  • Brill Chinese Research Perspectives on the Environment, Volume 1: Urban Challenges, Public Participation, and Natural Disasters

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisChinese Research Perspectives on the Environment (formerly The China Environment Yearbook), Volume 1, was written and produced by China’s first environmental non-profit organization, Friends of Nature. This edition of the book combines two years of reports on China's environment from the view of civil society. With a special focus on natural and unnatural disasters, the book also covers the themes of pollution and ecological protection, urban environmental issues and livability, sustainable consumption, policy and governance, civil society and public participation, and China and the world in an environmental perspective. In this volume, readers are brought up to date on the main environmental issues and events of 2010 and 2011. Beginning in 2010, debris flows, landslides, and droughts brought about considerable debate on the human factors involved in “natural disasters” and on China’s urban growth mode. The concept of urban livability is discussed within the backdrop of the waste and water crises. Several environmental incidents, including the Bohai Bay oil spill and the chromium slag pollution incident in Qujing, are also explored within the book. Meanwhile, increased public participation and environmental information transparency give reason for hope. Other articles include research and analysis on China’s investments in Africa, its struggling environmental courts, public interest litigation, the controversial Xiaonanhai dam and others on the Mekong River, green supply chains, and the PM2.5 debate.

  • Brill Spaces in-between: Cultural and Political Perspectives on Environmental Discourse

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSpaces in-between goes beyond the emphasis on externalities signalled by the term ‘environment’ to address the isolation of modern technological culture from nature. Solutions require more than an awareness of ‘natural surroundings’ and human destructiveness. We think in terms of the re-conceptualization, re-design and re-negotiation of space. The book is concerned with social practices, belief systems, urban designs, the organization and representation of landscapes and modes of living. These aspects of ‘spatiality’ suggest how to conceive and practice the intermingling of nature and culture and how to develop public commitment to such practices. In the process we show how concern for the environment as an aspect of space helps us to reconceive and reinterpret what it means to be human.Table of ContentsIntroduction Reconsidering Environment: Spatial Contexts and the Development of the Environmental Humanities, Mark Luccarelli and Sigurd Bergmann I: Lived Spaces & Political Contexts Strindberg’s Modern Ecological Subject: “Swedish Nature” Viewed From a Train, Linda Haverty Rugg The Romance of Reinhabitation: Jack London and Knut Hamsun, Peter Mortensen A Cosmopolitan Sense of Place, Carmen Flys Junquera Hannah Arendt on Transcendence in the Public Sphere, Firmin DeBrabander “City Creeks: Lessons in Sustainable Environmental Discourse from a Florida Boom Town”, Thomas Hallock Allotment and Community Gardens: Commons in German Cities, Werner Bigell II: Reconceiving Environmental Space Natural or Political Public Space? • Brill Chinese Research Perspectives on the Environment, Special Volume: Critical Essays on China's Environment and Development

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis collection features articles that originally appeared in the first three volumes of the Chinese edition of China Environment and Development Review. Written by longtime students of China’s environmental challenges and experts working on the research and policy-making frontlines, these pieces provide an evolutionary perspective on both the intellectual understanding of and efforts to address the country’s growing environmental woes. As the environmental condition has continued to worsen in recent decades, Chinese researchers have made admirable efforts toward grappling with the immensity of the problems, including institutional factors that have either compounded or obstructed efforts to mitigate them. Case studies show what works or does not in what will no doubt be a long and difficult journey toward sustainable development and environmental restoration.Table of ContentsForeword vii Zheng Yuxin List of Figures and Tables xi List of Contributors xiv 1 Introduction: China’s Environment and Development Challenges 1 Zheng Yisheng 2 Understanding Environmental Pollution in China: An Analysis of Its Key Features 21 Guo Xiaomin 3 China’s Forest Quality: The Missing Agenda 51 Shen Xiaohui 4 The Ecological Impact of Institutions and Policies on the Inner Mongolian Steppe Ecosystem 69 Dalintai 5 Understanding China’s Ecological Restoration Projects: A Study of the Grain for Green Program 87 Xu Jintao, Jiang Xuemei and Yi Fujin 6 Water Scarcity in China 99 Chen Shaojun 7 A New Approach to Conservation in Western China 117 Shen Xiaoli, Li Shengzhi and Lü Zhi 8 Natural versus Human Disturbances of Old-growth Forests 141 Shen Xiaohui, Piao Zhengji 9 Protecting Biodiversity by Means of Promoting Cultural Diversity: A Case Study of the Reindeer-herding Ewenki People 161 Han Nianyong 10 Environmental Rule of Law in China Today 173 Wang Jin and Wang Mingyuan 11 Local and Central Governments: Impulsive Investments and Sustainable Development 189 Shen Keting 12 Public Expenditure and China’s Environmental Targets 206 Wu Jian and Ma Zhong 13 Green GDP Accounting Research in China: Looking Back and Forward 213 Wang Jinnan, Yu Fang, Jiang Hongqiang, and Cao Dong 14 Green GDP Accounting in China: Controversies and Progress 230 Gao Minxue 15 Environmental Resource Allocation: Inefficiency and Inequity 245 Zhang Shiqiu 16 Ecological Values and Capitalism 258 Lu Feng 17 Water Scarcity, Water Transfer and Water Trade in China 268 Zhang Xiao 18 Water Rights: A Legal Analysis 293 Zhao Hongmei and Chen Jie 19 Breaching Barriers: Chinese Environmental NGOs Come of Age 311 Fu Tao Index 331

Book SynopsisGrazing animals enjoy an ambiguous reputation in the field of nature conservation. Livestock are often treated as a scourge, yet native large herbivores form the prime attraction of many a reserve. This book gives the first comprehensive overview of the use of grazing as a tool in conservation management. Considering in turn the ecological and historical background, the impact of grazing on community structure, management applications and future prospects, this book examines issues such as the role of herbivores as keystone species, the assessment of habitat quality and the function of scientific models in advancing grazing management. Large herbivores are shown to be potentially powerful allies in the management of nature reserves, particularly in the maintenance, enhancement or restoration of biodiversity. Grazing and Conservation Management will appeal to conservation biologists and rangeland managers, providing them with a clearer understanding of grazing and conservation management.Table of ContentsList of contributors.
