Brown Dog Books COVID CANCER CRAIC: Coping with a death sentence

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisBeing diagnosed with incurable cancer that had spread to the liver and bones, might justifiably be regarded as a bad day at the oncologist’s office. Add to this a fractured neck, a life expectancy of six months and isolation from loved ones due to Covid lockdowns, and one could be forgiven for descending into the depth of despair. But not Issy Hogg. On receiving the news, this indefatigable and fun-loving defence lawyer told her oncologist, in true Shakespearean style, that she had no intention of ‘shuffling off this mortal coil’ anytime soon. Issy then began regaling family and friends with a series of amusing and inspirational posts providing updates on her experience in hospital, treatment programme and anecdotes from an eventful professional and personal life. Over a year beyond her death sentence, Issy has committed her experiences to this book. The primary aim being to share the overwhelming benefits of positive thought and a, literary, ‘never say die’ approach with those who encounter or fear unwelcome life-changing events of whatever nature.

Book Synopsis''A brave, beautiful book that could double as a handbook to accompany anyone on their journey through cancer'' Jackie Kay, New StatesmanThe Cancer Journals is an intimate, poetic and invigorating account of the experience of breast cancer, from biopsy to mastectomy, told by the great feminist and activist Audre Lorde.Moving between journal entry, memoir, and essay, Lorde fuses the personal and political to reflect on the many questions breast cancer raises: questions of survival, sexuality, prosthesis and self-care. It is a journey of survival, friendship, and self-acceptance. ''Grief, terror, courage, the passion for survival and for more than survival, are here in the searchings of a great poet'' Adrienne Rich''This book teaches me that with one breast or none, I am still me'' Alice WalkerTrade ReviewLorde's big heart and fierce mind are at full strength on each page of this deeply personal and deeply political collection ... A raw reckoning with illness and death as well as a challenge to the conventional expectations of women with cancer. More universally, Lorde's rage and the clarity that follows offer us a blueprint for facing our mortality and living boldly in the time we have. This empowering compilation is heartbreaking, beautiful, and timeless. * Kirkus STARRED REVIEW *Radiates with rebellion, even decades later... she is both brave and right. Embracing her one-breasted self, Lorde refuses to render invisible her difference and the experience of pain that is somehow embarrassing to others... There is inspiration in Lorde's position, for me and for all women who have spent time in doctors' offices and surgeries... Making my way through the book's pages, I found a different model of feminist power - not a sidestepping of sickness, but a defiant avowal of the reality of pain and respect for the transformed self it leaves behind -- Rafia Zakaria * Guardian *

Book Synopsis'Claire's honest, raw, authentic diaries will be a source of comfort to many'- Miranda Hart At the age of 54 Claire Gilbert was diagnosed with myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood. The prognoses ranged from surviving only a few months to living for several decades, with no guarantee of which outcome was to be hers. It was a shocking diagnosis into uncertainty, or rather, into only one certainty: death. But Claire discovered that facing her own mortality was liberating. She discovered this through writing letters. Claire asked her siblings and a small group of friends if they would let her write to them with total honesty about what she was going through, as she was going through it. These letters turned out to be a great solace, and gradually her group of 'dear readers' has grown; what she had to say wasn't just of value to herself, but to others, too. The letters chart Claire's journey through diagnosis, chemotherapy and a brutal round of stem cell treatment, and end with the rest of the UK joining her in her immuno-compromised isolation in March 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic hit. Unflinchingly honest and wide-ranging, Claire writes about the restorative role of nature, politics, poetry, humour - and a restless exploration of the spiritual dimension of death and dying. This is an honest, luminous account of what Claire has gone through and what keeps her going, a deeply spiritual meditation on life and suffering, and an exploration of how faith is no simple solace but provides a whole new plane of meaning during these liminal moments.'Claire Gilbert's account of the progress of her fatal illness, from diagnosis through various traumatic treatments, is in turn candid, painful, funny, tender, fierce and philosophical. But most of all it is a marvellously enjoyable read depicting the human spirit at its finest: defiant, exuberant, joyous. An example to us all that we can triumph over the cruellest adversity'- Salley VickersTrade ReviewDiagnosed with myeloma aged 54, and 'given' maybe months, maybe decades to live, Gilbert began writing to people dear to her, charting the course of her diagnosis and treatment, with honesty, gratitude, humour, even elation. Shining through the darkness of her letters there are moments of epiphany, comfort and inspiration; there are poems and pedicures, art and acupuncture, lipstick and Larkin, her faith and her partner, Sean. 'Walk with me,' she invites, and we are honoured to do so. * Saga *intense, evocative and moving * Irish Times Weekend *The story that Gilbert tells is an honest one, full of pain, fear and bitter truth * Irish Examiner *If you are interested in reflections on life and death from someone who has stood in the wrinkle of time where the two almost touch, it's a great read ... a warm, witty, harrowing, captivating contemplation of disease, weakness, mortality and life ... The writing is literary, elegant and very beautiful, the book well-paced and finely balanced ... leavened with humorous observations and joyful delight. * Christianity Magazine *Claire Gilbert's Miles to go Before I Sleep is a wonderful book...I was moved. -- JOHN DEMPSTER * The Inverness Courier *'This is not a book about dying, but, rather, a book about how facing death enables us truly to live.' * The Church Times *'Gilbert holds nothing back...[and] has an eye for small detail...What fills the book is the undoubted need for human companionship, love, support and prayers from her 'community of kindness'.' * The Pastoral Review *

Book SynopsisA groundbreaking, comprehensive guide for managing, treating and preventing cancer. It’s a sad truth of our times that one in three people will experience cancer in their lifetime. By 2040, the probability will rise to one in two. Holistic Cancer Medicine is for cancer patients – from newly diagnosed to the late stage – as well as a comprehensive guide on how to reduce the risk of cancer in the first place. Dr Henning Saupe’s programme focusses on how those affected by cancer can carry out treatment to cure or control the disease while maintaining quality of life. As the founder and director of Germany’s leading complementary cancer clinic, Dr Saupe offers Holistic Cancer Medicine as the culmination of twenty-five years of experience treating the disease. Dr Saupe complements standard treatment models with less burdensome, less invasive and more natural methods. Dr Saupe identifies The Holistic Model of the Twelve Vital Fields, describing the dynamic interplay between, nutrition, circulation, the microbiome, mitochondrial health, acid-base balance, chronic infections and more. He shares innovative treatments that address specific imbalances in the twelve vital fields, as well as specific tumour-killing methods, such as insulin potentiation therapy (IPT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), local and whole-body hyperthermia and pulsating electromagnetic frequency therapy (PEMF). He also details inner-life training (ILT) and affirmations for both physical and emotional pain, as well as tools for palliative care. Holistic Cancer Medicine is not just for cancer patients, but relatives, friends and colleagues supporting loved ones through the stages of cancer. It is also for people seeking to prevent the disease. An essential read during a critical time of life, this is a groundbreaking book on cancer care with an essential and compassionate message – that a diagnosis of cancer and living a full, vibrant life are not mutually exclusive.Trade Review“Dr. Saupe’s comprehensive new book shows that there is so much a person can do to treat and prevent cancer in addition to conventional medicine. If you want to gain a thorough understanding of cancer cells and the immune system, I highly recommend Holistic Cancer Medicine.” —Kelly A. Turner, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of Radical Hope and Radical Remission“We need a new path forward in the realm of cancer; not only for the way we think about the formation of this devastating process but also in its treatment. Dr. Henning Saupe’s new book accomplishes both of those things by reworking the very foundation of cancer science, making this a ‘must read’ for anyone serious about understanding how cancer begins and what we can do about it.” —Dr. Chris Chlebowski, author of The Virus and The Host“Dr Saupe is one of the few medical professionals who truly understands the meaning of ‘holistic’ in the context of treating cancer. In Holistic Cancer Medicine, Dr. Saupe not only covers specific treatment strategies that can be key to recovery and healing, he also addresses the limitations of certain treatment and diagnostic approaches, and how to incorporate them effectively. Dr. Saupe tackles delicate and complex discussions in a highly approachable, humble, and practical way without being overwhelming or dogmatic, and the scientific rationale he offers will leave you in awe of both the simplicity and complexity of the human body—and what it truly means to heal and recover.” —Patricia Daly, coauthor of The Ketogenic Kitchen“As a clinical oncologist, I cannot over-emphasize the value of Holistic Cancer Medicine. In it, Dr. Henning Saupe covers authentic and scientifically proven holistic treatments for cancer, with profound potential to change how we view and respond to a cancer diagnosis. Determining root causes and changing mindsets with simple interventions and lifestyle modifications, holistic cancer treatment can be a game changer for our patients’ prognoses and quality of life, under the supervision of a trained holistic or integrative doctor. Let the healing begin!” —Dr. Wafaa Abdel-Hadi, clinical oncologist; founder, AWARE clinic“The integrative oncology community is a small and diverse mix of practitioners from all over the globe. Though we may differ on philosophy and approach, we align at the core: that there is much more to be done to support the patient dealing with a cancerous process than the standard of care alone can offer. I have traveled the world to observe and study with many practitioners—from standard-of-care, state-of-the-art hospitals to shamans in remote villages—and I always learn something new! No one person has all the answers. Just as there are unique fingerprints, there are unique perspectives and approaches to tend to the terrain of the individual. Having had the honor of visiting Dr. Saupe’s beautiful clinic, spending time with his patients, and presenting together at some international conferences, it is clear we resonate deeply in how we think about and care for the patient. Dr. Saupe’s personal and professional experience offer insights to invoke the curiosity and commitment of the patient into taking a more comprehensive look and approach to their cancer care process.” —Dr. Nasha Winters, founder and CEO, drnasha.com; coauthor of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer and Mistletoe and the Emerging Future of Integrative Oncology“Holistic Cancer Medicine is a fascinating and important book written by a highly knowledgeable doctor. Dr. Henning Saupe shares his experience and passion in this essential read. A must-read for anyone who wants to empower themselves.” —Sophie Trew, cofounder, Trew Fields Festival; cancer survivor and cancer coach“Holistic Cancer Medicine is a must-read for everyone—doctors, nurses, patients, family members, and anyone who wants to prevent cancer. Not only does the book inform you about the twelve vital fields involved in healing cancer; it also teaches you how to prevent cancer in the first place by creating balance and well-being in the body.” —Katie Deming, MD, radiation oncologist

Book SynopsisYou're diagnosed with an aggressive cancer - what do you do? Devamitra - English actor and Buddhist teacher - describes the discomforts and indignities of being treated for prostate cancer. He also draws on the deep well of his Buddhist practice to work with his mind and meet fear, uncertainty and frailty with resolve. It is an entertaining read, full of wit and fantastically funny dialogue. If you or someone you know is facing a cancer diagnosis, this book will help light your way.Trade ReviewI read this book in one sitting! It is very amusing for such a fearful subject and demystifying in its impact. Devamitra captured it optically in one's mind and poetically, 'Life is gossamer at the mercy of shifting winds.' It has real whimsical charm. I hope it is read by many, especially men. - Corrine Bougaard, Founder, Artistic Director and Producer, Union Dance; Devamitra has written a compelling book about his cancer journey that straddles a wide range of emotions: gruelling, funny, poignant and uplifting. As a reader you are drawn into his world as he undergoes particularly challenging cancer treatment, whilst always maintaining a uniquely wry, even amused, perspective on life and death. All the way through he reflects on what Buddhism has to offer his predicament, and clearly the strength of his practice helps him to not only navigate this journey with character, but to emerge enriched. The timeless teachings of the Buddha are truly tested in the fires of his experience, and the confidence and faith he finds in these teachings can inspire confidence and faith in all of us. - Vidyamala Burch, co-founder of Breathworks, author of Living Well with Pain and Illness and Mindfulness for Health; Entertaining Cancer: The Buddhist Way is a remarkable book - honest, lucid, unflinching, funny and radical in its willingness to confront the facts of life and death. Devamitra's book tells the story of prostate cancer, and how his Buddhist practice met the challenges of diagnosis and treatment, even how cancer led to the deepening of his Buddhist practice and his love of life. Entertaining Cancer: The Buddhist Way is not just for those struggling with illness or the fear of death; anyone interested in how Buddhism can help us live with courage, wit and generosity will find answers in this book. - Maitreyabandhu, author of Life with Full Attention and The Journey and the Guide; Devamitra, a senior member of the Triratna Buddhist Order, provides a very entertaining memoir on his prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is an acutely observed and often painful account of a long ordeal, yet one liberally laced with wit and irony, gratitude and compassion. He writes fluidly and candidly, revealing the frustrations, joys and contradictions of modern health care, with pithy and amusing sketches of the situations and personalities he encounters. Although the subject is serious, he writes with a light touch and always warmly. Many changeable thoughts and feelings come with the almost uncountable succession of ills afforded by the treatment, in stark contrast with the trivial presenting symptom of his cancer. The narrative flows easily, revealing almost incidentally to this reader, how life is on the 'other side' of the consulting desk; the interminable hours in the chemotherapy suite, holding a tight bladder under the 'Saturn' or 'Mars' radiation unit; and enduring the punishment of his legs, at one time becoming incessantly restless, another time lifeless with fatigue. There is systemic enervation that confines him to bed, a numbness that impairs finger function, the skin changes, fingernails and hair fall out and more. Yet consolation comes in the way of music and from the love and care of friends. Devamitra writes movingly of his appreciation for their help, his affection for them equal to his love for the Buddha's teaching and path, and how this savage trial provides opportunity for deep understanding of the impermanent and conditional nature of human life. He realizes how much he longs to live only for the Buddha's teaching and to communicate it, to reach out to those suffering and in need. Whenever the time comes for the author to leave us, this heartfelt, humorous and insightful account will no doubt be his 'parting kiss'. - Siladasa (Dr Mark R. Newton, FRACP); Quite often stories about cancer are framed in terms of a battle. This isn't always helpful, as it implies that disease progression means defeat or failure on the part of the sufferer. Devamitra frames his account with interweaving themes of struggle, victory and setback, yes, but also of calm and insight. He brings to the story his physicality as a serious, life-long swimmer; his variable energy levels from the disease and the treatment; the importance of friendship; and the impact of words spoken during consultations with his doctors, nurses and acupuncturist. We hear this story flavoured with his love of romantic poetry, his deep engagement with Buddhist teachings and practice, and his devotion to his teacher. I got to know Devamitra well in 1978, when he led the Buddhist retreat during which I joined the Triratna Buddhist Order. Our lives have intertwined since then in many ways, no doubt with some disagreements along the way! What a pleasure to read this book and get closer to the man and his wry, entertaining but deep reflections on life, cancer and everything. - William Stones, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and researcher in global health; Who would have thought that having cancer could be so instructive - and at times so amusing? Devamitra writes of his experiences with a style unique to him: beautifully crafted, engaging, witty, poignant, reflective and always disarmingly honest. If you have not had cancer you will surely understand what it means from reading this book. And if you have it now you will find a companion here who has faced with courage and clarity the terrors and indignities of this great test of character. Devamitra faces his test as a Buddhist, but he wears his Buddhism lightly, even though it is Buddhism that guides him through it. For him Buddhism is simply the truth about life, not a set of dogmatic beliefs, and so his writing is relevant whether or not you are a Buddhist. I recommend this book very highly. - Subhuti, author of Mind in HarmonyTable of ContentsAuthor's Acknowledgements Publisher's Acknowledgements Prologue Chapter 1 Diagnosis Chapter 2 Chemo Limbo - Impact Chapter 3 Chemo Sostenuto Chapter 4 Chemo's Parting Kiss Chapter 5 Chemo's Ghost Chapter 6 Susie and the Skunk Chapter 7 Living Paradoxes Chapter 8 Surviving Chapter 9 Testosterone Toll Epilogue Notes and References

  • Cancer and the New Biology of Water

Chelsea Green Publishing Co Cancer and the New Biology of Water

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy the War on Cancer Has Failed and What That Means for More Effective Prevention and Treatment A groundbreaking look at the role of water in living organisms that ultimately brings us closer to answering the riddle of the etiology of, and therapy and treatment for, cancer When President Nixon launched the War on Cancer with the signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971 and the allocation of billions of research dollars, it was amidst a flurry of promises that a cure was within reach. The research establishment was trumpeting the discovery of oncogenes, the genes that supposedly cause cancer. As soon as we identified them and treated cancer patients accordingly, cancer would become a thing of the past. Fifty years later it’s clear that the War on Cancer has failed—despite what the cancer industry wants us to believe. New diagnoses have continued to climb; one in three people in the United States can now expect to battle cancer during their lifetime. For the majority of common cancers, the search for oncogenes has not changed the treatment: We’re still treating with the same old triad of removing (surgery), burning out (radiation), or poisoning (chemotherapy). In Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Thomas Cowan, MD, argues that this failure was inevitable because the oncogene theory is incorrect—or at least incomplete—and based on a flawed concept of biology in which DNA controls our cellular function and therefore our health. Instead, Dr. Cowan tells us, the somatic mutations seen in cancer cells are the result of a cellular deterioration that has little to do with oncogenes, DNA, or even the nucleus. The root cause is metabolic dysfunction that deteriorates the structured water that forms the basis of cytoplasmic—and therefore, cellular—health. Despite mainstream medicine’s failure to bring an end to suffering or deliver on its promises, it remains illegal for physicians to prescribe anything other than the “standard of care” for their cancer patients—no matter how dangerous and ineffective that standard may be—and despite the fact that gentler, more effective, and more promising treatments exist. While Dr. Cowan acknowledges that all of these treatments need more research, Cancer and the New Biology of Water is an impassioned plea from a long-time physician that these promising treatments merit our attention and research dollars and that patients have the right to information, options, and medical freedom in matters of their own life and death.Trade ReviewForeword— “In Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Thomas Cowan presents a lengthy list of promising alternatives and complements to the standard treatment. Moreover, he details a radical new theory about how the state of the water in our cells greatly affects overall health. . . . As in his two other important books, Cowan’s writing is compelling and eminently hopeful."“Dr. Cowan provides a provocative overview of the philosophy of medicine in relationship to the issue of cancer. He discusses multiple alternative, nontoxic cancer therapeutic strategies that are especially relevant in light of a failed medical system.”—Dr. Thomas Seyfried, professor, Boston College; author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease“Cancer has perplexed generations of doctors and continues to puzzle and confound. I believe in clinical experience, however, and Dr. Cowan has plenty of clinical experience to share. As usual, his thinking is unconventional and compelling. This book affirms that the answer to the riddle of cancer is to be found only in nature and natural means of assisting the body in healing itself.”—Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome“In Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Dr. Cowan dismantles the conventional explanation of how cancers grow with a credible counter-explanation based on the fourth phase of water. This not only gives us a biologically plausible mechanism for the etiology and growth of cancer, but also explains some of the many ‘miracle cures’ that we know exist but which cannot be explained by conventional theory. It only takes one fact to disprove a hypothesis, and the conventional medical explanation of cancer is destroyed by the multiplicity of facts presented by Dr. Cowan in this wonderful book. “Most importantly Dr. Cowan explains what can be done, mostly without physician intervention, to allow the body to heal itself. All who wish to avoid cancer, and those who face stark choices as to how to manage their disease, must read this book and take control of their health. This book has changed my thinking and shaped my medical practice. Buy it, read it, and do it.”—Dr. Sarah Myhill, author of Sustainable Medicine and Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis“An eye-opening book. With insights developed from years of medical practice and original thinking, Dr. Cowan presents evidence for an unsuspected protagonist in the development of cancer: water. He not only argues that the gel-like state of the cell, created by water’s structure, serves as the basis of cellular organization and function, but also that any compromise of that gel-like state can trigger the development of cancer. He connects well with readers, weaving threads of sensitivity and humanity through the fabric of the book. At the same time, he is not shy to criticize the cancer establishment for its narrow focus on genetics—which has arguably produced few gains over many decades. Highly recommended, not only for those interested in cancer—who isn’t?—but also for anyone interested in logical thinking in science.”—Gerald H. Pollack, PhD, professor, University of Washington; author of The Fourth Phase of Water“As a doctor who wholeheartedly supports a terrain-centric approach to the prevention and treatment of cancer, I found Dr. Cowan’s book refreshing and inspiring. With nearly half the US population expected to have a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, it is crucial to understand why in order to change these statistics. Dr. Cowan has never shied away from questioning conventional wisdom about the health-disease continuum, and this book is no different. In examining why the standard of care often falls far short of a positive outcome for those with cancer, Dr. Cowan dives into the disease’s actual metabolic and cytoplasmic origins—as opposed to perceived genetic origins—and explains cancer as the result of the fundamental breakdown of a crucial element within our cells: water. For decades, many of us have been exploring a terrain-centric approach to this devastating disease process—one of damaged mitochondria, murky cytoplasm, and a deviation from our true nature. Now, with Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Dr. Cowan makes another important contribution to that growing body of work, bringing vitalism back into modern medicine, examining the role of structured water in cellular health, and inviting us all to consider some truly out of the box thinking to address this growing epidemic.”—Dr. Nasha Winters, coauthor of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer“Dr. Cowan has written a must-read for anyone on their cancer journey. Cancer and the New Biology of Water is filled with research on promising treatment options that help to bridge the gap between conventional and integrative medicine.”—Ivelisse Page, executive director and cofounder, Believe Big

Book SynopsisA practical book written for both health professionals and the layperson, this newly revised guide deconstructs common myths about the use of massage in cancer treatment. Reviewing literature that shows cancer to be caused by genetic mutation and the influence of hormones, the opening discussion emphasises that mechanical action such as massage does not break tumours open or cause them to spread. The book purports that the real medical issues for massage therapists centre on ameliorating the discomfort of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. The topics covered include massage in hospitals, in respite care, for the dying and for exhausted carers, with appendices summarising research on oncology patients and massage. Charts for the adjustment of massage techniques according to the treatment a patient is undergoing are also included. This new edition contains updated information and insights into massaging people affected by cancer. New chapters have been added to cover each stage of the cancer experience: treatment, recovery, survivorship, side effects from the disease and end of life. As well, a new chapter has been added that focuses on the Pressure/Site/Positioning framework. This is the clinical framework around which the massage session is planned. Also updated is the scientific research on the effects of massage for people with cancer as well as material devoted to massaging young adult survivors, the person with breast reconstruction, cording and late effects as well as thoughts for therapists and clients who are considering the use of massage as part of a detoxification process. Written exercises have been added for student therapists and all of those who want to participate in their own learning. As well, sample session write-ups have been included to show the reader the variety of touch modalities that can be used to for people living with cancer.

But that fear is in some ways outdated, as it fails to account for the medical progress made against this family of diseases. In Curing Cancerphobia, David Ropeik reveals the fascinating historical and psychological roots of our fear of cancer and documents the dramatic health and financial harms caused when that fear exceeds the risk. Fear of cancer drives millions for whom screening is not recommended to screen for the disease anyway, producing tens of thousands of emotionally damaging false positives and costing the US health care system an estimated $9.2 billion a year. At the same time, fear of cancer also causes many people for whom screening is recommended to avoid it altogether. * Christianity Magazine *

Book SynopsisWith or Without Me is a book for everyone – believer or unbeliever, Christian or atheist– who refuses to surrender to the idea that there are easy answers to the big questions in life.Doubt about God’s goodness in the face of grief is natural. With or Without Me is one woman’s unsparing and eloquent memoir about the inadequacy of religion and philosophy to answer her emotional pain. Yet Esther Maria Magnis’s rejection of God is merely the beginning of a tortuous journey back to faith – one punctuated by personal losses retold with bluntness and immediacy. Magnis knows believing in God is anything but easy. Because he allows people to suffer. Because he’s invisible. And silent. “A must read for anyone who has ever pondered the meaning of life” – Lydia S. Dugdale, Author of The Lost Art of DyingTrade Review“I have not known anyone since Nietzsche who shows so shockingly what a catastrophe it is to not believe in God." —Robert Spaemann"There are not many who dare to speak of God as unabashedly as Esther Maria Magnis." —Public ForumWith or Without Me is utterly necessary. With or Without Me is an honest account of death, bereavement and grief which lays bare what it means to love and lose. —Inspire MagazineFaith is like a piece of quartz that Magnis turns over in her palm, examining all its angles, the sharp edges and the shine. This lends With or Without Me a thoughtful and introspective quality, contemplative without being meandering... Book SynopsisWhen Catherine is diagnosed with acute leukemia, a deadly form of cancer that attacks the immune system, her life is turned upside down. Young and previously healthy, she now finds herself catapulted into the world of the seriously ill—constantly testing and waiting for results, undergoing endless medical treatments, learning to accept a changing body, communicating with a medical team, and relying on the support of her partner, family, and friends.A professional illustrator, Catherine decides to tell the story of her disease in this graphic novel, and she does so with great sincerity, humor, and rare lucidity. We accompany her through the waiting, the doubts, the fears, and the tears—but also the laughter, the love, and the strong will to live.Rich in emotion, lighthearted, and profound, Down to the Bone is a powerful book.Trade Review“A stunning example of what graphic medicine can do.”—starred review Publishers Weekly“The narrative, the information about leukemia, and the details about her treatment that the book shares all have a sense of hope that made the graphic novel’s abrupt ending, with a short text note about Pioli’s death in 2017, all the more devastating.”—Gene Ambaum Library Comic“There is humor but far more humanity in Pioli’s story about a ‘rare’ cancer . . . that takes away a beautiful life and leaves sorrow in its wake. • Living with the Long-Term Effects of Cancer:

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Living with the Long-Term Effects of Cancer:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisChallenging a number of myths about living long term with or after cancer, this book offers new insights by delving into areas that are not usually spoken about. Written from a dual perspective- that of a psychologist who had breast cancer and who copes with the long-term effects of treatment - the book contests the assumption that the afflicted person will simply 'get better' or 'move through' to a better situation. Emotional and physical side-effects can worsen over time and people living beyond or with cancer often endure a mismatch between expectations and reality, because they have been told that life would be easier than it actually is. This can leave both those suffering longer term and those close to them confused and unprepared.Including testimonies with people who have had a cancer diagnosis and people in the medical profession, the book signposts ways that professionals may help and offers prompts for friends and relatives to have useful and open conversations with the person affected. It gives voice to many people who feel that their suffering is disputed and diminished by the prevailing narrative around recovery. Galgut includes discussion on relationships, work, trauma, fear of recurrence and the role of therapy. Giving an unflinchingly honest perspective, Living with the Long-Term Effects of Cancer sheds light on these struggles, in the belief that bringing this conversation to the forefront is key to improving life for those who are affected by cancer and who suffer longer term from its effects.Trade ReviewThis book is a remarkable testimony to the importance of psychological care, often missing in even our best cancer centres. Written by a psychologist and counsellor, who actually has been on her own cancer journey, she is well placed to analyse the basis of uncertainty every cancer patient will feel for the rest of their lives. The book is very readable and gratifyingly free of psycho-babble. It's very suitable for patients and their families as a useful aid to discussion. It contains interesting interviews with various cancer professionals who put forward their own perspectives. But the take home message is that whilst we can now cure more half of our cancer patients we need to do more to make sure their quality of life in body, mind and spirit is made as perfect as possible. Dr Galgut's short book is an excellent and thoughtful way into to this complex area for patients and indeed all health professionals dealing with cancer. -- Professor Karol Sikora, Consultant OncologistI have made so many notes, reading the book, that it looks like it has developed a severe case of measles. But the beauty of the book is that Dr. Galgut used medical language, albeit in easy-to-understand-form, so the reader can grab sentences from the copy and drop them into official letters, and use these when you write a letter about your treatment. There are lots of phrases to use that spring out from the pages, and after all - this is written by a doctor, so they gather their arguments in a 'medical' rather than an emotive way.Read it to reassure yourself you are NOT making a fuss. Here is a doctor who has experiencd the 'other' side, and is honest enough to admit there is a lot wrong with the way cancer patients can be treated. As I read it, I was nodding to myself in agreement - here was someone who had experiened the same problems as I had. -- After CancerThis book is a little package of experiences: not everyone suffers them but many do. Surely it's time to be realistic about the consequences of cancer treatment, the side effects which may last a lifetime.Truth telling is important but many shy away from facing hard experiences. Nevertheless it's time to be realistic about the short and long term side effects of cancer treatment for men as well as women. Not everyone suffers the life long pain and the fears, as well as the failure of those around them to understand, but very many do. Anyone who has read a previous book by Cordelia Galgut will know that she can make the hardest things readable and interesting, as she does here. All of us, doctors and patients, need this hard-hitting and truthful book. -- Ruth McCurry, Retired teacher and publisherBeing diagnosed with a malignant melanoma was the start of a journey, the most terrifying of my life as I go from check up to check up paranoid that every ache or pain is something sinister. I know that it's not a short journey I am in this for the long haul. Cordelia's book clearly illustrates what living with cancer is really like in a very honest, open and informative way from both from a sufferer's and counselling psychologist's perspective. It's particularly invaluable because she includes practical strategies for coping longer term, including allowing yourself to accept that what you are experiencing is real, and enabling you to have the conversations you need to have with medical professionals. -- Liz Lane, Retired Managing DirectorThis is a book I've been looking forward to reviewing. Dr Cordelia Galgut is a counselling psychologist, who writes from both the perspective of the professional, and as a cancer patient. She gets it....she understands that the cancer can leave deep emotional and physical scars. In her most recent book, she tackles head on, the often unspoken fact that many people who have had cancer can still suffer psychologically and physically for many years after the cancer treatment has passed. There is often a mismatch between what the health care professionals believe, which is that people will recover emotionally and physically over time - and the reality for some, who will still be struggling several years later. What I like about the book, is that it speaks for the person who has been through cancer, and gives pointers for health care professionals to understand how cancer still affects people many years after the original diagnosis. The book is broken down into nine chapters and covers a wide ranging number of relevant topics. This includes the fear of cancer's return, relationships, work, issues with male cancers, and the health care professional perspective. Threaded through the book are the author's personal perceptions. This provides an empathic and insightful view of how it is for those living with the long term effects of cancer. My big 'take home' message from reading this book is that the person's lived experience of cancer is very real....and the feelings and traumas post cancer can persist for many years. It's important that we who are listening to someone's story, validate their experience, and let people voice their reality. -- Sue Long, Online Cancer Support Specialist, Maggie’s CentresThe commitment, courage and insight of Ms Galgut displayed in this comprehensive account of the challenges of cancer survivorship 'from the front line' is both remarkable and inspiring. As one who has tried to support and campaign for hundreds of patients in these situations over thirty years I know that she speaks from the heart about what we all think, feel and endure. We can sincerely empathise with those living with fear and isolation in a world which says, 'Be glad you are alive'.This book needs wide distribution to sufferers in need of comfort and support. And -just as importantly - to medical professionals as a plea to listen and try to understand. -- Jan Millington, Cancer survivor with 'late effects'This is a very significant and courageous book for health professionals, patients, carers and family members written by a psychologist who was first diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer 15 years ago and is the author of two earlier books on emotional and physical effects of living with cancer... The chapters cover the struggle of facing up to long-term effects, the dread of recurrence, effects of cancer on relationships and work, and more detailed interviews with a nurse and three doctors as well as a separate chapter on the experience after treatment with male cancers. The book is clearly structured and written, with excellent summaries aimed at different constituencies. The analysis is incisive and frank: some of the deepest issues arise from an unconscious denial of our mortality when faced with the implications of cancer and, for patients, the dread of recurrence and having to undergo further painful and extended treatment when reserves of strength and resilience have already beensapped... The messages of this book could not be more important for our understanding of living with cancer, so it should be widely read and discussed. -- Paradigm ExplorerDr Galgut's book should be a must-read for patients who may be living with the longterm effects of treatment and who may have experienced some of the assumptions and prejudices that Dr Galgut writes about-they will benefit from the feeling of camaraderie that the topics covered in this book provide. This book is also an invaluable resource for health professionals, at any level, due to the plain language and inclusion of multiple resources, references and explanatory notes... I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in gaining a better understanding of the professional and patient issues regarding a diagnosis of cancer, its treatment and the long-term emotional and physical effects. Furthermore, it would be of interest to anyone who wishes to gain insight into the lived experience of someone with a dual perspective, as both health professional and patient. This is a perspective that Dr Galgut presents beautifully. -- Rhea Crichton, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pain, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust * British Journal of Nursing *Table of ContentsIntroduction. 1. Book SynopsisReluctant Rebels: My Family’s Fight for Survival is an inspiring story about the author’s battle with cancer and the significant impacts of that experience on her family. After a diagnosis of leukaemia at the age of eight, author Samantha Wilson went through a terrible journey of pain and suffering into her teenage years. Told that their child had weeks to live, her parents, Bernard and Kathleen didn’t give up. Turning to herbal medicine, they sought help from a well-known local herbalist, Mr Abbott and gradually, Samantha recovered. The book tells the story of how Samantha and her family dealt with the shock of the diagnosis and then, through relentless caring and support, helped her to survive. Step by step, Samantha began to live a normal life. Nonetheless, as well as a bout of meningitis, Samantha suffered bullying at the hands of both the children in her community and fierce objections from the authorities who tried to block her parents’ efforts to care for her outside the official system. After surviving a court case and media scrutiny, somehow, Samantha grew into adulthood and made a life for herself. But there were scars which remained affecting her own wellbeing, her parents’ marriage and her older brother who had been so supportive in helping her to stay alive. Years later, Samantha was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis and experienced a period of time suffering with mental health issues. She also had to help her family through difficult times and traumatic experiences. Reluctant Rebels: My Family’s Fight for Survival is a story that will give readers hope. At the time of her leukaemia diagnosis, most children suffering with the condition did not survive. With her family’s support and the help of complementary medicine, Samantha pulled through, an example of alternative therapy and what it can achieve. She faced all of these challenges with a firm commitment to stay positive and do what had to be done. Samantha Wilson went on to achieve an BSc in Complementary Medicine at Salford University and a PGDE at the University of Bolton. She is the Joint Owner/Managing Director at the White Opal Beauty and Holistic Training Academy. She lives in Bury, Greater Manchester, with her husband Brian and in her spare time, loves to see her son Ryan and his family and to go for long walks with her dog, Rio. Samantha hopes that Reluctant Rebels: My Family’s Fight for Survival will raise awareness of complementary medicine and help the sufferers of leukaemia and their families to never give up hope.

At the age of 35, I was blindsided by incurable bowel cancer - I was given less than an 8 per cent chance of surviving five years. Five years later, my only option was to live in the now and to value one day at a time. --------------------How do you turn your mind from a negative spiral into realistic and rebellious hope? And with the right skills and approach, we can all face huge challenges and find strength and hope in the darkest of places. How to Live When You Could Be Dead will show you how. Book SynopsisTraces the history of the study of tumor viruses and its role in driving breakthroughs in cancer research. Worldwide, approximately one-fifth of human cancers are caused by tumor viruses, with hepatitis B virus and HPV being the leading culprits. While the explosive growth in molecular biology in the late twentieth century is well known, the role that the study of tumor viruses has played in driving many of the greatest breakthroughs is not. Without the insights gained by studying tumor viruses, many significant theoretical advancements over the last four decades in cellular and molecular biology would not have been made. More practically, the study of tumor viruses has saved thousands, if not millions, of lives. In Cancer Virus Hunters, Gregory J. Morgan traces the high points in the development of tumor virology, from Peyton Rous's pioneering work on chicken tumors in 1909 to the successful development of an HPV vaccine for cervical cancer in 2006. Morgan offers a novel approach Trade ReviewThis is an impressively well-researched book.—Erling Norrby, MetascienceThis engaging book is written for a wide audience, and I would recommend it highly to investigators and students in the fields of virology and cancer biology. Researchers will enjoy learning the biographical background of the leaders in their field, and science historians will find it a useful adjunct to books and articles that provide more detailed scientific information.—Deborah H.
