  • Brill Blumen ins Eis: Lyrische und literaturkritische Innovationen in der DDR: Zum kommunikativen Spannungsfeld ab Mitte der 60er Jahre

    Out of stock

Table of ContentsVorwort. Einleitung. I. KAPITEL. III. KAPITEL. Das Ordnen des 'innersten Landes'. Motto-Bezüge in Volker Brauns Zyklus Der Stoff zum Leben als eine Spezialform von Intertextualität. IV. KAPITEL. • Springer Refiguring the Archive

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRefiguring the Archive at once expresses cutting-edge debates on `the archive' in South Africa and internationally, and pushes the boundaries of those debates. It brings together prominent thinkers from a range of disciplines, mainly South Africans but a number from other countries. Traditionally archives have been seen as preserving memory and as holding the past. The contributors to this book question this orthodoxy, unfolding the ways in which archives construct, sanctify, and bury pasts. In his contribution, Jacques Derrida (an instantly recognisable name in intellectual discourse worldwide) shows how remembering can never be separated from forgetting, and argues that the archive is about the future rather than the past. Collectively the contributors demonstrate the degree to which thinking about archives is embracing new realities and new possibilities. The book expresses a confidence in claiming for archival discourse previously unentered terrains. It serves as an early manual for a time that has already begun.Table of ContentsIntroduction; C. • Springer Judaeo-Christian Intellectual Culture in the Seventeenth Century: A Celebration of the Library of Narcissus Marsh (1638–1713)

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMURIEL MCCARTHY This volume originated from a seminar organised by Richard H. Popkin in Marsh's Library on July 7-8, 1994. It was one of the most stimulating events held in the Library in recent years. Although we have hosted many special seminars on such subjects as rare books, the Huguenots, and Irish church history, this was the first time that a seminar was held which was specifically related to the books in our own collection. It seems surprising that this type of seminar has never been held before although the reason is obvious. Since there is no printed catalogue of the Library scholars are not aware of its contents. In fact the collection of books by late seventeenth and early eighteenth century European authors on, for example, such subjects as biblical criticism, political and religious controversy, is one of the richest parts of the Library's collections. Some years ago we were informed that of the 25,000 books in Marsh's at least 5,000 English books or books printed in England were printed between 1640 and 1700.Table of ContentsIntroduction; M. McCarthy. 1. Two Treasures of Marsh's Library; R.H. Popkin. 2. Queen Christina's Latin Sefer-ha-Raziel Manuscript; S. Åkerman. 3. • Ian Randle Publishers,Jamaica Man Vibes: Masculinities in Jamaican Dancehall

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Jamaica, dancehall music and culture has become perhaps the most prominent expression of Jamaican popular culture. Taking its name from dance halls in which popular local recordings were played by sound systems, the concept of Dancehall as a cultural space has rapidly gained momentum in the last three decades as deejay stars enjoy unprecedented successes locally and internationally. Donna Hope builds on her earlier work on popular culture and theories of sexuality/gender to examine the process and progress of Jamaican masculinities. Man Vibes: Masculinities in Jamaican Dancehall explores Jamaican masculinity through the male-dominated dancehall space that is at once a celebration of the marginalized poor and also a challenge to social inequality. Using the major masculine debates that are articulated in dancehall music and culture, Hope explores the transition of Jamaican masculinity in the 21st century. The dancehall representations of Ole Dawg (promiscuity), Badman (violence), Chi Chi Man (anti-male homosexuality), Bling Bling (consumerist/consumptive) and Fashion Ova Style (stylized transgressions and homosexuality) are all used to evaluate the relationship between dancehall culture and the hegemonic standard of masculine. Man Vibes significantly advances the Cultural Studies agenda and acts as a contemporary reader by speaking not only to dancehall music and culture’s masculinities but to Jamaican and Black masculinities in general.

Book SynopsisCaribbean Political Thought: The Colonial State to Caribbean Internationalisms uncovers, collects and reflects on the wealth of political thought produced in the Caribbean region. It traces the political thought of the Caribbean from the debate between Bartolomé de Las Casas and Ginés de Sepulveda on the categorization of Native people in the New World, through the Haitian Revolution, to the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. The ideas of revolutionaries and intellectuals are counterposed with manifestos, constitutional excerpts and speeches to give a view of the range of political options, questions, and immense choices that have faced the region's people over the last 500 years.Includes Contributions from: Laurent Dubois and John D. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisCaribbean Cultural Thought: From Plantation to Diaspora presents a critical appraisal of the range of issues and themes that have been pivotal in the study of Caribbean societies. Written from the perspective of primarily Caribbean authors and renowned scholars of the region, it excavates classic texts in Caribbean Cultural Thought and places them in dialogue with contemporary interrogations and explorations of regional cultural politics and debates concerning identity and social change; colonialism; diaspora; aesthetics; religion and spirituality; gender and sexuality and nationalisms. The result is a reader that presents a distinctive Caribbean voice that emphasizes the long history of critical writings on culture and its intersection with political work in the Caribbean intellectual tradition from within the academy and beyond.

  • Springer Verlag, Singapore The Making of Islamic Heritage: Muslim Pasts and Heritage Presents

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. Offering key insights into critical debates on the construction, management and destruction of heritage in Muslim contexts, this volume considers how Islamic heritages are constructed through texts and practices which award heritage value. It examines how the monolithic representation of Islamic heritage (as a singular construct) can be enriched by the true diversity of Islamic heritages and how endangerment and vulnerability in this type of heritage construct can be re-conceptualized. Assessing these questions through an interdisciplinary lens including heritage studies, anthropology, history, conservation, religious studies and archaeology, this pivot covers global and local examples including heritage case studies from Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan, and Pakistan. Table of ContentsThe Making of ‘Islamic Heritages’: An overview of disciplinary interventions.- Islamic Heritage: The Intertwining of History and Heritage in Islamic Contexts.- Muslim Cultures and Pre-Islamic Pasts: Changing Perceptions of ‘Heritage’.- Reclaiming Heritage through the Image of Traditional Habitat.- Framing the Primordial: Islamic Heritage and Saudi Arabia.- Images of Piety or Power?
