  • Tobacco Sheds

    Schiffer Publishing Ltd Tobacco Sheds

Book SynopsisIn recent years, over one thousand tobacco sheds have disappeared from the Tobacco Valley. This important book systematically catalogues tobacco sheds from Putney, Vermont, to Portland, Connecticut, a span of just over one hundred miles. The photographs capture the beauty of these unique farm buildings and serve as a valuable record for these endangered barns. The text offers the agricultural history of each town, helping to connect sheds to their own unique region of New England. In addition, the book reinforces the need for preserving one of New England's most unusual farm structures. Many sheds in the Connecticut River Valley are still used to dry tobacco leaves that will wrap some of the world's most expensive cigars, but, sadly, some are being left to slowly deteriorate over time or are being torn down to make way for development. This book will be treasured by cigar smokers and architectural historians and preservationists alike.

  • Moving Sam Maloof

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Moving Sam Maloof

Book SynopsisWorld-class woodworker Sam Maloof (1916-2009), the first craftsperson to receive a MacArthur Foundation grant, inhabited his family compound in Alta Loma, California, for 45 years until the State of California decided that a new highway was needed, and that the Maloof homestead was in the way. The result was the move, between 1998 and 2001, of the historic residence, two woodworking studios, guesthouse, and twenty trees to a new site three miles away. As it explores the human side of historic preservation, the book explains how Sam, a beleaguered but plucky elderly California Living Treasure and master woodworker, survives his historic property's relocation by the government. Construction manager and architect Ann Kovara relates this true story of how progress and tradition, public needs and private lives, managed to reach an accord.

Book SynopsisFor Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, monument protection is associated with challenges, but also opportunities. The volume sums up the history of monument protection, reflects on issues of building culture and provides examples of how 20th century architecture can be interpreted. The Sovietization of the Baltic region, which began in 1940, resulted in a multifaceted approach to monument protection issues, as these opened up certain scope for national self-expression even under Soviet rule. Since statehood was regained in 1991, there has also been the question of adequate protection for architectural monuments from the period of independence from 1918 or the Soviet era. At the same time, historically determined forms of building culture became visible, which appear specifically Baltic. The articles in this volume enable observations and comparisons to be made.

  • NIAS Press UNESCO in Southeast Asia: World Heritage Sites in

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisSoutheast Asia's 36 UNESCO World Heritage Sites make a significant contribution to their respective country's national prestige and identity, international profile and tourism development plans. Yet, although much is known about some individual sites like Angkor and Borobudur, we know very little about all sites in comparative terms. This wide-ranging study explores how both cultural and natural sites are being managed, how they are coping with the conflicting pressures from the global, national and local levels, and points to best practices for their future conservation and development. Some 20 sites across seven countries in the region are examined and placed in a historical, political, economic, environmental and cultural context. The contributors also focus on the tensions that exist between the often competing interests, understandings and agendas of the various stakeholders involved in these globally important sites. Although the importance of World Heritage Sites carries their significance and influence beyond their borders in that they are part of national and international flows of people, capital, ideas, images and values, they are also defined, bounded and localized spaces within which there are encounters, exchanges and conflicts. The first volume to address issues raised by world heritage in Southeast Asia, it will be a key resource for academic researchers and for policy- and decision-makers in this field of studies. This volume on world heritage and tourism completes a trilogy of publications by Professor King on tourism-related issues. The two earlier volumes - Tourism in Southeast Asia: Challenges and New Directions (2009) and Heritage Tourism in Southeast Asia (2010) - were jointly published by NIAS Press and the University of Hawai'i Press.
