This book collects critical observations in the context of the history, current state, and future of the fledgling interdisciplinary field of mobility studies. The twelve essays in cultural studies and the social sciences reflect work conducted at the Research Platform Mobile Cultures and Societies, hosted by the University of Vienna, Austria. Topics include migration, flight, gendered mobilities, mobility and mediality, mobile collectives, moving images, protest movements as well as translation and transfer. Together with an introduction on the conceptualization and significance of mobility studies and an essay by Mimi Sheller on the futures of uneven mobilities, which anticipates current experiences of immobilization and quarantine, the articles present original contributions to this topical field of research.

NIAS Press Hearing Southeast Asia: Sounds of Hierarchy and
Book SynopsisThere is no moment of our waking life in which we do not experience sounds or make sounds. The human body is a sound-making organism. In densely peopled areas like many parts of Southeast Asia, then, the potential is for tumult, an infinity of different sounds competing to be heard. Pandemonium is not unheard of in Southeast Asia - not least in times of political unrest - but in everyday situations uproar is uncommon; cultural, social, political and personal factors (among others) work to calm, channel or even silence the tumult. Providing focus to this interdisciplinary volume on sound in SE Asia are detailed descriptions of the context of sounds and sound-making within the region's diverse socio-cultural semiotic frames of hierarchy and power. Drawing on examples from Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, each author discusses some aspect of sound in relation to their ethnographic context. Sound examples are also found on a companion website. Varied approaches to understanding sound are offered but in some way each relates to hierarchy and power. All show the importance of sound for understanding the processual implementation of hierarchy (or its opposite) in the construction of the social environment and the role of sound in the efficacious engagement of power in a variety of religious and political form. This is a much-needed volume, long overdue, not only offers non-Western perspectives to a field that is firmly Eurocentric; it also goes beyond examining sound in isolation, considering this instead in relation to the other senses and to sociocultural constructions. In such ways, then, the volume offers new directions of study, an exciting prospect.Trade ReviewHumans are surrounded by sound day and night and yet very few scholars have studied our sonic environment. "Hearing Southeast Asia" breaks the silence at last. It is the first major volume to explore the soundscapes of insular and mainland Southeast Asia. The chapters cover the full range of sounds from the sound wars of noisy megacities to the quiet healing music or ritual whispering of tribal communities. The authors form the fine fleur of sonic studies, mostly using an ethnographic approach. "Hearing Southeast Asia" will remain the standard work on Southeast Asian soundscapes for a long time to come. NIAS Press I Will Send My Song: Kammu Vocal Genres in the
Book SynopsisToday, the Kammu are an upland people mainly found in Laos, Yunnan, Thailand, Burma and Vietnam. This people - who have retained their orally based culture through to the present day - provide an example of complex sung poetry that has seldom been studied in detail. What this volume offers is an ethnomusicological presentation of one person's vocal performance of rather highly varied sets of words in different manners of performance, and the use of these competences in communication with other singers. This orally transmitted form of singing is unique to the Kammu but is related to a much larger complex in Southeast Asia. It will thus be of interest to a wide group of musicologists.Table of ContentsFigures v ii Preface ix Kammu Pronunciation x Symbols and Abbreviations xi Prologue: A Departure 1 1. Introduction 3 2. Reaktion Books Prague 1900: Poetry and Ecstasy
Book SynopsisThis illustrated work introduces the world of "fin-de-siecle" Prague. Around 1900, that city's artists and artisans began to develop an ornamental language inspired by the contemporary revival of Czech culture and influenced by Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, and the Vienna Secession. To begin with, lyricism and poetic symbolism dominated the visual arts. Jan Preisler, one of the most important figures of the time, created sensual paintings and sculptures based on themes connected to the writings of such Czech authors as Zeyer and Brezina. Other artists such as Kobliha and Hlavacek focused on turbulent forms, dramatic expressions of torment, and the macabre. In the applied arts, exuberant floral and vegetal motifs were gradually transformed into geometric patterns. This book charts the effects of the emergence of modernism and the search for Czech national identity on both the fine and the applied arts, as well as on architecture, music and literature. The text also includes a wealth of illustrations of interiors, architectural and sculptural details and documentary photographs. Biographies of the most important artists are provided, as well as a full chronology of artists and events.

Peeters Publishers Language and Cultural Change: Aspects of the
Book SynopsisIt is common wisdom that language is culturally embedded. Cultural change is often accompanied by a change in idiom, in language or in ideas about language. No period serves as a better example of the formative influence of language on culture than the Renaissance. With the advent of humanism new modes of speaking and writing arose. But not only did classical Latin become the paradigm of clear and elegant writing, it also gave rise to new ideas about language and the teaching of it. Some scholars have argued that the cultural paradigm shift from scholasticism to humanism was causally determined by the rediscovery, study and emulation of the classical language, for learning a new language opens up new possibilities for exploring and describing one's perceptions, thoughts and beliefs. However, the vernacular traditions too rose to prominence and vied with Latin for cultural prestige. This volume, number XXIV in the series "Groningen Studies in Cultural Change", offers the papers presented at a workshop on language and cultural change held in Groningen in February 2004. Ten specialists explore the multifarious ways in which language contributed to the shaping of Renaissance culture. They discuss themes such as the relationship between medieval and classical Latin, between Latin and the vernacular, between humanist and scholastic conceptions of language and grammar, translation from Latin into the vernacular, Jewish ideas about different kinds of Hebrew, and shifting ideas on the power and limits of language in the articulation of truth and divine wisdom. There are essays on major thinkers such as Nicholas of Cusa and Leonardo Bruni, but also on less well-known figures and texts. The volume as a whole hopes to contribute to a deeper understanding of the highly complex interplay between language and culture in the transition period between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Peeters Publishers Transnationality, Internationalism and
Book SynopsisNew means of transport and communication allowed unprecedented mobility of people, goods and ideas in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, which contributed to far-reaching economic, social and political changes in a first wave of globalisation. In its genuine transnationality, the European historical avant-garde can be seen as a product of this development. Cosmpolitanism, internationality and internationalism became emblems of the avant-garde in its pursuit of a 'new', modern international culture trangressing 'old' borders and limitations dictated by conceptions of nationhood, linguistic restrictions, and state boundaries. Simultaneously, national and nationalist reflexes can be traced in the avant-garde as well - in a European context marked by a plethora of competing nationalisms. This collection of essays focuses on the transnationality and inter-nationalisms in the European avant-garde as well as on conflicts, paradoxes and debates in the avant-garde as genuinely transnational configuration of artistic movements, which possessed nevertheless many nationalist edges. The book presents a panorama of the historical avant-garde oscillating and operating between transnationality, internationalism and nationalisms of different kinds, both in national cultural fields and a transnational European arena - from Iceland to Greece and from the Pale of Settlement to the Atlantic.
