Chapter 9: Vacuum Chucks Chapter 10: Steady Rests Chapter 11: Illustrative Applications Chapter 12: Assembled Pieces

Fox Chapel Publishing Wooden Clocks: 31 Favorite Projects & Patterns
Book SynopsisThis book features a wonderful collection of clock projects from the editors of "Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts" magazine. Learn how to make beautiful time pieces including grandfather clocks and pendulum clocks! It includes projects for all abilities and tastes, from learning to cut pieces and assemble parts to finishing and personalising. The editors of "Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts" magazine have selected a collection of the most beloved clock projects - from fancy fretwork grandfather clocks to classic pendulum clocks and whimsical desk clocks. This book offers something for everyone - no matter what their level of scrolling expertise. Beginners will learn how to cut their pieces like an expert and assemble clock parts. More advanced crafters will appreciate the section on finishing clocks and personalising special gifts. The articles, that represent the most popular clocks since the inception of "Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts" in 2000, have been fully updated to reflect current clock part sizes.Trade ReviewOn the cover of Wooden Clocks the book claims to have 31 different plans but a review of the contents reveals only 27 different projects. The discrepancy is due 10 the fact that some chapters have more than one plan based on a common theme. The cover photo is also a bit misleading. It shows a wooden gear clock which is detailed as one of the projects. However the remaining 30 plans are for wooden clocks wilh conventional battery-powered clock mechanisms. All of the projects in the book have previously appeared in Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts magazine and are therefore designed to be made with the scrollsaw. The projects are set out according to the level of skill involved - beginner, intermediate and 'master'. Many of the clocks are scrollsawn shapes with clock fit-ups inserted into a circular recess. Some patterns are simple while olhers are quite elaborate with a number of separate components to be cut and glued together. More traditional styles include a simple Shaker Clock (including clock case), Lang Clock (wall clock with pendulum movement) and a miniature Grandfather Clock. The Keepsake Trinket and Woven Boxes all have a clock in their lid. In each case the box is glued up in layers from scrollsawn components. The ultimate project in the book is of course the Wooden Gear Clock. In addilion to the scale plans, photographs and step-by-step instructions provided with all of the projects, for this clock there are also cross-sections and expoded diagrams of how the wooden mechanism is assembled. Wooden Clocks has a variety of clocks with a wide appeal, suitable for scrollers looking for patterns with fit-ups as well as clockmakers seeking new challenges.

Book SynopsisWith more than 40 skill building lessons, "Intarsia Woodworking for Beginners" takes the reader on a journey from the concepts and basics of working with an intarsia pattern, cutting, sanding, gluing, creating a backer board and finishing, to techniques that will take a project to the next level, such as staining, shims, overlays, laminations, wood burning and carving texture. Kathy's progressive teaching style offers something for anyone working with inlaid wood. The lessons not only cover the basics, but also describe details to look out for like the nuances of working with multiple shades of wood or the best way to create colour breaks.Trade ReviewIntarsia - the making of pictures (rom pieces of solid timber - is one of the less commonly pursued woodworking disciplines. This is unfortunate, since the modern scrollsaw makes it easier than ever to do this work. It's impossible to say when Intarsia was first developed. Some believe it was invented by the Ancient Egyptians, some, by the Romans. The only certainty is that it was very popular in Italy during the lSth century and examples of lntarsia have been found in Italy and southern Germany dating from as long as 200 years before that. But, by the 17th century, Intarsia had virtually disappeared, having been replaced by marquetry and inlay. Since the 1970's, the craft has enjoyed a revival which now appears to be gathering pace. This book is essentially a collection of 2S projects of varying difficulty. The author is a highly successful artist resl)onsible for the design of more than a 110Usand animal figure and giftware items that have been sold worldwide. The first project in the book, a Goldfish, explains the basic intarsia techniques for simple intarsia patterns, how to cut and shape the pieces and how to glue them together. The second project, a Butterfly, introduces multiple colour work. The third project brings in discussion of overlays, shims (to add a 3-D effect), lamination and calVing. By the beginning of the fourth project, most of the important methods have been described and the space devoted to each project becomes smaller, consisting of list of materials and some quick tips to help ensure the work is completed satisfactorily. The projects cover a wide range from a horse's head, a train shaped photo frame and a lighthouse, to a small girl wearing boots, a lily cross and a racoon. The book is well illustrated with excellent photos and useful drawings. Aimed at the beginner rather than the very experi enced maker of Intarsia, it is obviously intended to help in the building of skills so as to go on to even more interesting and formidable work.

Native North Americans know the advantages of travelling by canoe, the serenity of the calm lakes and being one with nature allows us to reflect upon its beauty. This is even more enjoyable in a self-built strip canoe and Gilpatrick walks us through the process. In fact, there is a set of full size plans included for eight different canoes. Gil shows you how to make paddles and also goes into the details of making your own cane seats. Maybe the 19' 6" Grand Laker model is for you and the author even shows you how to add a motor if this is your desire. Gilpatrick has built over 500 canoes in his 30 years of experience. This book is the perfect book for both first timers and veterans alike.Step-by-step instructions and plenty of photographs explaining how 10 build a strip canoe; full-sized plans for eight different canoe models. There are two ways in which people are likely 10 start building a canoe. The first is when they are already accomplished woodworkers and they see the building of a canoe as a development of their interests and skills. The second is when they have little knowledge of woodworking but have an interest in and possibly a better than average knowledge of canoes. This book has been written with both types of reader in mind; it contains a single project with a number of variations. After a brief introduction and a discussion about safety issues, Chapter 2 begins with an examination of some of the variations which are possible in canoe design. For example, the bottom of the canoe may be flat or rounded and it may be built with or without a keel. Four profiles are suggested: General Purpose, White Water, Streamlined and Freighter. These variations are condensed into the 8 designs presented; they range in length from 4.9 to 6 metres. Construction of a canoe is undertaken by first making a strongback and mounting it at a convenient height at which to work. The strongback allows erection of the 'stations' along its length. Full-sized patterns of these stations for each of the canoes are contained in a sealed packet on the inside back cover of the book. These are the key to achieving exactly the shapes required. The pre-formed strips of wood that form the hull of the craft are then laid over and secured to the stations. Once the structure of the hull is complete, including the necessary filling and sealing, the stem is reinforced and the fibreglass applied. The inside of the canoe comes next then the decks, thwarts and seats. Each step in the construction process is explained in easy-to-read text supported by clear photographs. A special chapter is devoted to the making of repairs where these may be necessary and the final part of the book covers the construction of the paddle. The author claims to have supervised the building of some 500 canoes over a period of 30 years. His intensely practical book is a revision of an earlier work which was published under the same title.'This book will provide hours of fun and satisfaction for making superb canoes that work.'BUILDING A STRIP CANOE, by Gil Gilpatrick, is a revised edition that guides readers on building a canoe for any type of water. The author has built more than 500 canoes in his 30 years of teaching, while serving as an Allagash River master guide. Gilpatrick has field-tested countless canoes and made modifications to their designs. This step-by-step guide presents plans for building eight canoes. It begins with important safety advice and includes instructions for caning seats and making paddles. It's suited for the beginner who's never built a canoe or the experienced woodworker who wants to try a new design.I enjoyed reading the book and studying the photographs. I'll use some of his methods and refer back when I get into another boat building jam. It may even keep me out of trouble. And I will pick it up many more times just to look and think about my next stripper. There are many things I want to do in my lifetime. I can check off skydiving, writing a book, and a few others that I've counted myself fortunate enough to complete, but still there are more. I grew up in Florida, and I was lucky enough to have access to a number of rivers, a few bayous, and, of course, the Gulf of Mexico. During my high school days, one of my favorite summer activities was canoeing. I spent many days on Coldwater River or Blackwater River either with friends or solo (often on an ocean kayak because it was lighter and more fun to me). I will never forget one summer day by myself on Coldwater (frigid water year round) when I quietly rounded a bend on the water and came face-to-face with a mother bobcat that had come out from the woods with her two babies to drink from the river. She looked at me and gave the scariest deep growl/screech I'd ever heard - I think I almost flipped my canoe trying to get back out into the center of the river. She scurried away, but my heart was pounding an hour later. Another time I was out by myself was right after some major storms. I would often show up at the canoe outfitter north of town around 8am or 9am to get on the river before the crowds. On this particular day, I had asked them to drop me off about 15 miles north of the outfitter's final stop, considered The Day Trip. Probably thirty minutes down the river, I ran into a series of downed trees that completely crossed the river, forcing me to climb out of the canoe while standing on foot wide tree trunks. The tree line was too thick to try to go around the trees by pulling the canoe through the woods, so I was forced to carefully pull, push, and slide the canoe and my supplies over three or four trees that moved up and down in the water under my weight. When I finished the route about 7 or 8 hours later, I informed the outfitter about the trees and was told they'd dropped off about 30 other people at the same starting point, many with larger coolers and kids. Bad day for canoers. I haven't been canoeing in a few years, but I've got two boys, ages 2 and 5, who I hope will get a chance to do some canoeing on those same rivers someday. But before I take them, one thing I've always wanted to do is to build my own canoe. Specifically, a cedar strip canoe. I'm thinking an 18 foot flat hull might be nice for a trip with the boys. Maybe even a few handmade paddles to match. But I'm getting ahead of myself first, I need to actually figure out how to build one. And for that, I'm going to be eternally grateful to Gil Gilpatrick. Gil's been a guide in Maine for over 30 years, having carried his share of tourists down rivers galore. But it's not his river skills that I need right now (although he's got those in spades). What I need are his detailed instructions for constructing my own canoe, all covered in his book, Building A Strip Canoe, 2nd Edition. Before I tell you a bit more about this book, let me tell you that I've spent hours and hours hunting down techniques and discussions on the Internet related to building canoes. There's a lot out there, believe me. You'll find dozens of differing techniques and conflicting advice. It's a mess out there. But if you pay careful attention to many commenters and builders and check out who they often refer back to it's Gil Gilpatrick. When I started noticing his name on many websites, I quickly discovered that many canoe builders who have documented their own builds used the instructions provided by Gilpatrick. Be aware that many of Gilpatrick's earlier books, including the first edition to this book, are difficult to find or expensive to obtain. I tell you this only because if you ever think you might want to build your own canoe, now is the time to grab a copy of this book before it too becomes difficult to find. This one is in full color, and it even comes with removable templates in the back of the book for cutting out the patterns used to shape the eight different canoes he covers in this single book. It's a large sized book, too, so you won't be squinting at the photos wondering about any particular step. I've been mulling over building my own canoe for a little over a year now, and I've finally decided to do it. (My wife reads my posts, so I imagine as she's reading this she's shaking her head and considering calling her attorney.) I've got the space in my garage ready. I've got all the tools minus one (a router table fence for doing the bead/cove on the cedar strips - call my dad, Ashley, and he'll tell you the correct fence I need for my upcoming birthday). And I've read the book probably five or six times now, so I'm confident in the order of the process. The only part that makes me nervous is the fiberglass portion of the project, and I plan on practicing on scrap before I approach the real hull. Building a Strip Canoe covers everything - safety, prep work and supply assembly, building the backbone (the frame you'll first need to build along with the patterns from the included templates) that will provide your canoe support as you glue, staple, and form your canoe. And while I'm not 100% convinced that just anyone can build a canoe, I'll be the first to admit (as a technical writer by trade) that the instructions Gilpatrick provides are the clearest I could imagine, and after reading the book just once I knew that it contained the right details for me to follow along. I'm comfortable working with wood and many of the tools required, but I believe that even a novice with the right help (and maybe a friend with a table saw and some time) can build a canoe. Gilpatrick covers it all, including putting together authentic cane seating and paddles as well as a list of specialty supply vendors (in case you live somewhere that doesn't offer access to the fiberglass/epoxy materials and even the wood). This is really the only book you'll need should you decide you want to now (or ever) build your own canoe. I'm much more confident in this upcoming project with this book in my hand.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: Safety Chapter 2: The Canoe Models Chapter 3: The Preliminaries Chapter 4: Building the Hull Chapter 5: Fiberglassing Chapter 6: The Woodwork Chapter 7: Seats Chapter 8: Paddles Chapter 9: Repairs Appendix

Fox Chapel Publishing Great Book of Wooden Toys
Book SynopsisNorm Marshall was a well-known toy maker, whose classic toys were loved by children and woodworkers alike. They provided hours and hours of entertainment for countless generations and best of all - they were easy to build. Now you can build a Norm Marshall wooden toy! With "Great Book of Wooden Toys", you'll discover 37 three-dimensional projects, each complete with an exploded illustration, a materials list and detailed step-by-step instructions for a fool-proof building experience. More than 125 photographs show woodworkers how every piece goes together. A special chapter is also devoted to finishing or painting your toys for a professional look. Toys covered in this title include: Classic Model T car, Steamroller, Bulldozer, Biplane, Trains and much more. There are also 16 projects that are perfect for beginners - like a pull-along train and circus animals.Trade ReviewThis looks like a fun book. Great Book of Wooden Toys was originally published in 1986 by American Woodworker and this revised edition has new color photos and the instructions and plans have been updated. There are plans for making Trucks, Airplanes, Boats and Trains. If you're in the market to make toys for your kids or grandkids (or anyone else) this looks like a book for you. Personally, I like the trains the best! This book was first published in 1986 and has recently been revised for the current generation of hobbyists and woodworkers. The author, Norm Marshall, passed away twenty-eight years ago, but this volume contains the designs for all of the wooden toys he created during his lifetime. Marshall takes a low key, common sense approach to toy making, suggesting, for example, that they can be built with hand tools and a few handyman power tools, while noting that the addition of other power tools can facilitate the building. Similarly, he takes a scrounger's approach to materials relying not only on wood from the local home centre or lumberyard but also abandoned furniture, flea market finds and so on. Although on first glance, his toys look fairly simple, they are in fact quite sophisticated and require a fair degree of skill and talent to get them right. There's plenty of measuring, shaping, gluing, assembling and finishing to be done for each toy; enough to challenge the average beginner to intermediate woodworker. There are plans, pictures, instructions and materials lists for over fifty wooden toys, including a F16 jet fighter, the Spirit of St. Louis trans-Atlantic airplane, a working crane, a Model T car, and a train with various cars. I was pleased to see that since these toys are meant to be played with, the instructions have been updated to include the latest information on non-toxic materials and finishes. Although they are not designed exactly to scale, they do not exhibit the chunkiness of many wooden toys. These models have a sleek, contemporary look to them. If I have one reservation about the book, it's that the projects seem geared more towards boys than girls. Perhaps it's a reflection of the times when these toys were designed, but the majority of these toys would be traditionally considered 'boy's toys' (e.g. trains, planes, boats, cars, and industrial equipment). Nevertheless, the enduring popularity of wooden toys and these in particular is a testament to the fun that kids have playing with them and that adults have making them. Who doesn't love a good ol' wooden toy to play with? Norm Marshall's book, Great Book of Wooden Toys, provides a variety of plans for a number of vehicles for the air, land, and sea. Also included in the projects are some cute little animals that can be linked together. What I especially enjoyed with this book is the extensive amount of information in the Preface regarding wood selection, safety issue (for the children who will be enjoying these toys) and some basic "how to" information that is used for the projects. Being a relative beginner at woodworking I also appreciate the options that are provided throughout the pages. For example, he suggests that you can use his hole-saw process for making the wheels or you can cut them out freehand, use a lathe or even purchase them ready made. How's that for covering all the bases! This same "options" input is provided for a number of topics, including wood selection and finishes. Love it. Each of the projects comes with a picture of the finished toy, a little information about the vehicle, an exploded view of the components of the toy, as well as detailed plans for each of the parts. The step-by-step directions are quite detailed, giving tidbits of information, warnings, and strategies to prevent problems. It's nice to learn from experience but sometimes it is even better to learn from someone else's! Due to my current schedule I wasn't able to make one of the projects this month but it's on my "to do list." The Model T car is calling my name. I can't wait to add my version to those currently shared at LumberJocks.com. My Ratings of The Book Layout and Appearance: Good balance of pictures, diagrams, and words. Thumbs Up! Instructions: Easy to follow; precise plans. Thumbs Up! Project Selection: Air, land, sea; single items and toys that link together. Great combination. Thumbs Up! Overall: Thumbs Up!Table of ContentsForeword Preface: Making Toys Acknowledgments Model T Car Model T Truck Model T Tank Truck Bulldozer Road Grader Steamroller Crane Tractor Cab Cab-Over-Engine Low-Boy Trailer Flatbed Trailer Tank Trailer Biplane Spirit of St Louis P-40 Fighter F-16 Fighter Sternwheeler "The General" Steam Engine Tender Passenger Car Baggage Car Observation Car Train Whistle "Reading Work Train" Steam Engine Tender Crane Car Side Dump Car "Santa Fe" Diesel Locomotive Flatcar Gondola Car Boxcar Hopper Car Tank Car Caboose Modern Steam Locomotive Tender Greatest Show on Earth Basic Pull-Along Train Fancy Pull-Along Train
