  • Taylor & Francis Ltd What Even Is Gender

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDebates about gender are everywhere. Is it an inner identity, a biological fact, or an oppressive system? Should we respect it or resist it?What Even Is Gender? shifts the conversation in a fresh direction, arguing that these debates rest on a shared mistake: the idea that there is one thing called gender that both sides are arguing about. The authors distinguish a range of phenomena that established vocabulary often lumps together. This sheds light on the equivocations and false dichotomies of gender talk, and how they deny many of us the tools to make our needs, experiences, and concerns intelligible to others or even to ourselves. The authors develop a conceptual toolkit that helps alleviate the harms that result from the limitations of familiar approaches. They propose a pluralistic concept of gender feels that distinguishes among our experiences of diverse facets of gendered life. They develop a flexible approach to gender categories that reflects the value Trade Review'Briggs and George blow open the "gender debate" by questioning tired distinctions and unhelpful tropes about sex, gender, and gender identity, while fashioning new, multi-dimensional lenses through which we can begin to see human beings -- trans and otherwise -- in all their bio-psycho-social complexity. Anyone looking to move past politicised point-scoring and drain-circling disputes about social ontology will benefit from reading this book, with Briggs and George as their capable guides to a more nuanced sex and gender terrain.' - Brian D. Earp, University of Oxford, UKTable of Contents1. Introduction 2. All The Feels: Against "Gender Identity" 3. Don’t Hate the Player: Traits Versus Norms 4. • Taylor & Francis Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe idea of a âleisure societyâ was in its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was predicted that the pattern of falling working hours which had been experienced in Western societies in the first half of the twentieth century would continue indefinitely. The leisure society has clearly not been realised. On the contrary: contemporary industrial societies seem to be characterised by a shortage of time, experienced as âtime squeezeâ and stress. The leisure society idea can be seen as the modern version of the age-old dream of a âlife of ease and plentyâ. This analytically and empirically rich book traces the idea in history, through biblical, classical Greek, medieval and nineteenth century utopian writings and into twentieth century concerns with dystopia and the impact of rapid technological change. The âleisure societyâ concept turns out to have been an elusive and short-lived phenomenon. For a variety of reasons, the trend towards shorter working hours ran out of steam in the last quarter of the twentieth century. However, while leisure scholars have deserted the topic, a diverse range of activists, including environmentalists, economists and feminists, continue to make the case for reducing working hours. Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society? concludes that the on-going âstruggle for timeâ should be supported, for the sake of human health and well-being and for the sake of the planet. This is a valuable resource for students and academics in the fields of leisure studies, cultural studies, history, economics, sociology and political science. Trade Review"[Tony Veal] does a great job of offering a detailed overview of the leisure society debate and in setting the record straight by correcting some of the prevailing misconceptions about it. If anybody working within or outside leisure studies ever wanted to know what the predictions and ideas of leisure society were all about, they do not need to go any farther than this book." - Utsa Mukherjee Birkbeck, University of London, Annals of Leisure Research"[Tony Veal] does a great job of offering a detailed overview of the leisure society debate and in setting the record straight by correcting some of the prevailing misconceptions about it. This publication provides a remarkably detailed and accurate account of positions taken with regard to the leisure society by different authors, beginning from the 1930s until today … to those who will try, in the future, to say something new about the concept of the leisure society. Please first read Tony Veal’s book. He may have said it already. This is truly an encyclopedia of the leisure society." – Jiri Zuzanek, University of Waterloo, Loisir et Société / Society and Leisure"Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society? authored by A. J. Veal invites the reader to explore the diverse range of scholarship around leisure, work and time. The discussions around leisure and labour remain essential for contemporary human societies due to its effect on human health and wellbeing." – Ashwin Tripathi, Indian Institute of Technology, Leisure StudiesTable of ContentsPart I: Introduction, 1. Book SynopsisDigital Religion: The Basics explores how digital media and internet platforms are transforming religious practice in a digital age and the impact this has had on religious culture in contemporary society.Through exploring six defining characteristics of how religion is acted out online, including multisite reality, convergence practice, networked community, storied identity, shifting authority, and experiential authenticity, the book considers how digital religion both shapes, and is influenced by, religion offline. Questions asked include: How is religion being performed and reimagined through digital media and cultures? In what ways do the practices of religion online merge or correspond with shifts in perspective taking place in offline religious practice? How do the key findings of religion online reflect broader social, cultural, and structural practices observed within mobile, networked society? With case studies and furtTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisThis collection of essays offers global perspectives on feminist utopia and dystopia in speculative literature, film, and art, working from a range of intersectional approaches to examine key works and genres in both their specific cultural context and a wider, global, epistemological, critical background. The international, diverse contributions, including a Foreword by Gregory Claeys, draw upon posthumanism, speculative realism, speculative feminism, object-oriented ontology, new materialisms, and post-Anthropocene studies to propose alternative perspectives on gender, environment, as well as alternate futures and pasts rendered in fiction. Instead of binary divisions into utopia vs dystopia, the collection explores genres transcending this dichotomy, scrutinising the oeuvre of both established and emerging writers, directors, and critics. This is a rich and unique collection suitable for scholars and students studying feminist literature, media cultural studies, and wTable of ContentsForeword: A Utopian/Dystopian Spectrum: From Friendship to Fear, From Consent to Coercion Gregory ClaeysUtopia and Dystopia in the 21st Century: Feminism, Intersectionality, and the Rejection of Binarism Katarzyna Ostalska and Tomasz FisiakPart I: Between Anthropocenic Dystopia And Ecological UtopiaChapter 1: In Need of New Narratives: Feminist Ustopian Fiction Challenging the Anthropocene Alessandra BollerChapter 2: Post-Anthropocentric Ethics of Care in Turn-of-the-Century Fiction Katarzyna WięckowskaChapter 3: Environmental Dys/Utopian Short Stories in Olga Tokarczuk’s Opowiadania Bizarne Agnieszka ŁowczaninPart II: The Materiality Of Posthuman Intersections And Speculative Discourse In Fiction And ArtChapter 4: Critical Hope: Relationalities in 21st-Century Speculative Fiction and Art Dunja M.
