  • The Quiet Path

Canterbury Press Norwich The Quiet Path

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Quiet Path is a book for the walker, or the armchair traveller, the clear-sighted tourist, or the bewildered wanderer. Blending reflection and poetry, it shows how the simple practice of walking can become a quiet path of wonder, and how a brief pause in a busy day can turn into contemplation. It explores how the ordinary practices of walking and noticing, recognizing and writing can help us discover depth and spirituality in everything we encounter and find a deeper awareness of a Presence in all things. This book is not about the big idea, the motorway, the A-road, the bypass. It's about snickets, byways, bridleways and gentle lines across the map. Every page is a signpost pointing down a quiet path, ready for you to take a walk through the landscape of the heart.

Book Synopsis'For anyone who enjoyed Hillbilly Elegy or Educated, Unfollow is an essential text' - Louis Theroux'A moving, redemptive, clear-eyed account of religious indoctrination' - Pandora Sykes'A nuanced portrait of the lure and pain of zealotry' New York TimesAs featured on the BBC documentaries, 'The Most Hated Family in America' and 'Surviving America's Most Hated Family'It was an upbringing in many ways normal. A loving home, shared with squabbling siblings, overseen by devoted parents. Yet in other ways it was the precise opposite: a revolving door of TV camera crews and documentary makers, a world of extreme discipline, of siblings vanishing in the night.Megan Phelps-Roper was raised in the Westboro Baptist Church - the fire-and-brimstone religious sect at once aggressively homophobic and anti-Semitic, rejoiceful for AIDS and natural disasters, and notorious for its picketing the funerals of American soldiers. From her first public protest, aged five, to her instrumental role in spreading the church's invective via social media, her formative years brought their difficulties. But being reviled was not one of them. She was preaching God's truth. She was, in her words, 'all in'.In November 2012, at the age of twenty-six, she left the church, her family, and her life behind.---More praise for Unfollow'A beautiful, gripping book about a singular soul, and an unexpected redemption' - Nick Hornby'A modern-day parable for how we should speak and listen to each other' - Dolly Alderton'Her journey - from Westboro to becoming one of the most empathetic, thoughtful, humanistic writers around - is exceptional and inspiring' - Jon Ronson'A gripping story, beautifully told . . . It takes real talent to produce a book like this. Its message could not be more urgent' Sunday TimesTrade ReviewMegan Phelps-Roper is a beautiful writer, and her journey - from Westboro to becoming one of the most empathetic, thoughtful, humanistic writers around - is exceptional and inspiring. I met Megan shortly after she left her church. She said, 'I want to do good, but I don't know how.' With Unfollow she's figured out how.Megan Phelps-Roper has guts - maybe more guts than can comfortably be contained within one adult human. First, as a member of the scary Westboro Baptist Church, she had the guts to get into the faces of people she disapproved of, gays and Jews and less fiery Christians, and tell them why God hated them. Then - and this is where you and I come in - she had the guts to listen and to think, and to decide that everything she had built her life upon was wrong. This is a beautiful, gripping book about a singular soul, and an unexpected redemption.Unfollow is a book that speaks eloquently to our divided times: the tale of a young girl born into a family whose name is a byword for bigotry and how she grew into a compassionate young woman, leaving her family behind and forging an entirely new understanding of the world and her place in it. Full of insight, thoughtfulness and vivid detail, it is also the debut of a gifted new writer. For anyone who enjoyed Hillbilly Elegy or Educated, Unfollow is an essential text, a testament to the fact that there is no-one immune to childhood indoctrination, but also to the ever-present possibility of profound change.Megan Phelps-Roper is one of the most inspiring women I have ever met. If you want to see how a girl raised on religious fanaticism and sectarian hatred can be cured by the power of honest reasoning, read this book.Megan Phelps-Roper finds a way to tell the story of the girl she was raised to be from the perspective of the woman she became, without rewriting history or losing touch with the earnestness that made everything in her world seem ok, if not downright righteous. Despite a fundamental transformation of epic proportions, Megan's core, her soul, remains the same throughout: kind, passionate, and open. Her process is wildly brave and incredibly thoughtful and this book gives us the incomparable insight into a world we all, and yet, none of us, know. This book will leave you holding your heart.Rarely do you come across someone with the courage and clarity of Megan Phelps-Roper. From her story, we can learn things sorely needed in our age: empathy, openness, and how we can best build bridges across divided lines.

  • The Message of James: The Tests Of Faith

Inter-Varsity Press The Message of James: The Tests Of Faith

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAs a good communicator, James addressed his readers directly and pointedly, with vivid images from ordinary life and attention-gripping statements. This rich exposition brings James' letter to life for today's reader. Alec Motyer is himself gripped by James' energy and concern for practical Christianity. The letter shows how a genuine faith is a tested faith; how encounter with difficulties is an essential part of the growth to Christian maturity. This book powerfully brings out James' memorable themes - the link between enduring trials and maturity; the question of perfection; the good gifts of God; faith, works and Christian concern in a world of human need; the implications of careless and evil words; the meaning of war; the church and healing; confession of sin; and the need for active purity of life. For James, genuine Christianity is practical. It is a tested faith. In this admirable exposition, Alec Motyer captures James' forthright and powerful message for today.

Inter-Varsity Press The Message of 1 and 2 Thessalonians: Preparing

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisHow do two brief letters to a church in first-century Macedonia speak to us today? John Stott demonstrates that Paul's letters to the Christians in Thessalonica offer three key messages to churches at the beginning of the twenty-first century: - a model for ministry, as Paul's self-giving, prayerful love for the church challenges Christian leaders - a vision for the local church, as the apostle touches on evangelism, pastoral care, ethical standards, fellowship, worship, obedience and future hope; - an affirmation of our faith, as he repeatedly returns to the foundation facts that 'Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again.' Characterised by John Stott's customary clarity and perception, this exposition illuminates aspects of Christian life and service that are at the heart of God's purposes for this people today.

  • Losing a Kingdom Gaining the World

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Losing a Kingdom Gaining the World

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisDespite its many crises, especially in Western Europe, there are 1.3 billion Catholics in the world today. The Church remains a powerful but controversial institution. In Losing a Kingdom, Gaining the World, Ambrogio A. Caiani explores the epic history of the Roman Catholic Church. Throughout the early modern period, the Pope was a secular prince in central Italy. Catholicism was not merely a religion but also a political force to be reckoned with. After the French Revolution, the Church retreated into a fortress of unreason and denounced almost every aspect of modern life. The Pope proclaimed his infallibility; the cult of the Virgin Mary and her apparitions became articles of faith; the Vatican refused all accommodation with the modern state, until a disastrous series of concordats with fascist states in the 1930s.These dark days threatened the very existence of the Church. But as Catholicism lost its temporal power, it made significant spiritual strides and expanded across continents. Between 1700 and 1903, it lost a kingdom but gained the world.Ambitious and authoritative, this is an account of the Church's fraught encounter with modernity in all its forms: from liberalism, socialism and democracy, to science, literature and the rise of secular culture.

BRF (The Bible Reading Fellowship) Companions on the Bethlehem Road: Daily readings

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book of daily Bible readings and reflections for Advent and Christmas is based around spiritual insights gleaned from some of the best-loved poets of the past – T.S. Eliot, George Herbert, Tennyson and Auden, among others. While they come from different ages and backgrounds, they wrestled with the same questions that we do, about God, love, hope, and suffering. This book is not a literary study of their work, but a quest to see what they can tell us about life and faith today. Their poems are quoted in short sections, with suggestions about what they might mean for us now. There are so many aspects of God’s love for us and ours for him that are hard to grasp. While we can glimpse only part of the picture, it often seems that, in poetry, our deepest yearnings can come to the surface. As we travel the road to Christmas in the company of these great poets, we will find our minds enlarged and our hearts touched with something of the wonder and joy of this special season. The Bible readings are drawn from the lectionary.Trade ReviewChurch Times, November 2012 This paper's very own Rachel Boulding has produced Companions on the Bethlehem Road, which takes the reader from 1 December to 6 January (the eve of Advent Sunday to the Epiphany). Each day begins with a passage of scripture, taken from some part of the Church of England's Daily Lectionary, out of which comes a reflection, ending in a short prayer. Much unobtrusive use is made of poetry: indeed, I was surprised when I got to the index to see what a large number of authors I had read over the course of the book. There is material provided for groups, but I suspect that this book is more suited for individual use; busy clergy (and others used to the Daily Lectionary) might find this a useful supplement to feed their reading of scripture, during a time of year when reading anything at all can seem to be nigh on impossible. This is a fascinating history of saints and sainthood, and their role within Christianity and the Catholic Church. It explores the religious significance of sainthood, the process of canonisation, and the mysteries and miracles that are attributed to the saints. It looks at patron saints, hero and warrior saints, as well as apostles and martyrs. Special sections are included on the most enduring and popular saints, prayed to and called upon throughout the world, such as Mary the Virgin, James the Great, St Christopher, Francis of Assisi, Joan of Arc and Theresa of Liseux. Authentic Media True Worship: True Worship

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat is the nature of true worship? What are we actaully doing when we meet together for 'church' on Sundays? And how does that connect with what we do the rest of the week? Vaughan Roberts answers these questions and more, as he brings readers back to the Bible in order to define what worship is and isn't, and what it should and shouldn't be. While we may struggle to define worship by arguing about singing hymns with the organ, versus modern songs with guitars and drums, or about the place of certain spiritual gifts, Roberts suggests we are asking the wrong questions. For true worship is more than this - it is to encompass the whole of life. This book challenges us to worship God every day of the week, with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.

She explains the influence of the author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Teilhard de Chardin, Boehme, Barnhart, Keating and Gurdjieff, among others in a philosophy built on the cornerstones of the Incarnation and the Paschal Mystery, tied by the Trinity as a cosmogonic principle, the fundamental generative mechanism through which all things came into being.

It is a chaotic age and I find my soul longing more and more for the shelter of God's love and the anchorage of his word.' Pete Greig, 24-7 Prayer 'You are loved ... This is the most important thing about you. It is the answer to the deepest longing of your heart and has the potential to change your whole life in every possible way.' You are loved. Book SynopsisSo often we think of the Christian faith as an obligation or as a set of beliefs that we must hold. With this outlook, we can lose sight of what is most important: the invitation to experience a loving, personal relationship with God. It’s a relationship we can trust, where we can find refuge and solid ground upon which to stand. The Way of Love set forth by the Episcopal Church's Presiding Bishop Michael Bruce Curry is the journey of a lifetime. It’s a way of knowing God, receiving and sharing Jesus’ love, and being a blessing to the world. Mariann Edgar Budde shares her thoughts on how the reader can come to know--to receive--Jesus more deeply in practicing the Way of Love. Through the seven practices that have been put before us: to turn, to learn, to pray and to worship, to bless, to go, and to rest, she will share biblical stories, wisdom from the Christian tradition, and her own personal stories of spiritual growth.Trade Review"If you are a long-time church-goer, eager for your faith to really come alive, a spiritual seeker who has never really felt connected to a faith community, or if you once were part of a church but have dropped out, here is a book that will help you find what matters most in the spiritual life. It's beautiful, personal, simple, practical, and understandable, and on top of that, it's honest, deep, and true. I've been looking for a book like this for years. I will recommend it every chance I get." —Brian D. McLaren, author of The Great Spiritual Migration"Life is a spiritual adventure. Receiving Jesus: The Way of Love is a beautiful and harmoniously colorful piece of tapestry. Bishop Mariann brings different threads together to help the reader journey in search of, connecting with, or rekindling their own spiritual self. Each spiritual practice is a door that invites the reader to step into to a different space of self-discovery in the love of Jesus. What a wonderful adventure! Join her, yes… you are invited!" —The Rev. Canon Jesús Reyes, Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real "Receiving Jesus is a beautifully written, simple yet deeply profound guide to the spiritual life. I was inspired, moved, challenged, and refreshed by its words. Book SynopsisAn entertaining and highly enlightening expose of ten popular misconceptions about the oppressive role of the Catholic Church in historyTrade ReviewIf one does not accurately understand the Church, one will not understand Western, or indeed much of world culture. Stark’s chapter on religion and science is alone worth the book, since the Church has done so much to foster real scientific advancement. . . Stark writes as an historian, not an apologist; but the truth is not only good history but also the best defence of the Church. * National Catholic Register *Rodney Stark takes aim at one "myth" after another about Catholicism. . . He is like a man carefully setting up skittles before firing down bowling balls of fact and argument to send them scattering. . . Bearing False Witness is stirring, compelling, often convincing stuff. * Catholic Herald *Even if you are not Catholic, to understand today s culture wars, you must understand Catholic history. This book has my highest endorsement for everyone from Catholics to atheists who appreciate brave truth-telling on important topics. * FrontPage Magazine *Rodney Stark mounts an exhilarating display of clay-pigeon shooting at an Olympic level. He fires at a succession of false myths – the Crusades as brutal European colonialism, or the suppression of enlightened rival Christian gospels – and shatters them completely. * Christopher Howse, The Daily Telegraph *Welcom[ing], but also enlightening [and] wholly convincing. * Standpoint, May issue *‘A convincing and enjoyable to read' * The Tablet *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisInternationally acclaimed thought-leader Jonathan Sacks demonstrates how we can build a strong collective morality for the modern era.Trade ReviewAwarded Book of the Year 2020 in the National Jewish Book AwardsLady Elaine Sacks commented: 'I know my late husband was very proud of Morality and would have been most honoured by this recognition from the Jewish Book Council. Though he had won many previous Jewish Book Awards, none of his books had been named as the Book of the Year. This shows the particular relevance of Morality in today's increasingly complex world. In the book, he aimed to show society a way forward, and one which prioritises the "We" over the "I" - something he passionately believed in throughout his life. Though he is much missed by our family and so many others, I am delighted the book has been recognised in this way.'His last book, Morality, while written before the spread of coronavirus, is highly relevant to today's situation. He would not have been silent were he still with us, and his voice is sadly missed. * The Times *Jonathan Sacks is one of the great moral thinkers of our time. His latest book, Morality, applies his powerful approach to the unprecedented challenges of our time - social, political, economic, and above all, cultural. May his words be heeded throughout the land. -- Robert D. Putnam Professor, Harvard University and author of Bowling Alone (2000) and The Upswing (2020)the work will stand as a worthy successor to, and, in many respects, summation of Sacks's impressive oeuvre * Jewish Chronicle *Sacks unpacks a whole litany of dystopian trends arising from our relentless preoccupation with me, me, me * Premier Christianity *Sacks presents an articulate and impassioned argument . . . He is a fine exegete of the Hebrew Scriptures, and his belief in the common good is profound. * Reform *The strength of Morality does not reside in Jonathan Sacks's discussion of political and philosophical theorists, but in those passages in which he speaks to us as rabbi and community leader. * TLS *'Sacks argues convincingly that this pursuit of the common good has been disappearing from the West, and has left us impoverished and damaged.' * Jewish Renaissance *The inheritor of a tradition with a long historical memory of loss, exile, death and mourning, Sacks has things to say that speak more directly to our present condition than anything in recent liberal thinking. * New Statesman *'Let Us Dream thus joins a growing body of Covid-era literature calling for a communitarian reset of liberal values and institutions... Morality by the late Jonathan Sacks have all traversed similar territory. The collective pro noun is back in fashion.' * Observer *And so this last book reads like a summation of his life's work - a propitiously timed gift and a starting point for discussion. * The Washington Post *

Book Synopsis'A lovely debut from a gifted young author. Violet Moller brings to life the ways in which knowledge reached us from antiquity to the present day in a book that is as delightful as it is readable.' Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk RoadsIn The Map of Knowledge Violet Moller traces the journey taken by the ideas of three of the greatest scientists of antiquity – Euclid, Galen and Ptolemy – through seven cities and over a thousand years. In it, we follow them from sixth-century Alexandria to ninth-century Baghdad, from Muslim Cordoba to Catholic Toledo, from Salerno’s medieval medical school to Palermo, capital of Sicily’s vibrant mix of cultures, and – finally – to Venice, where that great merchant city’s printing presses would enable Euclid’s geometry, Ptolemy’s system of the stars and Galen’s vast body of writings on medicine to spread even more widely. In tracing these fragile strands of knowledge from century to century, from east to west and north to south, Moller also reveals the web of connections between the Islamic world and Christendom, connections that would both preserve and transform astronomy, mathematics and medicine from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Vividly told and with a dazzling cast of characters, The Map of Knowledge is an evocative, nuanced and vibrant account of our common intellectual heritage.'An endlessly fascinating book, rich in detail, capacious and humane in vision.' Stephen Greenblatt, author of The Swerve: How the World Became ModernTrade ReviewSuperb . . . Ambitious but concise, deeply researched but elegantly written, and very entertaining, The Map of Knowledge is popular intellectual history at its best * Daily Telegraph *A sumptuous, glittering, endlessly fascinating book, written with passion, verve and humour. -- Catherine Nixey, author of The Darkening AgeAs the historian Violet Moller reveals in her expansive book, the passage of ideas from antiquity through the Middle Ages and beyond was fraught with obstacles . . . The story she tells is a fascinating one. -- Daisy Dunn * Sunday Times *If, say, the streets of 10th-century Baghdad seem a little remote, Moller's travelogue of ideas brings such places vividly to life - and explains how the modern world came into being along the way. * History Revealed *What Moller does . . . is to imagine vivid scenes and scenarios and to populate them with colourful historical figures thinking big, bold, beautiful ideas. -- Ian Sansom * Spectator *Moller's brings the wonders of the medieval Muslim empires vividly to life. -- James Marriott * The Times *Euclid’s Elements is the seed from which my subject of mathematics grew. Thanks to Violet Moller’s fascinating and meticulous account I’ve had a glimpse of just how this text, together with works by Ptolemy and Galen, blossomed as they wound their way through the centuries and the seven cities at the heart of her book. What an adventure. -- Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and author of The Creativity CodeThe Map of Knowledge is extremely important and insightful. Zondervan Bridging the Testaments

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAn accessible introduction to the historical and theological developments between the Old and New Testament.Bridging the end of the Old Testament period and the beginning of the New Testament period, this book surveys the history and theological developments of four significant eras in Israel''s post-exilic history: the Persian Era (539-331 BC), the Hellenistic Era (332-167 BC), the Hasmonean Era (167-63 BC), and the Roman Era (63-4 BC). In doing so, it does away with the notion that there were four hundred years of prophetic silence before Jesus.Bridging the Testaments outlines the political and social developments of these four periods, with particular focus on their impact upon Judeans and Samarians. Using a wide range of biblical and extra-biblical sources, George Athas reconstructs what can be known about the history of Judah and Samaria in these eras, providing the framework for understanding the history of God''s covenant people, and thTrade Review'Bridging the Testaments is an absolutely wonderful volume! Professor George Athas covers this crucial period so very well--this volume is thorough, carefully documented, very well written, and provides everything that students of Scripture should know about this pivotal period. I highly recommend it for scholars and students alike.' * CHRISTOPHER ROLLSTON, professor of Northwest Semitic languages and literature, George Washington University *'Even Old and New Testament experts often ignore or don't pay sufficient attention to the period between the Testaments. George Athas provides a detailed yet accessible account of this fascinating period that helps us understand the biblical material more fully. His presentation of the Persian, Greek, and Roman periods with a focus on Judah is riveting and insightful. I recommend this book to all who are interested in biblical history and theology.' * TREMPER LONGMAN III, distinguished scholar and professor emeritus of biblical studies, Westmont College *'For too long students of Scripture have jumped historically from the fall of Jerusalem to the birth of Jesus, skipping some of the key moments in the redemptive story and the key theological role that these wrongly named 'intertestamental' years and texts play in biblical theology. George Athas invites us into this era and its literature, showing how the communities of the Second Temple as well as enduring exile continue the history of redemption that emerges with the same community gathered around the temple in the Gospels and Acts. Historically accurate, carefully presented, Bridging the Testaments is an extremely helpful invitation to what is for many unfortunately the 'dark ages' of Jewish and biblical history.' * MARK J. BODA, professor of Old Testament, McMaster Divinity College *'George Athas has done us a great service in writing Bridging the Testaments. This is an outstanding book--it is interesting, well-written, erudite, and relevant for anyone seeking to understand either the postexilic period or the social, historical, and religious background for the New Testament. Providing more information and going more in depth than most other New Testament background studies, this volume will serve as a valuable textbook for any college or graduate class seeking to understand the intertestamental period and its impact on the New Testament. Furthermore, even if it is not required for class, it is a great read.' * J. DANIEL HAYS, senior professor of Old Testament, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary *'In his volume Bridging the Testaments, Athas exposes the political, cultural, religious, economic, and social realities of the Second Temple period. Through a serious inquiry into biblical and extrabiblical literature written in Hebrew, Aramaic, Persian, Greek, and Latin, the author counters the notions that there was a cessation of Jewish literature that led to a silent intertestamental period. Athas provides an exhaustive description of major events under Persian, Hellenistic, Hasmonean, and Roman rules between 597 BC and 4 BC. As stated by the author, 'these centuries are laden with fascinating twists and turns, close calls, and a cast of enthralling characters.' This masterpiece bridges the gap between the worlds of the Old and New Testaments and paints a clear picture of Second Temple Judaism during the centuries that precede the advent of the Messiah. Highly recommended.' * HÉLÈNE DALLAIRE, Earl S. Kalland professor of Old Testament and Semitic languages and chair of Old Testament department, Denver Seminary *'In this extremely useful volume, George Athas provides an accessible, highly readable, and comprehensive guide to the crucial period covering the end of the Old Testament era up to the beginning of the New Testament. In a remarkable achievement, Athas successfully weaves the interpretation of biblical books dealing with that later period and essential elements of New Testament background into the broader tapestry of world history of the centuries that saw the rise and fall of the Persian and Hellenistic kingdoms and the rise of Rome. This is a book that will engage both scholars and students, while providing an essential reference work for years to come.' * IAN YOUNG, professor of biblical studies, Australian Catholic University *'Sooner or later all students of the Bible must consider the relationship between what we call the Old and the New Testaments. The relationship is complex, rich, and important. There is continuity (the God of Israel is the God and Father of Jesus) and discontinuity (there is something 'new' about the New Testament). All this may be profitably explored from various angles. In this impressive and stimulating volume George Athas explores chiefly the historical connections between the Testaments. How did the 'world' of the Old Testament become the 'world' of the New? Dr. Athas dispels popular misunderstandings (for example, that there were 400 years of prophetic 'silence' between the Testaments) and introduces readers to outstanding characters and world-changing events unfamiliar to most of us. Some of his suggestions will raise further questions for readers, but all will benefit from Dr. Athas's deep grasp of his subject. The careful reading of this book will enrich the reader's understanding of the message of the New Testament that has turned the world upside down.' * JOHN WOODHOUSE, former principal of Moore Theological College *'Taking a traditional critical viewpoint, Athas provides a useful synthesis of the biblical texts and the extrabiblical sources to weave together an important review of these diverse elements. The work is worthy of consideration as a means to understand the complex picture of these centuries.' * RICHARD S. HESS, distinguished professor of Old Testament and Semitic languages, Denver Seminary *'This is a winsomely written yet carefully nuanced account of the historical landscape of Judea in the Second Temple period. It is unburdened by excessive footnotes, yet clearly informed by extensive research. Athas helps us hear how passages both from the Jewish Scriptures and extrabiblical texts spoke to people in their lived contexts during this period--and makes some provocative suggestions for how several Old Testament texts are actually part of the bridge between the testaments. I highly recommend this book to those looking for a solid immersion into the story of the deceptively blank page that separates Malachi from Matthew.' * DAVID A. DESILVA, trustees’ distinguished professor of New Testament and Greek, Ashland Theological Seminary *'With great detail, nuance, and insight, George Athas walks the reader through a remarkable expanse of history and the way it affected the growth and reception of Scripture. He shows how the texts transmitted within the Bible provide ways to cope with world-changing events carrying great theological relevance both for modern readers and for the ancient communities who experienced them. This book contributes enormously to a thoughtful engagement of the biblical tradition as a cornerstone of the human reckoning with history.' * MARK LEUCHTER, professor of ancient Judaism, Temple University *Table of ContentsPART ONE: THE LATE PERSIAN ERA 1.1 The History of the Late Persian Era 1.1.1 Brief Summary of the Early Persian Era (539–465 BC) 1.1.2 Yahwistic Communities in the ANE 1.1.3 Artaxerxes I and the Fragile Frontiers 1.1.4 The Mission of Ezra 1.1.5 The Mission of Nehemiah 1.1.6 The Emergence of the Samaritans 1.1.7 The Jewish Diaspora 1.1.8 The Final Century of Persian Rule 1.2 Theology During the Late Persian Era 1.2.1 Persian Imperial Religion 1.2.2 The Pillars of Israelite Identity 1.2.3 Reforming Israel 1.2.4 The Significance of the Land 1.2.5 Temple and the Presence of Yahweh 1.2.6 Temple and the Davidic King 1.2.7 Accepting Persian Hegemony 1.2.8 The Wisdom of Torah 1.2.9 The Consolidation of Monotheism 1.2.10 Eschatology and the Promise of Restoration 1.2.11 Jews and Samaritans 1.2.12 Diaspora and the Importance of Ancestry 1.2.13 Pilgrimage PART TWO: THE HELLENISTIC ERA 2.1 The History of the Hellenistic Era 2.1.1 The Rise of Alexander and the Fall of Persia 2.1.2 The Hellenistic Kingdoms 2.1.3 Ptolemy I and the Conquest of Jerusalem 2.1.4 Palestine: Between the Ptolemies and the Seleucids 2.1.5 Wrangling in the Priesthood 2.1.6 Antiochus IV and the Near-Death of Judaism 2.1.7 The Maccabean Revolt 2.1.8 The Hasmonean Dynasty 2.2 Theology During the Hellenistic Era 2.2.1 Political Disappointment and Eschatology 2.2.2 Political Disappointment and Eschatology 2.2.3 The Development of Apocalyptic 2.2.4 Messianic Expectation 2.2.5 Hierocracy 2.2.6 Torah Observance in a Hellenistic World 2.2.7 Development of a canonical consciousness Epilogue: The Beginning of the Roman Era 1.
