Wherever fascism has taken root, it has met with resistance. From taking a bullet for a frightened schoolgirl in Alabama to saving Greek Jews from extermination by way of fake IDs, each of the fifteen hard-drinking, chain-smoking clerics featured in this book were willing to risk their lives for what they believed.Trade Review‘Fascinating…full of stories you may not know but which need to be heard’ -- Spectator, BOOKS OF THE YEAR‘This winter’s best title is Fergus Butler-Gallie’s work on wartime heroics by the clergy.’ -- Patrick Kidd, The Times‘A timely and uplifting book… An hugely enjoyable if slightly eccentric account of clerical heroism in the face of evil… [Butler-Gallie] achieves an inspiring effect through the sheer cumulative impact of so many brave decisions.’ -- Julian Coman, Observer‘… this book is a gripping story of bravery, derring-do and cunning in the face of Fascism… vividly told tales of 15 people who became caught up in the struggles against Fascism in Europe in the 1930s’ * Tablet *’15 short, engaging essays… The reverend is a good writer with a light touch, and a natural storyteller.’ -- New Statesman‘… it is refreshing to read an unashamedly admiring study of priests and ministers who have put their lives on the line… readable and moving.' -- BBC History Magazine‘Here the Reverend Butler-Gallie wittily profiles 15 “loose cannons” who stood up against fascism’. -- Strong Words‘Butler-Gallie serves them and their stories well with background information, a fluent narrative style, and a fine eye for the quirky and telling personal or historical detail.’ -- Church Times'As entertaining as it is erudite, this enthralling anthology presents a cornucopia of quirky, courageous Fascist-fighting clerics.' -- LoveReading‘A field guide to 20th-century priests, monks and nuns from all over the world who were prepared to die for their faith and to die saving others... A handful of religious people stood tall and met the challenge – the little-known men and women vividly described in these fascinating pages opposed both fascism and religious authority to fight the true good fight. If only there had been more like them!’ -- Matthew Cobb, author of The ResistancePraise for A Field Guide to the English Clergy: ‘A group biography of ecclesiastical nuttiness… All gloriously mad.' The Times, Books of the Year 2018 ‘Eye-popping tales of lunacy, debauchery and depravity…Butler-Gallie knows whereof he writes, being a curate himself, and he has done a splendid job presenting a smorgasbord of most peculiar parsons.' Sebastian Shakespeare, Daily Mail ‘We have…always kept a special haven for oddballs in the Church of England, as Fergus Butler-Gallie demonstrates in this entertaining compendium…Their foibles cover all bases from absentmindedness to epic drunkenness…I'm glad I read this one. It's a lot of fun.' The Times ‘Entertainingly erudite…But it is also a surprisingly profound work…For all its mischief, Butler-Gallie's work of lightly worn erudition is a paean to a great English institution, finely tuned to the temper of its representatives, good, bad and indifferent. We should treasure it more.' Literary Review ‘A humorous compendium of some of the oddball clergy who have served the Church over the centuries...These thumbnail portraits reveal a very broad church indeed.' New Statesman ‘The Church of England has produced some real oddballs in its time, and this is an entertaining gallop through several centuries' worth of them…Butler-Gallie has done his homework, digging out some rare gems…This is the story not just of eccentrics, but also of a leisured age that is no more.' Harry Mount, Spectator ‘Wonderfully entertaining…A hilarious yet thoughtful reminder that the Christian faith wasn't always thought incompatible with a sense of humour or a healthy bolshiness.' Sunday Times ‘It may have the makings of a modern classic…Butler-Gallie chronicles not just Anglican follies, but also human weaknesses which we all share and with which we can perhaps sympathise.' The Catholic Herald ‘This is a ridiculously enjoyable book: funny, compassionate, and wonderfully well-written.' Tom Holland ‘A delightful, sympathetic, humorous and earthed cocktail of quirky English clergy.' The Rt Revd David Wilbourne

  • A History of Christianity in Wales

University of Wales Press A History of Christianity in Wales

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisChristianity, in its Catholic, Protestant and Nonconformist forms, has played an enormous role in the history of Wales and in the defining and shaping of Welsh identity over the past two thousand years. Biblical place names, an urban and rural landscape littered with churches, chapels, crosses and sacred sites, a bardic and literary tradition deeply imbued with Christian themes in both the Welsh and English languages, and the songs sung by tens of thousands of rugby supporters at the national stadium in Cardiff, all hint at a Christian presence that was once universal. Yet for many in contemporary Wales, the story of the development of Christianity in their country remains little known. While the history of Christianity in Wales has been a subject of perennial interest for Welsh historians, much of their work has been highly specialised and not always accessible to a general audience. Standing on the shoulders of some of Wales’s finest historians, this is the first single-volume history of Welsh Christianity from its origins in Roman Britain to the present day. Drawing on the expertise of four leading historians of the Welsh Christian tradition, this volume is specifically designed for the general reader, and those beginning their exploration of Wales’s Christian past.Table of ContentsForeword Rowan Williams Preface David Ceri Jones Chapter 1. Book SynopsisAs a missionary, wife, and mum of fifteen, Katie Davis Majors knows how hard it can be to receive God's peace instead of giving in to fear and worry. Family emergencies, unexpected life-shifting events, and the busy rhythms of family life have at times left her reeling. In 'Safe All Along', Katie offers reflections and stories from around the world and from her own kitchen table about her personal journey toward living from a place of surrendered trust. Every chapter leads us deep into Scripture as we learn what it looks like to break free from anxiety and take hold of peace. Rich in biblical explorations of lament and praise, forgiveness and hope, service and surrender, Safe All Along asks, what practical choices can we make to experience the peace Jesus promised amid disappointment and uncertainty? How can we live with joy and confidence even when we're pulled into the rapids of life? Our God has promised us a peace that transcends all understanding. And we can accept his promise, trusting that in him we are safe all along.

  • Bringing God Up to Date: and why Christians need

Collective Ink Bringing God Up to Date: and why Christians need

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisReligion is an essential part of our humanity. We all follow some form of religion, in the original meaning of the word. But organized religion establishes definitions, boundaries and hierarchies which the founders would be amazed by. This is perhaps more true of Christianity than most other religions, due to the short life of Jesus, his sudden death, the lack of any contemporary records. His teaching about the kingdom of God is great; it could see us through our time on earth. But his followers watered it down and soon lost it altogether. It became a kingdom in heaven for the few, rather than one here and now for everyone. The Church, or Churches, that resulted became increasingly irrelevant, even a hindrance, to seeing it realized. Many will always find security and truth in the traditions that developed, and good for them. But for those who can't, for those who have given up on religion or never thought it worth considering, the original teachings are worth another look. If we could recover them and live by them, we could change ourselves and the world for the better. We could bring God up to date.

  • The Message of Colossians and Philemon: Fullness

Inter-Varsity Press The Message of Colossians and Philemon: Fullness

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFullness and freedom - two aspects of Christian life that we all want to share. Paul wrote about them at length (and depth) in his letter to the Christians at Colossae, where certain new teachers were proclaiming that 'mere Christianity' is not enough. There is, they suggested, a fuller experience, a greater liberation, than they had so far enjoyed. But Paul was adamant: all God's fullness is in Christ alone, and only through his complete work are we set free. Paul’s letter to Philemon is of particular interest to us as a letter to an individual friend and convert. Yet it is not marked ‘personal and private’. It was also to be read by the church in Philemon’s house. This letter applies the themes of the fullness and freedom found in the gospel to the complex situation of Onesimus and Philemon, a scenario with much to teach us today about the relationship of the gospel of Christ to social concerns. These are the great objective truths of the faith that Dick Lucas highlights in his exposition, enabling us to see both the riches that are ours in Christ and the irrelevance - even blasphemy - of all would-be improvements on what God has done.

  • What on Earth is Heaven?

Inter-Varsity Press What on Earth is Heaven?

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat happens to us when we die? Will heaven be a place of fluffy clouds, angels and cherubs playing harps? Is the Christian faith just about securing a place in heaven when we die? In What on Earth is Heaven? James Paul explores the radical truth of what the Bible says about heaven and the afterlife, and its relevance for your life here and now on earth. Unpacking the biblical story of the separation and reunion of heaven and earth, he shows that heaven isn’t a place somewhere ‘out there’ but a dimension of reality – the dimension where God's will is done. The Good News isn't that we get to escape to heaven, but that God invites us to be a part of his plan to bring the kingdom of heaven to our square inch of the earth. Insightful and accessible, What on Earth is Heaven? is a book for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of the Bible’s teaching on heaven, or anyone who has wondered about the true meaning of finding heaven on earth. Life-affirming and uplifting, this book will fire your imagination as to how you can be a part of bringing heaven to the world around you.Trade ReviewThis is exactly what I want in a book of theology: a humble teacher, a good writer who reads (bonus points for frequent references to Lewis and Tolkien!), and a winsome love of Scripture. When I was a kid and became a Christian, I believed that I was saved, but I didn’t know what I was saved for. Jim’s book, like a companion to N. T. Wright’s Surprised by Hope, is a rousing reminder of how good the Good News is. -- Andrew Peterson * singer/songwriter, author and founder of The Rabbit Room *Profound, wise, insightful, inspiring. Jim (or James) Paul gives us a fresh and readable take on the great story-line of the Bible. Read this book and discover how we can start to experience the reality of heaven in the here and now. A fresh restatement of the deeply influential and compelling vision of L'Abri. -- Professor John Wyatt * neonatal paediatrician and author of 'Matters of Life and Death' *On the face of it, Jim Paul might have been expected to share the view common to so many western contemporaries: the material world is the totality of existence, death is a brutal end, the afterlife is a deluded pipe-dream. As a trained medical doctor, he was fully immersed in modern scientific methods and ended up as an palliative care specialist in a hospice. But this would reveal both a lack of knowledge of Jim and, more significantly, a lack of deep engagement with the wonder of Christ. This book is a rich treasure, probing hope for our future that is grounded on the great truths of what God has already done. But most importantly of all, far from being an escape into fantasy, this exploration of the wonders of heaven is truly a journey into reality. -- Mark Meynell * Director (Europe & Caribbean), Langham Preaching, Langham Partnership *Jim Paul is a has provided us a great service in What On Earth is Heaven. The idea of heaven as a fluffy place in the sky or home for the morally good has been so engrained in popular culture it can be hard to picture exactly what heaven is like. Paul cuts through the myths and offers a clear, biblical view of heaven as a dimension of reality – where God’s will is done. Somewhere we can imagine for the future yet experience in the here and now. Paul is a steady hand and winsome guide. A must for all who long for the new creation and long to see it leak into our everyday lives. -- Alastair Gordon * artist and director Morphe¯ Arts *

  • We Believe: Exploring The Nicene Faith

Inter-Varsity Press We Believe: Exploring The Nicene Faith

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed of AD 381 was a key statement in the context of the theological controversies and confessional atmosphere of the fourth century church. Alexander Irving explores Christian belief about God, creation and redemption as it is expressed in the Creed, and thereby contributes to the ongoing task of the church’s self-examination of its talk about God. * Sets out the importance of our tradition and the intrinsic relationship between the thought of the church today and the thought of the church across time. * Grounds the Creed in its historical and theological context. * Connects the theology of the Creed to some areas of contemporary theological inquiry. The Creed sets out the basic parameters of Christian belief. While the specifics of what is believed within those parameters are not determined, there is an internal logic to the Creed's presentation of the Christian faith. The contrast between God's internal and external relations is the theological motif that gives particular shape to the Creed, which expresses an expansive vision of the generosity of God, with his relation to creation grounded in his being as love.Trade ReviewAlex Irving is very well versed in ... the ancient and modern discussions and is in a marvellous position to explain both of them to interested readers. His work shows the way to a sophisticated and genuine appropriation of Nicene theology in the church today, an appropriation in which God’s inner relations as Father, Son and Spirit hold pride of place and govern the way we understand the creation and redemption of humanity. If you are brave enough to dive into the deep waters of trinitarian theology, this book is just what you need. * Donald Fairbairn, Professor of Early Christianity, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Charlotte NC, USA *The fourth century was a crucial time for the development of the mature doctrine of the Trinity and that development is a classic example of the way that doctrines develop. Alex Irving is to be congratulated for giving us an up to date, reliable and readable (so far as the material allows!) account of this hugely important phase in the history of theology. Thoroughly recommended. * Tony Lane, Professor of Historical Theology, London School of Theology *An enlightening and comprehensive examination of the importance of the creed in the living faith of the church, the theological disputes that lead from Nicaea to Constantinople, and the abiding significance of their creeds. An important read for anyone who wants to take their faith seriously. * John Behr, Regius Professor of Humanity, University of Aberdeen, Scotland *Alex Irving admirably offers a narratival tour de force of the Nicene faith. There is a story to be told, which is often reduced to arid platitudes and jargon. Irving excels at inviting the reader into the world and plotlines of the Nicene theologians in exciting and accessible ways. In the process the reader comes to see how the original trinitarian theology of the Nicenes ought to be the fertile seedbed by which all subsequent constructive theologies come to blossom. * Bobby Grow, independent scholar and author of the Athanasian Reformed blog *The simple phrase ‘the Nicene faith’ is a helpful way of pointing to the doctrinal core of Christian belief. Yet the phrase condenses so much profound analysis, simplifies so many interpretive complexities, and summarizes so much historical controversy, that it requires some unpacking. Irving's book is the perfect guide to the depths beneath the motto. * Professor Fred Sanders, Associate Director of Torrey Honors, Biola University *This is a very fine and indeed quite thorough introduction to the Nicene faith. Irving judiciously synthesizes revisionist scholarship of the last fifty years or so, jettisoning the hackneyed narratives of the past. The book masterfully sets the Nicene faith in its historical, theological and ecclesial context; charts its circuitous articulation in the fourth century in the course of extensive theological debate; and provides a nuanced account of the various theological positions in conflict with one another. But this volume provides even more: it is also a well-reasoned apologia for the importance of credal faith itself rooted in the Great Tradition of the church. Addressed to Protestants yet ecumenical in approach, this book should prove to be an excellent resource for Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox Christians alike. * Mark DelCogliano, Associate Professor of Theology, University of St Thomas, Minnesota, USA *This is a learned book, engaging with the whole range of scholarship on the subject of creeds in general and Nicaea in particular. It is also lucid and accessible. The reciprocity of scripture and tradition is set out in a way that honours the primacy of scripture but also gives weight to the human voice, the human reception and living in the reality of revelation. The trinitarian focus on revelation is a strong and persuasive way into a discussion on the role of creeds. The conclusion is a masterclass in theological method, drawing out the logic of the Nicene process. I would expect this book to make a regular appearance on reading lists in theology faculties and theological colleges. * Jane Williams, McDonald Professor in Theology, St Mellitus College, London *A helpful introduction to the idea of a Christian creed and a thoughtful account of Athanasius' understanding of the Nicene faith. With great clarity, Alex Irving presents key new research on Nicaea and the crucial fourth century, and situates Athanasius in conversation with several modern theologians. * Christopher Beeley, Professor of Divinity, Duke Divinity School, USA *

Book SynopsisFew things are more essential to the health of the church than clear understanding of the Bible's teaching concerning the person of Jesus Christ. Doctrine informs devotion, and this, in turn, motivates discipleship. Neglect or misunderstanding of Christology will inevitably weaken Christian character and conduct. Furthermore, the ascendancy of pluralism leads many to the view that there is nothing unique about Jesus, and the media regularly present distorted portraits of him. It is essential that the church is able to proclaim the authentic and incomparable Christ to a needy world. This stimulating volume, based on the second Affinity Theological Study Conference, offers biblical and theological explorations of the majesty and mystery of God incarnate in Jesus Christ. All the contributors are fully committed to the belief that the Jesus of the Bible is the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith. These studies are intended not only to stretch and enlighten minds, but also to stir hearts and transform lives.

Book SynopsisRobert Culver wrote Systematic Theology with the goal of creating a treasure trove for the student of the Bible. No previous knowledge of theology demanded, this volume is written in an essentially readable way and is the perfect core to the library of anyone who loves to learn. Subjects include: the doctrine of God, the doctrine of man as created, the doctrine of man as fallen, the doctrine of salvation, the doctrine of last things, and the doctrine of Christ.Trade ReviewThis wide-ranging, well-directed, sharp-sighted textbook is his magnum opus... This one stands high as a demonstration of the biblical rationality of the Reformed faith. -- J. I. Packer, Professor, Regent College, Canada ((1926–2020), Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, Canada)Here is a bold, comprehensive, and faithful systematic theology. -- R. Albert Mohler Jr. President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kentucky (President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)Dr. Culver has given us a classic statement of the evangelical faith. This is a book to come back to again and again. -- Timothy George, Dean, Beeson Divinity School , Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama & executive editor of Christianity Today (Founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)"Culver's Systematic Theology is biblically grounded, edifying and thorough. As a theologian, he writes with the worshipful reverence of a Puritan, the stirring exhortation of a prophet, the logical precision of a philosopher, and the wise guidance of a pastor. His desire to ground all our theology in Scripture is obvious throughout." -- K. Erik Thoennes, Professor, Biola University, CaliforniaThe labor of a lifetime. This theological resource proves to be thoroughly biblical, soundly orthodox, and eminently readable... it receives my warm commendation. -- Richard Mayhue, Executive Vice President, The Master's College and Seminary, CaliforniaThe oft ignored doctrine of the perspicuity of Scripture has found a new champion in Robert Culver's thorough yet engaging Systematic Theology. First, last, and always he is a teacher, a teacher of the sure and certain doctrines of the Bible. Culver's theology is in keeping with the best of reformation and subsequent evangelical traditions. We are eager to see Robert Culver's Systematic Theology translated into the Magyar tongue. It is hoped his words will, as they have with so many of his American students, encourage and inform sound Bible teaching in the reawakening pulpits of the Hungarian people. -- Michael A. Braun'Here is the rich harvest of a dedicated scholar's lifetime of study, teaching, and writing. There is no area of theology that Dr. Culver fails to discuss with a masterful grasp of all the relevant issues. What I especially appreciate is his command of significant literature. This exhaustive work provides a resource that pastors in particular will find of great help in dealing with doctrinal questions.' -- Vernon Grounds (1914-2010), Chancellor, Denver Seminary, Littleton, Colorado"Culver brings both the explicitly biblical framework of Reymond and the historical-mindedness of McGrath together in one massive volume!" -- Tony Reinke, Shepherds Scrapbook 'It was my pleasure to study in Dr. Culver's systematic theology courses at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Long have I cherished his notes from such classes as "sin and salvation" and "ecclesiology and eschatology." What I learned from him has served me exceptionally well as an evangelical professor. As I perused the present work, it was just as if I were back in the classroom. Dr. Culver's careful presentation and encyclopedic wisdom shine through these pages. I am grateful that the current generation of Bible students-and those to come-will now be able to learn from one of the American masters of theology.' -- Kendell H. Easley, Professor of Biblical Studies, Union University, Germantown, Tennessee‘Dr Robert Culver has been an "international treasure" in the church for years and has helped many of us in our personal walk and ministry. As a theologian, he is biblical and balanced, and he keeps reminding us that theology is for living and not just for studying. He believes that a theologian should challenge and instruct and he fulfills these ministries admirably. Both the young preacher and the veteran will find enlightenment and nourishment in these pages.' -- Warren W. Book SynopsisThe post-modern society is so focussed on the internal life of the individual that it makes the significance of the cross a difficult concept to grasp. Even Christians are trying to find alternative ways of explaining it - some have abandoned the concept of atonement entirely.Jesus, though, is far more than a victim. When God receives and approves the condemned Jesus he transcends the world of oppressor and victim to create a new humanity, capable of new kinds of relationships. Atonement speaks of a transition from brokenness, alienation and the death of love to a place of restoration, healing, and wholeness. A place that holds out hope for deepening friendships and mutual confidence - the exact same things the post-modern mind is lacking, and is looking for.Trade Review'Paul Wells faces head-on the modern (and not-so-modern) challenges to a Biblical viewpoint on the atonement. He evaluates knowledgeably and fairly the most significant denials on such crucial issues as the wrath of God, penal substitution, imputation and propitiation.... It will be an important aid for those who wish to preach effectively the Gospel' -- Douglas Kelly, Richard Jordan Professor of Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina (Professor of Theology Emeritus, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina)... a rich book, pious and scientific at the same time, written in an easy readable, pleasant style. I really hope this book will be read by many people, enrichening their understanding and experience of God's mighty deeds in the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus. -- H.G.L. Peels (Principal, Theological University of Apeldoorn, Netherlands)'Paul is emerging as one of the premier evangelical theologians of our day. Cross Words is at once accessible and erudite.' -- William Edgar, Professor of Apologetics, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Professor of Apologetics, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)"Paul Wells...unwraps the various words and their meaning in this substantial treatment. Concepts such as love, Justice, Mediator, Violence, Sacrifice, and many move from the basis of the book but he also interacts with modern objections of Atonement of atonement showing a deep insight into how the atonement is relevant to post-modern culture." -- Dee Cornell, CLC World, CLC...No other theme is more influential in capturing your heart in thanksgiving and worship... Rooted deeply in Biblical revelation, Paul Wells challenges recent contemporary thought and establishes the absolute necessity of Christ's sufferings on our behalf. -- Terry Virgo (Founder of Newfrontiers and well-known Bible Teacher, London)'This is a satisfying book about the atonement, written by a man of God who lives in the biblical text, and yet is in close touch with the real world and today's church. Who can fail to profit from a book like this?' -- Stuart Olyott, Pastoral Director of The Evangelical Movement of Wales (Pastoral Director, Evangelical Movement of Wales)Wells has performed a remarkable and necessary service for the 21st century church. Taking on all the major opponents of the doctrine of the atonement, Wells answers their objections with convincing and balanced arguments. • Judges: Such a Great Salvation

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Judges: Such a Great Salvation

Book SynopsisThe Church has a problem with Judges, it is so earthy, puzzling, primitive and violent – so much so that the Church can barely stomach it. It falls under the category ‘embarrassing scripture’. Such an attitude is, of course, wrong so Ralph Davis here makes Judges digestible by analysing the major literary and theological themes discovered in each section, providing a ‘theocentric’ exposition.Trade ReviewDr. Davis has a great sense of fun. He must often have his class or his congregation in stitches! -- Christian ArenaOne of the reasons I enjoy Davis's exposition so much is that I feel confident that he has done his exegetical homework, and so is not just delivering blessed, unhistorical thoughts on the text. Yet at the same time, he applies the text so well. -- Simon Gathercole (Director of Studies, Theology and Religious Studies, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University, Cambridge)an excellent… crisp, lively… exposition on Judges. -- Bibliotheca SacraThe most practical expository work that this reviewer has ever encountered. -- Southwestern Journal of TheologyThis was a very edifying and enjoyable Bible commentary through the book of Judges. The commentary divides Judges into three parts with a total of twenty one chapters. I think anyone who is studying the book of Judge will find this commentary as an indispensable resource. The great thing about the way the author writes is that it is accessible for preachers as well as the person in the pew. -- The Domain for Truth blogThere is here much practical biblical instruction for the believer and the church. Book Synopsis“…I still believe that traditional Old Testament criticism has had the effect of killing the Old Testament for the church. This little tome can hardly reverse that, but it is meant as an exercise in reading the Old Testament for fun and profit. As my mother–in–law used to say, ‘It’s different anyway.’ And maybe it will help. Most of what I do in the following pages involves discussing examples of Old Testament narratives. I have tried to select examples from a broad range of possibilities. By the way, I assume that you have the biblical text handy in order to carry on your ‘Berean’ work.” Dale Ralph DavisTrade ReviewI think Davis succeeds admirably in his goal. I found myself stirred up reading the book. He writes well and shows how, even though there are difficult and confusing parts of Scripture, it is not that difficult to find key truths. This is a very encouraging and helpful book. -- Ray Van Neste (Director, R. C. Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, Union University, Jackson, Tennessee)"Dale Ralph Davis has written a wonderfully straightforward, readable book entitled, The Word Became Fresh: How to Preach from Old Testament Narrative Texts (Christian Focus; pb., 154 pp.). Davis, like Goldsworthy, laments how complicated we have sometimes made biblical interpretation and instead outlines a basic approach to careful, sensible reading which opens up the theology of Old Testament narratives. This is one of those books that makes you want to preach after reading it!" -- Preaching.com Bible and Bible Survey Review 2007"Davis maintains that avoidance of difficult texts ‘gets us and nowhere and impoverishes the church'. His excellent chapter on appropriation/application includes the damming sentence: ‘ I hold a reader who does not appropriate and/or a teacher who will not apply Scripture is practising abortion on the Bible'You may or may not want to imitate Davis Style but if you read this book you will want to lift his structures and insights straight off the page. With many examples, and interesting illustrations, he teaches us how to grapple honestly with what sometimes can be intimidating, difficult and uncomfortable portions of Scripture...This book is not only suitable for preachers and teachers, but can be read with great profit by all Christians who want to get more of a handle on Old Testament narrative." -- Evangelical TimesThis is vintage Dale Ralph Davis - accessible and practical scholarship in a readable and stimulating Style. In 1657, John Owen produced one of his finest devotional treatises: probably originating from the substance of a series of sermons. He examines the Christian’s communion with God as it relates to all three members of the trinity. He assures that every Christian does have communion with God, no–one is excluded and that this communion takes place distinctly with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our relationship with…God the Father is primarily through love and faith.God the Son is through fellowship & grace.God the Holy Spirit is primarily through comfort and sanctification. This was a controversial work in ecclesiastical circles of the 17th century. Twenty years after its publication, the rational ecclesiastical elite were scoffing at it’s contents. Owen strongly defended the ideas within this book, and history has shown him to be right! It is a classic of Christian devotional thought that still influences the church today. This is the original text with a new layout and is fully subtitled which makes it more accessible to a new generation of readers.

That is what acclaimed Biblical scholar, Alec Motyer, sets out to do in this accessible and challenging investigation. The 9 chapters are clearly set out to help you find the answers biblically. It is a real encouragement to be reminded how Yahweh can even work through the lives of secular leaders, just as he did with the Persian Kings, Cyrus and Artaxerxes.Trade Review"Tiberius Rata combines exegetical skill, knowledge of the ancient world, and a pastor's heart in this volume. His explanations of the text are clear, forceful, yet concise. This work will assist the church in understanding its call to godly service to Christ and will motivate its readers to re-consecrate their lives and possessions to the work of the Kingdom." -- Kenneth A. Matthews (Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School, Birmingham, Alabama)This commentary on Ezra-Nehemiah is superbly written, beautifully illustrated and carefully documented. Dr. Rata has provided the student of Scripture with a thoughtful commentary on Ezra and Nehemiah that is wholistic in approach. He skillfully weaves together matters of the Hebrew text, historical backgrounds, theology and archaeological discoveries. Also not forgotten are the practical needs of the contemporary Christian. This is a book suitable for the classroom, pastor's office, or the scholar's study. -- John J. Davis (President/Professor Emeritus, Grace College and Grace Theological Seminary, Winona Lake, Indiana)Tiberius Rata has provided the church with a clearly written, insightful synthesis of the often-neglected books of Ezra and Nehemiah. The author's style is concise and readable; he stays on track and refuses to deviate from his primary goal of illuminating the meaning and significance of the biblical text. One of the most useful features of this volume is its attention to contemporary relevance. Without violating the meaning of the ancient text in its context, the author derives helpful practical insights that are consistent with its original intention. -- Robert B. Chisholm, Jr. (Chair and Professor of Old Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary, Texas & author of ‘Interpreting the Minor Prophets’ and ‘Handbook on the Prophets’)The strength of Rata's work is his synthesis of historical data, past research, and clear exposition of the text. His blending of careful attention to the details of Ezra-Nehemiah with pastoral sensitivity to its contemporary relevance will be of great help to those teaching and preaching an often-neglected part of the Old Testament canon. -- Gary E. Yates (Associate Professor of Biblical Studies, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, Lynchburg, Virginia)Reasoned, researched, and concise, Rata's commentary on Ezra and Nehemiah opens a window on the historical setting for these significant books of the Old Testament. Carefully selected photographs, illustrations, and charts punctuate its pages and illuminate the text's background, literary context, and interpretation. This volume ably addresses the interests of laymen and pastors alike as they study the biblical text of the two books. -- William D. Barrick (Professor of Old Testament; The Master?s Seminary, Sun Valley, California)Tiberius Rata's work on Ezra-Nehemiah should be warmly received by pastors and teachers. His commentary is clear and to the point, yet he discusses some problems at length, furnishing thoughtfulness and insight for solutions. His viewpoint is solidly orthodox and reverent. His high view of Scripture and of the God of Scripture is reflected throughout the work. His work demonstrates competent scholarship and conveys a pastor's heart-the work of a pastor scholar. His outlines and comments are helpful for understanding the flow ofthe historical narrative and are suggestive for sermon preparation. He provides useful summaries-for example, summaries for the chronology of the book-for understanding the book within the Old Testament canon and timeframe. His use of Ancient Near Eastern sources and documents also give historical context for the books of Ezra-Nehemiah. I recommend this work for teachers in colleges and seminaries and also for teachers and pastors in the local church. -- Russell Fuller (Professor of Old Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)

Book SynopsisThis book investigates the biblical and theological basis for the classical division of biblical law into moral, civil, and ceremonial. It highlights some of the implications of this division for the doctrines of sin and atonement, concluding that theologians were right to see it as rooted in Scripture and the Ten Commandments as ever-binding.Trade Review"A book of great relevance with an immensely important message for the contemporary church, From the Finger of God is to be welcomed with open arms. It is a fine example of careful, readable biblical, theological, and historical scholarship that leads to deeply satisfying conclusions." -- Sinclair B. Ferguson (Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi)"It is a given for scholars in a variety of allied disciplines (e.g., biblical studies, systematic theology, Christian ethics) that the ancient Christian distinction between the civil, ceremonial, and moral laws is without foundation. Philip Ross dissents from the consensus and he does so thoughtfully, lucidly, and wittily. Those who are new to the question and those are willing to reconsider their views will find in Ross an able guide through the labyrinth." -- R. Scott Clark"The question dealt with in this book is the relationship between the laws and requirements of the Old Testament and those of the New. Are these still obligatory on the New Testament Church? In dealing with this question the author suggests a threefold classification, and provides a very full analysis of the arguments in favour of that classification from many authors down through the centuries, as well as of those who write against that classification. I commend it to all who wish to live by the Scriptures." -- Lord Mackay of Clashfern"This book is a valuable contribution to discussion about the question of the nature of the unity of biblical law in the context of the diversity of its threefold historical function. It demonstrates how the finality of the person and work of Christ is the crux of the matter and how the atonement has law as its background. A readable presentation of the biblical data relevant to the subject that leaves no stone unturned." -- Paul WellsIn this remarkable work Dr. Philip Ross studies the threefold Division of the Law as traditionally held by the Reformed, Orthodox and Catholic Churches and establishes this framework to be scripturally based. Ross's study is a welcome contribution to this topic especially in the context of challenges to this formulation from several modern authors who reject it as non-biblical, challenges which this study effectively refutes. This study is to be commended not only for its scholarly rigor but also for its ecumenical relevance. -- George Keerankeri, S.J.,"Philip Ross has dealt with issues lying near the heart of the Christian life (and indeed, of the healthy functioning of any human society) in this careful, fair, and, at times, humorous (or at least, entertaining and attention-holding) study of the continuing validity of God's law... I will be frequently referring to his volume in my classes, and warmly commend it -- Douglas F. Kelly"Philip Ross has done the Christian church a marvelous service by on the one hand affirming the theological roots concerning the Reformation blessing concerning the three-fold use of the Law in the Covenant of Grace and at the same time, unfolding for the reader of this book implications and vistas for the effective use of God's Law in the Gospel ministry. Philip has, on the one hand, cleared away the underbrush and overgrowth which has grown up in today's efforts of Biblical scholarship which at times has sometimes superficial and other times speculative for the purpose of novelty. Yet simultaneously Philip has pressed forward with insightful highlights as to the New Testament role of the Law of God as it is fulfilled in Christ pressed upon the hearts of the lost thereby sending them to Christ and used in the Hands of the Holy Spirit to direct believers as they follow Christ in the pursuit of joyful holiness." -- Harry L. Reeder IIIElegantly written, this work is an impressive achievement in biblical studies combining systematic clarity with exegetical analysis. -- Theodore G. StylianopoulosLike me, you may never have thought that the division of the Law into the categories of civil, ceremonial and moral needed prolonged enquiry. When you read this book you will be glad that Dr. Ross thought otherwise. The book would be worthwhile if only for the discussion of the Decalogue or of the fulfilment of the Old Testament in the New , but there is something for the Bible lover on every page, as well as a demanding but readable opening up of a huge area of biblical enquiry, that takes us with profit from Genesis through to the Lord Jesus and his apostles. A real and rewarding mind-opener -- Alec Motyer"This is one of the most important theological books to be published for several years. And it is a book which is desperately needed and which should be read by pastors and church leaders worldwide as a matter of urgency." -- D. Eryl Davies

Book SynopsisThis is John Flavel’s classic work on union and fellowship with God. In a comprehensive and helpful manner Flavel helps us understand better what ‘keeping the heart’ means. He tells us why we should take this commission seriously and speaks about there being particular times when we need to be especially wary of being distracted from our goal. He then shows how we can go on to develop a greater ability in keeping our hearts in tune with God. His advice is timeless, sensitive and profound. Flavel was an English Puritan who became a non–conformist after the ‘Great Ejection’ of 1662. It was 10 years before he was licenced to preach again, and then only in his own home. His writings, when collected in the 19th century, filled 6 volumes. Flavel’s writings are known for their practical nature. He was instrumental in promoting the ‘Happy Union’ of Presbyterians and Congregationalists.Trade Review"Flavel is clear-headed and eloquent in the plain Puritan style, orthodox, Christ-focused and life-centred in his subject-matter, with his mind always set on advancing true godliness, with peace and joy in the Lord." -- J. Beginning in New Orleans, they set out for the Oregon coast, listening to podcasts about outlaws and cult leaders – the only media they can agree on – while reliving the journey that changed Barbara’s life. Jedidiah discovers who Barbara was as a thirty-year old writer walking across America and who she is now, as a parent who loves her son yet holds on to a version of faith that sees his sexuality as a sin.Along the way, he peels back the layers of questions millions are asking today: How do we stay in relationships when it hurts? When do boundaries turn into separation? When do we stand up for ourselves, and when do we let it go?Tender, smart, and profound, Mother, Nature is a story of a remarkable mother-son bond and a moving meditation on the complexities of love.Trade Review'Tender, funny, and courageous, exquisitely written and completely compelling. As Jenkins traces a 5,000-mile route with his wildly entertaining mother, Barb, he begins to untangle the live wires of a parent-child bond and to wrestle with a love that hurts. Their relationship is as complicated as it gets, yet as beautiful as I've ever had the privilege to witness in words. I don't know a single person who wouldn't benefit from reading Mother, Nature.' - Suleika Jaouad, New York Times bestselling author of Between Two Kingdoms -- . * . *'A gorgeously written story of a mother and son's journey across the country, back into the past, over craggy emotional and ideological territory, as they try to find a way forward together. Again and again, Jenkins' conclusions surprised me and made me consider my own "deal breakers." Ultimately Mother, Nature is a book about love, acceptance, and the freedom that comes from knowing, at long last, the truth. As a mother and as a daughter, I'll be thinking about the conversations at the heart of this book for a good, long time.' - Maggie Smith, New York Times bestselling author of You Could Make This Place Beautiful -- . * . *'A beautifully crafted road trip through the sad, sweet, aching truths of a mother, a son, her faith, and his reason; a peacemaking of love unresolved and overwhelming.' - Rabbi Steve Leder, New York Times bestselling author of For You When I Am Gone -- . * . *'Mother, Nature may chronicle a familiarly fraught parent-child odyssey, but reading it feels like a soul-soothing stroll. Jenkins's vulnerable, clear-eyed storytelling is a gift.' - Amanda Montell, author of Cultish -- . * . *'First of all, fuck Jedidiah Jenkins. As a soon-to-be mother of a son, I am completely gutted by this brilliant book. It's one of the most vivid and generous accounts of a mother I have ever read, and a masterclass in confronting unspoken truths; the ones lodged in our throats for years, risking the sting for something sweeter: freedom. At its core, Mother, Nature is an act of devotion and defiance, proving that an imperfect love, 'a love that limps', offers us both.' - Nada Alic, author of Bad Thoughts -- . * . *
