Book SynopsisEmergency medical services (EMS) systems provide important benefits to the public. Every day, EMS systems provide immediate medical care in response to individual health emergencies, such as motor vehicle crashes. They also play an important role in responding to disasters that threaten the health and safety of the larger public. Yet EMS does not receive the same recognition and support from policymakers as other services such as police and fire departments. The National Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council has argued that the lack of recognition of EMS as an essential service and public good hinders the efficiency, effectiveness, and equity of EMS provision and -- by extension -- that of the Nation''s healthcare and disaster preparedness. This book explores the concept of an essential service as it relates to EMS and considers the pros and cons for States and localities of implementing EMS as an essential service. Also, it examines the characteristics of a public good in economic theory as they relate to EMS systems and discusses the general policy guidance economic theory offers regarding their efficient provision.

Book SynopsisThis monograph explores the relation between travel, language and culture in the context of the travel philosophy of Alphonso Lingis and translation theory. The traveller is seen as a translating agent and intercultural mediator. The book begins with an historical overview, tracing the interrelatedness of translation and culture from Mikhail Bakhtin''s notion of dialogue, to the recent ''cultural turn'' in translation theory, ethnography and philosophy. The monograph then turns its focus onto the philosophy of Alphonso Lingis. Lingis believes that rational language is unable to fully transmit meaning, arguing that ''translation of culture'' requires the use of all senses. He calls for spontaneity in translation as bodily performance -- highlighting the importance of the remainder or surplus in translation by emphasising ways of knowing that are channelled through taste, touch, vision, smell and sound. The traveller to a foreign country finds himself in a place like a deep woods: the unknown language he encounters speaks to him like a silent language and conveys no meaning. By placing the body at the centre, Lingis questions the idea of silence as muteness, and posits that the human voice, coming "from the bowels and tubes of the body", is able to connect and evoke a reply, because "our voice does not produce the sound out of silence" (The First Person Singular 24). Thus, even where there is absence of a common language, communication is still possible by means of a corporeal grammar.

This author has arrived at the following conclusions: The plight of civilisation is doomed by the sun expiring within 4.5 billion years. It is also determined by the exhaustion of the known and the potential resources of the small planet Earth around the year 5,000. The future of civilisation (considered in the time frame imaginable to man) is swayed by its current crisis, which results from the Triangle of Civilization Death (the combination of the bombs of population, ecology and depletion of strategic resources), which will be felt around 2050; The future of civilisation is dependent on its capability of entering the phase of Wise and Universal Civilisation in the years to come. This is conditioned upon the abandonment of the known socio-political and economic systems: capitalism, socialism, communism and their hybrids. These systems are based on the constant growth of population and the economy, which is unsustainable any longer; Democratic Ecologism ought to be the new system, securing a wise and sustainable functioning of civilisation; it would prioritise the ecosystem in the choices made by man and societies. Is it possible to introduce these solutions to practical life? This is up to people becoming wiser. It examines African Civilization and its encounters in view of the last 500 years of European and American slavery, exploitation and diplomatic paralysis. In post-colonial Africa (1960-2014), foreign powers have more influence on Africa. However, Africa cannot claim to have the diplomatic prestige to influence European, American or Asian powers. The overwhelming challenges that Africa has been experiencing did attract global reaction ranging from military intervention, diplomatic push or pull (rarely in between), and frequent humanitarian involvements. It is still inconclusive if global attention on Africa has had impact as much as it has been a stomping ground for advisors, donors, politicians, international agencies and a phalanx of well-meaning NGOs. However, their impact can be exemplified by the fact that in Sub-Saharan Africa, every second individual still does not have access to fresh water and electricity in the 21st century. In this book, the focus is put on Sub-Saharan Africa, where every other habitant has no access to fresh water and electricity. In this book, the following modernization strategies are recognized and discussed in Africa today: Westernizatio, Africanization, Chinezation, and Globalization. The evaluation of these policies is done with the civilization approach which is characterized by a big-picture view of the integration of society, culture (including religion), and infrastructure over a long period of time on a large territory. Furthermore, in the 21st century, global civilization are forming and penetrating contemporary civilizations such as: Western, Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, and African enforcing the development of large scale global businesses and capital. In such a context, should African Civilization follow the questionable policy of Westernization and Globalization? Or should it not follow these challenges and avoid the temptations of fast development and look rather towards the Africanization approach, which could make it last longer than the so called more modern, mentioned civilizations. This is a pressing question as young people from the most deprived backgrounds seem to inspire but not actually gain from the most commercially successful cultural innovations. It would seem that culture in its various facets, plays a complex part in defining and maintaining social inequalities. In this book, the author explores how youth culture and market ideologies combine to form oppressive hegemonies that maintain the gap between both the traditional and emerging new consumer classes. The author argues that it is the market power of youth culture that has influenced commercial culture as a whole with its control(s) and representations in ways that affects all of society. Questions around its control(s), ownership and distribution are crucial for the understanding of its role in the maintenance of social and structural inequalities. Drawing on Lacan, Benjamin, Freire, Collins, hooks and others, the author underpins his observations of his community enterprise research with young people with a theoretical framework that explores the interiorisation process of cultural oppression and liberation. The author also examines how the Freirean process of "consciousness-raising" can be applied to examine youth culture in ways that empower its consumers, as well as tracking the genesis of some of its more negative market origins.

It is a continuation of "Physics and Logic of Life," published by Nova Science Publishers in 2012. Whereas the previous book discussed fundamental aspects of biology, the current volume aims to analyse connections between the biological and the societal worlds, and to clarify basic principles of the genesis of social structures. The physical basis and logic of life are discussed briefly in the first two chapters; then the discussion turns to the fundamental structures that ultimately determine the nature of cognition-based societies. The emergence of life initiates a creative process that exceeds the limits of computability. Biological evolution occurs as an unfolding of functional constraints in which dynamic parameters, possessing criteria of perfection and having selective values, are established. The genetic system arises as a semiotic structure with a high combinatorial capacity for expansion and generation of new meanings in the course of individual development and evolutionary modification. Human language is a second natural semiotic system by which fundamental knowledge of the world is expressed, and which provides powerful means for its description and assimilation. The evolution of societies is a further expansion of language systems based on implementation of the structures of human self-reflection. These basic structures include the possibility of perceiving a world external to the Self and acting within it. The signification of conceptual entities is the starting point in the development of civilisations, and concrete patterns of signification determine features specific to particular human cultures. The evolutionary growth of information occurs via the open process of language games, in which interacting statements about the world determine continued increase of complexity. The universal language of music and its future role in global communication are discussed. This book is intended for theoretical biologists, sociologists, psychologists, specialists in semiotics and philosophers.

Book SynopsisThe first chapter of this book traces the rise of the idea of Manifest Destiny, showing how it contributed to the historical traumatisation experienced by Native American tribes during an initial period in U.S. history (1790-1890). Illustrations of renewal and revitalisation among present-day Native Americans, and an interpretation of their wider significance for our contemporary world are examined. In the second chapter, the relatedness of First America Inhabitants is explored with Pacific Islanders by using autosomal genetic markers: the HLA alleles. HLA is the most polymorphic human genetic system and is most useful for comparing populations'' relatedness. The ethnic groups of Pacific Islanders, First America inhabitants and other World Populations were used. The authors of the third chapter use longitudinal data to examine mediational mechanisms that account for the relationship between ethnic identity and self-esteem among American Indian youth. The authors of the last chapter of this book explore the effect of food assistance on American Indian women''s food choices and the role of food assistance programs in improving food choices and diet quality in vulnerable populations.

Book SynopsisThis book explores the historical roots of the current status of women in Malta, and through extensive examination of the intricate interconnectedness between history, culture, religion and the use of space in architecture (specifically the Maltese covered balcony), suggests the provenance dates back to era of the Knights of Malta who ruled between 1530 and 1798. Malta boasts hundreds of open-air stone balconies, a common architectural characteristic of Mediterranean subtropical climates, allowing air to circulate through the home during the hot summers. However, Malta also has many covered or boxed-balconies called Gallarija, especially in the capital city of Valletta where the Knights lived. They are a costly addition counterproductive to the balconies intended purpose. The first known Gallarija-type balcony sits on the Magistral Palace built by the Knights in 1675. The Knights of Malta, a group of ultra-religious celibate warriors from Western European aristocracy with a mission to prevent the Muslim expansion into Europe at any cost. With full support from the Pope, the Knights ruled Malta with an iron first for over 250 years and imposed their male dominated social and political ideology, completely devaluing womanly contribution to the social, economic and political development of Malta. The Knights were forbidden from any contact with women, a vow they were not willing to uphold, and thus the author argues that the Knights adopted the Gallarija to reinforce the self-imposed isolation and conceal their illicit sexual relations with Maltese women and prostitutes. The author presents historical evidence and accounts connecting the Maltese Gallarija to Moushrabiyya and similar covered balconies found throughout Muslim countries of North Africa and the Middle East. The Muslim counterparts were made of carved wood latticework initially designed to keep water cool and later to obscure segregated women within the home. The Knights consciously and intentionally modified the design by adding glass and shutters to completely isolate themselves from citizens, and most importantly to ensure their sins go unnoticed.
