  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Museums Refugees and Communities

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMuseums, Refugees and Communities explores the ways in which museums in Germany, The Netherlands and the UK have responded to the complexities and ethical dilemmas involved in discussing the reasons for, and issues surrounding, contemporary refugee displacements.Building upon an ethnographic study carried out in the UK with refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the book explores how object-led approaches can inspire new ways of thinking about and analysing refugeesâ experiences and European museumsâ work with their communities. Enlarging the developing body of research on museumsâ increasing engagement with human rights and focusing in particular on the social, cultural and practical dimensions of community engagement practices with refugees, the book also aims to inform growing debates on museums as sites of activism. Museums, Refugees and Communities offers an innovative and interdisciplinary examination of museum work with and about refugees. As such, it should appeal to researchers, academics and students engaged in the study of museums, heritage, migration, ethics, community engagement, culture, sociology and anthropology.Table of Contents1.Museums, Refugees and Communities; 2.The ‘dirty Work’ of Boundary Maintenance; 3. Pathos and Agency in Museums’ Refugee Work; 4. Materialities of Exile; 5.Politics and Practices of Engagement Work with Refugees; 6. Objects and Belonging; 7. The Body of Objects; 8. • Taylor & Francis Archival Silences Missing Lost and Uncreated

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisArchival Silences demonstrates emphatically that archival absences exist all over the globe. The book questions whether benign âsilenceâ is an appropriate label for the variety of destructions, concealment and absences that can be identified within archival collections. Including contributions from archivists and scholars working around the world, this truly international collection examines archives in Australia, Brazil, Denmark, England, India, Iceland, Jamaica, Malawi, The Philippines, Scotland, Turkey and the United States. Making a clear link between autocratic regimes and the failure to record often horrendous crimes against humanity, the volume demonstrates that the failure of governments to create records, or to allow access to records, appears to be universal. Arguing that this helps to establish a hegemonic narrative that excludes the âotherâ, this book showcases the actions historians and archivists have taken to ensure that gaps in archives are filled. Yet the book also claims that silences in archives are inevitable and argues not only that recordkeeping should be mandated by international courts and bodies, but that we need to develop other ways of reading archives broadly conceived to compensate for absences.Archival Silences addresses fundamental issues of access to the written record around the world. It is directed at those with a concern for social justice, particularly scholars and students of archival studies, history, sociology, international relations, international law, business administration and information science.Table of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Theorising the Silences; 2. What are silences: the Australian example; 3. Silent contemporary records: access to the archives of Special Investigation Commission in Iceland, 2010-2019; 4. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Representing Abortion

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRepresenting Abortion analyses how artists, writers, performers, and activists make abortion visible, audible, and palpable within contexts dominated by anti-abortion imagery centred on the fetus and the erasure of the pregnant person, challenging the polarisation of conversations about abortion. This book illuminates the manifold ways that abortion is depicted and narrated by artists, performers, clinicians, writers, and activists. This representational work offers nuanced and complex understandings of abortion, personally and politically. Analyses of such representations are urgently needed as access to abortion is diminished and anti-abortion representations of the fetus continue to dominate the cultural horizon for thinking about abortion. Expanding the frame of reference for understanding abortion beyond the anti-abortion use of the fetal image, contributors to this collection push beyond narrow abstractions to examine representations of the experience andTable of ContentsChapter One: Representing Abortion; Part One: Seeing (And Not Seeing) Abortion; Chapter Two: Secrets; Chapter Three: It’s A Boy!
