Book SynopsisPaola Brusasco's study offers an original insight into Sri Lankan literature in English and an exploration of cultural, social, and linguistic issues at the basis of the country's ethnic conflict. By focussing on two distinctive and representative writers, both Burghers, yet with different personal histories, Brusasco confronts issues of cartography, history, and language, all contributing to a specific definition of identity. Both Ondaatje and Muller are "outsiders", the former because of his diasporic existence, the latter because of his eccentricity within the reality of a divided country where the legacy of British colonialism and the process of redefinition following independence in 1948, as well as matters of geography and history, become crucial to writers.Trade Review"Brusasco achieves the aim of re-directing theoretical assumptions about the two authors' works to the benefit of both academic and non specialist audiences, thus re-positioning Sri Lankan literature in the ever-growing context of South Asian studies in English. Ondaatje's The English Patient, Running in the Family, and, most prominently, Anil's Ghost, as well as Muller's "Burgher trilogy" and Colombo: A Novel, are here analyzed in the light of the writings by Antonio Gramsci, Michel Foucault, Homi Bhabha, Edward Said, and Hayden White. Quite original is the discourse on language that is, translatability looked at from cross-cultural and deconstructionist perspectives which include the debate around domesticating and foreignizing otherness, the difficult relation between Sinhala and Tamil in Sri Lanka, the controversial local variety of English, and its implications at the social level." -- Professor Carmen Concilio, University of TurinTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface by Geetha Ganapathy-Dore Introduction 1. Book SynopsisWhat did the citizens of the Soviet Union identify with? Where did the societal faultlines lie? Did mass demonstrations effectively de-stabilize Soviet order? How did informal groups come into being within a society based on uniformity? What impact did new media and new forms of interconnectivity have on the development of a multinational Soviet society? What remained after the end of the Soviet Union? Using Soviet soccer teams from Moscow (Spartak, Dynamo, ZSKA) and Kiev (Dynamo) as examples, Manfred Zeller tells a story of community and enmity in the post-Stalinist multinational empire. This brilliant monograph exposes the complex loyalties that governed group identities and explains phenomena like the love-hate relationship between Kiev and Moscow. 'Moscow against Kiev' in Soviet times wasn't a question of war and peace, but in soccer it was already a feeling of 'us against them' and a question of victory or defeat in the complex multinational setting of the region. Zeller's book is an important contribution to the research of Soviet pop culture after Stalin as well as to contemporary debates on antagonism in the post-Soviet world.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAcross Europe, radical right-wing parties are winning increasing electoral support. The Dark Side of European Integration argues that this rising nationalism and the mobilization of the radical right are the consequences of European economic integration. The European economic project has produced a cultural backlash in the form of nationalist radical right ideologies. This assessment relies on a detailed analysis of the electoral rise of radical right parties in Western and Eastern Europe. Contrary to popular belief, economic performance and immigration rates are not the only factors that determine the far right's success. There are other political and social factors that explain why in post-socialist Eastern European countries such parties had historically been weaker than their potential, which they have now started to fulfill increasingly. Using in-depth interviews with radical right activists in Ukraine, Alina Polyakova also explores how radical right mobilization works on the ground through social networks, allowing new insights into how social movements and political parties interact.Trade Review"Polyakova's sophisticated exploration of why and how ultra-nationalists succeed challenges widely held assumptions about the determinants of right-wing electoral support and individual radicalization. Her study is unusual in comparing the European far right beyond the borders of the EU and in including field research results from Western Ukrainian provinces. This succinct investigation should find wide attention among researchers of political extremism and will help us better understand the reasons for the current surge of xenophobia across Europe." -- Dr. Andreas Umland, Kyiv-Mohyla AcademyTable of ContentsList of Tables and FiguresAcknowledgements1: Introduction2: Radical Right Parties in Western and Eastern Europe3: How Right-Wing Mobilization Works on the Ground4: Reimagining Political Parties and Social Movements5: ConclusionBibliographyIndex

  • Towards a New Russian Work Culture: Can Western

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Towards a New Russian Work Culture: Can Western

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThis innovative book offers a fresh perspective on the national work culture of Russia and the substantial role foreign institutional and cultural impact has had in shaping it. Russia's contemporary work culture is understood as a national system supplemented by new values and attitudes that have been adopted through the mediation of foreign individuals and corporations or in response to the challenges of Western competition. It is argued that the foreign factor triggers change in the landscape of Russia's work culture, the scope of which depends on the type of influence. However, there is a certain core of the work culture that remains resistant to any external impact.Trade ReviewThis volume is by no means just an exposition of yet another point of view on the phenomenon of Russian work culture and its role in Russias modernization breakthroughs. It presents an unexpected and original approach, an absolutely new perspective of this seemingly old topic. On the one hand, the authors consider Russias national work culture in the context of foreign influence and test it for resistance to external pressures. On the other hand, they reveal the foreign trace in its fabric ― the features that were introduced and internalized in the course of direct and indirect contacts with foreign cultures. For the authors, Russian national work culture is not a finished, static entity, but a dynamic system that is in permanent interaction with (predominantly) Western culture and has largely developed in direct competition with it. It is this approach that makes this book exceptionally appealing. -- Vladimir N. Leksin, Institute of System Analysis of the Russian Academy of SciencesTHE PUBLICATION OF THIS BOOK IN ENGLISH MARKS THE NEXT TURN IN the ever-important and ever-uneasy relationship between Russia and the West, both in its pragmatic and ideological dimensions Judith Pallot, University of Oxford, Europe-Asia Studies, November 2018

Book SynopsisThe Ukrainian response to the 2022 Russian invasion has inspired a new appreciation for their country both within and beyond Ukraine. The steadfastness of Ukrainians in the defense of their country has surprised many. The stories presented here highlight the ways in which Ukrainians have long explored the meaning of their country and culture through the arts; and the manner in which the arts and their creators have empowered Ukrainians to confront the Russian invaders. These developments also offer intriguing clues about the culture, society, and politics of a post-war Ukraine.

Book SynopsisIn contemporary global capitalist culture, time-consciousness becomes more important than self-consciousness. In the realm of lived time, the identity of the self opens up to an encounter with otherness. Insights into the ways in which this dynamic unfolds enable one to affirm human temporalities in their potential difference to the temporalities of global capitalism. The book offers an empirical exploration of lived temporalities on markets, in buses and in traditional subsistence in Guatemala, and a theoretical exploration of these through the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and inter-relational approaches within psychoanalysis.

Book SynopsisIn a globalised society, dance is gaining in importance as a means of conveying body knowledge: It is perceived as an art form in itself, is fostered and cultivated within the bounds of cultural and educational policy, and is increasingly becoming the subject of research. Dance is in motion all over the world, and with it the knowledge that it holds. But what does body knowledge in motion constitute, how is it produced, how can it be researched and conveyed? Renowned choreographers, dancers, theorists and pedagogues describe the unique potential of dance as an archive and medium as well as its significance at the interface between art and science. Contributors are, among others, Gabriele Brandstetter, Dieter Heitkamp, Royston Maldoom and Meg Stuart.

Book SynopsisGlobalisation and transnational migration have altered people's understanding of as well as their relationship to their "dwelling places" and "places of origin". Taking the empirical case of the South Lebanese Shi'ite village of Zrariye and its migrant population in Abidjan/Côte d'Ivoire, the book shows how "place", which has become a vital political, economic and social resource, continues to be of tremendous significance in the age of mobility and change. "Lebanese in Motion" explores how villagers "at home" and "abroad" are involved in producing a "translocal village-in-the-making", which emanates as a social field through their practices and narratives. Travel and the means of communication make it possible to keep in constant touch and thus renegotiate kinship, generational and gender relationships beyond local, regional and nation-state boundaries. Particularly interested in understanding how female identities are redefined, the study delineates how gender and place are mutually constituted in the translocal village under study.

Book SynopsisEver since the first European to visit the southernmost extremity of the African continent, the Portuguese navigator Bartholomew Diaz, made landfall in 1488, what is now known as South Africa (about midway on the route from Europe to India) has been an important location for trade, colonisation, and the expansion of evangelical Christianity. In 1652 the Dutch East India Company established the first permanent white settlement at present-day Cape Town and expelled the indigenous black residents, but under Jan van Riebeeck the minuscule community employed Africans as indentured and slave labour, thus inaugurating what became known as the native problem. European women were few, and miscegenation, though outlawed, became a fact of life, so that a tripartite population of Blacks, Whites, and Coloreds was established, thus creating the bases for apartheid (or racial segregation). British culture was introduced to South Africa in 1814. But there was growing conflict between the old and new cultures that led to the South African (or Boer) War in 1899-1902, which was followed by the creation of the Union of South Africa in 1910. From that time to 1948 British culture predominated; since then Afrikaner culture has developed. The authors of the several chapters provide the historical contexts of recent developments and achievements, so that the reader can appreciate the milieu that has produced such famous individuals as Jan Christiaan Smuts, Paul Kruger, Christiaan Barnard, Desmond Tutu, Nadine Gordimer, Helen Suzman, Bobby Locke and Nelson Mandela.

I was aware of a soft, pervasive, lovely peace surrounding me, in contrast to the din of daily life. I am not sure if I took a deep breath first to grasp afresh the newness of nature or held my breath in an attempt to clasp a fleeting moment. Come along reader, to this edge -- join the author on a remarkable journey through Norwegian culture, society and nature as she has seen it and seen it change since the early 1950ties. Come along reader; come to reflect on events and vigour that drives man as he unfolds in this northern landscape. Come along reader, experience how cultural impulses transgress borders of nations and weave deeds, minds and voices in the common called history, and the aspiration called future. I remember my dear old aunt used to say, in her native Yorkshire dialect, and I guess that included many old viking words, ''Sammer ''em up and ''ugger ''em in. The translation I was given as a child was, ''Pick them up and carry them. The author picks it up her way, and leaves room to follow or depart -- but whatever your path is, you will enjoy this ride. Born a Yorkshire lass in 1929, Gertrude M Marsh has over a lifetime developed a unique, first hand and skilled eye on Norway. University Press of Southern Denmark Re-Imagining Sleswig: Language and Identity in

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the interplay between regional, national and transnational dimensions of identity and language in the Danish and, to a lesser extent, the German minority communities of the Danish-German borderlands. The study shows that the minorities function as two closely-linked and supplementary groups to the national majorities. German language dominates most spheres in both minorities, yet bilingualism and code-switching are essential to minority life and defining group identity. Furthermore, whilst national identities are of a lesser importance to the minorities today than regional or transnational identities, minority identity is still nonetheless hybridised from its roots in the national cultures and languages of Denmark and Germany. The minorities are thus able to cherry-pick social, economic, political and linguistic capital from both nations. This book provides a fresh critical understanding of borderlands as living spaces and proposes a theoretical framework for the study of hybrid and dual minority identities, rooted in theories from nationalism studies, sociology, anthropology and sociolinguistics.

You might be waiting for just the right word to describe what you have seen and done. This collection revitalises the study of the cultural processes of stability and change. The 25 essays invent new processes for a rapidly changing world. They illustrate how different perspectives enrich cultural analysis and add a bit of playfulness and experimentation to a longstanding academic issue. The authors -- from anthropology, European ethnology, sociology and cultural studies -- are peeking into blind spots and looking under the furniture in order to understand why and how some kinds of social life become visible, while so many others remain unseen. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisOur century is the urban century -- a century in which the balance between urban and rural has been tipped with more than half of the world''s population now living in cities. It is also a century characterised by an unprecedented urbanisation that has affected both urban form and urban life, and a century where the role of Urban Design has never been so intensified - and so urgent. It is our endeavour with this book to explore emergent theories and practices relating to urban design in order to better understand current processes of urbanisation and to intervene in our built environments with a focus on the quality of life in them. Through a series of articles and projects, Musings -- an urban design anthology brings together researchers, practitioners and students from the Urban Design Programme at the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, Aalborg University with the aim of providing a multilayered and nuanced perspective on the discipline of urban design -- one that explores a number of optics through which urban design can be reflected upon, and ways in which the contemporary built environment can be intervened with. In this way the book navigates new frontiers in search of a better understanding of emerging urban culture. This journey presents a varied account of the urban design field through four chapters that reveal core themes framing both the theoretical and practical challenges of contemporary urbanity: Performativity, Mobility, Transformation, and Design & Method. Illustrating the direct relationship between research and teaching in the Urban Design Programme, the book investigates the themes through research and through project work of students at the Bachelor and Masters level. It is also the aim of this book to encourage continued discussion in the field of urban design through this - a contribution of our musings - manifested here in the theory, practice and production generated in the Urban Design Programme at Aalborg University.

Book SynopsisAn introduction to early Danish trade unionism 1870-1940. Before the Second World War Danish workers were among the best organized in Europe. It is the high level of unionisation which makes Danish trade unionism 1870-1940 an interesting case, in particular the high level of unionisation of unskilled workers, male and female, in a trade union movement based on the craft-principle. In this book key issues of Danish trade unions before 1940 have been examined in order to understand and explain this particular case of successful trade unionism in Europe before 1940. In eight chapters the book examines the organisational structures of Danish trade unions, Scandinavian and international cooperation, the dominance of skill, agitation and ideology of trade unionism, the impact of strikes and industrial conflicts, trade unions and politics, womens work and identities and the work and organisation of unskilled workers -- thereby seeking to explain the success of Danish trade unionism before 1940.

Book SynopsisThe symposium ''Sleepers, Moles, and Martyrs: Secret Identifications, Societal Integration, and the Differing Meanings of Freedom'' held in Reinhausen, 2002, formed the basis of this issue of Ethnologia Europaea. Occasioned by the social, political and mass media discourses after the bombings of New York''s World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, an interdisciplinary group of scholars came together to explore the connotations and implications of the term ''sleeper''. The biographies of terrorist perpetrators are but one of many permutations of sleeper-like phenomena in late modern polities. Clandestine operatives of the state are sleepers, and both willing and unwilling victims of terrorism are discursively transformed from sleepers into martyrs. Starting with analyses of the discourses about sleepers in Part I-their historical antecedents, narrative emplotment, and semantic differentiation-Part II turns to the hidden or unspoken of aspects of the state, the challenge of fundamentalist terrorism to the modern political project and the tensions between neighbourly discourse, public display and the state. Part III juxtaposes changing depictions of Shiite martyrdom with the violence done to the term ''martyr'' within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In Part IV, cultural secrets encoded in memorials and public silences in academic discourse are addressed. The different cases assembled offer comparative materials and perspectives from the USA, France, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Spain, Iran, Israel, Istria and Sweden.
