Cambridge University Press Women in the Earliest Churches 59 Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series Series Number 59
Book SynopsisThis book examines the roles and functions that women assumed in the early Christian communities from AD 33 to the Council of Nicaea. It surveys, too, the views about women held by various New Testament authors including Paul and the Evangelists. In a careful and judicious study, Ben Witherington shows that early Christianity was neither unreservedly patriarchal nor adamantly feminist in its view of women and their roles, but rather charted a middle course which combined a reforming of the predominantly patriarchal framework of society with an affirmation of new religious roles for women. Now available in paperback, this is the first book to survey such a large amount of material exegetically, and make use, at the same time, of original languages and texts.Trade Review'The most significant study to be written on the women question so far ... no serious debate about the Biblical teaching on women can now take place without taking into account the range of material and conclusions in this book.' Christian Book News'It presents a full and impartial discussion of material which is often used selectively and polemically in contemporary debate.' The Expository Times'The best and fairest discussion of the horrendously controversial issue of the place of women in early Christianity.' Journal of Ecclesiastical History'Commendable for its thoroughness and rejection of ideological '. Religious Studies ReviewTable of ContentsPreface; Abbreviations; Introduction; 1. Cambridge University Press The Cambridge Biblical Hebrew Workbook Introductory Level
Book SynopsisThis workbook can be used together with any elementary Biblical Hebrew grammar, by students at colleges, seminaries or universities. It applies many of the tools of modern language acquisition to make learning this classical language an active and inspiring process. Well-known Hebrew names are used as a pedagogical aid to memorising grammar and vocabulary. Original biblical texts are focused upon. The exercises are based on a stock of frequently used words which is gradually enlarged. The vocabulary and grammar learnt early on are regularly revised and reinforced in later exercises. The student is carefully guided through the exercises by means of boxed notes on key points. A key to the exercises is included. The translations provided follow the Hebrew text very closely. This workbook enables students to develop their understanding of the general systematic sound changes in Biblical Hebrew, progressively providing a stable foundation and deeper insight into the language.Trade Review'These text samples are well chosen, and are annotated with supplementary new vocabulary, and guidelines on how to make optimal use of them. The workbook contains a number of other user-friendly devices … Exploration of the layout and variety of exercises contained in this workbook shows that much care and practical experience has gone into the production of this excellent tool, and that the author has neither oversimplified nor unduly complicated the endeavour of learning Biblical Hebrew for beginning students. She has provided an excellent alternative approach, and enriched this with numerous practical exercises, which, if faithfully and systematically carried out, should produce a rich harvest.' Cambridge University Press The New Testament Concept of Witness 31 Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series Series Number 31
Book SynopsisTerms like 'witness' and 'testimony' occur frequently in religious contexts and have special significance there, culminating in the development of the Greek martus (witness) into the English 'martyr'. They also have a legal context, and Professor Trites examines their use in the New Testament in the light of ancient legal practice. The author argues that the idea of witness is a live metaphor in the New Testament, to be understood in terms of the Old Testament legal assembly, though the Greek lawcourts are also relevant. The witness theme is developed in a sustained way in John, Acts and Revelation, and is also used in the Synoptic Gospels, the Pastoral and General Epistles, and Hebrews. In contexts of persecution and suffering the forensic metaphors tend to be identified with military ones, but in principle they are quite distinct. Professor Trites contends that the idea of witness in relation to Christ and his gospel plays an essential part in the New Testament and in Christian faithTable of ContentsPreface; Abbreviations; 1. Cambridge University Press Matthew and Paul A Comparison of Ethical Perspectives 48 Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series Series Number 48
Book SynopsisThe purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the basic structures of Matthew's and Paul's ethics, rather than to deal in detail with their teaching on specific moral issues. Dr Mohrlang discusses their perspectives under the five headings of 'law', 'reward and punishment', 'relationship to Christ and the role of grace', 'love', and 'inner forces', and gives special attention to the question of ethical motivation. There is no absolute contrast, however, since elements both of law and of grace are found in both writers, and for both it is their understanding of Christ that is decisive. The comparison is highly illuminating, and serves to throw into clear relief the more striking characteristics of each writer's ethical system. It should prove of considerable value to students both of New Testament ethics and of Matthean and Pauline theology and to those interested in the larger question of unity and diversity in the New Testament as a whole.Table of ContentsPreface; Abbreviations; Introduction; 1. Law; 2. Reward and punishment; 3. Relationship to Christ and the Role of Grace; 4. Love; 5. Inner forces; Conclusion; Notes; Bibliography; Index of scripture references; General index.
