In this book, you will get a basic introduction to the field of linguistics--its history, its key concepts, its major schools of thought, and how its insights can shed light on various problems in biblical Hebrew and Greek. Faithlife Corporation Social & Historical Approaches to the Bible
Book SynopsisThe Bible was not written and received in a historical vacuum--in fact, the social and historical context of the Bible illuminates key understandings that may have been otherwise missed. Biblical scholars use many different approaches to uncover this context, each engaging various aspects of the social and historical world of the Bible--from religious ritual to scribal practice to historical event. In Social & Historical Approaches to the Bible, you will learn how these methods developed and see how they have been used. You will be introduced to the strengths and weaknesses of each method, so you may understand its benefits as well as see its limitations. Many of these approaches are still in use by biblical scholars today, though often much changed from their earliest form as ideas were revised in light of the challenges and questions posed by further research.

Faithlife Corporation Literary Approaches to the Bible
Book SynopsisThe study of the Bible has long included a literary aspect with great attention paid not only to what was written but also to how it was expressed. The detailed analysis of biblical books and passages as written texts has benefited from the study of literature in classical philology, ancient rhetoric, and modern literary criticism. This volume of the Lexham Methods Series introduces the various ways the study of literature has been used in biblical studies. Most literary approaches emphasize the study of the text alone—its structure, its message, and its use of literary devices—rather than its social or historical background. The methods described in Literary Approaches to the Bible are focused on different ways of analyzing the text within its literary context. Some of the techniques have been around for centuries, but the theories of literary critics from the early 20th century to today had a profound impact on biblical interpretation. In this book, you will learn about those literary approaches, how they were adapted for biblical studies, and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Faithlife Corporation Faith Amid the Ruins
Book SynopsisIf God asked you to live faithfully in the midst of upheaval, even if the cost was high, how would you respond? What if he made extraordinary and difficult demands? The prophet Habakkuk struggled with these very questions as he tried to follow God step-by-step during a time of unrest."Living by faith" sounds great on the surface, but when we face hardship and opposition, it's easy to seek security and stability instead of God's will. In Faith Amid the Ruins, Heath Thomas walks us through the book of Habakkuk, revealing the heart of this story about living by faith in light of God's own faithfulness toward us.Trade ReviewFaith Amid the Ruins is an extraordinary little book. In it, Heath Thomas reveals the theological center of Habakkuk: God calls us to be faithful even in the midst of the most difficult social and political circumstances, and makes our fidelity possible through his own faithfulness toward us. I can't imagine a more timely message for global Christians today.--Bruce Ashford, author of Every Square Inch and One Nation Under God"This is a fine short commentary on Habakkuk for Christian readers who want to understand the fascinating little prophetic book of Habakkuk, and use it as part of their Christian faith and discipleship. Heath not only brings his deep scholarship to it but also his experience as a teacher, a parent, and a Christian leader. The book is an informative guide, but more, a help to self-knowledge and devotion. I recommend it warmly."--J. Gordon McConville, professor of Old Testament theology, University of Gloucestershire"In his commentary on Habakkuk, Heath Thomas provides an accessible introduction to this short but relevant prophetic book. His theological and interpretive essays orient all readers to the riches of this book and its relevance for the Christian life today."--Mark J. Boda, professor of Old Testament, McMaster Divinity College, McMaster University

Faithlife Corporation Together for the World
Book SynopsisThe disciples and early Christians faced doubt, opposition, and threats--just like many Christians do today. In Together with the World, Michael Wagenman shows how the book of Acts can help modern Christians respond to crisis and critique in our contemporary world. The book of Acts is about more than simply the beginning of church history. In Together for the World we find a group of disciples, empowered by the Holy Spirit, following God's call to spread the good news.Trade ReviewIn this lively and lucid little book, Michael Wagenman teaches the book of Acts under the conviction that God is a missionary God who intends for his people to be a missionary people. Under the leadership of Christ and the empowerment of the Spirit, we, His people, are called to bring our neighbors and indeed entire societies into a missionary encounter with the gospel. Highly recommended.--Bruce Ashford, author of Every Square Inch and One Nation Under God"Fresh and refreshing--a new look at Acts for everyone from amateur Bible students to biblical scholars."--Leith Anderson, president, National Association of Evangelicals, Washington, D.C."Wagenman successfully displays the unique role of Acts within the Bible, rescues us from a tired reading of Scripture, and helps us to hear its message with fresh ears. Though [Acts is] a well-worn narrative in many churches, Together for the World brings [the book] to life in its ancient and modern contexts, helping the reader to behold Luke's magisterial aims--literally and literarily."--Dru Johnson, professor of biblical and theological studies, The King's College "Dr. Wagenman frames his treatment of Acts around the larger question of the public role of the church within society. While he provides the necessary background treatment to understand the Acts as a unique historical book that continues the Gospel story, Wagenman carefully builds bridges from the first-century context to our own. He convincingly demonstrates how God's story continues to call Christians to come together for the good of the world. Major themes like conflict and power help the reader navigate the ongoing significance of Acts as a book that speaks to where the church is today. This book is not simply a review of the distant past; it is an invitation to listen once again to a message that reveals the Triune God and reminds us of his power to transform individuals and churches to be the dynamic people of God. Wagenman's role as a university chaplain comes through clearly; he is convinced Christianity is public truth that calls for commitment and gives confident hope to the church as she participates in God's ongoing work that restores all that has come under the effects of rebellion against God. Thought-provoking questions encourage the reader to reflect more deeply and then apply Scripture in the real world."--C. Ken Herfst, assistant professor of religion and theology, Redeemer University College"Anyone who reads Michael Wagenman's Together for the World should expect to encounter the book of Acts in a fresh and compelling way. In this readable and relatable introduction to the sequel to Luke's Gospel, Wagenman helps us to see that the Triune God is a missionary God, set on redeeming his entire creation through applying the salvific work of his Son by the Spirit in his Church. We are not only introduced to Acts as a historical and literary book, but also pushed to hear its ongoing message today--a message that calls the church to a public faith, a global mission, and a cruciform life, all for the sake of seeing Christ's kingdom spread throughout the world. I highly recommend it for anyone hoping to hear and embody Acts' message in a 21st-century context."--Matthew Y. Emerson, Ph.D., author of Between the Cross and the Throne"Michael Wagenman introduces the Book of Acts in a lively, informative and accessible manner. He gives us a comprehensive overview of the historical and cultural background, an exploration of key characters and themes, and an engaging discussion of the dynamics of power in relation to suffering and conflict experienced in the early church. There is helpful material on the mission of the church in relation to the mission or Kingdom of God. The work will be useful to those preparing to preach or lead studies on Acts. Above all, the book does what any good introductory study should--it makes one want to delve once again into the text of Acts itself."--The Revd Canon Dr. Timothy Connor. Faithlife Corporation Exodus 19–40: Evangelical Exegetical Commentary
Book SynopsisIn the book of Exodus, the promises to the patriarchs begin to see their fulfillment: Yahweh takes a people for himself and dwells among them. He is not a distant deity, but a God who speaks and acts to deliver his people from oppression. In this two--volume commentary, Eugene Carpenter interacts with the Hebrew text to trace these and other important themes through Exodus. He also discusses how key theological concepts of Exodus continue throughout the Bible and offers suggestions for applying the message of the book to modern-day readers.About the Evangelical Exegetical Commentary Series:The Evangelical Exegetical Commentary series incorporates the latest in critical biblical scholarship and is written from a distinctly evangelical perspective. Each comprehensive volume combines historical and literary explanations with insights for understanding the text within the Bible's larger story and applying it to everyday life.Trade ReviewEugene Carpenter's magnum opus is impressive in its scholarly breadth and depth. This commentary highlights the history and theology of Exodus. In Dr. Carpenter's view, these two are mixed inseparably: 'History cannot be scuttled in Exodus; it is part of the texture and matrix of theological truth.' --Dr. Wayne McCown, provost emeritus, Roberts Wesleyan College, and founding dean emeritus, Northeastern Seminary"The legacy of Gene Carpenter's life and scholarship continue well beyond his years. Few have equaled his tireless commitment to good exegesis and a biblical theology of ministry. Faithlife Corporation Revelation Verse by Verse
Book SynopsisRevelation is like no other book in the New Testament. Its bizarre images need explaining even for seasoned Bible readers, but when we turn to biblical scholars we find that they don't all agree. In Revelation Verse by Verse, Grant R. Osborne offers a clear exposition of the book that takes seriously both its first-century context and what it means today. Where he disagrees with other interpretations of particular images, he briefly mentions them but remains focused on the text throughout. Rather than being a book that stirs up fear, Revelation is instead a hopeful and even devotional book, focused on the certainty of God's bringing his plans to completion, the futility of Satan and his plans, and the glory of the Lamb.Revelation Verse by Verse is the first volume in the Osborne New Testament Commentaries, a new series from noted Bible scholar Grant R. Osborne directed toward pastors and committed laypeople.Trade ReviewA well-known writer of New Testament commentaries tackles a well-known New Testament book. The result is an instructive reading of this often-discussed text. Read Osborne's Commentary on Revelation and learn.--Darrell L. Bock, Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary"Somehow and seemingly at every turn in this most unusual of New Testament books, Grant Osborne has studiously avoided the cliche as well as the trendy. Instead, he has kept a steady eye on the big ideas of Revelation: the Christ of this book is the Lion, the Lamb and the Lord; the victory over evil most assuredly comes from a cosmic battle waged by the Father of the Lord Jesus against evil and all its dominions; and our means to that victory is a Spirit-generated faithful obedience through suffering."--Scot McKnight, Julius R. Mantey Professor in New Testament, Northern Seminary"Many people avoid the book of Revelation because it seems strange and its interpretation is controversial. Grant Osborne brings his many years of intense and intelligent study of Revelation to bear in this compelling reading of this book's powerful vision of Christ's second coming. I recommend it to all readers and especially pastors."--Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College"Grant Osborne has spent his entire professional career teaching and writing about good principles for the interpretation of Scripture and then modeling them in his own scholarship, not least in commentaries on numerous New Testament books. The Osborne New Testament Commentaries, therefore, are a welcome new series by a veteran New Testament scholar determined to spend as much time as God gives him in his retirement years distilling the conclusions of the finest of scholarship without bogging down the reader in the detailed interaction with all the various perspectives that have been suggested. If all the volumes are as good as this inaugural work on Revelation, the series will become a most welcome resource for the busy pastor or teacher." --Craig L. Blomberg, Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Denver Seminary"Grant Osborne has produced a marvelously written volume on the book of Revelation that will be immensely helpful for pastors and church leaders, including both students and teachers of Scripture. Carefully designed and thoughtfully structured, this commentary will enable readers to understand both the historical and textual meaning of this challenging book, as well as to grasp its theological and contemporary significance. It is genuine joy to recommend this fine volume. I pray it will receive the wide readership it deserves."--David S. Dockery, President, Trinity International University"The book of Revelation provides plenty of passages for challenging exegesis and interpretation. In this verse by verse commentary, Grant Osborne does not back away from the often controversial issues, but distills reams of previous material into useful insights and potential, effective teaching points. I am sure that pastors and other lay teachers will benefit greatly from this commentary on Revelation." --Stanley E. Porter, President, Dean, and Professor of New Testament, Roy A. Hope Chair in Christian Worldview, McMaster Divinity College, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada"Revelation is well known for its historical quagmires and hermeneutical imponderables, and is sometimes characterized by idiosyncratic and even perhaps eccentric interpretations. Grant Osborne's thoughtful approach, being fiercely biblical in nature, attempts to strip away what may be modern and superficial in thinking and seeks to unveil the book's central message by placing it into its ancient historical setting." --Barry J. Beitzel, Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"One of our premiere evangelical scholars on the New Testament, Grant Osborne has applied years of his life to the text of the New Testament's most challenging book. Yet his commentary on Revelation is no ivory-tower tome. The rich, deep-rooted research on display here weaves its way through a down-to-earth prose that is at once wonderfully accessible and devotional, sure to stretch the minds and warm the hearts of Christian leaders and laypeople alike." --George H. Guthrie, Benjamin W. Perry Professor of Bible, Union University"Revelation is the most confusing and the least taught, read, or studied book in the Bible. It also has the most radically different interpretations by pastors and scholars. FINALLY, Dr. Osborne has provided a most effective, easy to comprehend, and qualitative orthodox interpretation of the book of Revelation. Dr. Osborne is conservatively trained and prophetically insightful and sensitive--a rare and valuable combination. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How can you effectively understand the book of Revelation? One verse at a time. Dr. Osborne's verse-by-verse interpretation is a must-read and must-study for pastors, scholars, and the laity, each of whom will solve the confusion by reading this commentary." --Raleigh B. Washington, President and CEO, Promise Keepers

Throughout, he makes clear that everything we are and have is ours only "in Christ."In Ephesians Verse by Verse, Grant R. Osborne offers a clear exposition of this letter that takes seriously both its first--century context and what it means for us today. Osborne seeks to carefully exposit the text in plain language, bringing out the treasures in each book and making them accessible for today's readers.Trade ReviewGrant Osborne's Ephesians: Verse by Verse is a commentary written by a churchman, for the church. Lucid and engaging, the exposition helpfully unpacks Paul's letter in a way that dense logical arguments become clear and hard-to-understand theological concepts are made accessible. Especially praiseworthy is the way Dr. Osborne walks the reader through sometimes divisive passages, summarizing and explaining clearly various interpretive positions. His arguments are consistently fair-minded and balanced, instructive as well as applicable to modern life. Here pastors and other students of God's Word will find a rich resource for navigating Paul's Ephesians.--George H. Guthrie, Benjamin W. Perry Professor of Bible, Union University"As a pastor, I have often turned to Osborne's work not only for sermon preparation but personal study. Osborne has a way of balancing academic work and an emphasis on practical application from the biblical truth he is expounding. This truly is a great resource for all Christians wanting to study Ephesians."--Cody Kargus, senior pastor, Maranatha Evangelical Free Church (Rice Lake, WI)"A clear and powerful exposition of Ephesians. This commentary has succeeded in explaining how the Triune God works to bring about our salvation and how Christians are to live individually and as a church under the lordship of Christ. The last section on our spiritual warfare is described very vividly and practically. A must-have for Bible study and sermon preparation."--Janson Chan, executive director, Timothy Training International"Dr. Grant R. Osborne is well-known to have invested his entire life in the study and explication of the New Testament. His many writings reflect the detailed breadth and depth of his involvement with the text, but in this series, he seeks to complement much of his other work by removing the complexity of many modern commentaries. Here, he provides an easy-to-read explanation of Ephesians and applies its teachings to our lives today. Anyone interested in the mission and writings of the Apostle Paul will find this work to be personally enriching and refreshing indeed."--Barry J. Faithlife Corporation Glimpsing the Mystery
Book SynopsisThe stories in the first half of the book of Daniel are Sunday School favorites, and the visions of the second half are sometimes hard to understand. How do either of them relate to the world today, with its frequent news of conflict, injustice, and human suffering? In Glimpsing the Mystery, Barbara M. Leung Lai succinctly takes readers through Daniel, showing throughout how God responds to the needs of his people in difficult times. In a world that seems out of control, God provides glimpses into the mystery of his glory and sovereignty, showing that he has not stopped working and reassuring us that he is still the God of gods and Lord of lords. It is a message that is as necessary today as it was in Daniel's time.Trade ReviewA lucid treatise on the profound yet enigmatic book of Daniel, leading readers soaring high to a panoramic view of the sovereignty of God in human history, coming down deep into the inner world of Daniel the person and the Jewish community, and experiencing its messages from the past in today's perplexed world.--Rev. Terence Lau, Ph.D., minister-at-large, Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada"The book of Daniel has an important message for Christians today who live in cultures that are toxic to their faith. Daniel himself lived in such a culture and shows how faith can thrive even when threatened by the world around us. The book of Daniel also reminds us again and again that in spite of difficulties, God is in control and will have the final victory. Barbara M. Leung Lai brings her considerable knowledge and clear insight into her concise yet substantial presentation of the book. I recommend Glimpsing the Mystery to all who not only want to understand the book of Daniel better, but also have it transform their lives and faith."--Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College"For many, the Book of Daniel seems largely enigmatic and incomprehensible. In this volume, Dr. Barbara Leung Lai takes this challenging book and ably opens it up for the contemporary reader. Through an analysis of the book's historical context, literary forms, theological emphases, and most especially of the character of Daniel as presented in the book, she leads her readers to an understanding of how they too can appropriate the message of Daniel in their own experiential context. Her discussion of the book's portrait of both the public and private life of Daniel is especially compelling, as are her own personal reflections on how she has wrestled with the book's theological message in her own experience. The discussion and study questions at the end of each chapter make the book an excellent resource for students and group Bible studies. Dr. Leung Lai helps her readers grasp the core values of the book, and their significance for life today."--John Kessler, professor of Old Testament and chair of biblical studies, Tyndale Seminary, Toronto

Jewish Lights Publishing Masking and Unmasking Ourselves: Interpreting
Book SynopsisOur clothes conceal our naked bodies but what do they reveal about our souls?"Clothes assume a primary importance as a vehicle that suggests character, provides insights into a person''s identity and even governs it. But the problem is that if Oscar Wilde is correct that ''if you give a man a mask, he will tell you the truth,'' then what exactly conveys the truth? Is it the person him or herself or is it the mask, the clothing that he or she wears, that reveals deeper images of self?"from the IntroductionIn this highly engaging look at clothing and identity in the Bible, renowned teacher and scholar Norman Cohen presents ten Bible stories that involve clothing in an essential way, as a means of learning about the text, its characters and their interactions. But he also shows us how these stories help us confront our own life dramas, our own stories, ourselves. In doing so, he once again presents the Bible as a mirror, reflecting back to us our own personalities, ambivalences, struggles and potential for growth. By helping us uncover the garments of the Bible, Cohen shows us how to shed our own layers of insulation to reveal our authentic selves.

Medieval Institute Publications The Old English Hexateuch: Aspects and Approaches
Book SynopsisCotton Claudius B.iv, an illustrated Old English Hexateuch that is among the treasures of the British Library, contains one of the first extended projects of translation of the Bible in a European vernacular. Its over four hundred images make it one of the most extensively illustrated books to survive from the early Middle Ages and preserve evidence of the creativity of the Anglo-Saxon artist and his knowledge of other important early medieval picture cycles. In addition, the manuscript contains the earliest copy of Ælfric’s Preface to Genesis, a work that discusses issues of translation and interpretation.Table of ContentsManuscript Sigla List of Figures Acknowledgments List of Abbreviations Introduction: Aspects and Approaches by Rebecca Barnhouse and Benjamin C. Medieval Institute Publications On the Truth of Holy Scripture
Book SynopsisWyclif sought the restoration of an idealized past even if that meant taking revolutionary steps in the present to recover what had been lost. His 1377-78 On the Truth of Holy Scripture represents such an effort in reform: the recognition of the inherent perfection and veracity of the Sacred Page which serves as the model for daily conduct, discourse, and worship, thereby forming the foundation upon which Christendom itself is to be ordered.Table of ContentsPrefaceIntroductionPart One: The Veracity of ScripturePart Two: The Authority of ScripturePart Three: The Divine Origin of ScripturePart Four: Scripture as the Law of ChristendomSelected Bibliography

Medieval Institute Publications The Glossa Ordinaria on the Song of Songs
Book SynopsisIn this translation of glosses on the Song of Songs, Mary Dove offers a readily accessible and inexpensive resource for students and scholars. Anselm of Laon, possibly assisted by his brother Ralph, is credited with compiling the Glossa Ordinaria on the Song of Songs, drawing from earlier commentaries by Origen, Gregory the Great, Bede, Alcuin, Hrabanus Maurus, Haimo of Auxerre, and Robert of Tombelaine as well as contributing his own readings of the text. As Dove notes in her introduction, the text is quite complicated, with each manuscript page divided into three columns - the biblical text in large letters in the center column, with space left for interlinear glosses, and glosses in smaller letters in both the right- and left-hand columns. (This format is not reproduced in this translation.) The number of surviving manuscripts (over seventy) shows that plenty of readers enjoyed the challenges the text offered, and for modern readers, the Glossa Ordinaria is the first place to go to find medieval interpretation of biblical texts.Table of ContentsAbbreviationsIntroductionPrefacesChapter 1 Chapter 2Chapter 3Chapter 4Chapter 5Chapter 6Chapter 7Chapter 8NotesBibliography

Medieval Institute Publications The Seven Seals of the Apocalypse: Medieval Texts
Book SynopsisFilling today's religious book market are Apocalypse commentaries teaching that the seven seals of Revelation 5-8 describe tragedies that are to take place in the last days. Medieval Europeans, on the other hand, thought very differently about the seven seals. Some used the seven seals for catechetical purposes and associated them with seven major events in the life of Christ or seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Other medieval writers taught that the seven seals contained symbols about life in the church between the first and second comings of Christ. Still others viewed the seals as milestones in the grand outline of salvation history. This book illustrates this vastness of medieval interpretive tradition on the seven seals. It includes fifteen texts from the sixth through the fifteenth centuries, which have been organized under three headings: those illustrating christological interpretations of the seven seals, those proposing ecclesiastical interpretations, and those giving historical interpretations.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Abbreviations Introduction Part 1 Christological Interpretations of the Seven Seals Apringius of Beja, Tract on the Apocalypse Pseudo-Alcuin, On the Seven Seals Irish Reference Bible Celtic Catechism Hugh of Saint Cher, Exposition on the Apocalypse Nicholas of Gorran, On the Apocalypse of the Apostle John Part 2 Ecclesiastical Interpretations of the Seven Seals Caesarius of Arles, Exposition of the Apocalypse Cassiodorus, Brief Explanations of the Apocalypse Pseudo-Jerome, Handbook on the Apocalypse Alcuin of York, Question and Answer Manual on the Apocalypse Part 3 Historical Interpretations of the Seven Seals Joachim of Fiore, On the Seven Seals Vital du Four, Commentaries on the Apocalypse The Confession of Prous Boneta Peter Auriol, Compendium on Holy Scripture Giovanni Nanni, Gloss on the Apocalypse Notes Bibliography

Medieval Institute Publications The Glossa Ordinaria on Romans
Book SynopsisThe Gloss on Romans is a collection of sources from many periods and places, which accounts for its inconsistencies. And this is what gives the Gloss much of its charm ... The twelfth century was an age of gathering sources and commentaries, in theology (Lombard's Sentences), canon law (Gratian's Decretum), and biblical studies (the Glossa ordinaria). Education began to flourish into what would become universities, where the master's role was to elucidate traditional, authoritative texts. And chief among these was the Bible, not standing alone but with the accompanying Gloss." - from the introductionTable of ContentsAbbreviations Introduction Prefatory Material Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Notes
