    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe object of the present work is to develop a method for a structural analysis of European chain and round dance patterns with a view to establishing a categorisation of these dances according to their basic step patterns. This attempt has never been made before as surprisingly few works have been published on this subject. The first of the three volumes contains an introduction to chain and round dances in Europe and describes the collected data used for the analysis. The second volume explains how to read the catalogues and presents the groupings of the material. The third volume contains the complete material as tables and examples. The study concludes that a series of main categories can be established on the basis of the theoretical models suggested here.

  • Dance Spaces: Practices of Movement

University Press of Southern Denmark Dance Spaces: Practices of Movement

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book takes as its point of departure diverse conventions of and perspectives on practices and discourses in dance. The anthology is strongly motivated by the fact that space continues to be explored and debated within dance practices and studies as well as the human sciences more generally. Yet, there are still only few publications offering a contemporary view on how the relation between movement and space can be tied to the descriptions and analyses of actual movement practice. Already owing to its embodied nature, dance is essentially spatial. It forms, produces, and takes place in space. It is thus no coincidence that dance studies have increasingly begun to address the complex issue of movement and space. This anthology aims to link conceptual descriptions that concern space as process and in process to the undertakings of specific movement practices in dance. The articles in the anthology address how historical and geopolitical influences impact our understanding and practice of dance art. In them, the kinds of spaces and interrelationships, which different forms of dancing generate, are considered. Aspects of embodied space that dancing relies upon are likewise discussed. Through case examples, the articles take a closer look on how recent artistic practice in dance utilises given environments and constructs space.

  • Performing the Arts of Indonesia: Malay Identity

NIAS Press Performing the Arts of Indonesia: Malay Identity

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe 2,408 islands of Indonesia's Kepri (Kepulauan Riau or Riau Islands) province are said to be `sprinkled like a shake of pepper' across the Straits of Melaka and South China Sea. For two millennia until colonial times, they were part of the `maritime silk road' between China and Southeast, South and West Asia. Kepri's two million inhabitants thus share a seafaring worldview that is reflected in their traditions and daily life, and is expressed most commonly in the performing arts of its largest and smallest population groups, the Kepri Malays and the formerly nomadic Orang Suku Laut (People of the Sea) respectively. In recent decades, Kepri also has become home to large numbers of immigrants from other parts of Indonesia, some of whom practise the Malay as well as their own ethnic arts. Despite its close proximity to Singapore, this is a little-known world, one brought to life in a fascinating and innovative study. Grounded in extensive fieldwork, the volume explores not only the islands' iconic Malay (Melayu) performing arts - music, poetry, dance, martial arts, bardic arts, theatre and ritual - but also issues of space and place, local identity and popular memory. Generously illustrated and with a companion website presenting related audio-visual material, Performing the Arts of Indonesia will be an essential resource for anyone interested in this fascinating region.

The collection is a model of inter-disciplinary research and will be an essential resource for studies of island Southeast Asia. • The Magic Nut: A Prologue to the Nutcracker

Skira The Magic Nut: A Prologue to the Nutcracker

Book SynopsisMulti-disciplined artist Mihail Chemiakin's exquisitely drawn costume sketches, stage sets and production design come to life in this extraordinary record of the two-act ballet premiered in St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater in 2005. Based on "The Story of a Hard Nut" from the Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann, "The Magic Nut" is a ballet conceived by artist Mihail Chemiakin as a prologue to "The Nutcracker" in which we learn how the Nutcracker comes to be. Here Chemiakin tells the story of The Nutcracker's origins creating a fairy tale with a cast of bird-people, sea monsters, satyrs, cats, jellyfish, and, of course, a whole society of rats. In this phantasmagorical interpretation of Hoffman's tale the audience discovers the kind and heroic qualities of young Drosselmeyer, fated to be turned into a Nutcracker for his virtuous deeds. The story contains many of the elements of the classic fairy tale but the anticipated happy ending is ultimately postponed - until the story continues in the Tchaikovsky ballet. The book leads the reader through the ballet, scene by scene, with detailed sketches of the sets, costumes, masks and props created for the production. A virtuoso of invention, of expression through color and unexpected interpretation, the work of Chemiakin could not be better fitted to fairytales. Humorous and engaging, the colorful drawings featured here will delight ballet fans, costume designers, students of theater and art lovers alike.

Book SynopsisThe Last Great American Picture Show brings together essays by scholars and writers who chart the changing evaluations of the American cinema of the 1970s, sometimes referred to as the decade of the lost generation, but now more and more recognized as the first New Hollywood, without which the cinema of Francis Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Tim Burton or Quentin Tarantino could not have come into existence.Identified with directors such as Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, Peter Bogdanovich, Monte Hellman, Bob Rafelson, Hal Ashby, Robert Altman and James Toback, American cinema of the 1970s is long overdue for this re-evaluation. Book SynopsisJamaica’s rich culture is known the world over; and every aspect of this culture has been influenced by Jamaica’s African heritage. From speech to dress, and spirituality to dance, from food to folklore and from music to art and religion, African retentions from the time of slavery have become more than preserved aspects of Jamaica’s past; African traditions have become part and parcel of Jamaican culture. In this Reader, Coester and Bender have compiled some of the most important ethnographic work by noted researchers which, although previously published, have been exceptionally difficult to access by the growing community of scholars of African-Caribbean and Jamaican studies. Several seminal articles on aspects of African-Jamaican culture are included in this rich and valuable collection that describes and analyses the elements that make up a distinctive African-Jamaican ethos.

Book SynopsisThis book draws on theories of aesthetics, post-colonialism, multiculturalism and transnationalism to explore salient aspects of perpetuating traditional dance customs in diaspora. It is the first book to present a broad-ranging analysis of cultural dance in Australia. Topics include adaptation of dance customs within a post-migration context, multicultural festivals, prominent performers, historiographies and archives, and the relative positionings of cultural and Western theatrical dance genres. The book offers a decolonized appraisal of dance in Australia, critiquing past and present praxes and offering suggestions for the future. Overall, it underscores the highly variegated nature of the Australian dance landscape and advocates for greater recognition of amateur community dance practices. Cultural Dance in Australia makes a substantial contribution to the catalogue of work about immigrants and cultural dance styles that continue to be preserved in Australia.
