Curriculum planning and development Books
Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Curriculum Foundations Reader
Book SynopsisThis book brings readers into classrooms and communities to explore critical curriculum issues in the United States throughout the twentieth century by focusing in on the voices of teachers, administrators, students, and families. Framed by an enduring question about curriculum, each chapter begins with an essay briefly reviewing the history of topics such as student resistance, sociopolitical and culturally-centered curricula, curriculum choice, the place and space of curriculum, linguistic policies for sustaining cultural heritages, and grading and assessment. Multiple archival sources follow each essay, which allow readers to directly engage with educators and others in the past. This promotes an in-depth historical analysis of contemporary issues on teaching for social justice in the fields of curriculum studies and curriculum history. As such, this book considers educators in the past—their struggles, successes, and daily work—to help current teachers develop more historically conscious practices in formal and informal education settings. Table of Contents1. Introduction: Exploring the Enduring Questions of Curriculum in Context2. Where Do Teaching and Learning Happen?3. Who is Excluded? Who is Empowered? Book SynopsisThis edited volume, now in its second edition, brings together the some of the most important figures in the evolution of Critical Pedagogy and a number of up-and-coming scholars. Together they provide comprehensive analyses related to the struggles against the triangulation of Neoliberalism, Conservatism, and Nationalism, not just in education but in all of social life, through the democratizing forces of critical pedagogy. Its re-release coincides with the 50th anniversary of the publication of Paulo Freire’s landmark publication, Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The second edition has been updated with a majority of new chapters to address the current political shifts that have hastened erosion of the public sphere and public education today. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Reliability and Validity of International
Book SynopsisThis open access book describes and reviews the development of the quality control mechanisms and methodologies associated with IEA’s extensive program of educational research. A group of renowned international researchers, directly involved in the design and execution of IEA’s international large-scale assessments (ILSAs), describe the operational and quality control procedures that are employed to address the challenges associated with providing high-quality, comparable data. Throughout the now considerable history of IEA’s international large-scale assessments, establishing the quality of the data has been paramount. Research in the complex multinational context in which IEA studies operate imposes significant burdens and challenges in terms of the methodologies and technologies that have been developed to achieve the stated study goals. The demands of the twin imperatives of validity and reliability must be satisfied in the context of multiple and diverse cultures, languages, orthographies, educational structures, educational histories, and traditions. Readers will learn about IEA’s approach to such challenges, and the methods used to ensure that the quality of the data provided to policymakers and researchers can be trusted. An often neglected area of investigation, namely the consequential validity of ILSAs, is also explored, examining issues related to reporting, dissemination, and impact, including discussion of the limits of interpretation. The final chapters address the question of the influence of ILSAs on policy and reform in education, including a case study from Singapore, a country known for its outstanding levels of achievement, but which nevertheless seeks the means of continual improvement, illustrating best practice use of ILSA data.Table of ContentsForeword; Dirk Hastedt.- 1 Introduction to Reliability and Validity of International Large-Scale Assessment; Hans Wagemaker.- 2 Study Design and Evolution, and the Imperatives of Reliability and Validity; Hans Wagemaker.- 3 Framework Development in International Large-Scale Assessment Studies; John Ainley and Wolfram Schulz.- 4 Assessment Content Development; Liz Twist and Julian Fraillon.- 5 Questionnaire Development in International Large-Scale Assessment Studies; Wolfram Schulz and Ralph Carstens.- 6 Translation: The Preparation of National Language Versions of Assessment Instruments; Paula Korsnakova, Steve Dept, and David Ebbs.- 7 Sampling, Weighting, and Variance Estimation; Sabine Meinck.- 8 Quality Control during Data Collection: Refining for Rigor; Lauren Musu, Sandra Dohr, and Andrea Netten.- 9 Post-collection Data Capture, Processing, and Scoring; Alena Becker.- 10 Technology and Assessment; Heiko Sibberns.- 11 Ensuring Validity in International Comparisons Using State-of-the-art Psychometric Methodologies; Matthias von Davier, Eugene Gonzalez, and Wolfram Schulz.- 12 Publishing and Dissemination; Seamus Hegarty and Sive Finlay.- 13 Consequential Validity: Data Access, Data Use, Analytical Support, and Training; Sabine Meinck, Eugene Gonzalez, and Hans Wagemaker.- 14 Using IEA Studies to Inform Policymaking and Program Development: The Case of Singapore; Hui Leng Ng, Chew Leng Poon, and Elizabeth Pang.- 15 Understanding the Policy Influence of International Large-Scale Assessments in Education; David Rutkowski, Greg Thompson, and Leslie Rutkowski.-

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Discourses of Globalisation and Higher Education
Book SynopsisThis book examines some of the major higher education reforms and policy shifts globally, particularly in the light of recent shifts in quality and standards-driven education and policy research. It critiques the neo-liberal ideological imperatives of current higher education and policy reforms, and illustrates the way that changes in the relationship between the state and higher education policy affect current trends in higher education reforms. Using diverse comparative education paradigms from critical theory to historical-comparative research, the chapters focus on globalisation, ideology and higher education reforms and examine both the reasons and outcomes of higher education reforms and policy change. The book analyses and evaluates the policy shifts in methodological approaches to globalisation and higher education reforms, and their impact on education policy and pedagogy. The book contributes in a very scholarly way, to a more holistic understanding of the nexus between globalisation, comparative education research and higher education reforms.Table of Contents

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Diversity and Decolonization in French Studies:
Book SynopsisThis edited volume presents new and original approaches to teaching the French foreign-language curriculum, reconceptualizing the French classroom through a more inclusive lens. The volume engages with a broad range of scholars to facilitate an understanding of the process of French (de)colonization as well as its reverberations into the postcolonial era, and a deeper engagement with the global interconnectedness of these processes. Chapters in Part I revist the concept of the "francophonie," decenter the field from “metropolitan” or “hexagonal” and white France and underline how current teaching materials reproduce epistemic and colonial violence. Part II adopts an intersectional approach to address topics of gender inclusivity, trans-affirming teaching, queer materials, and ableism. Finally, Part III presents new ways to transform the discipline by affirming our commitment to social justice and making sure that our classrooms are representative of our students’ enriching diversity. Trade Review“Diversity and Decolonization in French Studies serves as a hands-on guide for educators, providing tools and strategies to transform pedagogies. ... it remains an indispensable compendium for those looking to transform their teaching approaches in line with diversity principles.” (Eric Essono Tsimi, Language Policy, November 9, 2023)Table of ContentsIntroduction: Siham Bouamer & Loic BourdeauPart I: Dismantling the ‘Francophonie’: Language, Race, and Empire1. Springer International Publishing AG Principles and Practice of Case-based Clinical Reasoning Education: A Method for Preclinical Students
Book SynopsisThis book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This volume describes and explains the educational method of Case-Based Clinical Reasoning (CBCR) used successfully in medical schools to prepare students to think like doctors before they enter the clinical arena and become engaged in patient care. Although this approach poses the paradoxical problem of a lack of clinical experience that is so essential for building proficiency in clinical reasoning, CBCR is built on the premise that solving clinical problems involves the ability to reason about disease processes. This requires knowledge of anatomy and the working and pathology of organ systems, as well as the ability to regard patient problems as patterns and compare them with instances of illness scripts of patients the clinician has seen in the past and stored in memory. CBCR stimulates the development of early, rudimentary illness scripts through elaboration and systematic discussion of the courses of action from the initial presentation of the patient to the final steps of clinical management. The book combines general backgrounds of clinical reasoning education and assessment with a detailed elaboration of the CBCR method for application in any medical curriculum, either as a mandatory or as an elective course. It consists of three parts: a general introduction to clinical reasoning education, application of the CBCR method, and cases that can used by educators to try out this method.Table of ContentsPART I: Backgrounds of educating preclinical students in clinical reasoning.- 1. De Gruyter The Inverted Classroom Model: The 2nd German
Book SynopsisWhen the 1st German Inverted Classroom Conference was staged in 2012, the organizers thought that it may have been the first and last conference of this kind: Too few teachers seemed to be familiar with this model in the first place and only a tiny fragment of them would actually apply this model to their own teaching scenarios. However, in the 2013 conference, we were overwhelmed with a large number of teachers who not only wanted to find out about this teaching and learning concept but had already used it. Consequently, the focus of the 2nd German Inverted Classroom Conference to which this conference volume is dedicated was no longer the “installation” of the Inverted Classroom Model (ICM) but fine adjustments in the actual application of it. This is reflected in the contributions to this volume. Even though all three central aspects of the ICM are addressed, (1) content production and delivery, (2) testing, and (3) the in-class phase, there has been a shift away from mere content production towards an expansion of the model as well as a move towards fine adjustments of the three components.
