Taylor & Francis Ltd Personality Assessment Paradigms and Methods
Book SynopsisThis book is an update of Paradigms of Personality Assessment by Jerry Wiggins (2003, Guilford), a landmark volume in the personality assessment literature. The first half of Wiggins (2003) described five major paradigms: psychodynamic (as exemplified by the Rorschach and TAT), narrative (interview data), interpersonal (circumplex instruments), multivariate (five-factor instruments), and empirical (MMPI). In the second half of the book, expert representatives of each paradigm interpreted test data from the same patient, Madeline. In this follow-up, personality experts describe innovations in each of the major paradigms articulated by Wiggins since the time of his book, including the advancement of therapeutic assessment, validation of the Rorschach Performance Assessment System, development of a multimethod battery for integrated interpersonal assessment, publication of the Restructured Form of the MMPI-2, and integration of multivariate Five-Factor Model instruments wTrade Review"This remarkable sequel to Wiggins’ (2003) multimethod case study extends the Madeline G. story over a 20-year period in a manner that is edifying and compelling. With a new set of expert collaborators employing updated tests and advances in assessment paradigms, Hopwood and Waugh’s text delivers vital applied learning, illustrating the power of a longitudinal frame of personality assessment that reveals trait consistency, age-related drifts, and new adaptations. It is ultimately person-centered and empathic. This is an essential read for personality assessors and therapists alike."Radhika Krishnamurthy, Psy.D., ABAP, Clinical Psychology Professor, Florida Institute of Technology'Drs. Hopwood and Waugh have assembled a remarkable revisiting of the classic 2003 work by Wiggins, viewing the contemporary status of the original case of Madeline through the lens of different paradigms of personality assessment. Providing both continuity with the original as well as insight into advances in recent years, this volume is an assessment tour de force that should be required reading for anyone wishing to understand of the state of the art in the field.'Leslie C. Morey, Ph.D., George T. and Gladys H. Abell Professor of Psychology, Texas A&M University"Personality Assessment Paradigms and Methods: A Collaborative Reassessment of Madeline G, edited by luminaries Christopher Hopwood and Mark Waugh, demonstrates the power of personality assessment to reveal the inner workings of a person with a depth that is almost startling. This book presents a mosaic of carefully hewn pieces, perspectives yielded from the application of five paradigms for examining psychological assessment data, which, when melded together reveal Madeline in her uniqueness and complexity. I cannot imagine a more captivating way for students to learn about psychological assessment or for more senior assessors to expand their interpretive repertoires. With chapters written by of roster of our most distinguished, talented personality assessors Madeline G. 2.0 is a triumph."Virginia Brabender, PhD, ABPP (cl), Distinguished University Professor (2017-2020), Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, Widener University"Destined to become a classic in 21st century personality assessment, Hopwood and Waugh’s Personality Assessment Paradigms and Methods should be on every clinician’s bookshelf. With chapters written by luminaries in our field, this volume blends clinical wisdom with rigorous empirical evidence to illuminate the nuances of human behavior and mental life. Students and seasoned professionals like will benefit from this incisive, engaging book."Robert F. Bornstein, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Adelphi University"With the reassessment of Madeline G almost two decades later, this book re-invigorates Wiggins’ seminal text on personality assessment. It provides an updated, comprehensive overview of how different personality assessment paradigms answer three important questions: "What is personality?" "How do we measure it?" and "What should we measure?" The captivating Madeline G brings each paradigm to life. This is a must-read for practitioners and trainees and belongs on the syllabus of every course for the next generation of personality assessors."Nicole M. Book SynopsisThe Growth of Mind is the product of a series of ten lectures by Neville Symington. It offers an understanding of the mind and its capacity to discover truth, establishing this as the foundation stone for our judgment and critique of the human world. Although the book's field of exploration lies in psychological processes met in the consulting-room, grounded in the general principles of psycho-analysis, the book's mode of enquiry is to elucidate a knowledge of individual people.Exploring the mind's active role in understanding, the book suggests that the act of understanding has a transformative function, and that to be a person is to be a part of a community. It suggests that the super-ego is a sign of some undeveloped function within the personality. If the ego and all its functions are fully evolved, then the super-ego will only be minimally present in the personality. Book SynopsisThe question of whether someone is psychologically healthy or mentally ill, and the fundamental nature of mental health underlying that question has been debated in cultural, academic, and clinical settings for millennia. At each point, it focuses on major elements that emerged regarding how people judged sanity and insanity and places major emphasis on the growing fields of psychiatry and psychology as they emerged and developed. It takes the concepts of metacognition and mentalization out of the lab and into actual clinical practice. Further, what I especially appreciate is that it puts the humanity and essence of being a person into the treatment of psychosis and conceptualizes recovery as more than remission of symptoms. A central message is that therapeutic interventions for psychosis must go beyond mere symptom reduction. Instead, the bottom line is to achieve recovery by fostering patients’ sense of agency, self-reflectivity, and by re-integrating their fragmented intersubjective experience. Taylor & Francis Ltd Dark Matters: Exploring the Realm of Psychic
Book SynopsisThis book takes a deeper look into the darker side of the human condition by examining the psyches of those who have been victims or survivors of heinous acts perpetrated by others. From the "personal Holocaust" of sexual abuse in the family, to the genocidal persecution during "the" Holocaust, and from the shared national horror of September 11 to the Palestinian/Israeli situation, a special model of the traumatized mind is evolved to further our understanding of such "dark matters".The traditional models of the mind fall short when dealing with extraordinary people under ordinary conditions as well as with ordinary people under extraordinary conditions. This metapsychology is organized around the defensive operations of repression or splitting. In the model proposed here, defensive altered states of consciousness, or dissociation seems more helpful. A historical perspective is offered, from Freud and Breuer, with their Studies on Hysteria, to current thinking about dissociative disorders. A developmental line of dissociation is also explored. Extensive case material is presented to illustrate the theoretical as well as technical challenges of working with the lapses of memory, unbearable affects, and countertransference demands upon the clinician.Trade Review'Dark Matters is a profound and provocative study of dissociation and trauma at the historical and societal/cultural, as well as personal, levels. Richly illustrated through detailed clinical presentations and case discussions, it recounts the treatments of patients who suffer from a wide range of dissociative phenomena, including the still-controversial Dissociative Identity Disorder. This allows readers to share in the insights and experience of an experienced clinician and theoretician, whose deeply psychoanalytic consciousness combines with passion, compassion, and creativity in an attempt to illuminate the darkest recesses of the human psyche.'- Howard B. Levine, MD, is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Institute of New England, East (PINE), the editorial boards of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Inquiry, and the Board of Directors of the International Psychoanalytical Association'After Freud turned away from the study of dissociation to repression, this concept was lost for a long time in psychoanalysis, and the resulting conceptual lacunae couldn't really be filled by other concepts like "splitting". Therefore, dissociation and its vicissitudes remained a dark matter in psychoanalysis. Since some time related to the renewed discourse on trauma, the interest in dissociative phenomena is increasing. One of the main exponents of this development is Ira Brenner. For decades, he has treated patients suffering from severe dissociative disorders. With his extraordinary knowledge and deep understanding, Brenner presents a comprehensive theory of dissociation not only for traumatised individuals, but also for traumatised societies. In patients with severe Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), the traumatic shock results not only in disruptions of perception, memory, and consciousness, but also in alter personalities encapsulating disowned traumatic memories. At the centre of Brenner's book are case reports of the psychoanalytic treatment of these patients who have endured overwhelmingly cruel and life-threatening treatment in childhood. Brenner is a masterful clinician, giving us the opportunity to learn how to treat patients with severe dissociative disorders. He describes his treatment technique in detail, in particular for critical situations, which are common in the treatment of these patients. Dark Matters is a major advance in the theory and clinical practice of dissociation and its disorders.'- Werner Bohleber, PhD, psychoanalyst, editor of the journal Psyche, and author of Destructiveness, Intersubjectivity, and Trauma'Dark Matters is a dark book, yet it sheds welcome light on the most obscure and disturbing areas of human experience. To timeless questions about evil and suffering, Ira Brenner brings wisdom that represents the mastery of a vast clinical and empirical literature and decades of sensitive work with survivors of extreme trauma. Through a lens that illuminates dissociative processes, Brenner considers not only complex therapeutic questions, but also the psychological causes and consequences of the Holocaust, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the attacks of September 11, 2001. This book belongs in the offices of all therapists who work with our most shattered patients and in the library of anyone trying to understand the most perverse and destructive aspects of the human condition.'- Nancy McWilliams, PhD, ABPP, Rutgers Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology, and author of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical ProcessTable of ContentsIntroduction , Prologue , Why dark matter? , Conceptual Realm , Splitting of the ego , On dissociation , Seeing and not seeing , Societal Realm , Intergenerational transmission , Playing and survival , Geopolitical identity disorder , Post-9/11 world , Technical Realm , Interpretation or containment? , Handling the compulsion to repeat , Psychoactive therapy , Epilogue , From Darkness to light

Taylor & Francis Ltd From Id to Intersubjectivity: Talking about the
Book SynopsisPsychoanalysis has moved a long way from the techniques of classical psychoanalysis but these changes have not been understood or disseminated to the wider community. Even university scholars and students of psychology have an archetypal view of the original form of psychoanalysis and do not appreciate that major changes have occurred. This book commences with a detailed outline of the origins of psychoanalysis and an explanation of key terms, which are often misinterpreted. The second chapter examines the changes that have occurred in theorising and practice over the past 120 years and explores key developments. The following chapters contain an interview with a practitioner working in one of each of the four major branches of modern psychoanalysis - object relations, attachment informed psychotherapy, intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy, and relational and intersubjective theory. There follows textual, content, conceptual, and thematic analyses of the transcripts of interviews and commentaries on a therapy excerpt exploring commonalities and differences among these theoretical approaches. The book closes with a consideration of how these differences translate into clinical practice. This book aims to appeal to a wide audience, including clinical practitioners, students of psychology and psychotherapy, the informed lay public, and those thinking about commencing an analysis.Table of ContentsForeword , , Where the talking began: the birth of psychoanalysis , Beyond Freud’s psychoanalysis , Dr Ron Spielman: object relations psychoanalysis , Professor Jeremy Holmes: attachment-informed psychotherapy , Dr Robert D. Taylor & Francis Ltd Becoming Parents and Overcoming Obstacles:
Book SynopsisThere are many books that deal with pregnancy and maternity, and a large number of magazines and articles on paediatric nursing that examine these subjects from different points of view. This volume is not a manual and is not intended to explain to future parents what to do and what to avoid. The objective is rather to look at the most significant and problematic aspects of this delicate phase of a woman's life and that of a couple. It seeks to offer a key to understand the deep significance and complexity of the path to follow to become parents and to face fears linked to the difficulty of procreation, using the tools of observation and psychoanalytic listening. Reviewing several experiences of clinical work, the authors offer reflections on the personal experiences of women and couples and the difficulties which can be met when the desire for a child is disappointed. A maternity and parenting project can be frustrated by miscarriages and encounter the fear of infertility. How are the problems of sterility or spontaneous abortion experienced? Taylor & Francis Ltd A New Body-Mind Approach: Clinical Cases
Book SynopsisIntegrative psychosomatics is a new approach to explaining illnesses and how patients relate to their problems. This new discipline draws on psychoanalysis, medicine and the neurosciences, rather than solely on psychoanalysis, which has inspired all the psychosomatic approaches until now. Amongst the fascinating and compelling questions that this book raises are: how can we understand an illness if we only analyse the psyche? How can we understand patients if we only take account of their biological data? Are hypochondriac problems generated by the mind, as some doctors believe, or are the problems in fact more complex? The author also considers whether traditional psychoanalysis and medicine might actually distance practitioners from an understanding of patients and illnesses. For integrative psychosomatics, the psyche or the mind can play either a greater or lesser role in illness: advances in research in the neurosciences and biology over the last twenty years have uncovered many biological and genetic processes involved in the relations between the central nervous system and the other systems that constitute the human psychosomatic entity. Consequently, we can now understand illnesses much better and care for patients with regard to how they relate to their illnesses.Table of ContentsPreface , Foreword , Foreword , Introduction , Marie-Laure and metabolic syndrome: relations between the psychic apparatus and the hypothalamic axis , Chloé: repairing the psychic apparatus—neuronal tumour, neuropsychoanalysis, or neuropsychosomatics? , Claude: “The Little Prince’s heartache” , A hypochondriac patient—the enigma of Damien’s somatic problems , Lucien: type 2 diabetic; the patient’s cultural dimension, denial of illness and narcissistic problematic , Alicia: “when I’ve had the transplant, will I feel better?” , The heart problems of a “famous patient” , Conclusion

Taylor & Francis Ltd Into the Darkest Places: Early Relational Trauma
Book SynopsisThis book explores the roots of borderline states of mind in early relational trauma and shows how it is possible, and necessary, to visit 'the darkest places' in order to work through these traumas. This is despite the fact that re-experiencing such traumas is unbearable for the patient and they naturally want to enlist the analyst in ensuring that they will never be experienced again. This is the backdrop for the extreme pressures and roles that are constellated in the analysis that can lead to impasse or breakdown of the analytic relationship. The author explores how these areas can be negotiated safely and that, whilst drawing heavily on recent developments in attachment, relational, trauma and infant development theory, an analytic attitude needs to be maintained in order to integrate these experiences and allow the individual to feel, finally, accepted and whole. The book builds on Freud's views of repetition compulsion and re-enactment and develops Jung's concept of the traumatic complex. It offers, in simple language, a contemporary integration of traditional and new theoretical paradigms and an innovative approach to this oldest and most intractable of psychoanalytic issues.Trade Review'Those of us working in the field of extreme abuse and trauma have slowly become aware of the paradigm shift such work demands. Different concepts or diagnoses of mental illness become less satisfactory when looked at through a trauma and relational lens. Coming from a Jungian base, Marcus West masterfully explores Jungian, Freudian, Kleinian and Winnicottian theories, as well as American object relations and current international trauma theory, both biological and clinical, in a compelling and respectful way. He uses the myth of Orpheus most beautifully to show how it is the affective response of the analyst that is needed to enter the darkest places, and in doing so he sheds emotional and academic light.'- Valerie Sinason, editor of Trauma, Dissociation and Multiplicity: Working on Identity and Selves'Marcus West has written a book of profound insight into the internal workings of trauma within the psyche and its impact on all interpersonal relationships. This is a book that should be read by every psychotherapist who works with people suffering from early traumatic wounding to the self. It is a book thoroughly grounded in Jungian theory and importantly advances its practical applications.'- Murray Stein, author of Soul: Treatment and Recovery'To shine a much-needed light on analytic practice with borderline states of mind, Marcus West comprehensively brings together neuroscience, infant research and trauma theory along with Jungian and psychoanalytic perspectives. He gives us a critique of salient historical ideas and methods as a launch pad for his own creative understanding and work with those suffering early relational trauma, known as "hidden" trauma. West is a skilful and talented analyst who has bravely sifted through the literature and developed his own in-depth approach grounded in his many years in the trenches.'- Linda Carter, former US editor-in-chief of the Journal of Analytical Psychology'In this impressive and scholarly book, Marcus West offers a thoughtful reappraisal and integration of analytic theory, trauma theory, and relational theory. West draws on a wide range of research to argue that Jung's concept of the complex is central to understanding trauma, in that it embodies both trauma-related internal working models, primitive responses to the trauma, and narcissistic defences. West suggests that the analytic relationship is the essential site for the reconstruction of early relational traumas, which are repeatedly experienced between analyst and patient in direct and reversed forms, and that the analytic attitude offers the best opportunity for the traumatic complex to be worked through and integrated.'- Dr Jean Knox, Associate Professor, Clinical and Doctorate Programme, University of ExeterTable of ContentsChapter One: Early relational trauma and borderline states of mind; Chapter Two: The clinical picture and the traditional psychoanalytic understandings of borderline phenomena; Chapter Three: A brief outline of trauma theory; Chapter Four: The relational and attachment perspective; Chapter Five: Trauma, complex, and narcissistic defences of the core self—from fight and flight to personality organisation; Chapter Six: Internal working models on different levels and in direct and reversed forms; Chapter Seven: Into the darkest places: microanalysis of the analytic relationship—intersubjectivity, co-construction, and re-enactment; Chapter Eight: Broad and flexible ego-functioning and the core self—the ego–self axis and ps–dp; Chapter Nine: Idealisation and the longing for paradise—relinquishing the wish for an idealised, conflict-free relationship; Chapter Ten: Bringing it all together—an extended clinical example; Chapter Eleven: The pressures on the analyst—being human and bearing to be inhuman; Chapter Twelve: The analyst’s journey and the defeat of the analyst’s ego—Orpheus and Eurydice and the journey through the underworld; Chapter Thirteen: Trauma and the analytic attitude; Chapter Fourteen: When the earth swallows you up—shame, regression, and the collapse response; Chapter Fifteen: In thrall to the spectre of death—suicidality, submission, and collapse; Chapter Sixteen: Dissociation and dissociative identity disorder; Chapter Seventeen: The body remembers—working analytically with the body; Chapter Eighteen: Jung’s early relational trauma and spiritual experience; Chapter Nineteen: Summary and conclusion—emerging from trauma and returning to everyday life

Taylor & Francis Ltd Unrepressed Unconscious, Implicit Memory, and Clinical Work
Book SynopsisUnrepressed Unconscious, Implicit Memory, and Clinical Work analyses the psychological and neurobiological characteristics of what nowadays goes under the name of "unrepressed unconscious", as opposed to Freud's earlier version of a kind of "repressed unconscious" encountered and described initially in his work with hysterical patients. Pioneering Italian psychoanalyst and neuroscientist Mauro Mancia has distinguished this seminal Freudian concept from an earlier version of the unconscious (preverbal and pre-symbolic) that he terms "unrepressed", and which he describes as "having its foundations in the sensory experiences the infant has with his mother (including hearing her voice, which recalls prosodic experiences in the womb). In connection with this description of two different kinds of unconscious, a 'double' system of memory has been identified: if a traumatic event or series of events takes place when the nervous system is not ready to encode them linguistically and register them within the declarative memory system, they leave a trace within the implicit memory and particularly within the right brain, which both Mancia and Schore see as the seat of implicit memory and of that kind of unconscious that is not available for recollection but has not been properly repressed either (therefore "unrepressed").Trade Review'A book dedicated to the "unrepressed unconscious" is a long-awaited contribution to psychodynamic theory and practice. It makes us address questions to which we cannot, and probably we should not, give final answers. How does the clinician move between the unconscious of neuroscience and the unconscious of psychoanalysis? What is the role of implicit memory in normal and pathological functioning? How are our ideas of different kinds of unconscious affected by our understanding trauma, dissociation, attachment, and implicit relational knowledge? Giuseppe Craparo and Clara Mucci have edited a thought-provoking book wherein the major scholars of the field are called to share their different perspectives, keeping us suspended between the longing for answers and the desire for new questions.'-Vittorio Lingiardi, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy'The notion of the unrepressed unconscious has been a major psychoanalytic puzzle since the inception of the discipline. Psychoanalytic thinking about the nature of consciousness has always implicitly distinguished between a non-conscious and a dynamically unconscious mental content, whether marked by distinctions such as repressed vs. unrepressed, preconscious vs. unconscious or, using Sandler's three-box model, past vs. present unconscious. This excellent book attempts to map this somewhat controversial field and addresses the dichotomy from six distinct perspectives that share the wish to integrate contemporary neuroscience with psychoanalytic perspectives, using the clinical setting as the primary constraint on theory-building.'-Peter Fonagy, Freud Memorial Professor of Psychoanalysis, University College London; from the Foreword

Taylor & Francis Ltd Asperger's Children: Psychodynamics, Aetiology,
Book SynopsisThe DSM-5 (2013) classifies all autism-related disorders, including Asperger's, under the heading "autism spectrum disorder." This book argues that this lumping together is unhelpful for clinicians. Instead, finer diagnostic distinctions are helpful to clinicians who treat children with Asperger's.This book spells out in detail the psychodynamics the author has repeatedly uncovered in Asperger's children, adolescents, and adults, and explores the central factors in the aetiology of Asperger's Disorder. There is a section suggesting how Asperger's can be adequately diagnosed from "the outside" (using external descriptive features) and more importantly from "the inside" (based on internal psychodynamic processes). Finally, there is a section outlining psychodynamic treatment approaches to Asperger's children, based on their psychodynamics and on which type of Asperger's is present. The book includes numerous case illustrations to help the reader appreciate the central psychodynamics that are regularly observed in Asperger's children, namely splitting of the self into victim and bully aspects, and projective identification into remote objects. On the basis of their psychodynamics, and especially which aspect of their split self is predominant, three different types of Asperger's are outlined which require different treatment approaches.Trade Review'This enlightening book offers the reader valuable understanding of children, adolescents, and young adults who suffer from Asperger's Disorder. Robin Holloway demonstrates his psychoanalytic psychotherapy skills through extensive clinical material showing how all of his child and adolescent patients share a deep need for insightful and sensitive help. He makes a convincing argument that Asperger's Disorder should remain a valid diagnosis and provides data to demonstrate its usefulness. Every clinician who works with children, adolescents, and adults who suffer from Asperger's Disorder should read this comprehensive volume that begins with the history of Asperger's and ends with help in treating those with Asperger's. This remarkable book is a much needed and welcome addition to the literature.'- Ann G. Smolen, PhD, author of Mothering Without a Home: Attachment Representations and Behaviors of Homeless Mothers and Children, and Six Children: The Spectrum of Child Psychopathology and its Treatment'Dr Holloway has written an extremely well researched and informative book on Asperger's children. It is very clearly written and full of wonderful clinical illustrations of the author's sensitive and creative work with these young people. He thoroughly covers a wide range of topics including diagnosis, psychodynamics and the difficulties the psychotherapist encounters with these patients. His discussion about the relative factors of neurological, traumatic and object relational features of Asperger's syndrome should be extremely helpful to the practicing clinician, whether one is new or experienced in therapeutic work with these individuals.'- Lawrence J. Brown, PhD, Supervising Child Analyst, Boston Psychoanalytic Institute; author of Intersubjective Processes and the Unconscious: Freudian, Kleinian and Bionian Perspectives'This is a very important book. Taylor & Francis Ltd Managing High Risk Sex Offenders in the
Book SynopsisSex offenders, and in particular paedophiles, have been the subject of much political and media attention, producing intensive debates about the best way of dealing with them. This book explores these issues, evaluating the measures in use or being considered, including drug treatment, MAPPA, the use of the Sex Offender Register, restorative justice techniques, and treatment programmes. It is concerned with high-risk sex offenders both when they are sentenced to a community order, and also when they are released back into the community after a custodial sentence. The introductory section opens with a discussion on how terms such as paedophilia are constructed and viewed, and then looks at how government policy regarding sex offending has developed over recent years. Section two looks at issues concerned with risk management, questioning whether enough is being done to monitor the risk that high-risk offenders pose when released into society; whilst section three, on risk reduction covers the main methods of treatment, including sex offender treatment programmes, pharmacotherapy (chemical castration) and restorative and reintegration techniques. Section Four focuses on specific offender groups; including female sexual offenders, sexual harm by youth, mentally disordered sexual offenders and intellectual disabled offenders. These assess in what ways these offenders are different to the 'norm' and look at how we should be dealing and treating these differences. The final section looks at social and moral responsibilities, including the patterns, prevention and protection of cyber-sex offences and media constructions of and reactions to paedophilia. In the final chapter the concept of dignity is addressed and the balance between community protection and the rights of sex offenders involved is evaluated.Trade Review'Karen Harrison, the editor, closes the preface with this comment: "whether he overall aim (to identify methods to prevent further sexual victimization) has been achieved is for the reader to assess". According to this humble reader, this aim is fully achieved if, and only if, professionals consider the conclusions reached by the authors. This is an extraordinary book that truly opens the eyes. All professionals wanting to really understand paedophilia should consider this book compulsory reading. It not only includes difficult theoretical questions but also raises practical challenges which must be taken into consideration when researching and in practice.' – Olga Sanchez De Ribera, PhD Student, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge in the Howard Journal Vol 49 No 5. Taylor & Francis Ltd Vulnerability to Psychosis: From Neurosciences to
Book SynopsisEarly clinical intervention in psychosis is now a major objective of mental health services and the development of specialist intervention services has greatly facilitated research on the early phases of this disorder. In this book, contributors provide a review of the neurobiological research in people at high risk of psychosis, focusing on the transition from being at a high risk state to their first episode. Contributors consider unaffected family members and twin studies as well as the individual’s data before and after the onset of the illness. The environmental factors that contribute to a psychotic episode are also examined.Vulnerability to Psychosis presents neurobiological findings in the context of what is now known about the psychopathology and cognitive impairments that are evident in people at high risk of psychosis. It will be essential reading for clinicians working with this client group, and will interest academics looking for state of the art information in this field.Table of ContentsBorgwardt, Fusar-Poli, McGuire, Introduction. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Psychotic Core
Book SynopsisUnderstanding the psychodynamics of madness is essential to the therapy of most patients, including those who are not diagnosed as mad in the literal sense. This volume draws on Freud, Jung, recent object relation and self psychologies, and, particularly, the work of Winnicott, Bion and Elkin. It describes and critiques the basic ideas on the dynamics of psychoses and provides a framework for interpretation.Trade Review'This book is a rich phenomenological and psychodynamic exploration of "the mad dimension of life", a discussion which has both breadth and depth. Eigen must certainly rank amongst the foremost of contemporary analytic therapists and theorists who are making significant steps in furthering our understanding of madness. Any clinician who has ever attempted to understand the thoughts and experiences of psychotic patients will find much that is illuminating and well described in this book.'- Phil Mollon in British Journal of Psychiatry'An extraordinary book. Reading The Psychotic Core not only becomes an excursion through the (universal) elements of psychosis, but evolves into an encounter with the psychotic process itself. Eigen is, however, fundamentally a psychoanalyst in his approach and method, and his analytic view constitutes both a framework for interpretation and a mode of knowing. By listening to psychosis, by understanding its presence, by looking at (and interpreting) its symbolizations, we enhance our knowledge of what it means to live in a historical project that finds itself affected by periodic eruptions of a cultural and political madness.'- James M. Glass in The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease'The Psychotic Core is one of the finest treatises I have ever read on the subject. It is solidly clinical and pragmatic on one hand, and yet it is a piece of exquisite, artistic phenomenology on the other. Eigen's concept of madness elegantly spans what we ordinarily mean by borderline states as well as the formal psychotic states. The work is a very creatively integrative one. The pigments on his palette include Freud, Jung, Bion, Winnicott, and many others.'- James Grotstein in Psychotherapy & Social Science ReviewTable of ContentsPreface -- The Core of Psychosis -- Hallucination -- Mindlessness -- Boundaries -- Hate -- Epistemology and Reversal -- Schreber and Rena -- The Psychotic Self -- Epilogue

Taylor & Francis Ltd From the Brink: Experiences of the Void from a Depth Psychology Perspective
Book SynopsisA commonly encountered experience of both analyst and analysand is that of the void. It is spoken about at different stages of therapy and refers to experiences that have different origins. Sometimes the experience of the void is around a relatively limited aspect of the psyche but at other times the void seems much more global and threatens to engulf the entire personality; the whole individual psyche then seems threatened by the possibility of dissolution into nothingness. The void experience may result from the early failure of external objects to meet the needs of the developing ego, which leads to the sorts of primitive terrors that Winnicott described, or it may result when the Self itself seems threatened with annihilation, which may be more to do with a rupturing of the ego-Self axis. In the first case the fear is of disintegration, whereas in the second the experience is one of the living dead, as though the individual is cut off from her life source. But more than that, the intrusion of the void into the conscious experience of so many of us implies that its occurrence is not only the result of severe trauma but also a necessary aspect of the individuation process.Drawing on the writings of Jung and post-Jungians, and Psychoanalytic thinkers such as Bion, Winnicott and Bick, as well as on poetry, mythology and art, and illustrating these ideas with dreams and other material drawn from his practice, the author here attempts to illuminate some of the compartments of that immense space.Trade Review'Paul Ashton's work on the Void is a first and profound effort to make conscious the void, emptiness, or nothing, that precedes all conscious image and form as their originary source. His approach is Jungian but in it he relates the experience of the void to mystical experience and to dimensions of the psyche to which Jung points in his appreciation of apophatic mystics, but which he never formally elaborates in his corpus. Ashton's work points to a dimension of psyche which precedes the archetypal into which the ego dies in cyclical and never ending processes of bringing its wealth to conscious birth as the foundational task of historical humanity, individual and collective.' - John Dourley, Jungian Analyst, Author and Theologian, Ottawa, Canada 'Paul Ashton's exploration of the human experience of the Nothing is a courageous undertaking. The Brink of the Void is encountered not only in response to primitive terror or severe trauma, but also as an almost inevitable aspect of the refining fire of the Individuation process. Ashton is informed about this experience by a broad canvas drawn from mythology, literature, art, music, religion, spirituality and film. He has found words and images for that mute state of existential abandonment. His clinical experience and wisdom are apparent.' - Joy Jobson, Jungian Analyst and Clinical Social Worker, Cape Town 'It is very good, and an interesting topic that is not often written about. .... [the] scope of the book is very broad. He [Paul Ashton] exemplifies the best Jungian thought that is both clinically grounded and also has a mythological and imaginal sensibility.'- Spring Journal and Books, New OrleansTable of ContentsContents1 On the territory of the void2 A walk on the wild side: connecting "the void" with people3 Primary or secondary?4 Psychotherapy and spirituality5 Empty oneself6 The void in psychogenic autism7 Another "black hole"8 Memory within the Borderline condition9 Trauma as void experience10 Myths and legends of creation11 Dimitri's void12 The king's sacrifice13 The "Birthday Present"14 The dark night of the soul15 Aspects in the treatment of void states16 Connections, walls and windows17 On active imagination18 Void as a gender experience: Part 1: Mostly masculine 19 Void as a gender experience: Part 2: Female encounters

Taylor & Francis Ltd On Being Normal and Other Disorders: A Manual for
Book SynopsisThe central argument of On Being Normal and Other Disorders is that psychic identity is acquired through one's primary intersubjective relationships. Thus, the diagnosis of potential pathologies must also be founded on this relation. Given that the efficacy of all forms of treatment depends upon the therapeutic relation, a diagnostic of this sort has wide-ranging applications.Paul Verhaeghe's critical evaluation of the contemporary DSM-diagnostic shows that the lack of reference to and governing metapsychology impinges on the therapeutic value of the DSM categories. In response to this problem, the author sketches out the foundations of such a metapsychology by combining a Freudo-Lacanian approach with contemporary empirical research. Close attention is paid to the processes of identity acquisition to show how the self and the Other are not two separate entities. Rather, subject formation is seen as a process in which both the subject's and the Other's identity, as well as the relationship between them, comes into being. By engaging this new theoretical approach in a constant dialogue with the findings of contemporary research, this book provides a compass for the practical applications of such a differential diagnostic. Post-modern categories of anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorders are approached both through the well-known neurotic, psychotic, and perverse structures, as well as through the less familiar distinction between an actual pathology and a psychopathology. These two outlooks, which involve the role of language and the subject's relation to the Other, are spelled out to show their implications for treatment at every turn.Trade Review'A major achievement from a major scholar...This book is an outstanding review of the highest quality of Lacanian thinking.'- Peter Fonagy, University of London.'Verhaeghe creates pathways through the contested field of contemporary clinical diagnosis. Cambridge University Press A Clinicians Handbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Book SynopsisThis authoritative 2006 clinical handbook provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of the main disorders encountered by child and adolescent psychiatrists. Coverage is based on ICD-10 and DSM-IV classifications. Emphasis is on good clinical practice and quality of patient care and appendices include documents for assessment of intervention planning and evaluation.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'This substantial textbook, edited by well-known academics and clinicians, certainly provides a comprehensive guide to all the common disorders that clinicians working within child and adolescent mental health services are likely to encounter … I have enjoyed reading it and will undoubtedly use it. It is also a good resource for teaching medical students about the neurobiology underpinning schizophrenia or for an overview of the prodrome.' British Journal of PsychiatryReview of the hardback: '… [I] have enjoyed this book. It is clear that the ethos of the authors is multidisciplinary and inclusive of parents, carers, schools and social care in the management of children and adolescents with disorders … I felt I could translate what the author was describing into my daily clinical experience … The tables and diagrams are ideal for the busy clinician, they are clear and informative … I think this speaks for the utility of the book, as it is intended to be a synthesis, a 'desk book' for clinicians, and I think it succeeds very well indeed. For this reason I strongly recommend it.' Psychological MedicineReview of the hardback: 'I was delighted to review the book.
