Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Politics of Mobile Citizenship in Europe
Book SynopsisThe Politics of Mobile Citizenship in Europe explores contemporary models of national and European Union (EU) citizenship in the context of intra-EU mobility. Scholars have often addressed these models from separate disciplinary standpoints. National citizenship has been studied through the prism of citizenship studies and EU citizenship from an EU studies viewpoint. To contribute to their ongoing discussion and offer a politically embedded perspective, Siklodi applies the citizenship studies lens to the analysis of EU-wide survey data and original focus group evidence of young and highly educated EU mobiles and stayers in Sweden and Britain. Specifically, she investigates political community building processes, including processes of differentiation and exclusion, and the dimensions of citizenship – identity, rights and participation – at the national and EU levels. Siklodi proposes a redefinition of the active/passive citizen dichotomy in terms of mobiles/stayers to provide a more accurate description of contemporary citizen attitudes and behaviours across the European community. Table of ContentsIntroduction: what’s going on? Chapter 1: Citizenship studies, free movement and the EU Chapter 2: European and national citizenship – taking in the actual pictureChapter 3: Community building processes in the context of EU free movementChapter 4: National citizenship and free movement – it is changing!Chapter 5: Young movers: Not (yet) quite ideal European citizensChapter 6: Conclusion: How citizenship might ‘move’ on?

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Learning, Philosophy, and African Citizenship
Book SynopsisThe book addresses the compelling questions concerning the ideals of African citizenship, the processes of learning to fulfill these ideals, and possibilities of education in fostering citizenship. Rather than advocating for one particular framework, the authors demonstrate the continuously contested nature of the concept of citizenship as both theoretically discussed by philosophers and practically experienced in daily lives. The monograph combines, in an unconventional way, selected philosophical accounts and everyday experiences from certain locations in Tanzania and Uganda. It provides contributions from philosophical ideas drawing on scholars such as Chantal Mouffe, Rosi Braidotti, Theodor Adorno and Étienne Balibar on one hand, and the conceptions articulated by groups of inhabitants of rural and urban settings in Africa, on the other hand. Therefore, the book offers fresh readings under the lenses of citizenship and learning. This is an open access book.Table of Contents1. Introduction. By Tiina Kontinen and Katariina Holma.- 2. De Gruyter Religious Communities and Civil Society in
Book SynopsisThe seemingly vitalizing impact of religiosity on civil society is a research topic that has been extensively looked into, not only in the USA, but increasingly also in a European context. What is missing is an evaluation of the role of institutionalized religious communities, and of circumstances that facilitate or impede their status as civil society organisations. This anthology in two volumes aims at closing this gap by providing case studies regarding political, legal and historical aspects in various European countries. Vol. I provides an introduction and looks at cases in Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as chapters on legal issues and data, and comprehensive bibliography.

Brill Stateless Citizenship: The Palestinian-Arab Citizens of Israel
Book SynopsisFar from integration into the Israeli incorporation regime, Palestinians inside the state are today placed in a paradoxical situation where, as Arab citizens of a Jewish state, they are both inside and outside, host and guest, citizen and stateless. Through the paradigm of stateless citizenship, Shourideh C. Molavi examines the dynamics of exclusion of Palestinian citizens and analytically frames the mechanisms through which their statelessness is maintained. With this she centres our analytical gaze on the paradox that it is through the actual provision of Israeli citizenship that Palestinians are deemed stateless. Molavi critically engages with the liberal variant of Zionist thought, and deconstructs discourse around minority rights and liberal citizenship in the context of Israel's racialized ideological and political makeup.Table of ContentsList of Figures Preface Acknowledgements Introduction 1. Brill Citizenship and Democratization in Southeast Asia
Book SynopsisCitizenship and Democratization in Southeast Asia redirects the largely western-oriented study of citizenship to postcolonial states. Providing various fascinating first-hand accounts of how citizens interpret and realize the recognition of their property, identity, security and welfare in the context of a weak rule of law and clientelistic politics, this study highlights the importance of studying citizenship for understanding democratization processes in Southeast Asia. With case studies from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia, this book provides a unique bottom-up perspective on the character of public life in Southeast Asia. Contributors are: Mary Austin, Laurens Bakker, Ward Berenschot, Sheri Lynn Gibbings, Takeshi Ito, David Kloos, Merlyna Lim, Astrid Norén-Nilsson, Oona Pardedes, Emma Porio, Apichat Satitniramai, Wolfram Schaffer and Henk Schulte Nordholt.Trade Review"The international debate over the democratizing effects of citizenship especially in postcolonial societies is gathering strength. Social movements from Asia and Africa to Latin America and Middle East have successfully challenged postcolonial authoritarian regimes and began democratizing political citizenship though not without variations or paradoxes. This book on democratizing citizenship in Southeast Asia is a brilliant and original contribution that walks the reader through these paradoxes. It not only contributes to citizenship studies in general but also in postcolonial societies with a sharp focus on Southeast Asia." – Engin Isin, The Open University, UKTable of ContentsAbout the Authors List of Illustrations 1. Brill The Crisis of Citizenship in the Arab World
Book SynopsisThe Crisis of Citizenship in the Arab World argues that the present crisis of the Arab world has its origins in the historical, legal and political development of state-citizen relations since the beginning of modern history in the Middle East and North Africa. The anthology covers three main topics. Part I focuses on the crisis of the social pact in different Arab countries as it became manifest during the Arab Uprisings. Part II concentrates on concepts of citizenship in Islamic doctrine, Islamic movements (Muslim Brotherhood and Salafism), secular political movements and Arab thinkers. Part III looks into the practices that support the claims to equal rights as well as the factors that have obstructed full citizen rights, such as patronage and clientelism. Brill Containing (Un)American Bodies: Race, Sexuality, and Post-9/11 Constructions of Citizenship
Trade Review"The authors argue that queer, black, brown, and foreign bodies, and the so-called threats they represent, such as immigration reform and same-sex marriage, have been effectively linked with terrorism. These awful conflations … are enduring and help to explain the contradictions of contemporary U.S. politics. We are far from a post post-9/11 world." – Ronald R. Sundstrom, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy, The University of San Francisco "If you want to understand how a new biopolitics of citizenship is containing bodies of the nation by re-inscribing sex and race into it and how this new biopolitics is being resisted you must read this book." – Engin F.
