Book SynopsisNew ways to heal the spirit during the most challenging times.Traci Rhoades, author of Not All Who Wander (Spiritually) Are Lost, continues to find profound beauty and endless insights in her spiritual wanderings among church traditions. In this new book, Rhoades encourages readers to explore practices – some ancient and others unconventional – that offer solace for those times when ‘the bottom drops out.’ Sharing what she’s learned about God, Rhoades shakes off the limits of denominational boundaries, making this book particularly valuable for younger Christians or those who are longing to take a deeper dive into their faith.Trade ReviewPraise for Shaky Ground: "Rhoades’s book is refreshing in that instead of writing decisively from a certain church corner, she reminds us that, for those of us who follow Christ and believe in him for salvation from sins, we are all part of the Church."—Englewood Review of Books"Traci Rhoades's *Shaky Ground* acknowledges the uncomfortable place we Christians find ourselves in in the modern world and how the timeless love of God applies today more than ever. Traci weaves hope in her words and a vision of a future for the church as it’s always existed: in the uncomfortable places where people seek meaning, understanding, and purpose, even in the middle of the most uncomfortable places of life." —Anna Fitch Courie, author of the Christ Walk series“Traci points out fresh facets of her ever-growing faith, practices, and disciplines different from those she learned as a child. Her discoveries have not taken the place of her childhood faith but beautifully enhanced and strengthened it.” —John Blase, poet, and author of *Know When to Hold ‘Em: The High Stakes Game of Fatherhood*

Book SynopsisDo You Believe? Today we're flooded with opinions and ideas. And they all might be interesting, but are they true? Would you die for them? Benjamin Myers re-introduces the Apostles' Creed. He helps us to see how difficult and counter-cultural the Creed really is. It doesn't give us sweet, empty words. It's a faith that demands we die so that we might live. In the early church many converts died for their faith. So they needed to have a good idea what they might die for! Early church pastors and theologians used the Apostles' Creed as the essential guide to the basics of the Christian life. The Apostles' Creed has united Christians from different times, different places, and different traditions. The truths proclaimed in the Creed are eternal. Will you trust them?

  • Moral Questions of the Bible

Faithlife Corporation Moral Questions of the Bible

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAre all the moral commands of the Bible meant to be obeyed exactly for all time, or are there some that need to be adapted for our modern world? Scripture contains lots of guidance on ethical issues, including statements about polygamy, slavery, divorce, sex, and other things that sound strange to our modern ears. Even Christians, who believe the Bible is God's word, disagree on whether women should wear head coverings, whether Christians can ever lie, whether women should preach, and whether Christians should drink alcohol. How can we resolve these issues and figure out how to apply the Bible to our lives? David Instone-Brewer helps answer this question by showing how the Bible's moral commands were understood in their ancient cultural context. The more we understand what God and the biblical authors intended to communicate to the original audience, the better we will be able to make sense of how to apply those commands today. In brief chapters that address a wide variety of moral issues, Instone-Brewer equips Bible readers with a paradigm they can use to discern matters for themselves: Is a biblical command timeless or time-bound? If the command itself is time-bound, what is the timeless purpose behind it? And how do we remain faithful to the Bible's commands today even when handling subjects the Bible does not address? The Scripture in Context series is driven by the conviction that there is nothing as exciting, direct, provocative, and spiritually enlightening as the Bible when we read it as it was meant to be read. Each book in the series dives into the ancient cultural context behind Bible passages, examining the effect this context had on what the Bible writers were saying and how we should understand their words today. When we read the Bible in light of its context, it is anything but boring. Instead, God's word can speak to us as powerfully as it did to those who first read it. Chapters are short and informal, so it's easy to read one chapter at a time or the whole book straight through.

  • Surprised by the Parables

Faithlife Corporation Surprised by the Parables

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisJesus' parables can't simply be interpreted, they must be experienced. In the gospels, Jesus used parables to teach transformative lessons and convey deep spiritual truths about the kingdom of God. But he often used them to confront and challenge his audience as well, forcing them to open or close their hearts to the kingdom. Jesus understood the power of stories, but there are some things lost in translation when we try to interpret those same stories thousands of years removed from their original context. The unexpected twists and surprises in the parables might be missed by a modern audience because they're unfamiliar with the underlying points of reference. In Surprised by the Parables, Michelle Lee Barnewall explores the ancient context these parables drew from. These stories of grace reveal many of the mysteries central to God's character, and understanding the ancient world behind them will help us see the parables from a new perspective.

Book SynopsisAt the centre of heaven is Christ, lovingly adored as the forever Lord of all. At the centre of Christmas is Christ, frail and cradled in the tender arms of a young mother. How can the two be put together? Heavenly glory and human frailty? That is the real wonder of Christmas. Pleased to Dwell is an energetic biblical introduction to Christmas. It is an invitation to ponder the Incarnation, and a God who was please to dwell with us. Building anticipation with the great themes of the Old Testament, enjoying the remarkably distinct birth narratives of Matthew, then Luke, before surveying some great New Testament passages, Pleased to Dwell is an engaging introduction to the wonder of the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. This book offers a wealth of ideas for preachers, an easy access mini-reference tool for Bible students, and an enjoyable cover-to-cover read for everyone. Twenty-four short chapters would make a great advent devotional, but this book is not just for Christmas. God's Son stepped into our world and that changes every day of the year!Trade ReviewIn this book we see the profound truths of the incarnation presented in a way that makes the Bible and its truth come alive. And, best of all, it is presented in an engaging style that makes it accessible to ordinary laypersons. -- Ajith Fernando (Teaching Director, Youth for Christ, Sri Lanka )What a really useful resource! As I read through it, I found that ideas for carol service talks just kept leaping off its pages. -- Rico Tice (Evangelist; Co–founder of Christianity Explored Ministries)This book is perfect food for the heart for all of us who long for a richer understanding of the birth of The King! -- Joseph M. Stowell (President, Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids, Michigan)Through a clear and accessible explanation of the profound miracle of the incarnation... An ideal introduction to a profound theme - and a great Christmas present! -- Jonathan Lamb (Minister–at–large for Keswick Ministries, IFES Vice President, and former Director, Langham Preaching)This book is written with clarity and freshness and flows in a way that makes reading enjoyable as well as a blessing... I recommend it highly. -- Stephen McQuoid (General Director of Gospel Literature Outreach, Motherwell, Scotland)What unites the Scriptures? A plan of salvation? A pattern of redemption? Promises of abstract blessings? Peter Mead answers with heart-warming clarity: a Person. It's the Person of Christ who is communicated on every page - a Person who longs to be known personally. Pleased to Dwell walks us through the Bible to see its central Character afresh and to rejoice in His desire to draw near. This book will surprise, teach, encourage and gladden you as you encounter Jesus in both Old and New Testaments. -- Glen ScrivenerA bright and breezy (and therefore very readable) sprint through the Bible's story of Jesus, from Genesis to Revelation. With brief and accessible chapters, it would make an ideal Quiet Times book for the run up to Christmas, as well as a perfect introduction to these foundational truths for a young believer. Thoroughly recommended. -- Mark MeynellI have a confession to make... I don't like Christmas! At least by Christmas I mean the tinsel and the trimmings that fill our shops earlier and earlier every year. But in this easily accessible and encouraging book Peter Mead shows us that the true heart of Christmas, the incarnation, is something to rejoice in every day of the year. This book is for life and not just for Christmas!' -- Michael OtsPeter Mead masterfully handles sweeping vistas while paying close attention to textual details, all with an engaging enthusiasm... this book is a must read. I am sure that many will love the Savior more as a result of reading this! -- Alexander StrauchSince "Christianity is a faith with Christmas in its DNA" (16) and the reality of the Incarnation permeates every day, Mead has written what he describes as a "Biblical Introduction to Christmas". However, more than a mere unwrapping of the Nativity narratives, this book is an open invitation to ponder the wonder that God was pleased to dwell with us. I would recommend this book - at any time of the year! Readers will become better acquainted with the "big picture" and will certainly have a better appreciation and understanding of the Incarnation. The sections working through the Nativity narratives will grip and captivate readers with the reality of the Incarnation and evoke wonder and praise. The Incarnation: a doctrine for life, not just for Christmas! -- Andrew Green, Deacon, Newtownards Reformed Presbyterian Church, Northern Ireland - Writing for Affinity...does a remarkable job of introducing us to the vast sweep of the Bible's story and reminds us that the heart of the Bible is not a what, but a who- a person: Jesus Christ, the word became flesh. As I read this book I was pointed to Jesus Christ and led to marvel once again at the wonder of the incarnation. -- Evangelicals Now... a readable and gripping survey of the miracle that is the incarnation... packed with content, had me scurrying through the biblical texts to see more of my dear Saviour. -- Evangelical Magazine of WalesOffers a wonderful presentation of Jesus that brings together more of the Bible than you'll find anywhere else. It's a tour de force in tracing themes of Christ coming from heaven to humanity. It's also a lively and compelling read.If you'd like to know Jesus better you must read this book! -- Ronald N. Frost

  • Joel & Obadiah: Disaster And Deliverance

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Joel & Obadiah: Disaster And Deliverance

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisDisaster and Deliverance, these two words sum up something of the message of both Joel and Obadiah. In Joel, the prophet begins by announcing a disaster in terms of a locust invasion, which has affected Judah. This, however, is but the pretext for warning of an even greater disaster on the horizon for Judah. Nevertheless, the prophet holds out the prospect of deliverance. In the case of Obadiah, the focus is on Edom. Edom's pride and longstanding hostility against the people of God has led her to be party to an attack upon them, and as a result, she is threatened with disaster. The people of God, meanwhile, are assured of better things at the hand of the LORD.These two prophets and their message of disaster and deliverance will both challenge and reassure all who have ears to hear.Trade ReviewThis concise commentary is an accessible and lucid treatment of the books of Joel and Obadiah. Particularly helpful is Jones's appeal to the underlying Hebrew, cited in transliteration, especially when an important textual detail is not transparent in English translation. Also informative is the reference to other Old Testament texts and ancient Near Eastern culture for clarifying background. This commentary is a highly readable introduction to the books of Joel and Obadiah and accomplishes its purposes to explain the message of these books for popular audiences. It is especially suited for pastors, Bible study groups, or anyone who is interested in learning more about these compelling prophetic books and their relevance to readers today. -- Hannah Clardy, The Expository TimesIwan Rhys Jones' concise commentary is clear, well-grounded in careful attention to the text and also very readable. It will provide considerable help to those who want to get to grips with the message of these prophets, and will be welcomed by preachers conscious of the dearth of good material on both books. -- David McKay (Professor of Systematic Theology, Ethics and Apologetics, Reformed Theological College, Belfast, Northern Ireland)Writing in an accessible and succinct style, Jones introduces us to grand theological themes that run throughout the prophetic writing of Joel and Obadiah. His ear is attuned to the linguistic and literary features found in both books, and he explains them in a way that will benefit both the pastor and the layperson. As with many commentaries in this series, Jones's treatment is fitting for both sermon preparation and small group Bible study. -- Scott Redd (President and Associate Professor of Old Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.)This commentary on Joel and Obadiah is very readable; it instantly engaged me with these sections of God's Word that I have never looked at in depth. The book clearly and carefully explains the context and meaning of each passage, and no knowledge of Hebrew is assumed. There are helpful little illustrations that fit well with the British context, as well as application questions at the end of each chapter, which arc also helpful and thought-provoking, prompting deeper engagement with the text. I enjoyed reading this commentary because the author takes time to stop and wonder at things we often take for granted. Overall I recommend this book without hesitation - it is worth adding to your shelf when preaching through Joel or Obadiah, or if you simply want to explore the message of these books further. -- Pete Killingly, Evangelicals NowSometimes it is difficult to understand the writings of the Old Testament, especially those writings that come from the minor prophets. It is sometimes even more difficult to see their relevance to people today. It is for this reason Rhys-Jones' work on Joel and Obadiah is such a welcome contribution. It provides meaningful material for historical background and theological interpretation along with a clear message of the application and relevance of these prophets to the 21st century church. -- T. J. Betts (Associate Professor of Old Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.)

  • Why Should I Believe Christianity?

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Why Should I Believe Christianity?

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSome people boldly claim, “Christianity is fine for some, but it isn’t for me”. Others feel it is just outdated and irrelevant. For better or worse, everyone in the Western world has come into contact with Christianity: we all have some opinion on it. James Anderson, with a clear, humorous logic, explores what Christianity really claims, and shows the underlying reason and consistency behind these claims. By the end of Why Should I Believe Christianity?, while you may not agree with the Christian worldview, it is impossible to be left sitting on the fence.Trade ReviewThis is a book I wish I had had in the mid-1970s when involved in student evangelism. The author is clear and straightforward, moving through why it is important to believe what is true and consistent with reality. I would happily give it to an unbeliever I had been having serious discussions with, which is, I think, the intended audience. Believers who struggle to find what to say to unbelievers would do well to read this. As well as improving their knowledge and understanding of basic gospel truths, it will give them more confidence when seeking to evangelise. -- Evangelical TimesJames Anderson does a masterful job ... This book will be a necessary tool for anyone interested in addressing arguments against Christian truth. -- K. Scott Oliphint (Professor of Apologetics and Systematic Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)James Anderson is one of the best writers in contemporary Reformed theology and apologetics ... This is one of the finest resources available for presenting the rationale of the Christian faith to an unbelieving reader. -- John M. Frame (Professor of Systematic Theology and Philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando, Florida)James Anderson in this very readable book offers clear biblical answers to the basic questions about God's existence, the Bible as divine revelation and Jesus' identity as God and man, the only God-given Saviour. He does so from what would be termed a 'presuppositional' approach - showing that only on the basis of the truthfulness of Christianity can sense be made of any aspect of the world. Christian truth claims 'fit' the way the world is made. He does so, however, in an attractive way that is mercifully free of the jargon and technicalities that too often obscure sound apologetic arguments. He covers the fundamentals well and provides a clear challenge to readers to trust in Christ. It is a book that can be given to interested enquirers with confidence and which will also help to equip Christians for evangelism. -- The Covenanter Witness (Magazine of the Reformed Presbyterian Churches of Scotland and Ireland)... writes with the mind of a scholar but the clarity and tone of a letter to a dear friend. His brief and engaging book covers a wide array of topics, from discussions on worldviews and evidence to philosophical arguments to inferences from the biblical record-all in the simplest terms possible. -- Brian Morley (Professor of Philosophy and Apologetics, The Masters College, Santa Clarita, California)... The Christian ministry, taken as a whole, must be understood as an apologetic calling. This is why books like Why Should I Believe Christianity? deserve careful reading by pastors and laypeople alike. In this book, believers will find a compelling defense of the Christian worldview and the resources necessary to stand firm in a faithless age. -- R. Albert Mohler (President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)

  • In Search of Ancient Roots: The Christian Past

Inter-Varsity Press In Search of Ancient Roots: The Christian Past

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisSome evangelical churches appear to be uninterested in their historical roots, and so can be liturgically and doctrinally unstable. Perceiving this disconnection between their Protestant faith and ancient Christianity, a number of evangelicals have abandoned Protestantism for traditions that seem to be clearly rooted in the early church. Ken Stewart argues that the evangelical tradition’s track record of interaction with Christian antiquity is far healthier than is often assumed. He surveys five centuries of Protestant engagement with the ancient church, showing that Christians belonging to the evangelical churches of the Reformation consistently see their faith as connected to early Christianity. Stewart explores areas of positive engagement, including the Lord’s Supper and biblical interpretation, as well as areas that raise concerns, such as monasticism. In Search of Ancient Roots shows that Christian antiquity is the heritage of all orthodox Christians, and that evangelicals have the resources in their history to claim their place at the ecumenical table. ‘A must-read for every person struggling with the question, "What does evangelicalism have to do with history?"’ Leonardo De Chirico, Director of Reformanda InitiativeTrade ReviewThis book shakes us free from naive and romantic notions that Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy are the best expressions of early Christianity. For evangelicals attracted by that fantasy, it is an urgent wake-up call to examine the full facts and rediscover the deep historic roots and spiritual riches of their own tradition. * Andrew Atherstone, Latimer Research Fellow, Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford *If evangelicalism is to have a coherent future, it needs to understand not only its own past but also the past of the church catholic. In this collection of essays, Ken Stewart brings his typical combination of insight, conviction, charity, and catholicity to bear on evangelicalism's relationship to history. You do not have to agree with all of his conclusions to agree with his basic thesis—we need history—and to be challenged by the range of interlocutors he chooses—from the ancient church fathers to Cardinal Newman and beyond. This collection should provide professors and pastors with much food for thought. * Carl R. Trueman, Westminster Theological Seminary *This remarkable book seeks to trace the deep roots and determine the DNA of evangelical Protestantism. Using his considerable and profound knowledge of a vast terrain, Dr. Ken Stewart digs deep to show that evangelicalism is firmly rooted in Scripture, the early church, and historical Christianity. His archaeology of doctrine and liturgy argues against the recent loss of confidence and self-identity of evangelical Protestants who may be tempted to seek more 'stable' pastures or to wander with historical amnesia into cul-de-sacs. Instead, evangelical Protestants are urged to share the confidence of their Protestant-era forebears who knew their ancient pedigree and stood on sturdy ground. This is an important and timely book. * Robert M. Solomon, bishop emeritus, The Methodist Church in Singapore *Present-day evangelicalism has a strange relationship with history. On the one extreme, there are those who endorse a 'gap theory' whereby their experience of the Christian life has little if anything to do with any sense of historical continuity. On the other extreme, recent fascinations with romantic and selective appropriations of 'tradition' show how easy it is to uncritically embrace beliefs and practices that are idiosyncratic with regards to Scripture. What is at stake is the historical nature of evangelicalism as such. As a learned historian and acute theologian, Kenneth Stewart helps the reader come to terms with the diachronic dimension of evangelicalism that runs through church history, taking different shades and colors but ultimately responding to the same principles of biblical faithfulness and spiritual involvement. This book is a vigorous and rigorous rebuttal to John Henry Newman, according to whom 'to be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant.' Stewart is convinced that to be deep in history one does not need to turn to Rome (becoming Roman Catholic) or to Antioch (becoming Orthodox). His case is convincing. A must-read for every person struggling with the question, 'What does evangelicalism have to do with history?' * Leonardo De Chirico, pastor, Breccia de Roma, lecturer in historical theology, Istituto di Formazione Evangelica e Documentazione, Padova, Italy, director of Reformanda Initiative *Ken Stewart's In Search of Ancient Roots is a panoply of well-argued, well-documented, and well-written chapters centering on evangelicalism's engagement with its own pre-Reformation past. He provides a compelling case not only for the deep roots of evangelical movements throughout history but also for evangelicalism's attention to its historical Christian roots as the norm rather than the exception. Stewart also provides exceptional discussions on important practical matters facing evangelicals as they begin to engage with church history—matters like the frequency of the Lord's Supper, the apostolicity of infant baptism, the interpretation of Scripture, and justification by faith. In the process, Stewart also takes on many of the exaggerated claims made by evangelical converts to Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy regarding the historical priority of those ancient traditions. Any evangelical should read this book before abandoning the orthodox, Protestant, evangelical faith for traditions that claim to be more authentically connected to Christianity's ancient roots. In all of these cases, Stewart's work becomes a conversation-starter rather than a conversation-ender. He is refreshingly irenic and candid. I enthusiastically recommend this book to anybody interested in the Christian past and evangelical identity as well as those who need to reflect deeply on the vital questions Stewart raises for today. * Michael J. God wants people to enjoy material things – but God must be the centre of our lives. Christ’s radical call to his followers includes the call to let him drive our economic and business life. This means letting God’s justice rule all our economic relationships: treating people rightly; a constant seeking of justice for, especially, the poor and needy; working so that all participate in God’s blessings, including material blessings. In Part 1, Andrew Hartropp looks at how Christ’s followers are to do justice in our economic relationships: as individuals, as households, in the workplace and as church communities. Then, moving outward (in concentric circles), Part 2 shows how Jesus’s disciples can do justice in and through secular institutions, including companies and firms, banks and other financial institutions, then government institutions, and then in the international/global context. The epilogue is on the glorious vision of God’s everlasting kingdom, which both drives us and also keeps our efforts now in proper perspective.Trade ReviewAn accessible and thought-provoking introduction to an important and complex subject. This helpful book will encourage you to explore Scripture, search your heart and change the way you engage with the world around you. * Helen Thorne, Director of Training and Mentoring, London City Mission *Andy Hartropp is well-placed to write on economic justice with doctorates in both economics and theology. He does so with care, attention and insight. Andy is particularly strong in setting out a biblical framework of justice rooted in God’s character, built into his created order and expounded for us in his written word. Much of the ethical and other dilemmas in business derive from the interaction of these ideas. Andy is balanced, avoids the boxing of biblical perspectives into the inadequate categories of ‘left’ and ‘right’ and brings some welcome corrective to some of the over-emphasis in evangelical thought on the matters of jubilee. He relates this to the world in which we live, the challenge of consumerism, high-interest lending, the workplace and the role of the company. Economic justice is a complex topic which Andy treats well and makes accessible. * Richard Turnbull, Director, Centre for Enterprise, Markets and Ethics, Oxford *

It sets out to help intelligent adults make sense of the Bible - a book that is too large to swallow whole, yet too important in our history and culture to spit out.Why do the creation stories in Genesis contradict each other? Did the Exodus really happen? Was King David a historical figure? Why is Matthew's account of the birth of Jesus so different from Luke's? Why was St Paul so rude about St Peter? Every Biblical author wrote for their own time, and their own audience. In short, nothing in the Bible is quite what it seems.Literary critic Simon Loveday's book - a labour of love that has taken over a decade to write - is a thrilling read, for Christians and anyone else, which will overturn everything you thought you knew about the Good Book.Trade ReviewA hymn to an irrepressible longing in the human spirit for higher meaning ... Book SynopsisThe Book of Acts is vital not only for its vivid historical record, but also for the inspiration which it brings to us now. Today's church can seek to recapture something of the early confidence, enthusiasm, vision and power of the church of the first century. Despite all its imperfections and troubles, the young church clearly had been overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit, who thrust it out to witness. The experiences of the early church have lots to say about issues that concern Christians today. What can Acts tell us about extraordinary manifestations of the Spirit? How should churches structure themselves - with elders, deacons, pastors or all three? And, of course, how should the church reach out into a lost world, with the glorious message of salvation? As John Stott concludes: 'The Acts of the Apostles have long ago finished: the acts of the followers of Jesus will continue until the end of the world.'

Book SynopsisThe letter of 2 Corinthians is important, Paul Barnett believes, for its magnificent message that God's power is brought to people in their weakness, not in human strength. This momentous theme emerges in a dramatic real-life situation. The apostle confronts shadowy opponents who had recently come to Corinth and formed an alliance with some of the church leaders and members. His letter is a fascinating record of that conflict. Paul Barnett argues that this heated debate between apparent power and apparent weakness is still with us today. His aim in this exposition has been to allow the timely message of 'God's fool' to be clearly heard.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisPastors face two temptations when they consider church leadership: one, common in more culturally conservative churches, is simply to preach faithfully and assume that that alone is adequate Christian leadership; the other, common in more culturally contemporary churches, is to apply secular business wisdom, but uncritically. The books published mirror the two camps. Both drive a wedge between the Bible and leadership. What if the gift of leadership was a clear outworking of biblical teaching? What if there is in the Bible a consistent pattern of human communities flourishing under the good rule of God’s Word. Drawing on years of teaching and ministry, Chris Green shows us how, as Mike Ovey put it, Christian leaders can be God's best possible gift to flourishing communities.Trade ReviewPerhaps like many others you have been deeply discouraged in recent years by the failure of certain Christian leaders. I confess that on one occasion, after a media release, I was so deflated I just couldn't get out of bed that morning. It's for this reason Chris Green's book, The Gift, is both timely and timeless, for any who long for realistic Biblical, pastoral and applied wisdom on leadership. I found it immensely steadying. -- Rico Tice, All Souls Church and Christianity ExploredChris Green explores the major tenets of a healthy leadership environment and ends each chapter with helpful summary. The writing is evocative and the experience immersive. His chapter on the twelve elements of biblical ministry and the church health-check are worth the cost of the book alone. A good read and one to take any seasoned leader back to the launch pad that catapulted them into ministry. For those who might be weary and need a reboot and for those who are setting others on fire to hear a call to leadership. It will equip those who lead and those who mentor and coach others to lead. -- Rachel Marszalek, Vicar, All Saints EalingA great book, full of biblical clarity, pastoral insight and leadership counsel. -- James Lawrence, Leadership Principal, CPAS

  • The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes: Exploring

Inter-Varsity Press The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes: Exploring

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisRecognising veiled allusions to the Old Testament in the four Gospels has long contributed to our understanding of the Gospels message. Nicholas Lunn takes the investigation of allusion a significant step further in The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes. He explores allusions not just in isolated verses, but rather occurring throughout whole passages, demonstrating that many Gospel episodes interact with specific Old Testament accounts through an extended sequence of allusions. Furthermore, his examination is not restricted to episodes presented by a single Gospel, but includes allusions distributed across two or more Gospel treatments of the same event. In The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes, Lunn offers a series of self-contained studies that bring to light allusions, many of them previously unnoted, that affirm the intricate interweaving of New Testament texts with those of the Old. This volume will greatly enhance your appreciation of the Gospels' presentation of Jesus's life and ministry. It will inform and equip scholars, pastors, preachers, Bible teachers and readers to appreciate new depths in the Gospels.Trade Review"Nicholas Lunn is a careful reader, and he helps us to dig behind familiar passages from the Gospels and discover a wealth of allusion to earlier texts. A sense of the wonder and mystery of Jesus' nature as the human embodiment of the God of Israel is enhanced, as we see how these allusions illumine the events of his life with fresh theological meaning. Drawing on a wealth of scholarship from a wide range of Christian as well as Jewish sources, this fascinating study will also help us to appreciate the unity of Scripture as the gift of a single divine Author. Divided into concise, clearly-written chapters focusing on Gospel episodes, it offers plentiful new insights for preachers and will enrich the devotion of Christian believers to their Lord." -- Stephen I. Wright, Vice Principal and Academic Director, Spurgeon's College, London"This book alerts us to new possibilities when it comes to understanding the meaning, significance and artistry of New Testament texts. Lunn writes with clarity and conviction. He confidently appraises the NT text, drawing on scholarly insight, showing respect for details like literary design and linguistic choices. He hopes that his writing will be faith-building – and indeed this aim is reflected in the tone and emphases throughout. I was not convinced by every premise or conclusion, but I was stimulated by the journey. It is not always my experience that new publications intrigue me and capture my imagination, but this book did and I am very glad I pushed beyond my own approach to the biblical text to listen to the voice of a different approach that opens up a new world of interpretive possibilities." -- Debra Reid, Director of Undergraduate Studies; Tutor in Old Testament, Spurgeon’s College, London"The Gospels and the rest of the New Testament weren’t supposed to be read in a vacuum, but as part of the continuing story of God’s redemptive work as it had been expounded in the Old Testament. Readers of the Gospels who pay close attention to how their allusions to the Old Testament are expected to inform our understanding are reading as the authors intended and find rich rewards in a fuller understanding of each text. Nick Lunn has spent years doing that kind of careful reading and now shares his insightful observations with all who want to learn to do the same. Be prepared to have your understanding enriched and your own reading transformed!" -- Roy E. Ciampa, Ph.D. S. Louis and Ann W. Armstrong Chair of Religion Chair, Department of Biblical and Religious Studies"Another brilliant work by a lucid and clear teacher of scripture. Using his vast knowledge and skills in Hebrew and Greek and his many years of experience in meticulous reading and exegeting of both the Old and New Testaments in their original languages as a translation consultant, Nick Lunn opens before our eyes a completely new dimension of the meaning of the Gospels. Case after case and passage after passage, we see Christ shining from behind the same familiar passages in new and amazing ways. At a time when the discipline of biblical exegesis is freeing itself more and more from the limitations imposed on it by the old naturalist and historicist presuppositions often lurking beneath and behind the old grammatical-historical method, reading Lunn's book, The Gospels through Old Testament Eyes, is like enjoying a cool breeze of fresh air in a very hot summer." -- Rev. Book SynopsisAn all-in-one introduction to Messy Church. When you need to introduce your children's workers, family coordinators and church leaders to the concept of all-involving, activity-based, new-to-church worship, this is the quick-to-read resource that explains it all. Starting Your Messy Church is structured into bite-sized sections which take you through the essentials of how to construct a strategy and put your plans to start your own Messy Church ministry into action. The book includes (among many other things) checklists, milestones and questions to ask of a Messy Church that you might visit, together with an honest and down-to-earth look at the 'Things we wish we'd known' from experienced Messy Church practitioners.Trade ReviewMESSY CHURCH, say Lucy Moore and Jane Leadbetter, is not a children's church, nor a way of attracting more people to a church's existing services. It is, they explain in Starting Your Messy Church: A beginner's guide for churches, a form of church for children and adults which involves creativity, celebration, and hospitality. It meets at a time and sometimes in a place that suit people who don't belong to a church. 'The way you go about making disciples may involve horrifying amounts of icing sugar and glitter glue,' they say - but making disciples is what it's all about. The aim is 'to introduce Jesus through hospitality, friendship, stories, and worship'. Lucy Moore is the Bible Reading Fellowship's Messy Church Team Leader, and her co-author is a member of the team. Their small book is jolly, encouraging, and full of good and detailed advice for those interested in this kind of worship. From the Church Times - 17 February 2012From Country Way - June to September 2013 We were having problems with the format of our all-age worship in a small rural church - we weren't reaching young families so we thought we would try something different. This book is just what it says in its introduction: "short, punchy ....it gets the basics across quickly." It's not a book about setting up yet another children's programme. God is at the heart of it, with a passion shining through for all generations to meet Jesus in a fun and accessible way. This is a useful resource with some practical checklists and lots of encouragement. It sets out the principles and values of Messy Church, and is full of practical tips - about praying, funding, venue, child protection etc.. It shares some useful experiences of those already involved with established Messy Churches. It doesn't pull its punches about the difficulties and challenges likely to be faced but it does stress the encouragements and excitement the team will experience as they too grow as disciples as they get involved in the vision. Once you have decided to give it a go, you are not on your own. The book lists lots of other resources - more books, the Messy Church website, training and regional networks - you never need to be short of ideas and inspiration. We have been running Messy Church now for six months. It's hard work but it's fun. It's encouraging our regular church families and it's involving people who, a year ago, "wouldn't darken the doors of a church". It's an opportunity to share the Gospel with them and to build relationships. Above all - it's messy! Reviewed by Gillian Roberts

It has become a modern classic on preaching and pastoral ministry. Trade Review"The Work of the Pastor is one of my favorite books to give away, and therefore I am delighted to see it back in print. It is a comprehensive study of a variety of Christian women, slaves to Queens, from New Testament times to the present day. The way in which the author incorporates eyewitness accounts, letters, and diaries are both an encouragement to read as well as convicting. Another aspect of this book, which I found very revealing, is the response of each generation of women to the word of God.
