Book SynopsisJanuary, 1918: Franz Becker, a high-scoring, decorated ace, rejoins his fighter squadron in Flanders. He has been fighting since October 1914, and is suffering badly from the strain of war. Imperial Germany is almost finished, strangled by the Allied blockade, its people starving. The country is running out of men and resources, but there is one last chance to win the war: Russia has made peace and the Americans have yet to arrive. Franz and his fellow pilots know they have to fight on, no matter how outnumbered they are, otherwise the enemy will be in Germany. The Spring takes a heavy toll of the top aces, and Franz knows that it will soon be his turn to go to the Great Army. His close friend Karl von Leussow is at home in Brandenburg, on convalescent leave after being shot down and badly wounded the summer before. Franz misses him desperately, but believes Karl to be safe. He can only hope that they will meet again, “after the war”...whenever that may be. Spring turns to Summer and every German offensive fails, with terrible casualties. The Allied aircraft are ever more numerous, the new pilots are barely out of school, and most die within a couple of weeks. The ranks of the Great Army continue to grow. He needs a key, a way in, a map, and he is sure that his chief suspect Cres can provide it... 1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom the author of “His Bloody Project”, shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2016. There does not appear to be anything remarkable about the fatal car crash on the A35. But one question dogs Inspector Georges Gorski: where has the victim, an outwardly austere lawyer, been on the night of his death? The troubled Gorski finds himself drawn into a mystery that takes him behind the respectable veneer of the sleepy French backwater of Saint-Louis. Graeme Macrae Burnet returns with a literary mystery that will beguile fans of “His Bloody Project” and “The Disappearance of Adèle Bedeau”. Darkly humorous, subtle and sophisticated, “The Accident on the A35” burrows deep into the psyches of its characters and explores the forgotten corners of small-town life. Trade Review"Skilfully written and neatly executed…elegant and aesthetically pleasing.Gripping and intelligent. -- Philip Pullman * The Guardian *Dazzling. Publishers Weekly (US), star review;“An engaging tale of domestic intrigue in backwater France with two appealing detective figures.”"Highly accomplished, The Accident on the A35 works on several levels… The narration has the simple momentum of classic crime writing… It has a denouement like something out of Greek tragedy but delivers as a proper police procedural too… Burnet's cleverness doesn't get in the way of your enjoyment but playfully adds levels of meaning." -- Anthony Cummins * Observer *“Very much a novel of skillfully drawn characters… With its nostalgic echoes of crime fiction of the past and elegant, economical prose, it affords a variety of quiet and satisfying pleasures.” -- Barry Forshaw * Financial Times *“Extravagant talent.” -- Mark Lawson * Guardian *Both a classy detective story and a stylish meditation on agency and existence. If Roland Barthes had written a detective novel, then this would be it.” -- Philip Womack * Literary Review *“Reads like a lavishly detailed, psychologically accurate, intelligent, well-plotted, unsimple Simenon… Burnet has proved himself to be the literary games-master.” -- David Robinson * Books from Scotland *“Intriguing… distinctive… atmospheric, often surprising, with a denouement which is beautifully under-played.” -- Allan Massie * Scotsman *[A] truly superlative tale… fascinating… one of the most clever and compelling novels to be published this year -- Lesley McDowell * Herald *"As steeped in the works of Simenon as a good boeuf bourgignon is in red wine. The characters' pretensions are mercilessly exposed in frill-free prose… What matters, of course, is whether a novel's characters seem to the reader to be alive. Burnet's do." -- Jake Kerridge * Telegraph. *There are so many echoes of French writers in this book… [Raymond] is a fantastic depiction of the typical alienated teenager. -- Alex Clark * BBC Radio 4 Open Book.; *"Simenon fans will feel at home in the claustrophobic and petty-minded atmosphere of the French provinces.""Graeme Macrae Burnet's best book yet. A unique and compelling novel…[It] works perfectly as a page-turning crime fiction, but it's also moody and Gallic and wittily deadly serious." -- Chris Dolan"Fans of His Bloody Project will [enjoy] familiar themes including questions of authorship, betrayal, family, love, death, truth and lies (or rather, what can be said to be true, if anything, and what is false?), and the possibilities of youth versus the reality of adulthood." -- Alistair Braidwood * Scots Whay Hae *Elegant, craftily written and frequently funny -- Phil Miller * Herald *"Clever, meandering and oh, so French… Burnet really has — a rare thing nowadays — a novelist's eye… I confess myself seduced by the atmosphere of provincial ennui. I longed to shrug gallically at a detective through a haze of cigarette smoke, to pour myself a drink from a cut-glass decanter, to drive to the next town to make acrobatic love to a beautiful…I'm getting carried away." -- James Marriott * Times; *“A crime novel with post-modern flourishes… Beautifully observed…with understated humour… Wry, intelligent and a lot of fun.” -- Andrew Taylor * Spectator *

  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Baker Street Press The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisSherlock Holmes’s observation to Dr Watson at the start of A Case of Identity is certainly borne out by the twelve short stories in this collection, characterised by the originality and inventiveness that has made Conan Doyle a household name. The familiar sanctuary of 221B Baker Street is regularly invaded by a procession of puzzled clients with bizarre problems to solve. Holmes’s cases include a young engineer who arrives with one of his thumbs cut off at the root; a governess who has been offered a tempting salary provided she dresses in the exact manner specified by her employers; and a visit from a frightened young woman whose sister has inexplicably died from fear and nervous shock. These and other seemingly intractable puzzles are solved by Sherlock Holmes’s inimitable blend of intellectual analysis and inspired deduction. Like the faithful Watson, in these stories the reader can enjoy their position at the centre of events, and admire the master of detection at work.Trade ReviewThere are few characters from the Victorian era that can possibly have the same resonance today than a certain Sherlock Holmes who, along with his able assistant Dr Watson, and an assorted cast of inept policemen and nefarious villains still regularly seeps into modern life and parlance. The concept of any amateur detective these days being ‘Sherlockian’, the famous deerstalker, violin, pipe and casual drug use, and oft-misquoted lines and ‘catchphrases’ are among the many legacies that show how much Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation will forever be ingrained in the psyche of the nation. And so it was with huge interest that I heard about a new collection of the complete works, released by Baker Street Press. No matter how many times I’ve read the canon, it still fascinates me to this day and demonstrates what a truly remarkable character Conan Doyle created, despite his somewhat hit and miss results outside of the Holmes stories. This collection of nine hardback books is just utterly beautiful to behold. There’s something special, perhaps even more so in this day and age, about holding a quality version of one of your favourite books and simply immersing yourself in it. And this new release delivers more than any that I’ve ever had my hands on. Each of the nine books features the original cover illustrations from the 1920s, which more than makes up for the fact that there are no illustrations inside. Each of the four standalone novels and five collections of short stories are here, acting as the perfect retro antidote to the most recent recreation of the stories, the really quite awful series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, for which I appreciate I’m in a large minority for taking a serious dislike to. The collection begins with A Study in Scarlet, which I have to say isn’t a favourite of mine, neither is The Sign of Four that followed, and for me it’s when the short stories kick in that I find Holmes at his mercurial best, and his frustrating worst, as Conan Doyle struggled to satisfy the insatiable demand at the time for the monster that he had created. Despite ‘killing off’ a character who had become the bane of his life, Conan Doyle thankfully brought Holmes back to life after his seeming demise at the Reichenbach Falls, and the stories have seldom been far from the public’s mind, especially through the films of Basil Rathbone and the peerless depiction by Jeremy Brett in the 1980s and 1990s. I really cannot recommend this new set highly enough to those with even a passing interest in the original stories, through to those who already have several copies of the Sherlock Holmes stories on their bookshelves. If you think you have the definitive version of the books, then think again, as Baker Street Press have outdone themselves with this release. -- https://www.on-magazine.co.uk/arts/book-review/crime/sherlock-holmes-deluxe-classic-series/

Book SynopsisLove was not something I was in search of. Love found me. A love that grew like a weed, unwanted but prolifically consuming. Moat Hill, with all its past grandeur, was drenched in sadness. Scrape the crumbling plaster away from its walls and you’ll find secrets creeping beneath its surface. And the Hall’s master, Mr Evans, my client, would be the catalyst of the grief I feel today. Architect Rosie Rudley’s ambitious desire to further her career unexpectedly changes her life. Arriving at Moat Hill Hall for the first time, she discovers there are secrets preventing her from accomplishing the job. Mr Ralph Evans, her enigmatic client, is uncooperative, using his agent to stand for him. As she delves deeper into the project, boundaries between dreams and reality blur, and she finds herself increasingly drawn to him and his mysterious past. An ominous threat follows her as she works her way into bringing the Hall back to life. Is the project worth the danger she gets herself into and can she trust the people around her?

Book SynopsisScribble and his gang, the Stash Riders, haunt the streets of an alternate Manchester, chasing the immersive highs that come from Vurt Feathers. Place a feather in your mouth and it takes you to the Vurt: another place, a trip, a shared reality of all our dreams and mythologies. Different coloured feathers provide different experiences, but Scribble is searching for his lost love and only one feather offers the hope of finding her. It’s the ultimate feather, it may not even exist at all: Curious Yellow. But as the Game Cat says, “Be careful, be very careful. This ride is not for the weak.” First published in 1993, Jeff Noon’s extraordinary, influential, award-winning novel transcended SF boundaries and resisted categorization. Alluding to noir and surrealism alike, it was defiantly its own thing and remains so thirty years later. “Refreshing, disturbing and original," – The Independent File Under: Fantasy [ Curious Yellow Urban Wonderland Game Cat Living on the Dub Side ]Trade Review“I remember my sharp delight, in 1993 on first discovering Vurt’s hallucinogenic VR-induced Manchester. It instantly became one of my favourite examples of new directions in science fiction, and remains so these decades later!”– William Gibson, author of Neuromancer and The Peripheral “An intense, blistering story about the price of knowledge, full of dreamers and borderlands.”– Lauren Beukes, author of The Shining Girls “Passionate, distinctive, demanding and enthralling.”– The Times “A gripping piece of speculative fiction.”– The Guardian “Refreshing, disturbing and original.”– The Independent “An audacious fantasia, exhibiting a narrative daring and command few new writers can boast, sweeping the reader along as though it were a Vurt feather-trip itself.”– Publishers Weekly “Subversive, transgressive. It gets under your skin like Cronenberg.”– Chuck Wendig“These books, the best books, discover the essential human notes of their times, and they ring so strongly down the decades that we remember them still.”– Warren Ellis, author of Transmetropolitan“Vivid, restless, street-writing, neon-noir, ranging widely through fantasies and rationalities. An utterly unique, quite brilliant piece of writing.”– Adam Roberts, author of Jack Glass “Vurt was a better Philip K. Dick novel than most of Dick’s own books”– Richard Kadrey

Book SynopsisSophie is an aspiring British Pakistani actress whose only claim to fame – despite her vast and unscrupulous ambitions – is the unplanned on-camera birth of her son, a clip which has become something of a cult favourite on the Indian B movie scene. Her husband, Tariq, is a pillar of Bradford’s Muslim community and her perfect match, until his sudden disappearance under mysterious circumstances. When a body is found, presumed to be his, but disfigured in a way that makes identification difficult, Sophie is distraught. Tariq was her ‘third time lucky husband’. Her first, Amir, came out of a childhood sweetheart relationship that couldn't last, and her rebound marriage to doting Faraz, a recent immigrant to the UK and obsessed with the Royal Family, was even shorter lived. Is Sophie just luckless or is there more to her than meets the eye? And maybe, just maybe, one of her exes has something to do with Tariq’s untimely death. Might one of them be responsible for the threatening letters? Sophie herself is guilty of something, but is murder part of her ambition? In Sophie, Dar has created a flawed yet hypnotising female lead: a cunning, narcissistic character for fans of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Oyinkan Braithwaite’s My Sister the Serial Killer. It is just a matter of time before her intricate web of lies begins to draw tighter.Trade Review"A well-written and engaging story of domestic suspense with a difference, set in the Muslim community of West Yorkshire. Multiple viewpoints are juggled skilfully to deliver a real page-turner."– Martin Edwards, author of Gallows Court"Azma Dar makes a thrilling debut with this time-switching, head-hopping crime story that is rich with spice and authentic detail."– Ashok Banker, author of A Kiss After Dying"Highly recommendable, especially to fans of Gillian Flynn, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, J.T. Ellison, and Gilly Macmillan."– Booklist
