Book SynopsisHow can traditions be subversive? The kinship between African traditions and novels has been under debate for the better part of a century, but the conversation has stagnated because of a slowness to question the terms on which it is based: orality vs. writing, tradition vs. modernity, epic vs. novel. These rigid binaries were, in fact, invented by colonialism and cemented by postcolonial identity politics. Thanks to this entrenched paradigm, far too much ink has been poured into the so-called Great Divide between oral and writing societies, and to the long-lamented decline of the ways of old.Given advances in social science and humanities research - studies in folklore, performance, invented traditions, colonial and postcolonial ethnography, history, and pop culture - the moment is right to rewrite this calcified literary history. This book is not another story of subverted traditions, but of subversive ones.West African epics like Sunjata, Samori, and Lat-Dior offer a space from which to think about, and criticize, the issues of today, just as novels in European languages do.Through readings of documented performances and major writers like Yambo Ouologuem and Amadou Hampâté Bâ of Mali, Ahmadou Kourouma of Ivory Coast, and Aminata Sow Fall and Boubacar Boris Diop of Senegal, this book conducts an entirely new analysis of West African oral epic and its relevance to contemporary world literature.

Book SynopsisThe work constitutes a type of masculinity in Russian literature of the second half of the 19th century and traces its development from pathetic, insect-like figures (Gogol's "The Coat", Čechov's "The Man in the Case", Andreev's "At the Window") to self-confident ones murderers (Dostoevsky's "The Gentle", Tolstoy's "Kreutzer Sonata", Tolstaya's "Whose Guilt", Andreev's "In the Fog"). Dostoevsky's "Untergrundmensch" ("Notes from the underground") occupies a central position, the variations of which are found in numerous texts of the time. The study shows the role played by the pathological loneliness of the characters on the narrative level, and the role played by gender relations and socio-historical hierarchies. Methodologically, it is based on the gender and masculinity studies of poststructuralism. The analysis of the texts shows the helplessness of a lonely, insecure male subject who rebels against a social order.

There are no safe places these days. Crime lurks behind every apartment building and every barn. Murders are committed in neighbouring apartments, outside church doors, in shisha bars or in potato fields. From a spatial perspective, lawbreaking has emancipated itself so to speak. This can also be observed in the literary universe of crime novels. Since the 1980s large cities, which have always been regarded as hotbeds of evil, have had strong competition from the criminal province, outstripping the metropolises as sin spaces par excellence. However, the province no longer implies security and isolation from the brutal outside world. The province stands for bloodshed and acts of violence, which are narratively negotiated in local crime novels. The aim of this volume is to get to the heart of these literary modes of crime from a narrative perspective.
