Lexington Books Health Care Disparities and the LGBT Population
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis collection particularly underscores the importance of two major health policy issues—gaps in access to insurance coverage for LGBT people and discrimination against transgender people in the health system—that health professionals and those working for LGBT equality alike need to take up in earnest, especially in the era of the opportunities for change offered by the Affordable Care Act. The book explicitly frames its engagement with LGBT health issues through the framework of the unprecedented progress in public policy that has been achieved over the last five years. It demonstrates how research and policy can go hand in hand to define opportunities for change, and it will help readers from all backgrounds craft real solutions that work for LGBTQ people, our families, and our communities. -- Kellan Baker, Center for American ProgressThe editors’ coverage of topics related to health disparities for sexual minority men and women is impressive. This comprehensive volume will be an essential resource for researchers and policy-makers, as well as health care providers and consumers, who are interested in understanding and ultimately reducing health disparities for the LGBT community. -- Robin Lewis, Old Dominion UniversityTable of ContentsForeword Gary L. Polity Press Words of the World
Book SynopsisThis bold and accessible study of human languages and communication explores issues which are at the forefront of today's globalized society. The human species is divided into more than five thousand language groups that do not understand each other.Trade Review"Abram de Swaan is the world's leading political sociologist of language. He has a profound knowledge of the complex history interlinking states and languages and an equally acute understanding of individual incentives to learn languages. Here he applies his insights and methods – with surprising results -- to globalization and its implications for the survival of world languages. Words of the World is both a pleasure to read and a remarkable contribution to political sociology." Professor David Laitin, Stanford University "...de Swaan's view is original and rich to the extent that it sheds new light on this problem...De Swaan's analysis is definitely new and fruitful for an understanding of the relations of power and language" Anais Bokobza, European University Institute, Florence, Italy "De Swaan's study is an impressive tour de force; it presents an original and refreshing social science perspective, is rich in empirical detail, rigorous in its theoretical elaboration, and written in an elegant and accessible style: a path-breaking study of language change and human communication in an age of globalisation." Johan Heilbron, Multilingual Matters "...this book is an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship among languages of the world in the era of globalisation. Polity Press Cultures of Mediatization
Book Synopsis* An engaging analysis of an emerging, cutting-edge area of media studies. * This accessible text draws is driven by empirical examples and terminology is clearly introduced and explained.Trade Review'The great virtue of Cultures of Mediatization is that the book proposes an entente cordiale between media scholarship and social theory. The idea of mediatization as a historical process—akin to other large-scale changes that have long preoccupied sociologists—is genuinely exciting. It is, in my view, the beachhead upon which a genuine dialogue could be launched.' International Journal of Communication 'This book is a contribution of major importance. It has a well-focused, original and stimulating argument which I think will quickly be recognized as taking current debates about mediatization considerably further forward.' Nick Couldry, Goldsmiths, University of London 'For those unfamiliar with the concept of mediatization, Andreas Hepp opens up some stimulating new directions for media studies. For those already working with the concept, Hepp’s integrative theoretical analysis plus refreshing questioning will prove equally stimulating.' Sonia Livingstone, London School of Economics and Political Science 'This book gives an original view on media cultures as cultures of mediatization. This clear and accessible text provides a good overview and introduction to the complex and hot topics on mediatization. It is a must for students, researchers and a general academic public interested in the media and social change.' This illuminating book gets beyond marketing hype to provide critical insights for understanding the powerful phenomenon of virality. Taylor & Francis Humor and the Healing Arts A Multimethod Analysis of Humor Use in Health Care Routledge Communication Series
Book SynopsisOffering a social scientific look at humor's role in medical transactions, this volume is based on extensive field study in seven medical settings. It includes excerpts from dozens of actual conversations between patients and caregivers. Analysis of these episodes reveals that humor is a practical tool used to meet many medical objectives. It is used by patients to good-naturedly complain and to campaign for more personal attention, and by caregivers to get attention, make amends, insist on unpleasant routines, and establish rapport. Examining humor from many angles, the book begins with a phenomenological analysis of the essence of funny. This section describes what makes some things funny but not others, and how to distinguish between potentially funny and unfunny episodes in medical situations. From an ethnographic perspective, joking around is shown to be a persuasive element of medical culture. Examples illustrate how patients and caregivers use humor to negotiate the dialectics between helping and hurting, and individuality and compliance. Additionally, a close-up look at three medical transactions shows how humor is used to help a physical therapy patient overcome fear and queasiness, reduce the embarrassment of a mammography, and defuse a potential conflict between a student aide and a young patient. A final section examines techniques for initiating conversational humor. In sum, this volume provides an intimate and realistic look at medical conversations as they are conducted every day. It serves as a valuable complement to health communication texts and offers information of interest to health communication scholars, healthcare practitioners, and anyone interested in the effects and techniques of conversational humor. Richly grounded in naturally occurring data, the book can be understood and used effectively by both scholars and practitioners.Table of ContentsContents: Preface. Part I: Background. Introduction.
