  • Transaction Processing: Management of the Logical Database and its Underlying Physical Structure

Springer International Publishing AG Transaction Processing: Management of the Logical Database and its Underlying Physical Structure

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTransactions are a concept related to the logical database as seen from the perspective of database application programmers: a transaction is a sequence of database actions that is to be executed as an atomic unit of work. The processing of transactions on databases is a well- established area with many of its foundations having already been laid in the late 1970s and early 1980s.The unique feature of this textbook is that it bridges the gap between the theory of transactions on the logical database and the implementation of the related actions on the underlying physical database. The authors relate the logical database, which is composed of a dynamically changing set of data items with unique keys, and the underlying physical database with a set of fixed-size data and index pages on disk. Their treatment of transaction processing builds on the “do-redo-undo” recovery paradigm, and all methods and algorithms presented are carefully designed to be compatible with this paradigm as well as with write-ahead logging, steal-and-no-force buffering, and fine-grained concurrency control.Chapters 1 to 6 address the basics needed to fully appreciate transaction processing on a centralized database system within the context of our transaction model, covering topics like ACID properties, database integrity, buffering, rollbacks, isolation, and the interplay of logical locks and physical latches. Chapters 7 and 8 present advanced features including deadlock-free algorithms for reading, inserting and deleting tuples, while the remaining chapters cover additional advanced topics extending on the preceding foundational chapters, including multi-granular locking, bulk actions, versioning, distributed updates, and write-intensive transactions. This book is primarily intended as a text for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on database management in general or transaction processing in particular.Table of Contents1 Transactions on the Logical Database.- 2 Operations on the Physical Database.- 3 Logging and Buffering.- 4 Transaction Rollback and Restart Recovery.- 5 Transactional Isolation.- 6 Lock-Based Concurrency Control.- 7 B-Tree Traversals.- 8 B-Tree Structure Modifications.- 9 Advanced Locking Protocols.- 10 Bulk Operations on B-Trees.- 11 Online Index Construction and Maintenance.- 12 Concurrency Control by Versioning.- 13 Distributed Transactions.- 14 Transactions in Page-Server Systems.- 15 Processing of Write-Intensive Transactions.

Book SynopsisThis guide for practicing statisticians, data scientists, and R users and programmers will teach the essentials of preprocessing: data leveraging the R programming language to easily and quickly turn noisy data into usable pieces of information. Data wrangling, which is also commonly referred to as data munging, transformation, manipulation, janitor work, etc., can be a painstakingly laborious process. Roughly 80% of data analysis is spent on cleaning and preparing data; however, being a prerequisite to the rest of the data analysis workflow (visualization, analysis, reporting), it is essential that one become fluent and efficient in data wrangling techniques. This book will guide the user through the data wrangling process via a step-by-step tutorial approach and provide a solid foundation for working with data in R. The author's goal is to teach the user how to easily wrangle data in order to spend more time on understanding the content of the data. By the end of the book, the user will have learned: How to work with different types of data such as numerics, characters, regular expressions, factors, and dates The difference between different data structures and how to create, add additional components to, and subset each data structure How to acquire and parse data from locations previously inaccessible How to develop functions and use loop control structures to reduce code redundancy How to use pipe operators to simplify code and make it more readable How to reshape the layout of data and manipulate, summarize, and join data sets Table of Contents1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn a world of rapid and unpredictable change, the problem with strategic planning is that if you follow your plan through to the end, you will get exactly what you used to want. What you need is a framework for planning and implementing a strategy that is agile enough to adapt to a dynamic environment but focused enough to deliver. That framework is the Dynamic Balanced Scorecard. The original Balanced Scorecard system has proven the most popular, successful and enduring framework for strategy execution over the last 25 years. Comprising a Strategy Map and a scorecard of KPIs, targets and initiatives, the framework helped organizations distil a strategy into actionable components and measure progress towards a strategic vision, while also implementing and monitoring the actions that drove change. However, for all its success, the Balanced Scorecard system now needs to evolve for the digital age. Until now, building the system, rolling it out enterprise-wide and adapting it to external changes has been a lengthy process. While the fundamental principles of the system are still sound and relevant, it needs to become nimbler and more responsive. The book provides a step-by-step guide to agile strategy management: from formulation to implementation to learning and adapting. For each of the steps, the book explains how Dynamic Balanced Scorecards, fit for the digital age, are built and deployed.Table of Contents1 Digital Era Strategy Management: From planning to dynamic decision making 2 From Industrial to Digital-Era-based Strategies3 Agile Strategy Setting4 Strategy Mapping in Disruptive Times5 How to Build an Agile and Adaptive Balanced Scorecard6 Driving Rapid Enterprise Alignment7 Aligning the Financial and Operational Drivers of Strategic Success8 Developing Strategy-aligned Project Management Capabilities9 Unleashing the Power of Analytics for Strategic Learning and Adapting10 How to Ensure a Strategy-Aligned Leadership11 How to Ensure a Strategy-Aligned Culture12 Ensuring Employee Sense of Purpose in the Digital Era13 Further Developments, Driving Sustainable Value through Collaborative Strategy Maps and Scorecards14 Conclusion and 25 Key Strategic Questions

Book SynopsisThis book is about innovation, big data, and data science seen from a business perspective. Big data is a buzzword nowadays, and there is a growing necessity within practitioners to understand better the phenomenon, starting from a clear stated definition. This book aims to be a starting reading for executives who want (and need) to keep the pace with the technological breakthrough introduced by new analytical techniques and piles of data. Common myths about big data will be explained, and a series of different strategic approaches will be provided. By browsing the book, it will be possible to learn how to implement a big data strategy and how to use a maturity framework to monitor the progress of the data science team, as well as how to move forward from one stage to the next. Crucial challenges related to big data will be discussed, where some of them are more general - such as ethics, privacy, and ownership – while others concern more specific business situations (e.g., initial public offering, growth strategies, etc.). The important matter of selecting the right skills and people for an effective team will be extensively explained, and practical ways to recognize them and understanding their personalities will be provided. Finally, few relevant technological future trends will be acknowledged (i.e., IoT, Artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc.), especially for their close relation with the increasing amount of data and our ability to analyse them faster and more effectively.Trade Review“The book presents a new viewpoint to approach the big data concept that tries to distance itself from previous approaches. It introduces a consistent framework to handle and apply data strategies. … The book would be interesting reading for big data analysts or company managers because it discloses some important facets of this new technological challenge, although some subjects are quite hastily explained.” (Svetlana Segarceanu, Computing Reviews, April, 2017)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- What Data Science Means to the Business.- Key Data Challenges to Strategic Business Decisions.- A Chimera Called Data Scientist: Why they don’t Exist (but they will in the Future).- Future Data Trends.- Where are we Going? • Cinderella's Stick: A Fairy Tale for Digital

Springer International Publishing AG Cinderella's Stick: A Fairy Tale for Digital

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explains the main problems related to digital preservation using examples based on a modern version of the well-known Cinderella fairy tale. Digital preservation is the endeavor to protect digital material against loss, corruption, hardware/software technology changes, and changes in the knowledge of the community.Τhe structure of the book is modular, with each chapter consisting of two parts: the episode and the technical background. The episodes narrate the story in chronological order, exactly as in a fairy tale. In addition to the story itself, each episode is related to one or more digital preservation problems, which are discussed in the technical background section of the chapter. To reveal a more general and abstract formulation of these problems, the notion of pattern is used. Each pattern has a name, a summary of the problem, a narrative describing an attempt to solve the problem, an explanation of what could have been done to avoid or alleviate this problem, some lessons learned, and lastly, links to related patterns discussed in other chapters. The book is intended for anyone wanting to understand the problems related to digital preservation, even if they lack the technical background. It explains the technical details at an introductory level, provides references to the main approaches (or solutions) currently available for tackling related problems, and is rounded out by questions and exercises appropriate for computer engineers and scientists. In addition, the book's website, maintained by the authors, presents the contents of Cinderella's “real USB stick,” and includes links to various tools and updates.Trade Review“‘Cinderella’s Stick’ is an excellent book for all readers in research libraries. It provides the right concepts in a very smart and innovative way, and it underlines that the amount of digital information that we alone produce is immense and the challenges of fragility are here to stay.” (Giannis Tsakonas, Liber Quarterly, Vol. 29(1), 2019)Table of Contents1 A Few Words About Digital Preservation And Book Overview.- 2 The Fairy Tale Of Cinderella.- 3 Daphne (A Modern Cinderella).- 4 Reading the Contents of the USB Stick.- 5 First Contact with the Contents of the USB Stick.- 6 The File Poem.html: On Reading Characters.- 7 The File MyPlace.png: On Getting the Provenance of a Digital Object.- 8 The File todo.csv – On Understanding Data Values.- 9 The File destroyAll.exe: On Executing Proprietary Software.- 10 The File Mymusic.class: On Decompiling Software.- 11 The File yyy.java: On Compiling And Running Software.- 12 The File myFriendsBook.war: On Running Web Applications.- 13 The File roulette.BAS: On Running Obsolete Software.- 14 The Folder myExperiment: On Verifying and Reproducing Data.- 15 The File MyContacts.con: On Reading Unknown Digital Resources.- 16 The File SecretMeeting.Txt: On Authenticity Checking.- 17 The Personal Archive Of Robert: On Preservation Planning.- 18 The Meta-Pattern: Toward a Common Umbrella.- 19 How Robert Eventually Found Daphne.- 20 Daphne’s Dream.- 21 Epilogue.

Book SynopsisAlgorithms are at the heart of every nontrivial computer application, and algorithmics is a modern and active area of computer science. Every computer scientist and every professional programmer should know about the basic algorithmic toolbox: structures that allow efficient organization and retrieval of data, frequently used algorithms, and basic techniques for modeling, understanding and solving algorithmic problems. This book is a concise introduction addressed to students and professionals familiar with programming and basic mathematical language. Individual chapters cover arrays and linked lists, hash tables and associative arrays, sorting and selection, priority queues, sorted sequences, graph representation, graph traversal, shortest paths, minimum spanning trees, and optimization. The algorithms are presented in a modern way, with explicitly formulated invariants, and comment on recent trends such as algorithm engineering, memory hierarchies, algorithm libraries and certifying algorithms. The authors use pictures, words and high-level pseudocode to explain the algorithms, and then they present more detail on efficient implementations using real programming languages like C++ and Java. The authors have extensive experience teaching these subjects to undergraduates and graduates, and they offer a clear presentation, with examples, pictures, informal explanations, exercises, and some linkage to the real world. Most chapters have the same basic structure: a motivation for the problem, comments on the most important applications, and then simple solutions presented as informally as possible and as formally as necessary. For the more advanced issues, this approach leads to a more mathematical treatment, including some theorems and proofs. Finally, each chapter concludes with a section on further findings, providing views on the state of research, generalizations and advanced solutions.Trade Review"This is another mainstream textbook on algorithms and data structures, mainly intended for undergraduate students and professionals … . The two-layer index table is also detailed and helpful. I do enjoy reading the informative sections of historical notes and further findings at the end of each chapter. … This book is very well written, with the help of … clear figures and tables, as well as many interesting and inspiring examples." Zhizhang Shen, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1146, 2008"... the book develops the basic fundamental principles underlying their design and analysis without sacrificing depth or rigor. The authors' insight, knowledge and active research on algorithms and data structures provide a very solid approach to the book. I particularly liked their "as informally as possible and as formally as necessary" writing style, and I enjoyed a lot their decision to not only discuss classical results, but to broaden the view to alternative implementations, memory hierarchies and libraries, which transmits novelty and increases interest...I think that this book will be a superb addition particularly useful for teachers of undergraduate courses, to graduate students in Computer Science, and to researchers that work, or intend to work, with algorithms." Jordi Petit, Computer Science Review 3, 2009 "Mehlhorn and Sanders write well, and the well-organized presentation reflects their experience and interest in the various topics... it is an excellent reference, and could possibly be used in a transition course, serving students coming to graduate CS courses from other technical fields. [...]This text is intended for undergraduate computer science (CS) majors, and focuses on algorithm analysis. … it is an excellent reference, and could possibly be used in a transition course, serving students coming to graduate CS courses from other technical fields. Finally, the book contains interesting tidbits that are not readily available elsewhere." M. G. Murphy, ACM Computing Reviews, October 2008"A 'Toolbox' should be portable, practical, and useful. This book is all these, covering a nice swath of the classic CS algorithms but addressing them in a way that is accessible to the student and practitioner. Furthermore, it manages to incorporate interesting examples as well as subtle examples of wit compressed into its 300 pages. Although it is not tied to any one language or library, it provides practical references to efficient open-source implementations of many of the algorithms and data structures; these should be the first refuge of the commercial developer. I can easily recommend this book as an intermediate undergraduate text, a refresher for those of us who only dimly remember our intermediate undergraduate courses, and as a reference for the professional development craftsman."
