While studying at the theological college, he is confused by his feelings for a fellow ordinand and suffers a nervous collapse at the altar. His college principal sends him on a placement to London, where he enters an unfamiliar world of outcasts, down-and-outs, rent boys and religious fundamentalists. In increasing despair, he embarks on a journey through the world of Jack the Ripper, the devastation of the Great Plague and the mysteries of his own family. As the past and present come full circle, he finally understands the true meaning of Passion. This is an intelligent and emotive novel, potent with atmosphere and rich in ideas and insights. It employs a unique fictional structure which integrates the contemporary and the historical, the personal and the theological, the comic and the polemic in a revelatory way. On its initial publication, it was hailed as the debut of a major literary talent.Trade ReviewIt takes courage to write about faith in this faithless world, particularly from a homosexual viewpoint. But in The Celibate, Michael Arditti's first novel, the author's anger, conviction and sharp observation hold the reader's attention throughout -- Alistair Bruton * The Times *An ambitious first novel, which traces the liberation of a human soul through a gradual revelation of the meaning of passion and the Passion -- Candia McWilliam * Independent on Sunday *This deeply spiritual novel ... a carefully crafted, intensely analytical and deeply honest theological quest where the storyline becomes consumed in a broader faith journey -- Peter Stanford * Catholic Herald *A bold and multi-layered first novel and one which negotiates a remarkably taut high-wire between frailty and ardour -- Graham Anderson * City Limits *A fine political novel. • Orthodox Christian Perspectives on War

University of Notre Dame Press Orthodox Christian Perspectives on War

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMany regions of the world whose histories include war and violent conflict have or once had strong ties to Orthodox Christianity. Yet policy makers, religious leaders, and scholars often neglect Orthodoxy's resources when they reflect on the challenges of war.Through essays written by prominent Orthodox scholars in the fields of biblical studies, church history, Byzantine studies, theology, patristics, political science, ethics, and biology, Orthodox Christian Perspectives on War presents and examines the Orthodox tradition's nuanced and unique insights on the meaning and challenges of war with an eye toward their contemporary relevance. This volume is structured in three parts: Confronting the Present Day Reality, Reengaging Orthodoxy's Tradition, and Constructive Directions in Orthodox Theology and Ethics. Each exemplifies the value of interdisciplinary reflection on war and the potential for the Eastern Orthodox tradition to enhance ecumenical and interfaith discussTrade Review“This book brings together a number of Orthodox perspectives that are timely, informative yet original, and constructive. Most theological treatments of the ethics of war are Catholic and Protestant, and Orthodox Christians offer a fascinating perspective that might stimulate imaginative thinking and chisel away at some impasses. The volume provides a wonderful springboard for a serious conversation to happen.” —Tobias Winright, Hubert Mäder Endowed Chair of Health Care Ethics, Saint Louis University“Through essays by prominent Orthodox scholars across many fields, this collection presents and examines the Orthodox tradition’s nuanced and unique insights on the meaning and challenges of war with an eye toward their contemporary relevance.” —Publishers Weekly“Orthodox Christian Perspectives on War makes an important contribution to the scholarly conversation on how Orthodoxy views the ethics of war and peace. Since it includes essays from a variety of scholars with expertise in various subdisciplines of religious studies and theology, this study stands alone as an integrated collection of diverse scholarly treatments of the subject matter.” —Philip LeMasters, McMurry University and St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary"Orthodox Christian thought on the phenomenon of war remains largely unknown in the West, an imbalance that this path-breaking volume successfully amends. These twelve essays grapple with biblical, patristic, historical and theological sources, presenting critical insights through a diverse range of perspectives and methodologies. This volume will no doubt become the standard point of departure for subsequent scholarly discussions of this topic among Eastern Orthodox Christians, as well as for all those seeking meaningful and novel options in the endeavor to understand the complex and disturbing reality of war." —Rev. Maximos Constas, Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology"Protestants and Catholics are heirs to two traditions regarding war and peace—'Just War Theory' and 'Christian Pacifism.' While Eastern Orthodoxy has no systematic stance on war or military service, this collection demonstrates that it can cast new light on the debate, providing evidence of distinct approaches to the question and a critique of those who maintain that orthodox teaching can be subsumed under those developed by Western Christianity. Beyond a general consensus that no war is just but is at best a lesser evil, this book displays some surprising vantages." —Library Journal

Book SynopsisUncovering an ancient foundation myth, and literary tour de force, obscured within the modern Bible. Embedded within the Bible lies a largely unknown story of the founding of ancient Israel and its religion, interwoven with other ancient tales more than two thousand years ago in the process of creating the Torah. Generations of scholars have painstakingly worked to recreate the Priestly Source, also known as P. The complete text has not appeared until now on its own in either Hebrew or English. Beginning with the creation of the world and ending at the edge of the promised land, the Priestly Source offers a distinctive account of the origins of the people of Israel and a unique perspective on their relationship with their god, Yahwehone in stark contrast to what is found when we read the Bible now. With a translation by Liane Feldman, an authority on the text, TheConsuming Fire reveals the mythical foundation for the practice of sacrifice in ancient Israelite and Jewish religion. By presenting this fascinating material on its own, TheConsuming Fire offers an opportunity to expand our understanding of ancient traditions and to find something new and beautiful at the source.Trade Review"This standout addition to the World Literature in Translation collection is based in diligent scholarship and provides a readable, modern translation that will be accessible to a broad audience. . . . • Heavens Wrath

    Cornell University Press Heavens Wrath

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHeaven's Wrath explores the religious thought and religious rites of the early Dutch Atlantic world. D. L. Noorlander argues that the Reformed Church and the West India Company forged and maintained a close union, with considerable consequences across the seventeenth century. Noorlander questions the core assumptions about why the Dutch failed to establish a durable empire in America. He downplays the usual commercial explanations and places the focus instead on the tremendous expenses incurred in the Calvinist-backed war and the Reformed Church's meticulous, worried management of colonial affairs. By pinpointing the issues that hampered the size and import of the Dutch Atlantic world, Noorlander revises core notions about the organization and aims of the Dutch empire, the culture of the West India Company, and the very shape of Dutch society. Open Access edition funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.Trade ReviewHeaven's Wrath is a well-written and enjoyable monograph based on thorough research in an enormous collection of primary sources by an author who demonstrates joy in writing. Noorlander has written a book that is a boon for everyone interested in any religious element of the Dutch Atlantic. It will prove to be a welcome reference (in both the text itself and its footnotes) for everyone working on this general topic. * New West Indian Guide *For me, as a Dutch scholar of New Netherland, Heaven's Wrath is a nail in the coffin of the antiquated idea that New Amsterdam was founded solely 'to make a buck,'. Heaven's Wrath is a deeply impressive, even-handed, and nuanced treatment of the relationship between faith, worship, and the emerging capitalist economy of the Dutch Republic, as epitomized in the West India Company. It is an important contribution to the scholarship of the Atlantic World. * The New England Quarterly *Heaven's Wrath adds an important perspective to the growing scholarship that shows that the company's objectives were not exclusively or even largely commercial. * William & Mary Quarterly *In Heaven's Wrath, the American historian Danny Noorlander successfully disproves some of the 'most persistent claims' made in Anglo-American scholarship about the role of religion in early modern Dutch expansion. * Low Countries Historical Review *Writing with clarity, sardonic humor, and a vibrant selection of quotes from diligently mined materials, D. L. Noorlander gives a fresh account of the often-separate institutional histories of the seventeenth-century Dutch Reformed Church and the Dutch West India Company (WIC). He provides plentiful evidence that spiritual zeal drove Dutch colonization in the Atlantic, and that it was religious rigor among the WIC's administrators and their colonial directors and ministers, not laxity, that prevented the widespread conversion of conquered or neighboring populations. * Early American Literature *Noorlander, fluent in Dutch, exploits both English and Dutch sources to good effect. He shines a bright light on how churchmen forged a moral edge to the commercial ambitions of the West India Company. With "God and Mammon" cast as "partners" in the era of Dutch Atlantic expansion—and near equal partners at that—Noorlander presents a significant correction to the popular view that only New England Puritans can claim the mantle of sublime religious motivation for their colonial conquests. * Journal of British Studies *Heaven's Wrath is a groundbreaking work that will become the standard for those seeking to understand the role of the DRC [Dutch Reformed Church] and WIC [West India Company] in the early modern Atlantic world. * Church History *In Heaven's Wrath, Noorlander provides a new focused study of the Netherlands' Atlantic Empire that dismisses one old idea and breathes new life into another as part of his analysis of Calvinist influence in the West India Company (WIC). He effectively challenges prevailing truisms regarding the Dutch Empire in West Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and New Netherland. * Pennsylvania History *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction: The Role of Reformed Christianity in the Commercial and Colonial Endeavors of the Dutch Golden Age 1. • City of Saints: Rebuilding Rome in the Early

University of Pennsylvania Press City of Saints: Rebuilding Rome in the Early

Book SynopsisIt was far from inevitable that Rome would emerge as the spiritual center of Western Christianity in the early Middle Ages. After the move of the Empire's capital to Constantinople in the fourth century and the Gothic Wars in the sixth century, Rome was gradually depleted physically, economically, and politically. How then, asks Maya Maskarinec, did this exhausted city, with limited Christian presence, transform over the course of the sixth through ninth centuries into a seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of sanctity? Conventional narratives explain the rise of Christian Rome as resulting from an increasingly powerful papacy. In City of Saints, Maskarinec looks outward, to examine how Rome interacted with the wider Mediterranean world in the Byzantine period. During the early Middle Ages, the city imported dozens of saints and their legends, naturalized them, and physically layered their cults onto the city's imperial and sacred topography. Maskarinec documents Rome's spectacular physical transformation, drawing on church architecture, frescoes, mosaics, inscriptions, Greek and Latin hagiographical texts, and less-studied documents that attest to the commemoration of these foreign saints. These sources reveal a vibrant plurality of voices—Byzantine administrators, refugees, aristocrats, monks, pilgrims, and others—who shaped a distinctly Roman version of Christianity. City of Saints extends its analysis to the end of the ninth century, when the city's ties to the Byzantine world weakened. Rome's political and economic orbits moved toward the Carolingian world, where the saints' cults circulated, valorizing Rome's burgeoning claims as a microcosm of the "universal" Christian church.Trade Review"Considerable strengths undergird this study. The author's expertise on the topography and legends of the city of Rome are evident throughout; her reading is broad and current . . . Excellent maps and plates (often photographed by the author herself ) are liberally spread throughout the volume, and they complement the story she tells. The reader comes away with a visceral sense of what it meant to live in medieval Rome and how the veneration of saints was woven into the urban fabric." * The Journal of Religion *"Maskarinec's evocative reading of the diverse array of saints is grounded in the author's extensive knowledge of the complex physical history of early medieval Rome. City of Saints charts new territory in attending to audiences' perceptions of saints and the monuments dedicated to them and thereby uncovers how sanctity redeemed buildings surviving from Rome's classical past, since narratives about saints shaped both responses to antiquity and the growth of the city's early medieval built fabric." * Speculum *"City of Saints is an exceptional piece of scholarship, readable, even inviting. It might be the most important analysis of popular Christianity for the city of Rome in the early Middle Ages." * George Demacopoulos, Fordham University *"Maya Maskarinec has done more than any author before her to explain why (and how) saints came to be inserted into and associated with particular places in Rome. It is rare to see a scholar with such a solid command of both the hagiographical literature and the most current scholarship on Roman archaeology, topography, and social history." * Hendrik Dey, Hunter College *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1. Book SynopsisFor pious converts to Christianity in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century New England, all reality was shaped by religious devotion and biblical text. It is therefore not surprising that earnest believers who found themselves marginalized by their race or sex relied on their faith to reconcile the tension between the spiritual experience of rebirth and the social ordeal of exclusion and injustice. In ""Piety and Dissent"", Eileen Razzari Elrod examines the religious autobiographies of six early Americans who represented various sorts of marginality: John Marrant, Olaudah Equiano, and Jarena Lee, all of African or African American heritage; Samson Occom (Mohegan) and William Apess (Pequot); and Abigail Abbott Bailey, a white woman who was subjected to extreme domestic violence. Through close readings of these personal narratives, Elrod uncovers the complex rhetorical strategies employed by pious outsiders to challenge the particular kinds of oppression each experienced. She identifies recurrent ideals and images drawn from Scripture and Protestant tradition - parables of liberation, rage, justice, and opposition to authority - that allowed them to see resistance as a religious act and, more than that, imbued them with a sense of agency. What the life stories of these six individuals reveal, according to Elrod, is that conventional Christianity in early America was not the hegemonic force that church leaders at the time imagined, and that many people since have believed it to be. Nor was there a clear distinction between personal piety and religious, social, and political resistance. To understand fully the role of religion in the early period of American letters, we must rethink some of our most fundamental assumptions about the function of Christian faith in the context of individual lives.Trade ReviewThis book accomplishes much in short compass.... One of Elrod's goals is to return an understanding of religion to the center of scholarship about early American texts, and she does that capably and imaginatively.... Spiritual autobiography remains one of the most 'teachable' genres in early American literature, and Elrod's book will extend how we conceive and follow through on such instruction. - Philip F. • A Liturgical Play for the Medieval Feast of

Boydell & Brewer Ltd A Liturgical Play for the Medieval Feast of

Book SynopsisA newly identified medieval play for the Feast of Fools, with a new English translation and musical edition ready for performance. Scholars and non-scholars alike have long been fascinated by the medieval "Feast of Fools", the annual celebration on or around the New Year that came to be known for its inversion of established hierarchies, its boisterousness, and its scurrilous, even sacrilegious, clerical behaviour. However, we now know that many of the most obscene and subversive practices associated with the feast were, in fact, the misunderstandings, exaggerations, or even fabrications of overzealous ecclesiastical reformers. Our most reliable information about the Feast comes from the scant extant liturgical items that clerical communities actually used during their celebrations. This book shows that the twelfth-century Ordo Joseph from Laon, in France - a play long-known to scholars, telling the story of Joseph the patriarch and his brothers -- is in fact a drama for the Feast of Fools, long hidden in plain sight, intended for performance at Epiphany. It situates the play within the context of the cathedral community's history of biblical exegesis under its school-master Anselm of Laon, proposing "performative gloss" as an important new tool for understanding how medieval liturgical dramas generated meaning. It Includes a new Latin edition of the text, accompanied by an English translation, as well as a musical reconstruction that harnesses the music of Laon's liturgy and finally makes possible a performance of this spectacular, newly identified Feast of Fools drama.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Notes on the Text List of Abbreviations Introduction: A New Play for the Feast of Fools Part I: Study 1: The Ordo Joseph in Context 2: The Scriptures and the Staging 3: The Joseph Story as Model and Reversal 4: Anti-Jewish Sentiment and the Passion Part II: Text, Music, and Commentary Text and Translation The Music of the Ordo Joseph Notes and Commentary Bibliography Index

Through a careful evaluation of the New Testament Gospels and other surviving sources, including the more recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Peter, Ehrman shows why Jesus should be understood as an apocalyptic prophet who anticipated the destruction of evil, the end of the age, and beginning of a new world - not 2000 years after his lifetime, but in less than 30.Trade Reviewthis is a stimulating and worthwhile book that will not always convince but should serve to convey the excitement of New Testament studies to all to read it. * Bishop Paul Richardson, The Church of England Newspaper, Aug. 18th 2000. *this is a very readable book ... Book SynopsisDiscover the historical, literary, and theological significance of the book of Micah Written by Carolyn J. Sharp, a leading scholar of biblical prophetic literature, this commentary provides scholars and preachers with a thorough overview of historical, literary, and theological dimensions of the book of Micah. The commentary also examines Micah?s reception history by Jewish and Christian interpreters and considers Micah?s witness as valuable for ecological ethics. The volume is part of the Eerdmans Illuminations series, in which authors employ the full range of biblical scholarship to illumine the text from a wide variety of perspectives, including the engagement and impact of the text through the centuries. Excerpt from the commentary: ?In oracle after beautifully crafted oracle, through diverse and artful rhetorical means, Micah teaches his community to remain resilient through national and regional traumas; he urges them to engage in active resistance of the depredations of the elite and the violence of invading armies; he exhorts them to reform their understanding of YHWH?s requirements for ethical life and faithful theological praxis; and he invites them to rejoice in the divine deliverance they had known in days of old and can envision for the future restoration of Zion. As contemporary readers and communities gather around the book of Micah, we too can find in its pages extraordinary resources for resilience, resistance, reformation, and rejoicing.?

Book SynopsisAn engaging theological commentary on 1Corinthians that emphasizes practical applications for Christian life and ministry Authored by renowned New Testament scholar Michael J. Gorman, this commentary is designed for pastors, students, scholars, and lay people who want a careful exposition of 1Corinthians that stresses its theological content and considers its spiritual, pastoral, and missional implications for today. As Gorman leads readers through the biblical text, he explores key Pauline themes found in his previous work on Paul while he interprets 1Corinthians as a pastoral letter about the marks of the church?a summons to the body of Christ then and now to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Like Gorman?s highly regarded commentary on Romans, this commentary on 1Corinthians emphasizes the letter?s practical applications and includes questions for reflection and sidebars on important topics, all of which make it an essential resource for teaching and preaching at any level.

Book SynopsisNamed One of Fifteen Important Theology Books of 2022, Englewood Review of Books Congregations often seek to combat the crisis of decline by using innovation to produce new resources. But leading practical theologian Andrew Root shows that the church's crisis is not in the loss of resources; it's in the loss of life--and that life can only return when we remain open to God's encountering presence. This book addresses the practical form the church must take in a secular age. Root uses two stories to frame the book: one about a church whose building becomes a pub and the other about Karl Barth. Root argues that Barth should be understood as a pastor with a deep practical theology that can help church leaders today. Churches and the Crisis of Decline pushes the church to be a waiting community that recognizes that the only way for it to find life is to stop seeing the church as the star of its own story. Instead of resisting decline, congregations must remain open to divine action. Root offers a rich vision for the church's future that moves away from an obsession with relevance and resources and toward the living God. This is the fourth book in Root's Ministry in a Secular Age series.Table of ContentsContents1. When the Church Becomes a Pub, and the Immanent Frame Our Map2.
