  • Brill Time Distortions in Mind: Temporal Processing in Clinical Populations

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTime Distortions in Mind brings together current research on aspects of temporal processing in clinical populations, in the ultimate hope of elucidating the interdependence between perturbations in timing and disturbances in the mind and brain. Such research may inform not only typical psychological functioning, but may also elucidate the psychological consequences of any pathophysiological differences in temporal processing. This collection of current knowledge on temporal processing in clinical populations is an excellent reference for the student and scientist interested in the topic, but it also serves as the stepping-stone to share ideas and push forward the advancement in understanding how distorted timing can lead to a disturbed brain and mind or vice versa. Contributors to this volume: Ryan D. Ward, Billur Avlar, Peter D Balsam, Deana B. • Brill Timing and Time Perception: Procedures, Measures, & Applications

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTiming and Time Perception: Procedures, Measures, and Applications is a one-of-a-kind, collective effort to present the most utilized and known methods on timing and time perception. Specifically, it covers methods and analysis on circadian timing, synchrony perception, reaction/response time, time estimation, and alternative methods for clinical/developmental research. The book includes experimental protocols, programming code, and sample results and the content ranges from very introductory to more advanced so as to cover the needs of both junior and senior researchers. We hope that this will be the first step in future efforts to document experimental methods and analysis both in a theoretical and in a practical manner. Contributors are: Patricia V. • Brill The Imaginary: Word and Image: L’imaginaire: texte et image

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe imaginary as a critical concept originated in the twentieth century and has been theorized in diverse ways. It can be understood as a register of thought; the way we interpret the world; the universe of images, signs, texts, and objects of thought. In this volume, it is explored as it manifests itself in encounters between the verbal and the visual. A number of the essays brought together here explore the transposition of the imaginary in illustrations of texts and verbal renditions of images, as well as in comic books based on paintings or on verbal narratives. Others analyze ways in which books deal with film or television and investigate the imaginary in digital media. Special attention is paid to the imaginary of places and the relationship of the imaginary with memory. Written in English and French, these contributions by European and American scholars demonstrate the various concerns and approaches characteristic of contemporary scholarship in word and image studies.Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION SUMMARIES RÉSUMÉS TRANSPOSITIONS OF THE IMAGINARY IN WORD AND IMAGE: ILLUSTRATIONS TRANSPOSITIONS DE L’IMAGINAIRE EN TEXTE ET IMAGE: ILLUSTRATIONS Caroline Marie (Re-)Imaging the Imaginary of a Children's Story by Virginia Woolf: Nurse Lugton… through the Prism of Three Illustrators Eric T. • Brill Vestibular Cognition

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn this volume specific cognitive sub-functions are identified and indications of how basic vestibular input contributes to each are described. The broad range of these functions is consistent with the broad spread of vestibular projections throughout the cortex. Combining vestibular signals about the head’s orientation relative to gravity with information about head position relative to the body provides sufficient information to map body position onto the ground surface and underlie the sense of spatial position. But vestibular signals are also fundamental to sensorimotor control and even to high-level bodily perception such as the sense of body ownership and the anchoring of perspective to the body. Clinical observations confirm the essential role of vestibular signals in maintaining a coherent self-representation and suggest some novel rehabilitation strategies. The chapters presented in this volume are previously published in a Special Issue of Multisensory Research, Volume 28, Issue 5-6 (2015). Contributors are: M. Barnett-Cowan, O. Blanke, J. Blouin, G. This book is thus an excellent and timely step in the right direction and a helpful introduction for any scientist wanting to familiarize with this topic." • Brill Ten Lectures on Language, Culture and Mind: Cultural, Developmental and Evolutionary Perspectives in Cognitive Linguistics

Book SynopsisIn this interdisciplinary collection of lectures, Chris Sinha presents an overview of topics ranging from language in children’s play, through cultural conceptualizations of time, to philosophical and linguistic relativism. The intertwining of the evolutionary and individual time scales of human development is a key theme unifying the lectures, as is the fundamentally cultural nature of language and cognition. Familiar topics in cognitive linguistics, such as spatial semantics and conceptual blending, are addressed from these cultural, comparative and developmental perspectives. Chris Sinha also discusses the psychological roots of key concepts in cognitive linguistics, and sets out a biocultural approach to language evolution.

  • Brill Cognition in Emotion: An Investigation through Experiences with Art

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEmotions are essential for human existence, both lighting the way toward the brightest of achievements and setting the course into the darkness of suffering. Not surprisingly, then, emotion research is currently one of the hottest topics in the field of psychology. Yet to divine the nature of emotion is a complex and extensive task. In this book emotions are approached thought an exploration of the nature of cognition in emotion; the nature of thoughts in feelings. Different approaches to emotions are explored, from brain research to research at the level of experience, and it is argued that all approaches must seriously take into account the experiential dimension. A qualitative study of experiences with art is therefore presented, as emotions and cognition are often expressed in experiences with art. It is the first study of its kind. Descriptions of various affective phenomena are then given which have significant implications for contemporary debates about emotions, resolving several contemporary controversies.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction Chapter 1: Describing Emotion Chapter 2: Describing Cognition Chapter 3: Theories about the Emotion-Cognition Relationship Chapter 4: Experiences with Art Chapter 5: A Phenomenological Study of Art Appreciation Chapter 6: Discussion Bibliography Index

  • Brill Cognitive Iconology: When and How Psychology Explains Images

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCognitive Iconology is a new theory of the relation of psychology to art. Instead of being an application of psychological principles, it is a methodologically aware account of psychology, art and the nature of explanation. Rather than fight over biology or culture, it shows how they must fit together. The term “cognitive iconology” is meant to mirror other disciplines like cognitive poetics and musicology but the fear that images must be somehow transparent to understanding is calmed by the stratified approach to explanation that is outlined. In the book, cognitive iconology is a theory of cognitive tendencies that contribute to but are not determinative of an artistic meaning. At the center of the book are three case studies: images depicted within images, basic corrections to architectural renderings in images, and murals and paintings seen from the side. In all cases, there is a primitive perceptual pull that contribute to but do not override larger cultural meaning. The book then moves beyond the confines of the image to behavior around the image, and then ends with the concluding question of why some images are harder to understand than others. Cognitive Iconology promises to be important because it moves beyond the turf battles typically fought in image studies. It argues for a sustainable practice of interpretation that can live with other disciplines.Table of ContentsPreface Introduction: Toward a Cognitive Iconology Chapter 1: Cognitive Iconology: Understanding versus Explanation Chapter 2: Fiction and Transcription: Two Ecologies of Perception Chapter 3: A Classification of Perspective “Corrections” in Images Chapter 4: Presence over Perspective: Portraits-in-Pictures Chapter 5: Oblique Images from the Side and Below Chapter 6: Acting Irrational around Art Conclusion: Cognitive Proclivities for the Study of Art Bibliography Index
