Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Die Briefe an Timotheus und Titus: Die Pastoralbriefe
Book SynopsisFor a long time, the pastoral epistles were considered evidence of how the Pauline tradition had become flattened after Paul's death and adjusted to the conditions of the world. The research assumed that the three letters came from the pen of a single Paulus student who wanted to call Paul out of the grave and speak into his own time. This comment shows that neither is true. If one reads the pastoral epistles as three independent writings by different authors, one realizes that each individual letter expresses Paul's heritage in such a way that it is heard. If the letter of Titus is aimed at Crete in a debate with Jewish opponents, the 2nd letter of Timothy acts as a document of an inner-Pauline school discourse in Asia Minor. The most recent of the three writings is 1 Timothy; he knows the other two texts and sharpens their content for his antignostic struggle. All three letters feel committed to the Pauline tradition - and at the same time show that whoever wants to remain true to this heritage must change it.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Das Neue Testament Deutsch

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG A Forceful and Fruitful Verse: Genesis 1:28 in
Book SynopsisBe fruitful and multiply is a verse with a storied history. Whether in theology or natural law, this much-debated verses explosive potential had gone largely dormant prior to the Reformation. For Luther, however, in the context of the debate surrounding monastic vows, this verse would once again take on new life. Fueled by the contributions of his fellow reformers especially with regard to the normative nature of mans sexuality a powerful new understanding of this verse emerged. This new understanding, a synthesis of Luthers own scriptural understanding coupled with powerful natural-philosophical insight from Melanchthon, would go on to play a significant role as former celibates abandoned their vows. It would also offer normative shape to the contours of Reformation marriage even as it took its place in such important works as the Augsburg Confession and Melanchthons Apology.

Peter Lang AG Osternacht Und Altes Testament: Studien Und

The University of Chicago Press Gilgamesh Epic and Old Testament Parallels
Book SynopsisCuneiform records made some three thousand years ago are the basis for this essay on the ideas of death and the afterlife and the story of the flood which were current among the ancient peoples of the Tigro-Euphrates Valley. With the same careful scholarship shown in his previous volume, The Babylonian Genesis, Heidel interprets the famous Gilgamesh Epic and other related Babylonian and Assyrian documents. He compares them with corresponding portions of the Old Testament in order to determine the inherent historical relationship of Hebrew and Mesopotamian ideas.

The University of Chicago Press Profaning Paul
Book SynopsisA critical reconsideration of the repeated use of the biblical letters of Paul. The letters of Paul have been used to support and condone a host of evils over the span of more than two millennia: racism, slavery, imperialism, misogyny, and anti-Semitism, to name a few. Despite, or in some cases because of, this history, readers of Paul have felt compelled to reappropriate his letters to fit liberal or radical politics, seeking to set right the evils done in Paul's name. Starting with the language of excrement, refuse, and waste in Paul's letters, Profaning Paul looks at how Paul's shit is recycled and reconfigured. It asks why readers, from liberal Christians to academic biblical scholars to political theorists and philosophers, feel compelled to make Paul into a hero, mining his words for wisdom. Following the lead of feminist, queer, and minoritized scholarship, Profaning Paul asks what would happen if we stopped recycling Paul's writings. By profaning the status of his letters as sacred texts, we might open up new avenues for imagining political figurations to meet our current and coming political, economic, and ecological challenges. Trade Review"In pushing back against efforts by both theologians and philosophers to contextualize and explain Paul’s words, Concannon points out harmful passages in Paul’s seminal writings, including his message for slaves to obey masters and his calls for women to submit. . . . This heady blend of Continental philosophy, biblical studies, and critical theory will be sure to spark debate among scholars grappling with Paul and his legacy." * Publishers Weekly *"Concannon’s Profaning Paul is likely the first work of biblical criticism that begins in an outhouse and ends in a garbage heap. Its references to waste offer laugh-out-loud moments throughout its provocative work, which concentrates on modern interpretations of the Pauline epistles... a fascinating, entertaining book for spiritual seekers who are willing to get their hands dirty." * Foreword Reviews *"In this important book, Concannon argues that the problems of Paul's canonical letters render his archive garbage. . . . For Concannon, profaning the sacred status of Paul's letters rather than protecting it is more politically intriguing and generative. He provides an extensive critique of the way Paul fostered racism and slavery, and he shows how Paul speaks negatively of his bodily realities while idealizing a spiritual body after death. Concannon finds that feminist and queer scholars have rightly recognized Paul as a political problem. Overall, the argument of this book is erudite. . . . Recommended." * Choice *"Concannon is erudite, highly intelligent, and well-read, and this book is the product of many years of reflection (digestion?)." * Reading Religion *"In this affectively sensitive and thoroughly thought-provoking study, the author compellingly engages a range of resources, including critical feminist, queer, postcolonial, and race studies as well as new materialism and continental philosophy. By the conclusion, it is evident that there is fecundity in the rubbish pile and new ways of reading Paul by refusing Paul." * The Bible and Critical Theory *"A wonderfully vivid writer, Concannon weighs his argument carefully. He does not exactly blame Paul for holding views shared by most of his contemporaries. Instead, he questions why such a person should hold moral authority today. " * Christian Century *“Readable and fascinating, Profaning Paul represents the most interesting work within the meeting place of biblical studies and cultural studies and theory. Concannon’s close readings of philosophers and scholars are responsible and attentive, his critiques are satisfying, and the take-aways are plentiful.” -- Maia Kotrosits, author of The Lives of Objects“Extraordinarily learned and perfectly clear, Profaning Paul counts the high cost of the refusal to allow Paul and his letters to stink. Columbia University Press The Natural History of the Bible
Book SynopsisDaniel Hillel follows events in the Hebrew Bible to reveal the complex interplay between the ancient Israelites and their natural and cultural environments. More than just affecting their material existence, the diverse environmental character of the ancient Near East profoundly shaped the evolution of Jewish culture and beliefs and, ultimately, of Western civilization as a whole.Trade ReviewThis is a book to supplement and fill in details of natural history that are generally absent or neglected in standard hisotrical studies. It is well illustrated and the bibliography is extensive. The Master's Seminary Journal That environmental factors affect our daily lives is disputed by no one. But can environment, climate and topology play a part in the development of a religious community? Hillel, professor emeritus of environmental studies at the University of Massachusetts and senior research scientist at Columbia University's Center for Climate Systems Research, says yes. He comes to the subject immersed in the lore of ancient Israel, from his grandfather's instruction to his own years living in modern Israel. He sees the Jewish belief system as an amalgam of ideas emerging from an interplay of human beings with both the land and its peoples, "absorb[ing] all the cultural strands... from all the ecological domains of the ancient Near East... and assimilat[ing] them into their own culture." He divides sacred history into seven "domains," dispensations based not on some theological construct but rather on the terrain in which the Israelites lived. What emerges is a largely naturalistic explanation of Israel's beliefs and laws, with a strong emphasis on the impact of culture and environment on the evolving Jewish religion. Hillel recounts, in a richly detailed and beautifully told manner, the origins of the Hebrew Bible in a new and satisfying way. (Jan.) Publisher's Weekly Hillel recounts, in a richly detailed and beautifully told manner, the origins of the Hebrew Bible in a new and satisfying way.Publishers Weekly Publishers Weekly With all the commentaries and books on the Hebrew Scriptures that have appeared over the years, it would seem nearly impossible to write something unique and illuminating. Yet this is precisely what Hillel has done by providing an environmental and ecological analysis of the text. Library Journal Engrossing... Rieser Church and Synagogue Libraries Daniel Hillel has done a magnificent job and contributed substantially both to Biblical scholarship and to the understanding of the ecology of the area. But he goes much deeper than simply interpreting the Bible's ecological setting. Hillel allows us to understand better the minds of those who were recording the events in Egypt, the return to Canaan, David and Solomon, and the various interpretations of Jerusalem, as well as the meaning of these events. Book SynopsisHow choosing a language created a peopleTrade ReviewAwarded the Frank Moore Cross Award, presented by the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), 2010. Finalist in Scholarship category of the 2009 National Jewish Book Awards. "An important monograph that synthesizes much previous work yet arrives at an original and provocative understanding of the influence of the development of the Hebrew script and its associated scribal culture on the formation of biblical literature."--H-Judaic"Illuminating the enduring stakes of biblical writing, Sanders demonstrates how Hebrew assumed and promoted a sourse of power previously unknown in written literature: 'the people' as the protagonist of religion and politics."--Shofar"Revolutions in scholarship do not usually begin with new discoveries, but with new ways of looking at long-known facts. Whether this is still possible in biblical studies is the question. . . . But the realization is dawning that Seth Sanders has done something special."--Nederlands Dagblad"Sanders's analysis of West Semitic epigraphic sources moves significantly beyond philological analysis (without leaving it behind) to engage philosophy, political and social theory, and religious studies more broadly. . . . His ability to scour the epigraphic record for evidence of social history and to set his findings in such a broad intellectual framework is a major contribution. . . . This book will remain extremely valuable for the way it conceptualizes the creation of biblical literature in new ways and in light of largely unmined data."--Journal of Religion"A thought-provoking social history of writing, combining philology, anthropology, and political theory. Sanders's overarching claim is that the rise of written vernacular forms in the Iron Age Levant--ultimately, the Bible itself--signals a new mode of political communication, one that introduced a new actor into history, namely, the people. . . . Sanders's central thesis is compelling and important."--Shofar"Nearly every page of this book contains gems of epigraphic interpretation: from an illuminating study of the Ugaritic ritual of national unity in relation to the biblical scapegoat ritual to elucidating treatments of the bureaucratically useless Gezer calendar and the politically significant morphology of the letter yod."--Journal of the American Oriental Society"An absolutely innovative way of reading the use of ancient Hebrew for generating political identity and for understanding the Hebrew Bible itself. It is refreshing to see such profound insight and analyses come out of material that has otherwise not received substantial recognition of its cultural and political importance."--Mark S. Smith, author of God in Translation: Deities in Cross-Cultural Discourse in the Biblical World"Sanders takes familiar, long-studied material and makes new knowledge. He treats biblical Hebrew as a political phenomenon, exploring how language and especially its written form were employed in the creation of an imagined community--a nation--in the course of ancient Israel's history."--Eva von Dassow, author of State and Society in the Late Bronze Age: Alalah under the Mittani EmpireTable of ContentsList of Illustrations ix Preface xi Acknowlegments xv Abbreviations xvii Introduction 1 1.
