Nova Science Publishers Inc Advances in Health and Disease: Volume 20
Book SynopsisVolume 20 begins by exploring the clinical aspects of cryosurgery including: indications, patient selection, contraindications, technique, complications, and post-treatment follow-up. The authors review available data on current and potential agents for the treatment of vitiligo, an acquired disorder of melanin pigmentation that affects approximately 0.5-2% of the population. The available data regarding the role of oral magnesium supplementation in the treatment of prediabetes and high blood pressure is also studied. The long-term safety of intravitreal treatment with ranibizumab for age-related macular degeneration is assessed, noting rare endophthalmitis occurrences and scarce questionable systemic side effects. The inflammatory reaction that follows damage to the bronchiolar epithelium of the small conducting airways, bronchiolitis, is reviewed. Three classifications appear useful in dfining different cases of bronchiolitis: a clinical classification, a histopathological classiifcation, and a radiologic classification. New prosthetic devices for the surgical treatment of hernias are studied, consisting of a combination of biomaterials that provide mesh with the capacity for self-adhesion. The authors explore how laparoscopic cholecystectomies can be performed safely using mirror ports in patients of situs inversus, noting that extreme skill is required to identify the reversed anatomy and to overcome the problem of handedness.

TFM Publishing Ltd Managing LONG COVID Syndrome
Book SynopsisOver ten percent of people infected with the COVID virus will suffer with long COVID syndrome. Up until now, more than one million people have been affected with this syndrome in the United Kingdom alone, and the incidence worldwide is estimated to be more than 35 million people, although this may be the tip of the iceberg. The World Health Organization has highlighted a need for the three Rs -- Recognition, Research and Rehabilitation. Long COVID syndrome can be frustrating and disabling, even many months or years after the infection; sufferers complain of fatigue, pain, post-exertional malaise, cognitive dysfunction and many other systemic symptoms. It can be challenging for healthcare professionals to recognise the disease and for patients who are suffering from the condition it can have a wide and far-reaching impact on their lives and day-to-day activities. Being a relatively new condition, many healthcare professionals, now more than ever, need to have the requisite knowledge to recognise and manage this severely debilitating disease. This book will be useful to all frontline healthcare professionals to help diagnose, manage and direct patients to the available resources. General practitioners, physiotherapists, pain therapists, nurses, surgeons, physicians, junior doctors, psychologists, medical students and other clinicians will be able to update their knowledge on long COVID syndrome with this easy-to-read book. Patients will also find the book useful to understand the basis of the disease and how they can seek help. This comprehensive treatise covers a wide variety of topics on long COVID syndrome including the aetiopathogenesis, recognition, systemic involvement, investigations, guidelines on management, available resources, systemic management and pain/fatigue management. This book will be handy for candidates preparing for various examinations conducted by the Royal College of General Practitioners, UK (MRCGP), Royal College of Anaesthetists, UK (FRCA), Faculty of Pain Medicine, UK (FFPMRCA), College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (FCAI), European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EDAIC), Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA), World Institute of Pain (FIPP/CIPS), National Board of Examinations of India (Dip NB), and the American and Canadian board examinations, as well as other examinations conducted by medical boards across the globe. Oxford University Press Social Neuroscience
Book SynopsisThe field of social cognitive neuroscience has captured the attention of many researchers during the past ten years. Much of the impetus for this new field came from the development of functional neuroimaging methods that made it possible to unobtrusively measure brain activation over time. Using these methods over the last 30 years has allowed psychologists to move from simple validation questions -- would flashing stimuli activate the visual cortex -- to those about the functional specialization of brain regions-- are there regions in the inferior temporal cortex dedicated to face processing-- to questions that, just a decade ago, would have been considered to be intractable at such a level of analysis. These so-called intractable questions are the focus of the chapters in this book, which introduces social cognitive neuroscience research addressing questions of fundamental importance to social psychology: How do we understand and represent other people? How do we represent social grTrade ReviewTodorov, Fiske and Prentice have assembled the leading figures of the nascent field of social neuroscience in a volume that is rich with ideas and the data to support them. Using data from brain lesions, EEG, and fMRI, the authors consider how brain systems are organized to support social behavior. The text considers brain systems involved in issues such as racism and dehumanized perception, the distinction between thinking about the self and about others, self-regulation and the symbolic processing of affect, emotional decision making, the components of trustworthiness in face perception, and the fate of the soul. This book is very accessible and will appeal to a broad audience that includes scientists within related fields of psychology and neuroscience, but also non-experts who are interested in how social behavior is organized in the brain. --Gregory McCarthy, Professor of Psychology, Yale University "Social Neuroscience has revolutionized how people think about social behavior. In a collection of compelling rigorous essays, the leading experts lay out the foundations of this exciting new field. This is the cutting edge of science." --Shelley E. Taylor, Distinguished Professor, Department of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles "Social Neuroscience provides an up-to-date survey of key themes and findings, focusing on cognitive neuroscience studies in humans. Contributions from many of the major players in the field cover topics ranging from face perception, to stereotyping and bias, to regulation, decision-making and moral judgment. Especially valuable are brief synthetic commentaries at the end of each section. The volume will be an accessible introduction for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, and a valuable reference source for all investigating human social cognition. Importantly, the contributions all convey the excitement of the field and point to future studies, fuel for motivating the next generation of young scientists in social neuroscience." --Ralph Adolphs, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, California Institute of Technology "Social Neuroscience: Toward Understanding the Underpinnings of the Social Mind is an informative and valuable resource for a diverse audience and various professional fields- including social psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, medicine, political science, economics, and philosophy- as well as for laymen with an ardent interest in biophilosophical inquiry." -- Sigmund Hough, PhD, ABPP, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School; Maggi Budd, PhD, MPH, ABPP, Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School; PsychCRITIQUESTable of ContentsIntroduction - A. Oxford University Press, USA Just Enough Physiology
Book SynopsisJust Enough Physiology takes the reader on a guided tour of cardiopulmonary physiology. You''ll discover how the heart, lungs, and circulation work in extreme environments so that you''re better equipped to understand how they function-or malfunction-at the bedside, in the operating room, or in the intensive care unit. Just Enough Physiology also shows the field through the eyes of some of its most colorful pioneers. While the stories are fascinating in their own right, they also reinforce the foundational principles of physiology and reveal how those discoveries were made-sometimes at great risk, and often against stiff resistance. Written as bite-sized topics, Just Enough Physiology caters to the way people learn, study, and remember. Every subject can be read and mastered in one brief sitting. Like the brain teasers that are included at the end of each chapter, Just Enough Physiology emphasizes the logic, and not just the details, behind physiology. Trade ReviewGenomics and Clinical Medicine is the first textbook to comprehensively examine Medicine, especially pathophysiology and pathogenesis, through the lens of genomics. * JAMA *...written by an equally outstanding roaster of authors, deal with all aspects of Genomic Medicine. The book combines general principles, and specific aspects of clinical practice, all in the light of genome analysis and the current laboratory methodologies." * Stylianos E. Antonarakis, Professor and Chairman of Genetic Medicine, University of Geneva, President of Human Genome Organization, Geneva, Switzerland *...most physicians have had little or no training in genetics or genomics, and will be hard pressed to quickly acquire the scientific principles, the medical knowledge, and the psychosocial skills that will be necessary for the successful introduction of genomic medicine. Busy practitioners will desperately need an authoritative source of information that includes both principles and specific applications. The introduction of this textbook, with its distinguished and authoritative list of contributors, thus arrives in the nick of time. Welcome to the genome era. * Francis S. Collins, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA *...the book is a nice overview of developments in different fields of genomic medicine, written by a number of experts who give a thorough description of their argument. * European Journal of Human Genetics *Genomics and Clinical Medicine could be used during the first or second year of medical school to provide an underpinning of genomics as a unifying theme to the diverse array of topics that are typically taught at this time. * New England Journal of Medicine *This is a pioneering work of two doctors who as editors, have undertaken a monumental project, compiling a lot of relatively new knowledge put on paper by a total 50 pioneers in genomic medicine. All the authors and Drs. Kumar and Eng are to be congratulated for this unique, massive contribution to better understanding of disease so that eventually, millions of people can benefit from their work, to lead healthier lives. * Biz India Book Review *Table of ContentsPart I: Principles of Genomic Medicine ; 1. Oxford University Press Nature of Clinical Medicine
Book SynopsisClinical medicine, as a thinking discipline, is concerned not only with what clinicians do, but why. When physicians act in medicine they have some purpose or goal in mind. What they actually do and how they go about it is in the service of their purposes and their goals. Such goals cover a wide range of topics centering on patients, the doctor-patient relationship, the acts of doctoring patients, and the goals involved in being a physician among other physicians working within the institutions of medicine. The Nature of Clinical Medicine takes its direction from a catalog of goals of medicine that range from the expected diagnosis and treatment of diseases to wider concerns for patients, for physicians, and for medicine itself. The chapters are specific in teaching the kinds of knowledge that clinicians require in order to be able to achieve these goals. The central focus of the clinician and of this book is the patient. According to Eric Cassell, everything else, including the diseaseTrade ReviewReading Eric Cassells latest contribution to the medical humanities The Nature of Clinical Medicine is like sipping a fine glass of claret. It requires slow savoring in order to benefit fully from the insights that Dr. Cassell has distilled over a professional lifetime of clinical practice and careful reflection. Cassells book is full of deep insights and human wisdom borne from his rewarding career of treating and caring deeply for patients. * Hillel D.
