  • The Devil's Paw

Double 9 Booksllp The Devil's Paw

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisE. Phillips Oppenheim's World War I-set novel The Devil's Paw, written in 1920, is rife with international espionage and intrigue. After being given access to extremely private documents, Miss Katherine Abbeway is quickly detained on suspicion of being a spy. She gives the confidential papers to a friend, but are they really secure? Will they fall into the wrong hands? The Devil's Paw is a perfect illustration of both Oppenheim's qualities and flaws. The plot, which centers on an attempted Bolshevik-style revolution in England during World War I, starts off as both an exciting thriller and a masterful representation of the political premise that battles on the subject that overthrow rulers are frequently required to safeguard a free society. Peace is not the greatest virtue. The backdrop of World War I provides the readers an insight into the hardships of people during that time. This is a compelling book because of the combination of suspicion, conspiracies, and the general threat of war which is present throughout the course of the novel.

Double 9 Books Off On A Comet! A Journey Through Planetary Space

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe story opens when a comet named Gallia collects a few tiny bits of Earth while passing by it in midair. The disaster occurred close to Gibraltar on January 1st, 1885. There are still 36 people in the territory the comet has occupied who are of French, English, Spanish, and Russian nationalities. At first, they don't know what's happened and think there's been an earthquake instead of a collision. Adjutant Ben Zoof for Captain Servadac surprises himself by jumping 12 meters (39 feet) in the air as the first indication of weight loss. Soon after, Zoof and Servadac also observe that there are only six hours between day and night, that east and west have switched places, and that water begins to boil at 66 C (151 F), from which they correctly deduce that the atmosphere has thinned and the pressure has reduced. They observe the Earth and the Moon when they first arrive at Gallia, but they incorrectly think it is a newly discovered planet. Their research expedition, which included a ship that the comet also captured, produced additional important data.
