  • The Unexpected Journey

Penguin Publishing Group The Unexpected Journey

Book SynopsisFrom Emma Heming Willis, wife of Bruce Willis, adeeply personal and richly compassionate support guide that helps caregivers care for themselves while they navigate a loved one''s dementia.AN OPEN FIELD PUBLICATION FROM MARIA SHRIVERThe day Emma Heming Willis? husband Bruce Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), all they were given was a pamphlet and told to check back in a few months. With no hope or direction, Emma walked out of that doctor?s appointment frozen with fear, confusion and a sense that her world had just fallen apart. In fact, it had. Bruce and Emma had their story written, their future mapped out. Yet all those dreams crumbled with that diagnosis, and Emma felt alone and more isolated than ever. How would she care for her husband while parenting their young daughters and protecting her family?s privacy? At that devastating time, Emma just wanted someone who''d been through it to tell her, ?This feels terrible right now. Your life is in shambles. But it?s going to be okay. Here are some things to think about and put in place so you can not just survive but thrive.?With The Unexpected Journey, Emma has written the book she wishes she?d had: a guide to navigating the complicated, heartbreaking, and transformative experience that is caregiving for your loved one with dementia. Weaving her personal journey as a care partner with the latest research and insights from the world?s top dementia and caregiving experts, she offers the guidance and wisdom caregivers everywhere so desperately need to hear, including: Getting a specific diagnosis is crucial. You should understand how your loved one?s brain changes with dementia. Taking care of yourself is not optional; it''s mandatory. It will make you a better care partner. It?s not selfish, it?s self-preserving. You don?t have a choice about being on this dementia caregiving journey. But you do have a choice in terms of how you approach it and reframe it. Caregivers are human. You aren?t always patient and selfless, you have challenges and struggle with conflicting emotions?and that?s okay. Ultimately, The Unexpected Journey shows you how to care for yourself while doing one of the hardest, mostheartbreaking jobs in the world. Because if you don?t take care of yourself, you are not going to be able to look after anyone else?especially your loved one with dementia. For anyone caregiving for a loved one with any form of dementia, and even for those caregiving for other conditions, The Unexpected Journey shows that you are not alone. As Emma writes, ?I know that no two caregiving journeys are the same, but we are connected by the same unchosen thread. It?s not an easy path for you, your loved one or your family. But I?m here to let you know that you are not alone, and, in time, you will be okay.?

  • Facing Cancer and the Fear of Death

Jason Aronson, Inc. Facing Cancer and the Fear of Death

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Facing Cancer and the Fear of Death: A Psychoanalytic Perspective on Treatment, Dr. Norman Straker proposes that âœdeath anxietyâ is responsible for the American societyâs failure to address costly futile care at the end of life.Trade ReviewIn Facing Cancer and the Fear of Death, the psychoanalyst Norman Straker...enriches the work enormously by allowing us to look into the minds of cancer patients, some our own colleagues, as they face these difficult and painful times. . . .[T]he varying voices combine to create an emotionally meaningful, deeply intelligent work. I think everyone, and not just therapists, should read this book. We all face death, many of us in the specter of cancer, and the experiences, difficulties, and resolutions described here could help us navigate the challenging times. * Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association *In this compilation of essays, Norman Straker of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and his colleagues offers helpful perspectives into the widespread death anxiety that affects individual health care decisions as well as large-scale policy imperatives. ... The reader is provided with a unique opportunity to peer inside varying states of existential threat, guided by analysts of superior psychological insight. ... On the whole, the text is succinct, well written, and wide ranging in its sources of knowledge while staying grounded in psychiatric theory. Palliative care clinicians will likely find this book to be interesting and helpful. The issue of deciding the optimal use of the psychoanalytic frame (and which rules to break) has relevance for palliative care consultants who often navigate the difficult waters of end-oflife decision making. The psychiatric perspective featured in the book provides palliative care clinicians with a refreshing approach to understanding complex psychodynamics in various clinical settings. The personal essays as well as case presentations are bracing in their honesty and are invaluable sources of insight for all who care for seriously ill patients. * Palliative Medicine *The issues dealt with in this book are topical and real. It was interesting to read about the psychological needs in end-of-life care from a slightly different angle (i.e. by psychoanalysts), and the potential benefits of palliative care as viewed from outside our specialty. * IAHPC Newsletter *This is a much needed and remarkable book that is a must read for all therapists who treat cancer patients, and those therapists who unexpectedly may be facing the prospect of their own mortality. The elegiac and moving narratives of analysts treating cancer patients, and analysts who become cancer patients themselves, can profoundly inform and shape the reader’s appreciation of the need for flexibility of technique in these situations. The reader will also derive great benefit from Dr. Straker’s summary conclusions and recommendations, distilled from these stories and from his thirty five years of experience as a psychoanalyst working in the field of psycho-oncology. -- Stephen M. Saravay M.D., American Academy of Psychosomatic MedicineThis book provides a deeply personal yet strongly academic perspective on the experience of cancer. Dr. Straker has assembled a group of professionals who openly share their knowledge and experience. The depth of Dr. Straker's scholarly understanding envelopes the other contributions and provides an informed psychoanalytic framework. The book will be valuable to those who work with cancer patients and will be extremely useful in the education of trainees. -- Philip Muskin M.D., Columbia University Medical CenterAnxiety over dealing with death and the dying process affects patients, their families, friends, and physicians, often leading to inadequate and unsatisfying management of this inevitable, natural life event. The results of not dealing with “the elephant in the room” can have long-term adverse consequences on the survivors, including the physicians caring for the patient. Posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, guilt, and alcohol abuse may be the unfortunate legacies of dealing with death anxiety poorly. Dr. Norman Straker, who has devoted much of his career to managing the psychological needs of patients with cancer, as well as their families and caregivers, has produced a superb book on defining the causes and management of death anxiety. Using a combination of psychiatric theory, research results, and in-depth case studies, he and his colleagues present practical, flexible approaches to dealing with death and death anxiety in cancer patients. It is a book that will be especially useful to oncologists, radiation therapists, internists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and others who deal with death and dying. -- Glen D. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewDr Katz has done it again! Congratulations to a job well done. Dr Katz is a health care professional who REALLY cares about cancer, its impact on patients and their loved ones. Her book demonstrates an empathetic dedication to professionalism and provides a comprehensive guide for both the detail oriented health care professional and survivor. It is an excellent resource that succeeds to assist with the complexities of cancer care navigation. Her book is an asset for the oncological and survivorship community. -- Michael L. Krychman, M.D., CM, Executive Director of Southern CA Center for Sexual Health and Survivorship Medicine; AASECT certified Sexual CounselorIn this book, with beautiful and detailed stories, Anne Katz deals with the major topics of surviving cancer. She is a superb observer of the various emotions that happen in patients and partners confronted with cancer and confronted with the medical professionals. She clearly explains the how and why of the various side effects of this process and her stories lay down the path towards solutions. Anne Katz is one of the very few professionals able to combine in her writing a loving picture of human people with well balanced inside information on disease and treatment. -- Woet Gianotten, M.D., Psychotherapist and co-founder of ISSC (International Society for Sexuality and Cancer)Anne Katz has written a smart, engaging, user-friendly guide for cancer survivors and those who love them. What shines through this book is not the cancer, but human beings-real people, to whom Dr. Katz transmits generous doses of information, help, and hope. -- Gina Ogden, PhD, Author of The Heart & Soul of Sex, and The Return of DesireAs stated in the first chapter of this accessible primer by registered nurse Katz (Univ. of Manitoba, Winnipeg; Sex When You're Sick: Reclaiming Sexual Health After Illness or Injury), cancer changes everything....Katz presents nine personal stories relating the challenges of a cancer life: fear of recurrence, post-treatment depression, returning to the workplace, fatigue, sex and relationships, a healthy diet/lifestyle, doctor appointments and follow-up, childbearing, and cognitive difficulties. The narratives are interrupted by statements/factoids intended to clarify or further develop the basic concept. The penultimate chapter is a digest of the cancer odysseys, summing up the information into what the author calls "A Blueprint for Health." The book concludes with a resources section....The disease continues to affect hundreds of thousands of individuals and families annually. If cancer memoirs circulate well in your library and budgets allow, consider adding this to the health shelf. * Library Journal *In this uplifting book, registered nurse Katz gives hope to the more-than-10-million cancer survivors in the U.S. Each of nine chapters focuses on a patient with a different kind of cancer (bladder, uterine, breast), each of whom faces different issues, such as depression, embarrassment, and exhaustion, and, ultimately, fares well. A woman with breast cancer initially doesn’t like the look of her implants. A man with colon cancer can’t seem to talk with his wife over his feelings about his ostomy bag. A construction worker with prostate cancer feels uneasy talking to his boss about how he will need accommodations since he needs to go to the bathroom frequently and can’t do heavy lifting for a while. Sexuality counselor as well as nurse, Katz gives helpful and explicit information about stress reduction, sensual massage, and lubricants....Cancer survivors and their friends and families will get a psychological boost from her book. * Booklist *Anne Katz provides ample evidence that cancer changes everything. She identifies several major hurdles that often linger long after therapy ends. Each one is presented through the eyes of a survivor who overcame it and is now “living the new normal.” A cancer survivor reading this book may not have personally experienced all nine hurdles, but he or she will certainly identify with several....Surviving After Cancer: Living the New Normal is a very well organized book. It is written to help survivors and their families, and it does an able job at that. All advice provided is backed by solid research. And the patient stories make it easy for survivors to identify with many others who are also living the new normal. This book is a good resource for cancer patients at all stages of their illnesses. A newly diagnosed patient can read it and anticipate what may happen after therapy. A survivor recently discharged from care can read the sections that coincide with the hurdles they are encountering, and family members can do likewise. Using the excellent information and resources that Anne Katz has assembled here should make the cancer journey a smoother one with fewer detours. It may also improve understanding among family members who live with the survivor. * New York Journal of Books *Table of Contents1 Section 1: What is the New Normal? 2 Chapter 1: You're a survivor now 3 Section 2: The Challenges of Being a Cancer Survivor 4 Chapter 2: Is the cancer back? 5 Chapter 3: When Will I be happy again? 6 Chapter 4: What will Everyone Say? 7 Chapter 5: What Do I Feel So Tired? 8 Chapter 6: Where Did that Feeling Go? 9 Chapter 7: Feeling Fit 10 Chapter 8: What Should I Be Looking For? 11 Chapter 9: We Want to Start a Family 12 Chapter 10: Am I losing my mind? 13 Section 3: Surviving and Thriving: The New Normal 14 Chapter 11: A Blueprint for Health 15 Chapter 12: Resources 16 Chapter 13: Bibliography

  • A Gastroenterologists Guide to Gut Health

Rowman & Littlefield A Gastroenterologists Guide to Gut Health

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMillions of Americans have complaints about, or disorders of, the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, or pancreas, all of which comprise the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This book provides accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information on the most common GI disorders.Written by a gastroenterologist with decades of clinical and research experience, A Gastroenterologist's Guide to Gut Health provides the advice that Dr. Novick gives to patients in his practice every day, written in a clear, conversational, and easily understandable style. Advocating strongly for colon cancer screening and prevention, he walks readers through the process of colonoscopy, demystifying the procedure so patients know exactly what to expect. A review of alternatives to colonoscopy are also included. In addition to colonoscopy and colon cancer, Dr. Novick reviews irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), celiac disease, acid reflux, hepatitis Trade ReviewIn easy-to-understand language, Novick, a gastroenterologist, explains the many problems that can arise in the gastrointestinal tract. He rightly starts with the biggest one: colon cancer. Last year, 134,490 Americans were diagnosed with it, and 49,190 Americans died from it. Novick includes many interesting details about the bowel prep and anesthesia required for colonoscopies. For example, most patients get what’s called 'conscious' or 'twilight' sedation for their colonoscopies, but doctors prefer to use total IV anesthesia in patients who drink heavily or who regularly use sedatives or opioid pain medications. Novick also ably covers many other GI problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, and heartburn. Without passing judgment, he notes that excessive alcohol use is a risk factor for pancreatitis, and smoking and obesity are risk factors for pancreatic cancer. At the end, he shares 19 patient-empowering tips for getting the most from doctor visits, including knowing that it’s OK not to accept every recommendation. And he includes a bibliography and index—and a helpful glossary that explains unfamiliar terms like villous adenoma. (It’s a colon polyp.) Charts and shaded boxes also make this guide reader-friendly. * Booklist *[Dr. Novick’s] book focuses primarily on our internal health and well being – a subject which, unfortunately, many people feel uncomfortable discussing. The book, which is very well-written and easy for anyone to understand, is copiously illustrated and contains chapters on colonoscopies, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, heartburn and acid reflux, liver disease, and how to maintain good eating habits…. I cannot recommend Dr. Novick’s new book highly enough…. Novick’s easy, relaxed writing style belies his expertise, really shining and making it easy for the lay reader to grasp the material…. Dr. David Novick has written a simple yet important book, one whose information is – forgive me – easily digested, and one which all adults need to examine. * Dayton City Paper *The gut is one of the most important parts of our body, keeping it in shape is a key to staying healthy. I am delighted to see that my long-time friend Dr. Novick took the time to explain the functions of each part of our gut, the consequences if our gut is not in good shape, and how to prevent gastrointestinal and liver diseases. This book combines up-to-date medical information and decades of experience of the author. It is an easy read for everyone interested in maintaining gut health or in keeping gut ailments away. -- Anna S. Lok, MD, Director of Clinical Hepatology, Assistant Dean for Clinical Research, University of MichiganAn appealing and informative book that belongs in every doctor’s waiting room! Gastroenterology procedures scare people, but this book will reassure them. -- Martha Moody, physician and best-selling author of Best Friends and Sharp and Dangerous VirtuesDespite all the publicity, too many people do not get colon cancer screening or other needed care. Dr. Novick’s book uses clear medical writing and humor to help people overcome their fears. -- Annie Roboff, song and music writer, This Kiss, That’s the Way, and UnbrokenI wish I had this book before my colonoscopy, as it would have assuaged my fears about how a colonoscopy will feel (like nothing!) and calmed my nerves about what I might say under sedation (which thankfully wasn't much). -- Courtney Reagan, CNBC reporterDr. Novick’s book is the third in recent years to clearly explain the digestive system. Gut brilliantly explains how it works, Gulp gives the fascinating back-stories, and this book gives you the elements of successful diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Novick’s expertise provides authentic and accessible information regarding gut health. This is a book everyone should read. -- Anne Marie Romer, RN, GI Nurse and Author of Blog, The Space BetweenAs an advocate for people to have colonoscopies (an earlier one could have saved my husband’s life), I found this book to be ‘just what the doctor ordered.’ If one life is saved through this book, then Dr. Novick’s commitment and hard work will have been worth it. Book SynopsisBy turns, it is riotous, deeply serious, practical and sad. Reading it is like being at her kitchen table with a glass of wine to hand. (Daily Telegraph)Lynda Bellingham was a tremendously gifted storyteller with a rich collection of tales of love, loss and laughter and this memoir brings her kind heart, courage and emotion to the page in vivid detail. There''s Something I''ve Been Dying To Tell You is a brave memoir about Lynda''s battle with cancer, facing death she found joy and shared it with millions. Her story is an affecting and at times heart-breaking one but it is so often laugh-out-loud too and ultimately the way Lynda told her life story serves as a great inspiration to us all. Woven into this very moving and brave story are extraordinary, colourful tales of her acting and family life that will enlighten and entertain as well as the journey that Lynda has taken to find the family of her birth father having already suffered heartache in her seTrade ReviewHer brilliantly titled book, There's Something I've Been Dying to Tell You, charts the unravelling of that delusion, and her determination to wrest a meaningful life out of sudden chaos. By turns, it is riotous, deeply serious, practical and sad. Reading it is like being at her kitchen table with a glass of wine to hand. Not just listening to the expletives of pain or the dawning of reality, but rooting for her when the treatment appears to be working, sharing her fears as her life expectation dwindles, and rocking with laughter at the absurdities that go with having the "least sexy" cancer of them all. Her description of the mechanics of dealing with a stoma bag in the ladies' at Buckingham Palace, when she accepted her OBE in March, reads like a comedy script. * Daily Telegraph *Bellingham has started a necessary conversation where often there is silence. The rest of us look on at these extraordinary people and wonder how we ourselves would manage. I am so grateful that such people are speaking out, now while they can. * Guardian *I laughed and I cried. The strength shines through in the whole book and the honesty. A fantastic woman. * Coleen Nolan *Touching and honest...It may be packed with heartfelt emotion, but don't expect to be wiping your eyes every time you turn the page - Lynda's cheeky humour is woven through every chapter. It's the perfect memoir from a much-missed star. * BEST Magazine *Moving and inspirational. A fitting memorial to an amazing woman. * Daily Express *Lynda's book is chirpy, positive, magnificently sane and, paradoxically reassuring. * Daily Mail *The actress bore no bones about sharing some of the most intimate details about her bowel cancer, and did so with admirable honesty. * Independent *The rawness of their situation is undeniably distressing, but what leaps from the pages is Lynda's stoicism and determination not to let sadness destroy her spirit. * Daily Mail *Praise for Lost and Found by Lynda Bellingham * : *Courageous... searingly honest * Mail on Sunday *A gripping tale of triumph over adversity * Woman's Own *Very honest -- Phillip Schofield * This Morning *
