    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to provide a well-structured and coherent overview of existing mathematical modeling approaches for biochemical reaction systems, investigating relations between both the conventional models and several types of deterministic-stochastic hybrid model recombinations. Another main objective is to illustrate and compare diverse numerical simulation schemes and their computational effort. Unlike related works, this book presents a broad scope in its applications, from offering a detailed introduction to hybrid approaches for the case of multiple population scales to discussing the setting of time-scale separation resulting from widely varying firing rates of reaction channels. Additionally, it also addresses modeling approaches for non well-mixed reaction-diffusion dynamics, including deterministic and stochastic PDEs and spatiotemporal master equations. Finally, by translating and incorporating complex theory to a level accessible to non-mathematicians, this book effectively bridges the gap between mathematical research in computational biology and its practical use in biological, biochemical, and biomedical systems.Trade Review“The primary audience is graduate students and researchers. … content would have to be selected and formatted for lectures carefully. It is most suitable for independent study, and is especially useful as a reference text for the foundations of techniques used in current research. The choice of references are excellent and very current: it is a good survey of both the relevant foundations and current state of research … and would be a useful starting point for a literature review.” (Chay Paterson, zbMATH 1467.92005, 2021)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Well-mixed stochastic reaction kinetics.- Population scaling.- Temporal scaling.- Spatial scaling.- Summary and Outlook.- Mathematical background.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis textbook is designed for a one year course covering the fundamentals of partial differential equations, geared towards advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in mathematics, science, engineering, and elsewhere. The exposition carefully balances solution techniques, mathematical rigor, and significant applications, all illustrated by numerous examples. Extensive exercise sets appear at the end of almost every subsection, and include straightforward computational problems to develop and reinforce new techniques and results, details on theoretical developments and proofs, challenging projects both computational and conceptual, and supplementary material that motivates the student to delve further into the subject. No previous experience with the subject of partial differential equations or Fourier theory is assumed, the main prerequisites being undergraduate calculus, both one- and multi-variable, ordinary differential equations, and basic linear algebra. While the classical topics of separation of variables, Fourier analysis, boundary value problems, Green's functions, and special functions continue to form the core of an introductory course, the inclusion of nonlinear equations, shock wave dynamics, symmetry and similarity, the Maximum Principle, financial models, dispersion and solutions, Huygens' Principle, quantum mechanical systems, and more make this text well attuned to recent developments and trends in this active field of contemporary research. Numerical approximation schemes are an important component of any introductory course, and the text covers the two most basic approaches: finite differences and finite elements.Trade Review“This textbook furnishes the basis for a 1-year introductory course in partial differential equations for advanced undergraduates. … The book is written with great care and great attention to detail throughout. At the end of every chapter there are well-chosen exercises that genuinely add depth to the concepts treated in the text. … this book can be wholeheartedly recommended.” (M. Kunzinger, Monatshefte für Mathematik, Vol. 181, 2016)“This book easily covers all the material one might want in a course aimed at first-time students of PDEs. … I recommend this one highly: It provides the best first-course introduction to a vast and ever-more relevant and active area. Students, and perhaps instructors too, will learn much from it. If they wish to go beyond the material taught in a first course, this text will prepare them better than any other I know.” (SIAM Review, Vol. 56 (3), September, 2014)“Introduction to Partial Differential Equations is a complete, well-written textbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. Olver … thoroughly covers the topic in a readable format and includes plenty of examples and exercises, ranging from the typical to independent projects and computer projects. … Instructors teaching an introduction to partial differential equations course will want to consider this textbook as a viable option for their students. Summing Up: Highly Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty.” (S. L. Sullivan, Choice, Vol. 51 (11), July, 2014)“This introduction to partial differential equations is addressed to advanced undergraduates or graduate students … . an imposing book that includes plenty of material for two semesters even at the graduate level. … The author succeeds at maintaining a good balance between solution methods, mathematical rigor, and applications. With appropriate selection of topics this could serve for a one semester introductory course for undergraduates or a full year course for graduate students. … the author has clearly taken pains to make it readable and accessible.” (William J. Satzer, MAA Reviews, January, 2014)Table of ContentsWhat are Partial Differential Equations?.- Linear and Nonlinear Waves.- Fourier Series.- Separation of Variables.- Finite Differences.- Generalized Functions and Green’s Functions.- Complex Analysis and Conformal Mapping.- Fourier Transforms.- Linear and Nonlinear Evolution Equations.- A General Framework for Linear Partial Differential Equations.- Finite Elements and Weak Solutions.- Dynamics of Planar Media.- Partial Differential Equations in Space.

  • Springer International Publishing AG Reductionism, Emergence and Levels of Reality: The Importance of Being Borderline

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisScientists have always attempted to explain the world in terms of a few unifying principles. In the fifth century B.C. Democritus boldly claimed that reality is simply a collection of indivisible and eternal parts or atoms. Over the centuries his doctrine has remained a landmark, and much progress in physics is due to its distinction between subjective perception and objective reality. This book discusses theory reduction in physics, which states that the whole is nothing more than the sum of its parts: the properties of things are directly determined by their constituent parts. Reductionism deals with the relation between different theories that address different levels of reality, and uses extrapolations to apply that relation in different sciences. Reality shows a complex structure of connections, and the dream of a unified interpretation of all phenomena in several simple laws continues to attract anyone with genuine philosophical and scientific interests. If the most radical reductionist point of view is correct, the relationship between disciplines is strictly inclusive: chemistry becomes physics, biology becomes chemistry, and so on. Eventually, only one science, indeed just a single theory, would survive, with all others merging in the Theory of Everything. Is the current coexistence of different sciences a mere historical venture which will end when the Theory of Everything has been established? Can there be a unified description of nature? Rather than an analysis of full reductionism, this book focuses on aspects of theory reduction in physics and stimulates reflection on related questions: is there any evidence of actual reduction? Book SynopsisThis book covers the major problems of turbulence and turbulent processes, including physical phenomena, their modeling and their simulation. After a general introduction in Chapter 1 illustrating many aspects dealing with turbulent flows, averaged equations and kinetic energy budgets are provided in Chapter 2. The concept of turbulent viscosity as a closure of the Reynolds stress is also introduced. Wall-bounded flows are presented in Chapter 3 and aspects specific to boundary layers and channel or pipe flows are also pointed out. Free shear flows, namely free jets and wakes, are considered in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 deals with vortex dynamics. Homogeneous turbulence, isotropy and dynamics of isotropic turbulence are presented in Chapters 6 and 7. Turbulence is then described both in the physical space and in the wave number space. Time dependent numerical simulations are presented in Chapter 8, where an introduction to large eddy simulation is offered. The last three chapters of the book summarize remarkable digital techniques current and experimental. Many results are presented in a practical way, based on both experiments and numerical simulations. The book is written for a advanced engineering students as well as postgraduate engineers and researchers. For students, it contains the essential results as well as details and demonstrations whose oral transmission is often tedious. At a more advanced level, the text provides numerous references which allow readers to find quickly further study regarding their work and to acquire a deeper knowledge on topics of interest.Table of Contents Introduction to turbulence.- Statistical description of turbulent flows.- Wall-bounded turbulent flows.- Free turbulent flows: jets and wakes.- Vortex dynamics.- Homogeneous and isotropic turbulence.- The dynamics of isotropic turbulence.- Direct and large eddy simulation of turbulent flows.- Turbulence models.- Experimental methods.

Book SynopsisHalf a century ago, S. Chandrasekhar wrote these words in the preface to his l celebrated and successful book: In this monograph an attempt has been made to present the theory of stellar dy namics as a branch of classical dynamics - a discipline in the same general category as celestial mechanics. [ ... J Indeed, several of the problems of modern stellar dy namical theory are so severely classical that it is difficult to believe that they are not already discussed, for example, in Jacobi's Vorlesungen. Since then, stellar dynamics has developed in several directions and at var ious levels, basically three viewpoints remaining from which to look at the problems encountered in the interpretation of the phenomenology. Roughly speaking, we can say that a stellar system (cluster, galaxy, etc.) can be con sidered from the point of view of celestial mechanics (the N-body problem with N » 1), fluid mechanics (the system is represented by a material con tinuum), or statistical mechanics (one defines a distribution function for the positions and the states of motion of the components of the system).Trade ReviewFrom the reviews "The book is ... didactically written and contains topics from classical to most modern ones, treated rigorously by indicating where complete proofs are to be found."Zentralblatt für Mathematik, 1999Table of Contents— The Theory of Orbits from Epicycles to “Chaos”.- 1. Book SynopsisThe present third edition of The Statistical Mechanics of Financial Markets is published only four years after the ?rst edition. The success of the book highlights the interest in a summary of the broad research activities on the application of statistical physics to ?nancial markets. I am very grateful to readers and reviewers for their positive reception and comments. Why then prepare a new edition instead of only reprinting and correcting the second edition? The new edition has been signi?cantly expanded, giving it a more pr- tical twist towards banking. The most important extensions are due to my practical experience as a risk manager in the German Savings Banks’ As- ciation (DSGV): Two new chapters on risk management and on the closely related topic of economic and regulatory capital for ?nancial institutions, - spectively, have been added. The chapter on risk management contains both the basics as well as advanced topics, e. g. coherent risk measures, which have not yet reached the statistical physics community interested in ?nancial m- kets. Similarly, it is surprising how little research by academic physicists has appeared on topics relating to Basel II. Basel II is the new capital adequacy framework which will set the standards in risk management in many co- tries for the years to come. Basel II is responsible for many job openings in banks for which physicists are extemely well quali?ed. For these reasons, an outline of Basel II takes a major part of the chapter on capital.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the third edition: "An excellent job of integrating many of the most important themes from econophysics in a relatively small volume. … The book serves its purpose, as a textbook on econophysics, superbly and one can tell that it developed from a course of lectures. The book is written with extreme clarity and an excellent pedagogical style. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe widespread interest this book has found among professors, scientists and stu dents working in a variety of fields has made a new edition necessary. I have used this opportunity to add three new chapters on recent developments. One of the most fascinating fields of modern science is cognitive science which has become a meet ing place of many disciplines ranging from mathematics over physics and computer science to psychology. Here, one of the important links between these fields is the concept of information which, however, appears in various disguises, be it as Shan non information or as semantic information (or as something still different). So far, meaning seemed to be exorcised from Shannon information, whereas meaning plays a central role in semantic (or as it is sometimes called "pragmatic") information. In the new chapter 13 it will be shown, however, that there is an important interplay between Shannon and semantic information and that, in particular, the latter plays a decisive role in the fixation of Shannon information and, in cognitive processes, al lows a drastic reduction of that information. A second, equally fascinating and rapidly developing field for mathematicians, computer scientists and physicists is quantum information and quantum computa tion. The inclusion of these topics is a must for any modern treatise dealing with in formation. It becomes more and more evident that the abstract concept of informa tion is inseparably tied up with its realizations in the physical world.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the third edition: "This enlarged edition of Information and Self-Organization addresses the concept of information in depth: ranging ‘from Shannon information, from which all semantics has been exorcised, to the effects of information on receivers and the self-creation of meaning’—that is, toward semantic information … . Nevertheless, both the qualitative lessons and quantitative analysis presented in the book … very useful for artificial life researchers." Book SynopsisThis book is an often-requested reprint of two classic texts by H. Haken: "Synergetics. An Introduction" and "Advanced Synergetics". Synergetics, an interdisciplinary research program initiated by H. Haken in 1969, deals with the systematic and methodological approach to the rapidly growing field of complexity. Going well beyond qualitative analogies between complex systems in fields as diverse as physics, chemistry, biology, sociology and economics, Synergetics uses tools from theoretical physics and mathematics to construct an unifying framework within which quantitative descriptions of complex, self-organizing systems can be made. This may well explain the timelessness of H. Haken's original texts on this topic, which are now recognized as landmarks in the field of complex systems. They provide both the beginning graduate student and the seasoned researcher with solid knowledge of the basic concepts and mathematical tools. Moreover, they admirably convey the spirit of the pioneering work by the founder of Synergetics through the essential applications contained herein that have lost nothing of their paradigmatic character since they were conceived.Table of ContentsAn Introduction.- Advanced Topics.
