The author's tenet is that any case, whatever the presenting difficulties, can be treated by such an integrative, multi-systemic approach. This book abounds with vivid observations and case descriptions, followed by discussions in a fictional inter-disciplinary seminar. Every chapter is followed by a brief summary, homework assignments and a classified list of relevant publications.Integrative Play Therapy with Individuals, Families and Groups will generate immense interest throughout the play therapy community. It can serve as a textbook for budding play therapists and as a reference book for more experienced practitioners.Trade Review"A masterful blending of play therapy theories and techniques in make-believe play sessions. Thought-provoking and insightful!" Charles Schaefer, Ph.D., Registered Play Therapy Supervisor, Co-Founder & Director Emeritus, The Association for Play Therapy, USA "Integrative Play Therapy with Individuals, Families and Groups provides a comprehensive blueprint to guide both beginners and seasoned practitioners. Ariel methodically links concepts from systems, linguistic and play theory to create an innovative, integrated approach to diagnosis and treatment, the Diamond Model. The application of the model is illustrated though compelling and in-depth case examples in varying treatment formats. The practice of integrative play therapy is further exhibited by thought-provoking dialogues about the cases with an interdisciplinary team. The complexity of issues confronting practitioners today is daunting. Ariel’s book offers a theoretically grounded, methodical, and thorough guide to construct effective and playful interventions." Professor Anne Stewart, Department of Graduate Psychology, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia, Member of the Association for Play Therapy Board of Directors, Past President of the Virginia Association for Play Therapy "Once again, Dr. Ariel has challenged and articulated insights into our play therapy field. Words like preparatory moves, integration of family and individual therapy, interdisciplinary approaches and collaborative supervision come alive in this, his most recent book. Such a pleasure in our times to hear from a clinician with wisdom, not just knowledge, but wisdom with respect to the entire child and his/her family." • Taylor & Francis Ltd Transforming Sexual Narratives A Relational

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTransforming Sexual Narratives offers readers the opportunity to address complex sexual problems through Narrative Relational Sex Therapy (NRST), an original approach that Suzanne Iasenza has developed during twenty-five years of clinical practice. This method presents a deeper, richer way of thinking about sexual challenges that has enabled clients to successfully rewrite their mistaken narratives to reclaim pleasure, intimacy, and satisfaction in their erotic lives. Drawing on the strengths of three very different therapeutic traditions psychoanalytic, couple and family systems, and sex therapy it delivers a fresh and dynamic way of understanding the complex interrelationship between personal, social, cultural, and familial sexual narratives. Chapters include conversations with diverse couples and individuals from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures, who exist in every kind of body, and in each case show how unconscious and harmful narratives can be tranTrade Review"This is simply a wonderfully written book that acknowledges the unruly multidimensionality of sex and offers a rich, deep understanding of sexual issues and the stories that shape our sex lives and a clear way forward to eroticism that is about pleasure, not just performance, and intimate connection rather than recipes for endless novelty. Note this as essential reading for every sex therapist and couple counsellor!" — Sue Johnson, author of Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love, Canada"Suzanne Iasenza has written a unique and challenging book which should be on every clinician’s shelf, especially those working with non-traditional individuals and couples. Her relational approach to sex therapy focused on transforming sexual narratives is a comprehensive approach combining psychodynamic, couple, and queer perspectives. The emphasis on willingness as the key to desire, creating a sexual menu, mindfulness narrative touch, kink, and sexual resilience provides an empathic, respectful perspective on individual and couple sex therapy. Particularly important is confronting simplistic understandings and the pathologizing of sexual variations. Dr. Iasenza confronts secrecy and shame as she encourages clients to make meaning of the complex themes from childhood and create a meaningful narrative about themselves, and their relational and sexual lives. Sexuality enhances mastery and satisfaction." — Barry McCarthy, Professor of Psychology, American University, USA"On the topic of sex therapy, there is no one I trust more than Dr. Suzanne Iasenza. She is at home with patients who are lesbian, gay, queer, straight, non-binary, cisgender and trans. Wherever someone lands in what we might call the sexual diaspora, Iasenza is able to meet them with a capacious clinical wisdom. Relying on notions from narrative therapy, family systems, and psychoanalysis, she offers case examples that help couples and therapists move past outdated, normative goals to a model focused on willingness and pleasure. This is no less than a step towards the cultural redefinition of Eros." — Deborah Anna Luepnitz, PhD, Psychoanalyst and author of Schopenhauer's Porcupines, USA"Never before has the realm of the practice of sex therapy been explored in such depth, breadth and sensitivity. Suzanne Iasenza demonstrates the wide range of therapeutic interventions that can be called up in the process of healing and integration. She provides the reader with a lucid conceptual base and a detailed account of practical ways of doing sex therapy using her innovative model. She helps us rethink what is healthy sex, doing so with exquisite sensitivity to the cultural and socio-political issues that impact us all. This is essential reading for every couple therapist." — Lois Braverman, MSW, President Emeritus, Ackerman Institute for the Family, USA"With Transforming Sexual Narratives, Suzanne Iasenza has written an instant classic - a book that should be read by every clinician, not just those who consider themselves sex therapists. Weaving together the most current psychoanalytic theories, family systems theory, and a genuine understanding of the intersubjective nature of human experience, she builds a compelling narrative that builds to her own, very unique Relational Theory of Sex Therapy. Finally, we have an answer to that often-asked question "what is it that sex therapists actually do?" Iasenza not only tells us, but tells us how to do it effectively. The book is devoid of jargon, written with empathy and a directness accessible to all, and filled with meaningful clinical examples that bring her concepts alive. Debunking prevalent sexual myths like sex with strangers always lacks intimacy, Iasenza critiques the ubiquitous Desire-Arousal-Orgasm Model of sexual experience, that imposes a rigid linear scheme on what’s actually a complex multidimensional process. Most clients, she asserts, unknowingly internalize this model as the only model of "healthy" sexuality. The party line, she suggests, kills the party, and she offers a new model that includes each individual’s lived experience. I cannot recommend Transforming Sexual Narratives more highly. It will change how we all work." — Sandra Kiersky, PhD, Co-Editor "Sexualities lost and Found." International Universities Press or Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, USA"Suzanne Iasenza is a master clinician, an inspiring teacher, and an excellent writer. In Transforming Sexual Narratives, she builds upon earlier theoretical and clinical approaches to develop a comprehensive, practical, and effective methodology for achieving transformation. Iasenza offers a framework for Narrative Relational Therapy and a guide to practice with practical examples to share her professional experience with individuals and couples. She shows how to do work that gets to root of the problem and enables therapists and clients to examine the long-hidden core aspects of individual experience and the sexual persona. Her approach embraces the full complexity of a person and recognizes the depth of sexuality developed over a lifetime. She demonstrates how to clear obstacles and break patterns. This book provides therapists and patients with a clear vision that the change they seek is perfectly possible by stressing difference between desire and willingness, between history and fate, between limiting beliefs and real possibilities. Transforming Sexual Narratives is a genuinely helpful book that will transform clinical practice with people of all genders and sexual orientations, solo and partnered. It challenges assumptions, increases clinical competence, elevates our approach to human sexuality, and can truly transform clinical practice. As a sex therapist who works with individuals and couples I am energized and eager to get to work with these transformational tools." — Katherine Rachlin, PhD, Clinical Psychologist, AASECT diplomate of sex therapy, USA"Suzanne Iasenza's Transforming Sexual Narratives beautifully details an approach to sexual difficulty that has both far-reaching breadth and stunning depth. She creatively combines elements from a range of important contributors from behavioral therapy, psychodynamic approaches, sexology and mindfulness, to name a few. She applies the resulting tools to today's broad variety of sexualities -- to partnered and unpartnered sex, to gay and straight sex, polyamory and single sex in order to enable the clinician reader to develop an informed, flexible and tensile capacity to face the many issues that are the staple of modern work with sexual difficulty. Iasenza's widely informed and integrated approach will enhance the work of clinicians of all stripes who dedicate themselves to working with sex and relationships." — David Scharff, MD, is Co-Founder and Former Director, the International Psychotherapy Institute; Former President, The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists; and Chair of the International Psychoanalytic Association's Committee on Couple and Family Psychoanalysis, USA"Sex therapy has evolved since the pioneering work of William Masters and Virginia Johnson. Their research was heavily focused on the physiological process that occurred in the body during intercourse and at the point of orgasm. But as someone once said, sex is not what you have between your legs but what you have between your ears. How do our thoughts, the narratives we tell ourselves and others, promote or interfere with healthy sexual functioning? Given the state of sexuality education in the United States, it is not surprising that many people believe that they are the only ones who feel or think the way they do. In Transforming Sexual Narratives: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy, Dr. Iasenza demonstrates through the use of case histories, how a client’s mistaken sexual narratives can be transformed ‘to reclaim intimacy and satisfaction in their erotic lives.’ Dr. Iasenza’s approach to sex therapy offers a valuable guide for any psychotherapist who has clients with sexual problems." — Herb Samuels, PhD, Past President Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, USA"Suzanne Iasenza’s new book, Transforming Sexual Narratives: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy, builds upon her extraordinary body of previous clinically informed work on sexually conflicted, low desire, and otherwise struggling varieties of couples that are seeking an appropriate holding environment for sorting out and improving their intimate relationships. Her relational approach (NRST) embodies the best of scientific contributions from sexology, and sexual disorders literature and practice, but her contemporary psychoanalytic, clinical-technical wisdom captures the essential narratives of lived couple experience, past and present. What is truly transformative in these pages, for the beginning and experienced couple’s therapist, is how her chapters weave the sexual and interpersonal histories of each partnership into a therapeutic potential; opening a space for new emotional experience that both informs and improves empathic understanding, for couple use, enriching their relational mosaic. While readers of this book can learn about skills when working with sexual difficulties of couples, the strength of her work is in its humble translation of the internal and external worlds of her treatment couples. Dr. Iasenza embraces and expects a psychological-emotional exposure to occur and utilizes transferences and countertransference to cull the necessary underbelly of neglected, traumatized, and repressive elements so interpretive and technical measures can be applied. This book adds a necessary component of relationally sound clinical material for use in working with troubled couples presenting disorders of desire, and other symptoms of disappointment and dissatisfying interpersonal relations. I recommend it without hesitation. In fact, I recommend reading it twice." — Carl Bagnini, LCSW, BCD, Senior and Founding Faculty, The International Psychotherapy Institute, and faculty, The Adelphi Derner Institute Post-graduate and Doctoral Programs in Psychoanalysis and Couple Therapy, USA. Book SynopsisParenthood can be one of the most fulfilling, altering, and challenging life events. This book is set within the background of the reality of many parentsâ return-to-work experience, the task of re-engaging with work and maintaining a job or a career, and the difficulties that parenthood poses for balancing the demands of a new family with the demands of work. It helps us understand this reality, give voice to new parents, and offer relief in the knowledge that we know a lot about these challenges and, most importantly, how we can start to address them. The book brings together a number of internationally recognized experts from research, practice, and policy to explore the issues and offer evidence-based solutions around return-to-work after having children. It takes a balanced approach to theory and practice to cover topics such as equality, stereotypes, work-family conflict, training and development, and workplace culture, among others, whilst integrating research and policy, and illustrating learnings with case studies from parents and examples from countries that lead the way. It will appeal to parents, researchers, and employers in any sector or economy across the world. Ultimately, it will help develop ways for new parents to re-engage with work successfully while maintaining their work-family well-being.Trade Review"What a fascinating book! As both a researcher and campaigner in this area, I welcome the way that the authors have pulled together a terrific mix of contributors from research, practice and policy, to tackle the issues faced by both mothers and fathers in returning to work after childbirth. We have so much to learn from the countries represented here." - Sue Vinnicombe, CBE, Professor of Women and Leadership, Cranfield University, UK"Men and women participate more equally in the labor market than ever before in many parts of the world. This is probably one of the biggest societal changes to come about in the 20th century. Surprisingly, however, the realities and practicalities of such emancipated labor participation are not well studied, nor are they well understood. One of those realities and practicalities concerns having and raising children. Specifically, parents returning to work are an overlooked group. Fortunately, this book charts the territory and gives important pointers as to where to look, what to understand better, and what we can do. This edited collection of 12 chapters by a range of important scholars provides a wide overview of the issues involved. There is attention for stereotype threats, strategies that parents use, the special case of fathers, the career issues involved, and practices that organizations can offer, just to name a few of the topics addressed. The editors, Maria Karanika-Murray and Cary Cooper, expertly organized the materials and provided an inspiring introduction of the issue. They also added a final chapter that is rich in lessons learned and personal reflections. The bottom line appears to be that the issue requires a lot of maturity from parents, organizations, and governments alike: we all can and need to do our part. On a personal level, when reading this book, it is intriguing to see academics trying to get to grips with the challenge of parenting themselves within the current timeframe and context. I wish this book had been around when I first became a parent." - Marc van Veldhoven, Professor of Work, Health & Well-being, Tilburg University, The NetherlandsTable of ContentsList of ContributorsForeword Ann Francke, Chartered Management Institute, LondonForewordLaura Addati, International Labour Organization, GenevaChapter 1. Book SynopsisThis essential handbook provides clinicians with the tools to introduce Integrative Systemic Therapy (IST) into their practice working with individuals, couples, and families.Describing the how to and how to decide what to do aspects of IST, this book outlines a practical, problem-solving approach that considers client strengths and and cultural contexts in the process of integrating interventions from various therapy models and empirically supported treatments. Chapters demonstrate how problem-solving tasks can be accomplished using the IST blueprint for therapy and include scenarios that will challenge the reader to think through the specific steps for IST, encouraging them to consider the therapeutic alliance and the use of self in therapy. For supervisors, trainers, and clinicians familiar with IST, this book will enrich and deepen their understanding of it. The book is also relevant for clinicians and supervisors of all types of therapy who seek to become moreTrade Review"This IST Handbook is the next step in the elaboration of Integrative Systemic Therapy. With great clarity, it takes the concepts that were laid out in Integrative Systemic Therapy (2018) and grounds them in the specifics of practice. It details what to do, how to do it, and when to do it, from how to start the first session to how to conclude a therapeutic episode dealing with a particular problem sequence. It is a phenomenally useful guide for teachers, supervisors, and practitioners of IST, as well as an indispensable resource for clinicians wanting to expand their clinical horizons in the direction of integrative and systemic practice. Transcending the myriad models permeating psychotherapy today, this book provides a user-friendly format to guide practice, while simultaneously encouraging creativity and innovation. Read it and grow!" - William Pinsof, PhD, LMFT, ABPP, Pinsof Family Systems"This is a wonderful handbook of Integrative Systemic Therapy with individuals, couples, and families. A must-read for the beginning clinician: Accessible, systematic, pragmatic step-by-step teaching of theory and technique, with lots of clinical examples and exercises. This book is also valuable for experienced clinicians looking to deepen an integrative perspective on their work. The approach is strengths-based, with a problem-solving, collaborative orientation, integrating multiple systems and approaches, and finely tuned to the therapeutic alliance. It is sensitive to socio-cultural context, addressing intrapsychic, interpersonal, and intergenerational dynamics as well as biological issues. An outstanding guide for all therapists. Highly recommended!" - Mona D. Fishbane, PhD, author, Loving with the Brain in Mind: Neurobiology & Couple Therapy"Human behavior is complex. Changing it is more so. This handbook guides therapists and students of therapy through a pragmatic, step-by-step process that integrates therapy models and brings together best practices and research findings to yield a collaborative, client system-centered approach unique to each individual, couple or family and their therapist.Thank you to Russell, Breunlin and Sahebi for a tour de force—bringing together the underlying constructs of important systemic approaches to therapy in a sophisticated yet clear and pragmatic way so that therapists and clients can identify problem and potential solution sequences, common missteps, constraints and how to lift them. The authors’ attention to the therapeutic alliance, as well as the use of case illustrations, suggested exercises, and graphics at the beginning of each chapter, bring the approach to life for the reader." Book SynopsisIn this book, Prophecy Coles traces the existential history of the unwanted child with particular attention to the illegitimate child, linking myth, literature and clinical practice in the historical and legal context of adoption. From the time of the Reformation in the sixteenth century until the early twentieth century the lives of such children were short-lived. The Adoption Act of 1926 did much to change the moral climate and the fate of the illegitimate child. It provided the child with a legal family and a name. There follows some unexpected difficulties that emerged after World War Two. Adopted children did not necessarily thrive, and young mothers who had been forced to give up a child born out of wedlock revealed their suffering. The sealed records of the illegitimate childâs origins became an issue. Attachment theory and the development of neuroscience underpin the theoretical approach of this book. Today, the children who are available for adoption are older and may be distressed by several years in care. Fundamental to helping these adopted children and their families there needs to be a multi-disciplined therapeutic approach to try and mitigate the damage that has often been done to the early infant brain through trauma. This book brings to life some of the adoption issues through the study of personal memoirs. Each chapter considers adoption from a different angle: the adopted child, the birth mother, the birth father, foster parents and adopting parents. The final chapter discusses some of the problems around adoption that have arisen again with reproductive technology and surrogate mothering. This book will be of interest to all those who have been involved in or affected by adoption. It will be of special interest to those adopting parents who have not been properly prepared or supported in their magnificent work of taking on some of the most troubled children in our society. Trade Review"This is a timely book, as Adoption Services are structurally and bureaucratically being reorganised. In the confusion and chaos that inevitably follows, it is easy to forget that adoption is ultimately a relational experience. This well researched book looks at the attachment relationships, for all parties involved. Attachment is the touchstone of that experience and Prophecy adds depth, history and neuroscience to enrich our understanding of that experience. She also adds her clinical experience and that of others, to add to the narrative. A very rich and rewarding read. "Alan Burnell. Co-founder and Director of family futures"This remarkable book provides a riveting historical account of British society’s evolving understanding of not only mothers' but also fathers’ painful experience of giving up a child to adoption. Prophecy Coles has succeeded yet again in vividly conveying the emotional impact of being a child existing for 9 months in a mother’s womb only to face anxieties of separation from her and the father and placed in the care of others. It seems imperative that professionals and both natural and adopting parents and their offspring develop an understanding of adoption which this important book provides."Jeanne Magagna. Former head of Psychotherapy Services at Great Ormond Street Hospital and former Consultant to Family Futures Adoption and Fosterning Consortium. "With wisdom, and deep clinical and life-experience, Prophecy Coles has delivered an evocative and thought provoking text on the important subject of adoption. Her unique personal voice shines though, as she weaves tales which are moving and peppered with understandings from literature, history, politics and psychotherapy, and most importantly, are infused with a heartfelt and compassionate appreciation of the complex issues that adoption raises," Graham Music. Consultant and Child Psychotherapist at the Tavistock and Portman Clinic. "This sensitive book by an experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapist, Prophecy Coles, extends her fascination with the sad chances the newborn infant can suffer. It is extraordinary that early disruption has for so long been overlooked as a serious life event for the infant, and for the child and adult that he/she becomes. Such long-term effects have perhaps been intuitively known – as the book conveys a cow losing its calf is a crisis even a child can know deeply. Coles does face us with the stunning disadvantage and prolonged distress of adoption. We want so much want to create an advantage for the dispossessed that the disturbance gets silently shoved away into a dark cupboard and can only with long persistence be taken out and looked at again. This book can help keep the difficult-to-face in front of us and recognise how profoundly we have always wanted to hide it. Surely all care workers need to use it in the care they provide for people they support."Bob Hinshelwood. Sensate Focus and the Psyche explores in depth both psychoanalytic and psychosexual perspectives of sensate focus, a programme of touching exercises for couples with sexual problems, and in so doing provides an original, integrated model for understanding the conscious and unconscious impact of this tactile intervention on couples in treatment.Susan Pacey reviews the historical relationship between psychoanalysis and sex therapy and the splitting of mind, body and relationship since Freud. She illustrates how the tactile intervention can help repair the early life impingements on partnersâ individual development that mobilise anxieties about sexuality and shame in adulthood. Case studies illustrate how sensate focus can help conceptualise unconscious embodied memories, repair shame, encourage Winnicottian play, work through transitional phenomena and develop psychological space, establishing a platform for the healthy expression of adult sexuality. Book SynopsisThis original and imaginative book has been created by five-year-old Heath. In it, Heath illustrates his understanding of his autistic mother Joanna, giving insight into the different ways in which autistic and neurotypical people understand language. In his simple and uncomplicated style, accompanied by bright and colourful illustrations, Heath explains why his mother's brain understands words at a different rate than his own, and how they communicate in spite of their differences. Heath's work is accompanied by explanatory notes exploring Joanna's own experience of autism and language.Key features include: A Foreword by broadcaster, environmentalist and author Chris Packham, on acceptance, understanding, and expressing an autistic reality A unique exploration of language processing differences told through the eyes and mind of a child. Bright, colourful pictures and simple language, perfect for inspiring conversatioTrade Review[T]here is a remarkable tenderness here, between mother and child, an acceptance which is both beautiful and charming and heart-warming.
