  • Cambridge University Press Law and Empire in Late Antiquity

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the first systematic treatment in English by an historian of the nature, aims and efficacy of public law in late imperial Roman society from the third to the fifth century AD. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, and using the writings of lawyers and legal anthropologists, as well as those of historians, the book offers new interpretations of central questions: What was the law of late antiquity? How efficacious was late Roman law? What were contemporary attitudes to pain, and the function of punishment? Was the judicial system corrupt? How were disputes settled? Law is analysed as an evolving discipline, within a framework of principles by which even the emperor was bound. While law, through its language, was an expression of imperial power, it was also a means of communication between emperor and subject, and was used by citizens, poor as well as rich, to serve their own ends.Trade Review'This will become a standard work on late Roman law in its social and political context … the main reasoning of her book cannot easily be refuted. It is both a refreshingly thought-provoking study and a lucid introduction to the workings of late Roman law. It should be read by everyone interested in the law, administration and social relations of the Roman Empire.' Antti Arjava, ArctosTable of Contents1. The law of Late Antiquity; 2. Making the law; 3. The construction of authority; 4. The efficacy of law; 5. In court; 6. Crime and the problem of pain; 7. Punishment; 8. The corrupt judge; 9. Dispute settlement I: out of court; 10. Dispute settlement II: episcopalis audientia; Conclusion.

  • Cambridge University Press Maitland

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisF. W. Maitland (18501906) is perhaps the most celebrated English historian since Gibbon. This book is a collection of his later essays about the historical origins of the state, and is designed to bring them to the attention of political theorists and political scientists, as well as historians.Trade Review'… interesting and relevant for political theorists.' Political Studies Review'This delightful collection of essays in the Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought series is warmly to be welcomed. The effect is impressive. The book sheds considerable light on Maitland's interest in groups and its significance for political theorists and historians of political thought, in particular. The Cambridge edition is as much a tribute to the editors' erudition as it is to Maitland's. The greatly improved accessibility of all the essays is a boon to those interested in questions of law and the state, liberty and groups, and the adaptation of legal theory to life, in a historical and contemporary context.' History of Political ThoughtTable of ContentsEditors' introduction; Note on the text; Bibliographical notes; Biographical notes; Glossary of technical terms; Preface; The essays: 1. The corporation sole; 2. The Crown as corporation; 3. The unincorporate body; 4. Moral personality and legal personality; 5. Trust and corporation; Index.

  • Cambridge University Press The Cambridge Companion to Platos Republic Cambridge Companions to Philosophy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Companion provides a comprehensive account of this outstanding work, which remains among the most frequently read works of Greek philosophy, indeed of Classical antiquity in general. The sixteen essays, by authors who represent various academic disciplines, bring a spectrum of interpretive approaches to bear in order to aid the understanding of a wide-ranging audience, from first-time readers of the Republic who require guidance, to more experienced readers who wish to explore contemporary currents in the work's interpretation. The three initial chapters address aspects of the work as a whole. They are followed by essays that match closely the sequence in which topics are presented in the ten books of the Republic. Since the Republic returns frequently to the same topics by different routes, so do the authors of this volume, who provide the readers with divergent yet complementary perspectives by which to appreciate the Republic's principal concerns.Trade Review'Eminently suited to guide students, whether graduates or advanced undergraduates, through this intimidating text while at the same time introducing them to significant contemporary disputes in its interpretation. The Companions chapters … are to be congratulated for resisting the tendency to mystification.' Edward Butler, Metapsychology'A book that all admirers of Ethics with Aristotle will read with great pleasure.' Revue philsophique de LouvainTable of Contents1.
