The colourful designs are given in three sizes with the amounts of yarn needed. A technique section brushes up your crochet skills and there's advice on colour combinations too. A superb crochet book for all crocheters and newcomers to the world of crochet will find a reason, or 40 or so to begin with. Enough inspiration to get you hooked. * yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Beautiful blankets, especially handmade, crochet ones should be available on the NHS as I think they make everyone feel better! With blanket projects on my mind, I have had my eye on this book for some time. I own a couple of Leonie’s other books, namely 100 colourful ripple stitches and 75 colourful Hexagons to crochet. Therefore I know she writes clear, concise instructions with good pattern notes. The reason I wanted this book may surprise you. It wasn’t for the blankets or the throws. I couldn’t wait for this book to be published, because of the stunningly original edging patterns! They are unique, truly inspiring and just what I have been searching for. Last year I completed a very pretty ‘corner-to-corner’ blanket that desperately needed an unusual but simple edging. It has been languishing in my ‘work in progress’ pile for the last few months Nothing had caught my eye, until this book came out. I am spending my coffee breaks today pondering colours and yarn. There are 40 block and stitch patterns in this book. If you think about it, that works out at a bargain 28p per pattern (I consulted my calculator) Of course I love all of these too; the patterns are bright and cheerful, perfect for your future summer projects. The patterns are suitable for beginners and more experienced hookers too. At the back of the book there is a very handy, quick reference and measurements guide. It gives the number or blocks of rows and also the yarn quantities and colours. There is of course the usual stitch guide and illustrations for beginners. My favourite blanket pattern is this one… I am rather enamoured with the Neon frills blanket on page 28. The frills use surface crochet, which is something I have been using and enjoying recently. It makes a flat project become alive with texture… I can highly recommend this book to you all! https://www.lazydaisyjones.com/2017/03/beautiful-blankets-afghans-book-giveaway.html * Lazy Daisy Jones *This is my second book by Leonie Morgan, and I am not disappointed! From the cover and throughout, this book is a riot of colour with beautifully detailed photographs and illustrations. There is so much to make from this book too - it really does have everything you could wish for - including decorative stitches, blocks, granny squares and stripes! At the back of the book is a size guide, taking the guesswork out of resizing each project to suit your requirements! Another plus point for this book is a whole section on edgings, so you can give your afghan blanket a unique edging - rather than following a set pattern. As for the patterns themselves, each pattern is written clearly with the addition of a chart for those who prefer to read their patterns this way. Additionally, each pattern is graded in difficulty, and there is a large section on techniques and stitches, making it extremely suitable for complete beginners through to those with more experience. I love this book, which is extremely well written and allows you to get in touch with your creative side at the same time. Well done Leonie - another excellent crochet book for my collection -- Cathy Sommer * Customer Review *I was really looking forward to getting my copy of this book and now that it is here I am not disappointed. For someone who is only just learning to get past the basics in crochet this book is a joy with 40 different patterns to help the reader to put together beautiful crocheted blankets. I've gone through the book several times since it arrived and I can't find a single pattern that I don't want to try. The instructions are clear, the photo illustrations are bright and there are instructions included on various techniques to help you to master each pattern. Every crocheter, no matter how advanced they are, should have a copy of this book to hand. Thank you Leonie Morgan! -- Allison Isom * Customer Review *A compilation of forty patterns for both beginners and experts. The patterns are a mixture of granny squares and row by row designs. The illustrations are clear and vibrant tempting the reader to pursue the clear and well written instructions with easy to follow charts. I was particularly pleased with the diverse choice of patterns- ranging from 'pastel rows', which involves no turning and is great for stash busting to the rather more involved 'raisin baby blanket' which uses the traditional 3D Irish Rose , varying colour with each block. THe book is informative giving yarn quantities necessary for each pattern, suggestions for edging and joining, blocking and special stitch instructions. I rather liked the fact that the contents page had a motif alongside each afghan featured in the book -- Christine Shepherd * Customer Review *Love this book. Lots of new patterns to crochet. Cannot decided which to start with as all so good -- Kathy Downing * Customer Review *A modern crochet book I actually got on quite well with , it does written instructions and charts plus a gorgeous photo and after a play with a few wool scraps , not the right weight or type , I managed to make a flower square that sort of resembled what they thought it should look like, lots of different ideas and ive been crocheting for years so that was a pleasant surprise -- Kaye Chamberlin * Customer Review *This book has a clear concise layout. English terms are used rather than American. It is suitable for all level of crafters, from beginners to experienced crafters. The book has a good variety of designs and includes cot size to bed throw in each pattern. The book also provides a range of edgings and borders to finish your project. A very enjoyable craft book. -- Elaine Speak * Customer Review *I absolutely love this book, it has clear instructions and lots of lovely Blankets for me to make.It also has charts which I find very helpful. It is definitely going to help me use up my huge Yarn stash. -- Jacqueline Jackson * Customer Review *

  • 100 Flowers to Knit & Crochet (new edition): A

Search Press Ltd 100 Flowers to Knit & Crochet (new edition): A

Book SynopsisThis 15th anniversary edition of the best-selling book 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet, with over 130,000 copies sold! An utterly delightful collection of designs for any knitting or crochet enthusiast, it not only includes the most beautiful flowers and leaves, but also a wonderful, whimsical collection of fruit and vegetables as well as butterflies. As most of the projects use only small amounts of yarn, it is the perfect way to use up scraps, or practise using novelty yarns. You can use them to decorate clothing, hats, bags and belts, embellish home accessories, or make a beautiful bouquet as an unusual display piece. There are so many flowers to choose from that there is sure to be something you will love, from simple spiral roses and two-tone fuchsias, to elaborate layered blooms and fabulous felted flowers. The flowers are beautifully arranged on the pages, with stitched leaves and embroidered stems, and are cross-referenced to a separate section featuring clear pattern instructions and information on yarn requirements. You will also find plenty of inspiration for embellishing your finished flowers with beads, buttons, sequins and embroidery. In addition, there are lots of ideas for using them in a range of fun ways, from unusual jewellery to decorating gift-wrapped packages. The patterns use UK crochet terms, with a US/UK conversion chart printed on the fold-out flap. Previously published as 9781844484034.Trade ReviewNature wins, especially in needlework popularity contests. In this fifteenth-anniversary edition, veteran needleworker Stanfield (The Knitter's Stitch Collection, 2021) recaps her take on translating flowers, fruits, and vegetables into yarn. Written in UK terminology (of note to crocheters), this collection first showcases finished items, then follows with technical instructions. Those directions include yarn specifications and methods, and, for crochet, instructions for how to make up (i.e. put together) and symbols, with further differentiation into beginning, intermediate, and advanced projects. Many of the pieces will be familiar (e.g. ladybug and acorn); others, less so (like Santolina and rudbeckia). A color portfolio of ten projects, without instructions, acts as a creative guide to using flowers and fruits for added design flourishes, on an evening handbag or winter scarf, for two examples. A standard for libraries that don’t already own this classic reference. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *This is a really useful book for knitters and crocheters alike who would like to embellish their knitting or crocheting or have small projects to make. The pictures inspire one to try something new. The patterns are very clear and I like the fact that yarn weights are given rather than affiliating projects to a particular brand. The fold out flap with abbreviations is brilliant as a less experienced knitter or crocheter will not have to flip backwards and forwards to find out new terminology. This would be a great book to keep in your collection. -- Monica Russel * Monica Russel *Table of ContentsForeword/About this book 6 Before you begin 8 Materials and equipment 10, Crochet symbols 12, Abbreviations 14, Terminology and aftercare 15, Notes on knitting 16, Notes on crochet 18 Directory of flowers 20 Flowers 22, Leaves 42, Fruit and vegetables 44 Technical instructions 46 Knitting instructions, Basic designs 48, Intermediate designs 54, Advanced designs 62 Crochet instructions Basic designs 66, Intermediate designs 74, Advanced designs 92 Projects 108 Project 1 : Peg bag 110, Project 2: Evening handbag 112, Project 3: Stationery 114, Project 4: Christmas gift wrap 115, Project 5: Baby's cardigan 116, Project 6: Winter scarf 118, Project 7: Summer shoes 119, Project 8: Ruffles 120, Project 9: Place settings 122, Project 10: Shopping bag 124 Index 126 Resources and credits 128

  • Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary: 150 Essential

Search Press Ltd Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary: 150 Essential

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTunisian crochet has experienced a great revival in recent years – a surge in popularity that is showing no signs of slowing down. Anna Nikipirowicz outlines a wide variety of new and unique stitches in this beautifully produced reference work. This Tunisian crochet stitch collection offers classic and new stitches, designed to keep needlecrafters of all skill levels occupied for years to come. Tunisian crochet produces a fabric that is similar to a knit but worked on a hook. It’s a lot quicker, combining the best of knitting and crochet, creating a dense, durable fabric. Packed with 150 stitches for beginner and intermediate to advanced, you can start with basic stitches which are organized into themed sections. With actual-size swatches, you can see straight away if you are getting it right. It also includes charts and step-by-step photo instructions. The Tunisian Crochet Stitch Dictionary is designed to get crochet fans discovering new stitches and creative ways of working crochet.Trade ReviewThe book is packed with a directory of 150 stitches (which are all so well explained), as well as a really useful section on Tunisian crochet skills. Each stitch has really detailed, step-by-step instructions, actual-size swatch pictures and charts. I’m not particularly au fait with charts (my brain does not work that way naturally), but thanks to the symbols and abbreviations list in the skills section, I was able to follow the charts easily too. If I’m honest, my Tunisian crochet skills are very limited. Of course, I have released a Tunisian crochet shawl pattern, but this uses only Tunisian Simple Stitch. My knowledge of other stitches is definitely lacking! As soon as I flicked through the stitch directory, I was making lists of stitches I wanted to try and getting ideas for future designs. I decided to work up a couple of swatches to try out some new stitches, and honestly, I had so much fun. To be fair, since I have a one-year-old to take care of every day, my yarn time these days is very precious, but this truly was like a breath of fresh air. I'm really looking forward to using some of these stitches (and more) in future designs. The stitches I tried were Rib Stitch (variegated yarn), Lace Shell II (purple yarn) and Diamond Lace (grey yarn). The Rib Stitch is pretty simple but super effective, and I love how it worked up in this gorgeous variegated yarn - the yarn made a relatively simple stitch really shine. The Lace Shell II blew my mind. I had no idea Tunisian crochet could look like that! I actually think I over-stretched my swatch a little when I blocked it, but the shells are so pretty and delicate. I can imagine this stitch would be fabulous for a summery shawl or wrap. The Diamond Lace was my first try at lace in Tunisian crochet, and now I want to try all the lace stitches! This would be so striking as a panel on a garment or even a shawl. Next up on my list to try are Tunisian crochet cables! […] This book fits that bill perfectly! You should definitely get your hands on it if you're able to. -- Mary-Lynn Dalrymple * Wholly Hooked *Tunisian crochet produces a fabric that is similar to a knit but is worked on a hook. It combines the best of knitting and crochet, creating a dense, durable fabric. Additionally, actual-size swatches so you can easily see if you’re getting it right and helpful charts are featured, as well as consistent yarn weight being used throughout for easy stitch comparison. I have long wanted to get my teeth into Tunisian crochet and this book has shown me how. There are clear written instructions alongside beautiful, helpful photographs and charts to enable me to tackle a huge array of stitches. There are also clear instructions on how to begin one's Tunisian crochet journey, explaining in simple terms how to begin with the basics. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in crochet. -- Susan chesworth * Customer Review *I am very new to the art of Tunisian crochet and had no idea there were so many different stitches. This lovely book contains 150 from the more well known stitches to some very exciting and unusual ones. It will definitely appeal to those more experienced in Tunisian crochet but will inspire newbies, like me, to continue learning and trying them out. I like the layout of the book, especially the photos of all the stitched swatches at the beginning so you can easily find what you need. Each stitch has its own entry with written instructions and chart, plus a real life sized photo of how the stitch should look. There is a good basic skills section at the back which has a clear, large font list of the symbols and abbreviations used in the patterns so it is very easy to use. -- Lesley Cowland * Customer Review *I loved the easy-on-the-eye colour palettes and was further lured in by the pictures of interesting swatches in this book. I could recognise many of the stitches but was indeed inspired by the combinations and colourways. I am happy to report that this book is a thorough and fulsome dictionary of Tunisian stitches, laid out with a concise, clear system that deploys verbal, diagrammatic and photographic instructions helpful to all comers, from newbies to masters. It's got all the usual info about yarns, hooks and other notions associated with the craft, tables of chart symbols and abbreviations, and a full index in the back. I particularly appreciate the illustrated contents that allows a quick visual search. All the basic stitches are there, including variations. The author covers all the categories from lace, cables, colour work, popcorns and honeycombs to pineapple stitches and varieties of chevrons and waves. It even includes some lovely ideas on embellishments such as weaving, embroidery and surface crochet. There is even a collection of borders and edges – a category not always acknowledged within Tunisian crochet. I was thoroughly inspired and spent quite a few happy hours trying out the swatches and jotting down the multiple ideas that bubbled up as a result. I definitely recommend it. -- Lindy Zubiary * SlipKnot, September 2023 *Table of ContentsIntroduction About this book DIRECTORY OF STITCHES Fans and Shells Bobbles and Clusters Cables Relief Stitches Lace Stitches Waves and Chevrons Embellishments Edgings TUNISIAN CROCHET SKILLS Yarn Equipment Getting started Special stitches and techniques Symbols and abbreviations Index Credit

Book SynopsisCapture the spirit of a cosy Nordic Christmas with eleven crocheted decorations to create. Nordic Christmas Crochet is a mix of classic and modern-style Christmas decorations, based on the simple, natural, Nordic aesthetic that characterises Krea Deluxe, the company owned by Heidi and Pia, the authors. The book is full of beautiful, styled photographs of the crocheted decorations in situ on a Christmas tree, in the window and around the home, all the time giving a very personal touch to the festive season. Each project is accompanied by clear instructions, and templates and diagrams are also included to aid the reader in the creation of these exquisite embellishments, which include: stars, drums, pennants, birds, mistletoe and Christmas trees.Trade ReviewNo one does Christmas quite like the Scandinavians, and this book epitomises stylish Scandi-inspired festivities. Filled with typically Nordic designs inspired by nature and neutral colours -- with a sprinkling of seasonal sparkle from glitter yarns -- this book of 11 festive patterns is a must-have for anyone who loves coordinated Yuletide decorations. Authors Heidi and Pia Johannesen are the dynamic duo behind the ethical, sustainable Danish yarn brand Krea Deluxe, and are already well-known for their seasonal Christmas designs. Inspired by memories of the sisters' childhood Christmas traditions centred around foraged and handmade decorations and gifts, this collection includes designs inspired by classic decorations. For the Christmas tree, make simple stars and sparkly baubles, miniature strings of bunting, tiny trumpets and drums, and a sweet little bird with a feathery tail. For decorating your room, arrange groups of simple Christmas trees on the mantlepiece, hang a bunch of crocheted mistletoe over the doorway, and pop LED tea lights inside tiny houses. Templates are included along with tips accompanying each pattern, but there isn't a how-to section covering the stitches and techniques you'll need to make the designs, so some prior crochet knowledge is assumed. However, most of the patterns are suitable for beginners and intermediate crocheters, making this an accessible and timeless Christmas collection you'll return year after year. -- Inside Crochet * Issue 163 *If you like your Christmas décor simple, clean and perhaps a bit Scandinavian-inspired, you’ll love these 11 timeless crochet decorations by sisters Heidi and Pia Johannesen. • Colourful Wayuu Bags to Crochet: A Guide to

Search Press Ltd Colourful Wayuu Bags to Crochet: A Guide to

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisColourful, functional and fun – these striking crocheted Wayuu bags have the best combination of features! Using the technique of tapestry crochet, there are ten stunning bags to make, all in excitingly bold colourways and designs, with the characteristic woven shoulder straps and drawstring cords. Some of the bags are also embellished with pompoms and tassels. Using the traditional geometric patterns and shapes of the Colombian and Venezuelan Wayuu people, each bag is unique and you can make them in your own choice of colours. Tapestry crochet uses just one crochet stitch and is an easy technique to learn, and a section at the end of the book shows you how to make the beautifully braided straps and drawstrings. The braided straps could also easily be made on their own as trendy belts for trousers and skirts. Using very simple stitches, with easy-to-follow patterns and widely available 100% cotton yarns, these bags are too beautiful to resist - so pick up your yarn and hook and get started!Trade ReviewInspired by the vibrant bags made by the Wayuu tribe, these tapestry crochet projects are bursting with colour! The book starts with Rianne's techniques for colourwork, carrying the yarn and creating the bases of the bags, illustrated with colourful step-by-step photographs. Then we're onto the ten projects, beginning with a simple hourglass pattern designed for people taking their first steps into tapestry crochet. After that you can move onto floral designs, geometric patterns, stripes and a fun flamingo bag. * Inside Crochet, Issue 113 *Recently received this book to review and have been constantly picking it up and gone through the techniques shown, very impressed with written instructions and pictures to ensure easy understanding. Great the way the author also gives the problem solving hints as well. Now have the cotton ready to try out the first project! -- Helen Wootton * Customer review *Love this book it's a pleasure to use, the patterns are great, it's well written and very easy to follow all the aspects of the bag making process. -- Maggie Bacon * Customer review *I love this book. I have never crocheted over a bundle of yarns before and the step by step instructions and the photos that illustrate the techniques are brilliant. The author briefly explains the origin of wayuu crochet and then explains several techniques before you even see the patterns. The book has a beginner pattern and also more advanced patterns. Further on in the book the different techniques for braiding handles and drawstrings are explained. I particularly liked the section about using a kumihimo disc as I bought one a while back that I haven’t yet used. This is an excellent book that explains each step in depth so that even a beginner crocheter could follow it. I can’t wait to get started on my first project. -- Joanne Gardner * Customer review *Crochet bags with a difference. -- Julie DeeDee Banks * Customer review *Until recently I had barely seen any Wayuu bags. This beautiful book has ten examples to crochet. US terms are used but UK terms are noted. The instructions are clearly worded and the pictures and explanations of techniques are very precise throughout. Included in the book is an amazing section on making the shoulder straps for the bags using ply split braiding. It's fascinating. The only problem I have is deciding which design to crochet first. Highly recommended for more experienced crocheters. -- Faye Mulhern * Customer review *I adore the projects to crochet. I love the Wayuu bags, the projects have easy to follow patterns with step by step photographs to help you along the way. I recently started to crochet and would say this isn't a book for beginners, like me, however, I am going to aspire to make some of the projects when I have mastered the different stitches. A great book full of lovely projects. -- Sally Mitton * Customer review *The colourful, geometric-patterned bags of the Wayuu people, who are native to Colombia and Venezuela, provided the inspiration for the 10 projects in Rianne de Graaf's new book. Start your journey of mochilas (Spanish for "backpack") with the Small Hourglass Bag designed with beginners in mind. Full-colour photos guide you step-by-step through the basic tapestry-crochet technique. Learn how to finish your bag with a woven shoulder strap and kumihimo-bread drawstring. Rianne also provides troubleshooting tips and advice on selecting cotton yarn and the appropriate size of hook. * Interweave Crochet *I feel envious of Rianne! Imagine discovering an exotic form of crochet made by a tribe in South America - and which few people have heard of, let alone written about! She first saw Wayuu bags on Pinterest a few years ago, became enthused and wrote this book. The Wayuu tribe live in Venezuela and Colombia on the shores of the Caribbean. Their homes are basic huts, they sleep in hammocks, and they use mochila bags for storing their few possessions. Mochila is the general word for a shoulder bag made in tapestry crochet, and Wayuu is a sort of trademark for the bags made by this tribe - which can sell for £100! But it does take them 3 weeks to complete one. These are sturdy duffle bags made in vibrant colours and striking geometrical patterns. They are worked in tapestry crochet, in dc over 4-6 strands of 4ply cotton. These carrying yarns lie along the top of the work, and colour changes are made by bringing a new one forward as the working yarn and letting the current one join the other strands. The bags are finished off with a patterned shoulder strap and drawstring, and sometimes big tassels and pompoms. Traditionally the strap would be crocheted, or woven on a back-strap loom, but Rianne adds an international touch by using ply-split braiding, which originated in North West India, and was used as a neck decoration for camels! The drawstring is made from Kumihimo braid from Japan! Detailed instructions and several designs are given for both. But simple crochet can be used instead. Rianne gives all the basic instructions for the tapestry crochet, including coloured charts for the designs, and step-by-step photos. She has lots of hints and explanations in her very readable style. There are 10 detailed patterns for bags, attractively photographed. This is quite a tricky technique; it must be said. The simple dc needs 'modelling', and patience is needed to handle the colour changes neatly, and not get all those balls in a tangle. The bag is worked in a spiral, so how to avoid a step at the beginning of a round? We are taught the art of 'staggering' to cope with this. I made a coaster for practice and am looking forward to making my own Wayuu mochila bag soon. If you like a challenge and are intrigued by new crochet techniques, I would recommend Wayuu Bags to Crochet - as far as I know, it is currently the only book on the subject. -- Sally Magill * Slipknot, The Knitting & Crochet Guild Magazine *Table of ContentsForeword 5 Techniques 6 Troubleshooting 13 Materials used 15 Crocheting the base 17 Spaces for the cord 20 Fastening off the bag 21 Wayuu Mochila Patterns 22 Hourglass 22 Large Flower 28 Azulejo Tiles 32 Diamonds 36 Little Flowers 40 Plain and sparkly stripes 45 Cross 50 Flamingo 55 Traditional 59 Maze 65 Making the shoulder strap 69 Making the drawstring 92

Why not use the stitches to create your own projects. Crochet is so versatile you'll be amazed how quickly you'll be designing your own things. There are a lot of stitch books out there but this one is so different. It offers so many different types, designs, use of other materials that other books don't. I was really amazed by the diversity of the stitches. They are also explained in both written and chart format so either way you should be able to copy the designs. Different colours, techniques & items such as beads are used to demonstrate so many amazing styles. Some would be brilliant for afghans (blankets) and some would be even better for garments. At the start of the book is all the information you will need to recreate the designs within the book. The instructions are clear and easy to understand. This really is a book you'll use for years to come. I often take my stitch books down whenever I feel like designing something. They give you so much inspiration. There are matching iron-on transfers or harts, so you can start embroidering straight away. * Machine Knitting Monthly, April 2023 *To mix crochet with embroidery is an exciting opportunity to combine two of my favourite crafts and this book is beautifully set out with enough detail for even a beginner to give it a go. It will be interesting to see how easy it is to use the full size iron-transfers, but given there are step-by-step instructions and advice also on how to use them with a heat-transfer pencil if desired, the author has thought of everything. The modern projects within the book offer an opportunity to create a beautiful project that also has a function. I feel this is another successful collaboration between publisher and author. -- Helen Todd * Customer Review *We will have encountered crochet in its many forms at some point; imagine your favourite granny, with her crochet blanket adorning her knee. Or in my case, my surrogate grandmother, with her solo pristine house which was home to a whole array of varieties … a waistcoat, a cushion cover, an armchair rest cover …yet if I am honest, I looked at the medium coldly, with a definite visual image of what crochet was. My definition? Squares all finally attached together, each made separate. Either in one colour or if the artist was feeling fancy, a contrasting tone edge. Ta da, final. Are you with me? If so, then maybe you, like I, will be surprised to discover that there is a depth to this method … your crochet creations do not have to stop at bland beautiful squares … why not decorate them with another textile art method: embroidery! Who is Anna Nikipirowicz? A crochet and knitwear designer, her patterns and tutorials span many a webpage. Inspired by her family, namely her mother and sister, her creative background has developed within her the ability to emerge as an artist herself. She is a Rowan design consultant, so we know our progressive learning is in good hands! This book has been written with a wealth of abilities in mind. Discover the basic steps of crochet, before you eventually tackle the bigger picture, making your own crochet projects which have been finished with an object or scene in embroidery. Within Embroidered Crochet, all the patterns have been included for the projects and you will come across everything from meadows to birds and nature. The colours of the projects are all subtle yet not bland; they are tasteful, not gaudy to overly bold or brash. Imagery throughout documents every step and comes across as very aesthetically pleasing. Project themes cover the usual blankets, with more unusual ideas, for example bunting and basket making. So if you are after a niche gift for someone you know well, or would like to add a 3D element, or an added flourish to your own crochet creations, this is a book which I observe to be a key player. -- Ailish Henderson * www.ailishhenderson.com *Have you ever tried double crochet? This gorgeous practice forms a dense, firm base that is perfect for stitching on using crochet yarn or cotton. This intriguing title introduces the best materials, tools and techniques to use, before delving into a medley of pretty projects. Say hello to a meadow-themed tapestry, a rose emblazoned basket set, and a granny square blanket adorned with woodland birds. * Sew Magazine, ISSUE 175, May 2023 *Which came first: the crochet or the embroidery? In this case, embroidery trumps its companion, since every one of the 10 projects is defined by the stitches on its top. Prolific blogger and author Nikipirowicz (Crocheted Wreaths for the Home, 2020) has created nature-inspired home and hearth objects that fit into any décor, from a wildflower wall hanging and mushroom bunting to vegetable coasters and a birds and trees blanket. While the background for each pattern is a beginner’s joy of single crochet all the way (double crochet to those in the UK), the stitching on top takes fanciful needlework to portray—fairly realistically—items like roses and mushrooms. Straightforward directions include excellent color photographs, and it's an unusual treat that Nikipirowicz includes both the yarns she used and generic options, which will be important for U.S. stitchers who can't access brands only available abroad. Upfront sections on blocking projects, 11 embroidery stitches, and finishing are comprehensive and easy to follow. The only missing ingredient? • Mandalas to Crochet: 30 Great Patterns

Search Press Ltd Mandalas to Crochet: 30 Great Patterns

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisCrocheted mandalas are having a moment! And it is no wonder the mandala is in vogue: one evening is often enough to begin and finish something eye-catching. This book celebrates the sheer fun of making and showcases Haafner Linssen’s modern colour schemes and patterns. With full patterns and inspiring photos, a review of crochet techniques that helps you create a perfect circle, a discussion of materials, colours, finishing techniques, and lots of project ideas, this book is a guarantee for many hours of happy mandala-making.Trade ReviewThere are 30 mandala patterns to crochet in this book, all sorts of colours and all sorts of stitches. However what I particularly like about these mandalas is the fact they are all new and very modern to look at. nothing too lacy and the colours are for everyone, neither too bright or too pastel. These days I like to review a book by actually making something from it. I find it is easy to lose yourself in beautiful images, be inspired to get your hook out and all to often be disappointed by a pattern that is hard to follow or is not well written. Has that ever happened to you? Therefore I made two mandalas from this book, and I am pleased to announce the patterns are superb, easy to read, they flow nicely and there are charts too. I am just getting to grips with charts. I find if I do not understand a pattern instruction, a quick glance at a chart makes it all very obvious as to where I am to place my hook for the next stitch. The photographs are clear bright and enticing and best of all there are projects. My problem with mandalas is what to do with them after you have made them. This book has the answers. My next project from this book, will be a mandala that i will turn into a dream catcher, I have feathers and everything! If you are pondering buying this book (as I was) ponder no more...go get it. You will not be disappointed. Message to Haafner 'please can you write another crochet book asap please?' Full review including images of the finished projects: http://www.lazydaisyjones.com/2016/06/crochet-book-review-mandalas-to-crochet.html * Lazy Daisy Jones *I recently got my hands on this book Mandalas to Crochet by Haafner Linssen. Published by Search Press. I love crocheting mandalas, there’s just something very soothing and relaxing about doing these. Plus they are normally quick to make up, so you have a finished project in no time, which is a bonus as I always seem to have unfinished works in progress lying around, but then again doesn’t every crafter?! The author starts off by giving you information on yarns and selecting colours. Also she gives tips on crocheting the perfect mandala and by using certain techniques how you can achieve a more finished polished look to your work. If you are a beginner some of this information might go over your head for example, she uses standing stitches to begin rounds but you can still do them using the starting chain. I found this section very informative as she gives you information on starting rounds, joining a round, reading charts and how to do invisible joins, which I have always been lazy about doing but hey it does look better! She breaks the mandalas down into the following sections: Basic: which as the name suggests is a good place to start off if you are a beginner. The mandalas here are basic patterns just increasing and using different colours. A good place to start. Classic: these patterns are a little more challenging but still doable, more advanced stitches are used like popcorn and front post trebles. I crocheted the Lovely Lace Mandala & the Make it Pop Mandala from this section. Flowers: these patterns had a flower like theme and all so beautiful. I did the mandala “Oriental Lily” from this section and its my favourite from the book. Something Special: the last section of the book, again more beautiful mandalas with great colour combinations. All the mandalas in the book have a chart included too. The next section deals with borders and how you can finish off your work with a pretty border. She gives examples. The final section is all about projects and how you can incorporate the mandalas into projects. She lists the following: boho bag, hotpad, tablemat, summer scarf, lap blanket, rug and finally leaves and lace blanket, which is stunning. If you enjoy crocheting mandalas then this is the book for you, she gives 30 patterns which you crochet in no time and make them your own, simply by changing the colours or adding a different border. Full review including crocheted mandalas: https://themessybrunette.com/2016/06/15/book-review-mandalas-to-crochet-30-great-patterns-by-haafner-linssen/ * themessybrunette.com *A very well presented book, with clear sections and instructions. The patterns are all attractive and appealing, which I find unusual for a crochet book! The colourways are stylish and tasteful, but of course, you could use something more vibrant if you wanted. There are patterns included which create some unusual textures, so these could no doubt inspire you to take things further. This book is enough to encourage me to pick up a hook again. * Sue Gardener Buchanan *I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book and I am so glad that I did. Very well written with plenty for the novice right through to the advanced crocheter. Plenty of beautiful illustrations too which are really helpful * Emma Sweeny *this was perfect as it had a type of refresher type course which was perfect as it had been a few years since my last go so this was the most beneficial part. Great step by step instructions and how to do them in various colours annd yarns Any age this book is ideal for * Julie Henderson *Very happy with this book, I'm a beginner and I found it very easy to follow. Lots of designs to choose from. Would recommend to anyone who wants to learn * Victoria East *We all know about granny squares, but how about circular patterns? Mandalas need no introduction due to their popularity in other crafts, and now they are given the crochet treatment. Choose from thirty different patterns and seven projects and start your own mandala adventure. This book has a beautiful cover that reminds me of the mandala coloring books that are so popular currently. If you are at least an improver level crocheter, you can tackle these patterns, and the book includes a handy refresher course to remind you of the stitches (nice clear diagrams with good use of color). There are also helpful diagrams for things like fastening off, joining rounds and other things related to working in the round, as well as tips about choosing colors. There is a short section on how to make your work flat and neat, and a whole series of pages depicting each mandala so you can choose which you want to make. The patterns are grouped into basic, classic, flowers and something special, and all feature a chart and written instructions as well as the size hook you need (3mm features most often). The projects are well laid out and easy to read, albeit with quite small not very bold print. I think that the large photos make getting it right easier, and certainly make you want to get started. At the back you can find the projects, and see how the mandalas can be sized up or down to make a bag, scarf, mat, hot pad, two different blankets and a gorgeous bath mat, my own favorite. I always admire anybody who can take an idea like granny squares and stand it on its head, showing how versatile crochet truly is. A unique and user-friendly book. * Rachel Hyde - Myshelf.com *This book is a great for any who enjoys crochet. It is good for a beginner and a more advance hooker alike. The book begins with the basics of crochet, including stitches, yarn selection, colour selection, hook selection and even trouble shooting. By the time you have read this section you are fully armed to make great choices to ensure your project looks amazing. The book then goes on to show you various mandalas. It starts with basic patterns and works up to more advanced options. The pattern is given in chart form and in written. Meaning which ever way you prefer to crochet it is all there for you. The patterns are easy to follow and give clear consise instructions. More importantly the mandalas you can produce are simply stunning. The next part of the book contains projects for you to try. These include a bags and blankets. Once you have completed these you will be fully armed to make a variety of stunning projects out of your mandalas and you can take you creativity to the next level and try out your own projects. The book ends with a summary of all the symbols and abbreviations used in the book. Nothing is left to chance or assumed you know. It is all in the book for you. I heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in crochet. It is the best book in my library at the moment and I see it being extremely hard to replace. best purchase I have made. * Lisa Mayles *This is a lovely, well written crochet book. There are some really interesting tips in the "read this first" section for making joins and step ups invisible. Then there's a crochet refresher course with really clear diagrams of all the stitches together on a few pages which I love. Some books spread the different stitches all over the book and you're forever having to look them up in the index. Next there are 30 mandala patterns with written instructions and diagrams. I must admit I found the diagrams really scary when I first saw them but after reading the introduction they made sense. I was pleased to find some projects at the back of the book with a good selection of things to make with the mandalas. I've only recently learnt to crochet but I've made a start on my first mandala and it's going well so far. I'm looking forward to having a go at some of the more challenging patterns too. * Jane Turnball *Lovely book that crocheters of every level of ability, (even beginners due to the comprehensive guide to every stitch used at the start of the book) will be able to read and make beautiful mandalas. Wonderful use of colour and easy to follow written instructions and charts. Also, some fabulous ideas on how to use your mandalas to make lovely items such as a throw, bag, etc. * Emma Sweeney *This is a stunning well written book. It features 30 mandalas and 7 projects. There is a great begining section showing how to do the stitches, use of different threads and hooks with illustrations to show the finished project. The mandalas do not tell you what thread to use so I guess it lets you experiment. I tried the scallops of the sea and found it helpfull that there was both written and chart instructions as well as a photo of how it will turn out. A beginner can easily create a mandala and there is enough to challenge a more experienced crocheter. A delightful book to browse through. I will look forward to more from Haafner Linssen. * Alice Cowie *As a novice crocheter myself at first glance this looked a little daunting but after reading it through I decided to give my first mandala a go. The instructions are clear and easy to read, I did use YouTube videos as a visual aid to make sure I was doing it right to begin with. But it's so simple to pick up and I soon found myself confident in what I was doing. The colours of images are wonderfully vibrant and really inviting to look at. They draw you into the book. It's a sturdy book made from good quality paper that will definitely stand the test of time. With 128 pages to read, there will definitely be something that catches everyone's to try. I can't wait to get stuck in to my next mandala project. Thank you for making such an excellent book! * Jodi Darnley *April 2016 The mandala is in vogue right now and if you love the granny square then you'll adore this modern take on the crochet doily! Using modern colour schemes and eye catching patterns, each project will take you through the process of creating a perfect circle with large format charts full instructions and inspiration project ideas. Hook one up as a table mat, or go bigger and turn your mandala into a colourful cushion, some wall art for your home or even a stylish bag! You can easily make one in an evening or weekend and they're great stash-busters for yarn hoarders. There are 10 projects in this book, guaranteeing hours of happy mandala making * Love Crochet *This is a beautiful book showing how to create a variety of mandalas, from the delicate to more substantial items like a bathroom rug. With detailed instructions and beautiful photography, this book is an inspiration! * Hot Brands, Cool Places *Mandalas are making a huge revival at the moment. Haafner has taken this and brought mandalas to the present. The book starts with a before you begin section. This takes you through everything you need to know to make the mandalas. It sets you up and gets you ready. It takes you through everything from colour to yarns to use. You are supplied with a complete crochet refresher course. It shows you step by step each of the stitches used. Illustrations are supplied with the instructions which make it very easy to follow. The patterns are in written format and in chart format. Not only do you get patterns of mandalas you also get projects which you can also use them in. This book is really special. I love the mandalas and I love the projects ever more! * Crochet Addict UK *Mandalas – colourful circles to crochet. This book includes easy to make, quick to make mandalas. These designs can be completed in an evening. The book includes Before You Begin, Mandala Selector and Mandala Patterns. The latter are split into categories: Basic, Classic, Flowers, Special and Borders. You’ll find all the stitches you need, full instructions and charts for 30 mandalas. My favourites are Scallops and Confetti (neither are shown on the cover). Each design is clearly shown with good photos and clear instructions. Once you have mastered making mandalas, check out the seven projects for a beautiful bag, hotpads, table mats, scarf, blankets and rug. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *The book is very detailed. It contains 30 great mandala patterns for you to crochet. There are three chapters in the book, beginning with the essential information you may need. Including a crochet refresher course with the stitches and techniques needed and a beautiful section on all the different yarns you can use. The book then moves onto different colour combinations and how you can create a colour plan. There are many mandala patterns to choose from so there is a section on called the mandala selector. The book then moves into the patterns. This is where the author has chosen her 30 favourite patterns for the readers to try. There are patterns ranging from simple to advanced using very technical stitches. The final chapter is mandala projects you can get stuck into. This is the most exciting part of the book in my opinion! There are all sorts of things you can make with the mandala patterns, from a boho bag to table mats, scarves and blankets. * rachelbustin.com *This book is beautifully presented with easily readable well-spaced print and UK terminology. Large clear photos and charts accompany all patterns. Each chart has a symbol key with it, so there is every encouragement to get into chart-reading if you are new to this. It begins with a brief refresher section on all the crochet stitches used, including 'magic ring'. Next, some unusual methods for starting and finishing rounds to make the join less visible. Also tips to avoid ruffling or cupping of your circular piece. The effect of colour choice is well illustrated by a picture of the same mandala done in 8 different colour schemes. There are 30 mandala patterns divided into basic and other categories. The first ones are in simple all over dc, htr or tr, but later more stitches such as basket-weave, popcorn, spiked and post stitches are featured. I tried "Make it Pop!" (p68) and was very pleased with the result. I know that it seems strange to be talking about Christmas when we've not had Halloween or Bonfire Night yet, but it's only 8 weeks until Christmas! So definitely the right time to be getting gifts and decorations made so you're not panicking at the last minute! I've been there and done that! In fact, one year, I gave Mr JK one sock and a half finished WIP which I then went on to finish knitting over the Christmas holidays! The author, Sarah-Jane Hicks, was new to me, but I have started following her on Instagram where she is @flo_and_dot, and she has a lovely, colourful feed. (And I discovered that she lives in Norfolk too!) The book is packed full of super-cute projects - there are 20 of them in total. If this kind of crochet is new to you, you might be interested to know that 'amigurumi' is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed yarn creatures. As well as all the projects, Sarah-Jane has given lots of information and tips on the different techniques you will need to complete the projects - from inserting eyes to sewing together the individual pieces to finish your work off. There are lots of photographs and the instructions are very clearly written, step-by-step. It's really hard to pick a favourite project because I can honestly say that there is nothing in the book that I don't like. I just need a magic wand to be able to crochet them all! But here are my absolute favourites... I'm going to rummage through my yarn to see what different shade of green I have because I need some sprouts in my life! Do you see what I mean about the cuteness of the designs? They are all like that, seriously! If you are a crochet fan, or know someone who is, then I would definitely recommend getting this book. She then explains, with the help of close-up photos, how the same pattern can have dramatically different results depending on the weight of the yarn. With each pattern diagrammed to approach in both rounds and rows, Every Which Way Crochet Borders is an inventive and invaluable resource.
