Peeters Publishers Exclusivity and Variety: Perspectives on
Book SynopsisThe present state of the exegetical discipline is characterized in this book by the exploration of the concepts exclusivity and variety. There is variety not only in the numerous methods and approaches, but also in variants in methodological application, hermeneutical presuppositions, confessional and dogmatic specialization areas and the increasingly volume of scholarly literature. To escape the abyss of variety, exegetes often resort to exclusivistic claims, sometimes deliberately. The main interest of this book is methodological, with the implication that the discussion is limited to the variety of exegetical methodologies. The working hypothesis is that a multidimensional and/or integrational aproach to exegesis can evade the dangers of exclusivity and variety. Various theoretical guidelines, which should be taken into consideration in this discussion, are filtered out from previous attempsts in this regard. Two methodologies, namely a historical-critical one and a narrative one, are used as examples in this investigation. In order to investigate the practical implementation of these methodologies, the Samson Cycle (Judges 13-16) is analyzed. Subsequently, both methodologies are evaluated to the theoretical guidelines formulated earlier. The multidimensional and/or integrational possibilities of these methodologies are then scrutinized. The investigation leads to the formulation of three models which may serve as guidelines for further discussion on this topic. Preference is given to an adapted communication model which serves as a hermeneutical 'map' on which exegetical methodologies can be 'plotted'. It is proposed that the operative factor of such a communication model is a reading strategy which consists of two components, namely (I) a specialized component and (II) a competence component.

Peeters Publishers Poetry of Hadewijch
Book SynopsisThe Stanzaic Poems, written by Hadewijch of Antwerp in the 13th century, are a body of 45 lyrical poems in stanzas. They are daring God-talk in the guise of courtly love songs. Hadewijch uses the linguistic style of chivalry but her poems are by no means courtly poetry. She shifts the current meaning of chivalry by transferring its context to a field of meaning focused on God. Because of the view of Minne (=love) that is embodied in them, the Stanzaic Poems are an exponent of the age old tradition of women's songs - of which the Song of Songs is the best known example - and as such they are an expression of a particular manner of keeping company with God: they celebrate a relationship of mutuality between partners equivalent in love. An introductory essay highlights some of the striking points of lovers: the raging desire of 'orewoet': the gentility of humankind's origin. This essay is followed by a rendering of the Stanzaic Poems from Middle-Dutch into Modern English prose. With an introduction by Edward Schillebeeckx.

Peeters Publishers Lamentations
Book SynopsisThe Historical Commentary on the Old Testament is an international series of commentaries which devotes explicit attention to the history of interpretation of biblical tradition in all its stages, both within and without the Hebrew canon. The commentary stands in the Christian exegetical tradition. In Lamentations the treatment of every pericope is preceded by a new translation and a section called "Essentials and Perspectives" in which the author summarizes the results of the exegesis in non-technical language. The present commentary on Lamentations distinguishes itself by the fact that it is clearly and explicitly based on the songs understood as an interactive unity, one in which it would appear that the songs provide comment and explanation on one another. The result is a commentary full of exegetical surprises which frequently departs from the traditional.

Book SynopsisThe fifth volume in the series Documenta Q is concerned with the reconstruction of the Q text behind Luke 22:28, 30 par. Matt 19:28. The International Q Project's presentation of the critical text of Q 22:28, 30, together with the exhaustive history of research on which it is based, will enhance considerably research in the Sayings Gospel Q, the historical Jesus, and New Testament christology. Further, nowhere else in the Synoptic tradition is the claim of the Jesus movement regarding Israel stated more clearly than in Q 22:28, 30. The database and evaluations are an expanded and revised version of those presented and discussed at the meeting of the International Q Project in Chigaco 1994. Just prior to the bibliography at the conclusion of the volume the resultant critical text of Q 22:28, 30 is printed. This Greek text is followed by English, German and French translations. (Lucan chapter and verse numeration is used as a convenience and a mere convention.)

Peeters Publishers Isaiah II. Volume 2 / Isaiah 28-39
Book SynopsisThe Historical Commentary on the Old Testament is an international series of commentaries which devotes explicit attention to the history of interpretation of biblical tradition in all its stages, both within and without the Hebrew canon. As the term 'Old Testament' indicates, the commentary stands in the Christian exegetical tradition. The team of those who committed themselves to contribute comprises scholars from all over the world and from many different churches and denominations. The commentary is intended not only for Old Testament scholars, but also for ministers and other interested parties. The treatment of every pericope is preceded by a new translation and a section called 'Essentials and Perspectives' in which the author summarizes the results of the exegesis in non-technical language. The primacy here is assigned to the final stage of the text. The summary should incite the user to consult the main body of the exegesis which is headed 'Scholary Expositon'. Here the approach is that of modern critical scholarship.

Peeters Publishers Narrativity in Biblical and Related Texts. La
Book SynopsisSeventeen innovative studies are collected in this volume which has been produced under the aegis of the Centre for Biblical Studies, University of Manchester, and L'Institut des sciences bibliques, Universite de Lausanne. The majority of the studies engage with narrative through providing insightful working examples. Building on the many contributions of recent narratological research, for the most part the studies in this collection avoid the technical language of narratology as they present fresh insights at many levels. Some essays focus more on the implied author, some on the implied reader or hearer, and some on the way particular messages are constructed; some of the studies consider how author, message and reader are all interconnected. There are several creative proposals for refining genre definition, from law and wisdom to gospel and apocryphal writings. Some studies highlight the way in which narratives can contain ethical, religious, and cultural messages. Sensitivity to narrative is also shown by some contributors to expose in intruing ways the redactional processes behind the final form of texts. Students of narrative in the ancient world will find much to consider in this book, and others engaged with literary studies more generally will discover that scholars of the worlds of the Bible and Late Antiquity have much to offer them.

Peeters Publishers About the Idol Offerings: Rhetoric, Social
Book SynopsisPaul's exposition "About the Idol Offerings" in chapters 8-10 of his 'First Letter to the Corinthians' is a fascinating text. Rhetoric is the first reason for this. Sustained attention to the disposition of this apparently rambling text reveals a coherent and persuasive discourse. It comes as a surprise and a pleasure, then, to see an able communicator at work and to find oneself as a partner in the discussion. The social context is the second reason why Paul's exposition is such an interesting subject. The real point at issue is the position which the nascent Christian community should take within the urban society of the city of Corinth. Paul and the believers at Corinth are engaged in a dispute concerning social seclusion or integration. We hear their different voices and listen in to their discussion. Theology forms the third clue to the interest of this text. Here we encounter an unmistakably Jewish Paul, for whom the Shema is his basic rule of faith: Hear Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. In the same breath, however, he adds to this the confession of Jesus Christ as the One Lord. The resulting tension between Jews and Christians has brought about a tragic history. We still have to learn how to live this relationship in a positive way.

Peeters Publishers Portrait of a Villain: Laban the Aramean in
Book SynopsisThis book attempts to answer the question of why Laban the Aramean, a rather harmless character as presented in the biblical text, is generally portrayed in rabbinic literature as a major enemy of Jacob and Israel. It is argued that the portrait of Laban as a villain developed as a result of rabbinic hermeneutics, and that the characteristics which are attributed to him in rabbinic literature were not arbitrarily chosen due to a particular interest in his person or a wish to endow him with a certain set of negative characteristics. It rather derives from interaction between the rabbis and the biblical text in a process where the rabbis filled in gaps that they perceived in the biblical text and explained inconsistencies with material provided by the Bible itself and by material taken from their ideological code. The book draws attention to the role that exegesis of the Bible played in the formation of the opinions and world view of the rabbis as well as the inseparability of exegesis and ideology.

Book SynopsisThis seventh volume in the Documenta Q series is concerned with the reconstruction of the Q text behind Luke 7:1-10 par. Matt 7:28a, 8:5-13. The Centurion's Faith has always been a key passage for theories of the development and transmission of gospel sayings traditions.

Peeters Publishers Ein Held Des Glaubens?: Rezeptionsgeschichtliche

Peeters Publishers Hamam - Commentary on the Book of Proverbs:
Book SynopsisThis is the first translation of the late ninth-century Armenian commentary on the Book of Proverbs by Hamam, who is better known for his commentary on grammar. Armenian biblical exegesis is a little explored field, and this is one of the earliest surviving examples of the commentary genre. The text survives in a single manuscript, first published in Erevan in 1994. The Armenian text presented here is re-edited on the basis of a new reading of Matenadaran 1151. In the introduction Professor Thomson places this commentary in the context of Armenian theological tradition, contrasting Hamam's approach with the few surviving earlier Armenian biblical commentaries. He also notes the differences between Hamam and the previous major Greek and Syrian patristic commentators. The notes to the English translation elucidate textual and other problems. Two later Armenian commentaries on Proverbs exist, by Nerses of Lambron and Grigor of Tat'ev. Parallels and differences between the three texts are highlighted and discussed. This is a significant contribution to an aspect of Armenian theological tradition which has been little studied, but is now attracting increasing attention.

Peeters Publishers 1 Chronicles
Book SynopsisDuring the last few decades there has been a growing scholarly interest in the Book(s) of Chronicles, which resulted in a respectable number of commentaries in various languages. Yet, the book remains inviting for further study and research. The present commentary is a result of it. It attempts to understand the Book of Chronicles as an expression of the author's religious conviction and piety in the context of the late Persian period, which provided him with the reason and stimulans for writing this work as a religious appeal to his readers. His (assumed) intention is determinative of both the contents and the structure of the work, and in a number of cases contributes to a better understanding of smaller textual units. An extensive introduction deals among others with the writer's purpose and with some themes which occur throughout the book.

Peeters Publishers Evangelium Iohannis Aethiopicum: T.
Book SynopsisIn this volume is presented, for the first time, a critical edition of the earliest retrievable text (i.e., the "Versio Antiqua") of the Gospel of John in Classical Ethiopic (Ge'ez). Altogether 21 manuscripts have been collated, representing four different text types and, for the first two of these, three and four sub-types respectively. The "Versio Antiqua" is represented by the first text type, of which, for the most part, the important Mss Abba Garima I and III, dated to 1270 or earlier, have been employed for the basic text. Five appendices are also included, in the last of which is supplied a collation of the "Versio Antiqua" with the critical apparatus of the 27th edition of "Novum Testamentum Graece". This volume, consequently, should prove useful to anyone interested in textual criticism of the New Testament, the textual history of the Ethiopic Gospel of John, or Ge'ez literature generally.

Peeters Publishers Paul and God's Temple
Book SynopsisPaul addresses his readers as God's Temple in his Letters to the Corinthians, which are among the earliest documents of Christianity. This volume provides a synthesis of the historical and exegetical dimensions to Paul's cultic imagery. Previous theories (spiritualisation, substitution, comparative religions approach) cannot stand in view of the analysis of the broader historical context as well as reconsideration of Paul's theological perspective. This historical interpretation integrates relevant Qumran texts published since the 1990's, insights about the early Jesus-movement's Jewish origins, and canonical as well as extra-canonical Gospels in the discussion about cultic imagery. "Paul and God's Temple" sheds new light on Paul's relation to contemporary Judaism and temple-theological traditions, while putting Paul's cultic imagery in a rhetorical-critical and reader-oriented perspective.

Peeters Publishers Severe D'Antioche: Fragments Grecs Tires Des

Peeters Publishers Dreams and Scripture in Luke-acts: Collected
Book SynopsisThe studies (seven articles in English and two in German) presented in this volume will give some insight into Luke's way of dealing with certain literary traditions available to him and to his audience. They try to determine something of the relation between the Luke-Acts in general or a special passage in particular and the biblical associations in his Hellenistic environment. Such is the limited goal of this collection of essays; nothing more, nothing less. If one theme should prevail in this volume, it might be the connection between interpretation of Scripture and the phenomenon of dreams. In some of the articles, the author deals quite explicitly with the combination of dream and Scripture, in others only with the interpretation of Scripture. When dealing with the interpretation of Scripture in other articles, the connection with other types of divine communication is sometimes mentioned in passing. The essays collected here help readers find their way through the endless fabric of Luke's interpretation of the events concerning Jesus and his disciples in the light of biblical and classical wisdom traditions.

Peeters Publishers The Trial and Death of Jesus
Book SynopsisWhat is the significance of the trial and death of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark? In its annual meetings the Mark Group of the Society of Biblical Literature studied the trial of Jesus in 2003 and the death of Jesus in 2004. Both speakers and audience expressed the desire to bring some of the papers together in book form. The current volume fulfills this wish. The contributions presented here represent an up to date expression of one of the most important themes in Markan exegesis. The editors use the metaphor of a prism to illustrate the two sections of the book. Like a concave prism spreading light, the first section presents a range of understandings of the meaning of the death of Jesus. Like a convex prism focusing light, the second section uses multiple methodologies to focus attention on the trial of Jesus, particularly the charge of blasphemy. The papers together raise questions, challenge common views, and interrelate themes that push Markan scholarship forward.

Peeters Publishers Nerses of Lambron. Commentary on the Revelation
Book SynopsisNerses of Lambron (1153-1198) is one of the most significant figures in Armenian literature and ecclesiastical history. As author of numerous biblical commentaries and translator of legal and other texts he is noted as a prolific scholar, and as Archbishop of Tarsus he played a major role in the religious life of Cilician Armenia. In 1179 he made a new translation of the Book of Revelation, not unknown earlier in Armenia but not yet integrated into the Armenian canon of scripture. In the same year he adapted the Greek "Commentary on Revelation" by Andreas of Caesarea with appropriate additions and changes to reflect Armenian tradition. In this first translation of the Armenian text (based on the 1855 edition with a comparison of the copy made in 1284 by the noted Esayi Nc'ec'i), R.W. Thomson emphasizes the differences between Nerses' adaptation and the original Greek, and places this reworking in the context of the Armenian-Byzantine discussions on possible reunion of the churches. In the Introduction he studies the use of the Book of Revelation in Armenia prior to Nerses, reviews Nerses' career, and highlights the theological characteristics of the adaptation.

Peeters Publishers On the Trail of the Septuagint Translators:
Book SynopsisThe essays of this revised and expanded collection were written by Prof. Anneli Aejmelaeus over a period of 25 years. The thread that runs through all these essays and holds the collection together is translation technique, which is characterized as a central aspect of methodology rather than an object of study. Only by tracing the trail of the Septuagint translators is it possible to gain a reliable picture of the different translators and of the Hebrew Vorlage their work was based on. The themes dealt with in the individual essays range from the study of syntactical features of the Greek language used in the Septuagint to the quest for the correct understanding of the underlying Hebrew, from the overall description of the translation character of certain biblical books to the application of translation technical data in textual criticism of the Hebrew text, and from methodological questions to the discussion of theological interpretation by the translators, reflecting the ongoing discussion in the international field of Septuagint studies and representing a significant and distinctive critical position in it.
