Book SynopsisThe Last Great American Picture Show brings together essays by scholars and writers who chart the changing evaluations of the American cinema of the 1970s, sometimes referred to as the decade of the lost generation, but now more and more recognized as the first New Hollywood, without which the cinema of Francis Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Tim Burton or Quentin Tarantino could not have come into existence.Identified with directors such as Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, Peter Bogdanovich, Monte Hellman, Bob Rafelson, Hal Ashby, Robert Altman and James Toback, American cinema of the 1970s is long overdue for this re-evaluation. Many of the films have not only come back from oblivion, as the benchmark for new directorial talents. They have also become cult films in the video shops and the classics of film courses all over the world.Table of ContentsTable of Contents - 6 Part One Introductions - 8 The Impure Cinema: New Hollywood 1967-1976 - 10 ”The Last Good Time We Ever Had”: Remembering the New Hollywood Cinema - 20 American Auteur Cinema: The Last – or First – Great Picture Show - 38 Part Two Histories - 72 The Decade When Movies Mattered - 74 A Walking Contradiction (Partly Truth and Partly Fiction) - 84 The Exploitation Generation. or: How Marginal Movies Came in from the Cold - 108 New Hollywood and the Sixties Melting Pot - 132 Part Three People and Places - 154 Dinosaurs in the Age of the Cinemobile - 156 ”The Cylinders Were Whispering My Name”: The Films of Monte Hellman - 166 Nashville contra Jaws, or “The Imagination of Disaster” Revisited - 196 For Wanda - 224 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere: The Uneasy Ride of Hollywood and Rock - 250 Auteurism and War-teurism: Terrence Malick’s War Movie - 268 Part Four Critical Debates - 278 The Pathos of Failure: American Films in the 1970s: Notes on the Unmotivated Hero [1975] - 280 Trapped in the Affection Image: Hollywood’s Post-traumatic Cycle (1970-1976) - 294 Grim Fascination: Fingers, James Toback and 1970s American Cinema - 310 Allegories of Post-Fordism in 1970s New Hollywood: Countercultural Combat Films, Conspiracy Thrillers as Genre Recycling - 334 Bibliography - 360 List of Contributors - 372 Pictures (with credits) - 376 Index of Film Titles - 378

Taylor & Francis Ltd What's So Funny?: Sketches from My Life

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIllustrated by Lotte Goslar herself, this extraordinary book provides, through her vivid sketch-like texts, a moving and humorous account of her life during a traumatic period in world history. Her acute observations of daily human foibles and vanities are interspersed with her interactions with major figures (Palucca, Voskovec and Werich, Brecht, Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester, Hans Sahl, and Marilyn Monroe), revealing to the reader the world of a great artist in movement and mime. What's So Funny? includes texts by Horst Koegler, Voskovec and Werich, Joel Schechter, and Bertolt Brecht.Trade Review"Her name is Goslar, but she was born in Dresden. She wanted to become a dancer and studied with Palucca, but she became a mime and a clown and created for herself her own form that she called 'Pantomime Circus'. Amsterdam University Press Building Musical Culture in Nineteenth-Century

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhen people attend classical music concerts today, they sit and listen in silence, offering no audible reactions to what they're hearing. We think of that as normal-but, as Darryl Cressman shows in this book, it's the product of a long history of interrelationships between music, social norms, and technology. Using the example of Amsterdam's Concertgebouw in the nineteenth century, Cressman shows how its design was in part intended to help discipline and educate concert audiences to listen attentively - and analysis of its creation and use offers rich insights into sound studies, media history, science and technology studies, classical music, and much more.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements Chapter One: The Concert Hall as a Medium of Musical Culture Chapter Two: Listening, Attentive Listening, and Musical Meaning Chapter Three: Patronage, Class, and Buildings for Music: Aristocratic Opera Houses and Bourgeois Concert Halls Chapter Four: Acoustic Architecture Before Science: Designing the Sound of the Concertgebouw Chapter Five: Frisia Non Cantat: The Unmusicality of the Dutch Chapter Six: Listening to Media History References Index

Book SynopsisThe book attempts to trace an overview of the different components that define the cultural landscape of the state of Odisha in relation to its history, religious cults, art, and literature and to link the development of the various aspects to the role played over the centuries by the Geeta Govinda poem in its different manifestations. From being an important component of the rituals performed in the Jagannath Temple to becoming an essential part of the people's daily lives and artistic expressions, this immortal poem has exercised its influence on the cultural landscape of the state from its early inception in the twelfth century until present times. Religious beliefs, visual representations, performative expressions, and literary compositions have been influenced by the strong emotional appeal contained in its verses.

  • Dance as Intermedial Translation

Leuven University Press Dance as Intermedial Translation

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisInnovative perspective to the meaningful import of body and materiality in the translation process, a focal point of recent literature in Translation StudiesThis book is situated in the breach opened up by recent debates on inherited notions of text, language, and translation that followed the emergence of new technologies. It examines two works of contemporary dance, Marie Chouinard's Jérôme Bosch: Le Jardin des Délices (2016) and Mathieu Geffré's Froth on the Daydream (2018), as examples of intermedial translation. Conceptualising translation through the lens of theatrical dance allows us to see the translation process as a creative, corporeal, and political practice of negotiating human and non-human agencies, deeply intertwined with issues of memory and struggles over representation. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical debates from translation theory, dance studies, cultural theory, gender studies, postcolonialism, art history, cognitive linguistics, multimodality, film studies, and memory studies, as well as on concrete examples of performative works, the book charts a course for the development of dance translation as a legitimate, if still under-researched, subfield of translation studies. With free digital appendicesThis publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content). This book will be made open access within three years of publication thanks to Path to Open, a program developed in partnership between JSTOR, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), University of Michigan Press, and The University of North Carolina Press to bring about equitable access and impact for the entire scholarly community, including authors, researchers, libraries, and university presses around the world. 15 in stock

Book Synopsis“Ballet inspires me. Human beings have the capacity to express themselves through many art forms, but when it comes to dance – and especially classical modern ballet – I am always amazed by that unbelievably elevated form of expression. It’s so precise and so incredibly skilled; I admire that enormously.” — Photographer and filmmaker Erwin Olaf “The fact that the photographer is looking through the camera lens means they have a different perspective from looking directly at the figure. That is voyeuristic. The camera can do something that the audience member can’t: zooming in for a close-up.” — Choreographer Hans van Manen The grand master of Dutch dance, Hans van Manen, celebrates his 90th birthday this year. That has given rise to international celebrations by leading ballet companies with the Hans van Manen festival from 8 to 29 June 2022, the exclusive publication Dance in Close-Up and the exhibition of the same name in Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam from 19 June to 17 July 2022. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Hans van Manen was not only one of the world’s leading choreographers, but also an internationally acclaimed photographer. It was during this period that the then very young photographer Erwin Olaf met the famed artist, who immediately took him under his wing and introduced him to the world of the visual arts and studio photography. This book celebrates their 40 years of friendship, with a photo series in which Van Manen directs moments from his choreographic career, recorded with the utmost precision by Erwin Olaf. With text contributions from the authors Nina Siegal and Michael James Gardner.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisJamaica’s rich culture is known the world over; and every aspect of this culture has been influenced by Jamaica’s African heritage. From speech to dress, and spirituality to dance, from food to folklore and from music to art and religion, African retentions from the time of slavery have become more than preserved aspects of Jamaica’s past; African traditions have become part and parcel of Jamaican culture. In this Reader, Coester and Bender have compiled some of the most important ethnographic work by noted researchers which, although previously published, have been exceptionally difficult to access by the growing community of scholars of African-Caribbean and Jamaican studies. Several seminal articles on aspects of African-Jamaican culture are included in this rich and valuable collection that describes and analyses the elements that make up a distinctive African-Jamaican ethos.
