Bloomsbury Publishing PLC A Pilgrimage of Paradoxes
Book SynopsisMark Clavier is the Residentiary Canon of Brecon Cathedral, UK, and chair of the Standing Doctrinal Commission for the Church in Wales, UK.Trade ReviewThis book sharpens our ears and tunes our imaginations to hear and see the “magic” of landscape, people, and God, and to rejoice in it all. * The Church Times *Mark Clavier knows what it is to be lost, to yearn for a transcendent God who remains out of reach. Yet as this wise book relates, he also knows what it is to be found, to encounter God in the common marvels of creation. Read this book and then go for a walk with eyes newly opened to the mysteries that are at hand. -- Jeffrey Bilbro, Grove City College, USA'An outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace’: Cranmer’s definition of a sacrament expresses perfectly Mark Clavier’s achievement in this deeply personal yet universally applicable reflection which celebrates the wonderful Welsh mountainscape as a sacrament of God’s timeless presence in creation and in the human heart. -- John Inge, Bishop of Worcester, UKIn this personal and wise book, Mark Clavier invites readers on a mountain pilgrimage with poets, philosophers, and spiritual writers as guides. The result is a profound meditation on time, place, and the communities of life that join us to each other and to our world. Come along! -- Norman Wirzba, Duke Divinity School, USARead this book and walk with the author on a journey that unites heaven and earth. On his hikes in the Welsh mountains, Clavier encounters not some generic "higher power" but an earthy God, incarnate in both the wonderful and the commonplace. In the process he traces a life that is simultaneously poetic, divine, and deeply humane. -- William T. Cavanaugh, DePaul University, USAMark Clavier is our delightful companion as we walk into a landscape that speaks of God found in timelessness and time, silence and words, wonder and the commonplace. He weaves memoir with theological reflection, folklore, geology and history, taking discursive routes to explore his paradoxical themes with flair and imagination. -- Graham Usher, Bishop of Norwich, UKMark Clavier loses himself in the rocky beauty of mid-Wales, and finds himself opened up to multiple layers of wisdom and joy. Strands of place, theology and the natural world are all plaited together through the pages of this profound and deeply satisfying book. -- Philip Marsden, travel writer and novelist, UKPerhaps one of the worst things Christianity has done in some of its varieties is to encourage people to think they don't really belong in and with creation. Mark Clavier has written a brilliant and moving meditation on how he has learned from journeys in the Welsh landscape to see more clearly that redemption is a gift that allows us to inhabit more deeply where we truly are, at home in the grace and mercy of the creator. -- Rowan Williams, University of Cambridge, UKA love letter to God, written in the mountains of Wales, Mark Clavier offers a rare feast of reflections that stir the paradoxes of the imagination towards the God whose creation heals and transforms. An immersion in nature to delight the longing soul. -- Frances Ward, St Michael's Rectory, UKWhat gives A Pilgrimage of Paradoxes an aura of depth and complexity lies in how Clavier weaves together personal experiences in the wilderness, learned contemplation of Christian theology and biblical passages, and a rich penetration into the interiority of the soul’s relationship to the world and the Divine. ... Mark Clavier’s book A Pilgrimage of Paradoxes lives up to its title. * Front Porch Republic *Table of ContentsGlossary and Guide to Welsh Names Preface Chapter 1: Cadair Idris: Encountering God on a Welsh Mountain Part 1 The Paradox of Eternity and Time Chapter 2: Cwm Cau: Timelessness Chapter 3: Dysynni Valley: Thick-Time Chapter 4: Incarnation Part 2 The Paradox of Silence and Words Chapter 5: Craig Lwyd: Silence Chapter 6: Gwyn ap Nudd: Words Chapter 7: Baptism Part 3 The Paradox of Wonder and the Commonplace Chapter 8: Penygadair: The Wonderful Chapter 9: Rhiw Gwredydd: The Commonplace Chapter 10: Eucharist Chapter 11: Inhabiting Hiraeth and Tangnefedd Bibliography Index

Church Publishing Inc Why Church
Book SynopsisAn argument for the centrality of the Eucharistic church in an increasingly tribal world. As Western culture has secularized, the church has increasingly become marginalized and is seen as providing support and optional resources, rather than indispensable to the Christian life. In this volume, theologian Scott Cowdell argues for a recovery of the church as the proper context for Christian faith, life, and mission. In Why Church? Cowdell considers how we have arrived at this moment, examining how perceptions of the church have changed in response to increasing individualism and institutional failings. Suggesting that the Eucharistic Church embodies Christ’s desire to draw humankind to him, Cowdell shows how the Christian life depends on Christian community. Written with adult formation in mind and from a perspective of generous orthodoxy, Why Church? makes a provocative case for the centrality of the church to Christian life. Discussion questions at the conclusion of each chapter offer provocative conversation starters for any adult education group.

University of Notre Dame Press Water and the Word Volume I
Book SynopsisWater and the Word focuses on a genre of literature written for the education of the Carolingian clergy: Carolingian baptismal instructions. This literature has never been brought together and studied collectively in the context of the books in which it circulated. As a corpus, read in comparison to one another, the baptismal tracts tell how baptism was celebrated and interpreted across Carolingian Europe. At the same time, in their manuscript context, they are an important new source of information regarding the nature and the success of the Carolingian Reform to educate the clergy. This comprehensive study has three major objectives. One is to describe the codices in which the baptismal instructions are found, in order to show what other kinds of material the baptismal tracts were associated with and to show where, how, and by whom these codices were intended to be used. Another is to bring together the baptismal texts and study them systematically. Finally, a thirdTrade Review"Most Carolingian texts, so we are taught, are in print, if sometimes in inadequate editions. The proper task of the Carolingian historian is the study of elites and cultural identity, as defined by written culture. Just as the columns of the Acta Sanctorum remind us of texts Carolingian historians take pride in ignoring, so Susan Keefe's two impressive volumes serve as a reminder that there are plenty of texts still to be edited and understood. By investigating Carolingian interpretations of how people were made Christians she may be contributing more to our understanding of their cultural identity than her contemporaries, but she is far too modest to say so. . . . Outstanding in this study is Susan Keefe's recognition that our best clues to the function of these texts in the Carolingian empire are found via an examination of the manuscript context in which her texts circulate. So there are detailed descriptions of all of fifty-nine Carolingian manuscripts . . . together with a full listing of all the later manuscript witnesses which she has found for these texts. They were texts that every priest was required to know, so that the manuscripts are essential guides to clerical culture and the range of instructional texts through which the Carolingian reforms were realised. . . . Water and the Word will still be an essential tool an hundred years hence." —Journal of Ecclesiastical History

Liturgical Press Efficacious Engagement Sacramental Participation in the Trinitarian Mystery
Book SynopsisSacramental Participation in the Trinitarian MysteryTrade ReviewThis book offers a fresh entrance into the reality of sacramental engagement. The Liturgical Press is to be thanked for publishing this book and other such works by young scholars which encourages their professional development and invites a wide audience to glean insight about current research by the new voices in liturgical studies today.Kevin W. Irwin, WorshipWith new insight and informed theological rigor, Belcher advances the now decades-long effort to appreciate and promote the human symbolic activity of sacraments as experiences of sharing in the very life of God. True to the wisdom and knowledge she has gleaned from the field of ritual studies, she delves into the particulars of one rite, infant baptism, to demonstrate how its personal, bodily, cultural, communal, and spiritual dynamics make the sacrament such a prevalent and formative practice for the real-life church in its members.Bruce T. Morrill, S.J. Vanderbilt Divinity SchoolA powerful debut of a singularly promising theological voice. Cutting against the separation of ritual studies and sacramental theology, Kimberly Belcher shows how they can be brought together in a compelling synthesis. Even more impressive than the scholarship is the argumentative power of the text. Efficacious Engagement opens up a new line of inquiry beyond Chauvet and illustrates that the field of sacramental theology is vital and generative.Cyril J. Book SynopsisPoet, novelist, dramatist, polemicist, and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini continues to be one of the most influential intellectuals of post-war Italy. In Pasolini: The Sacred Flesh, Stefania Benini examines his corporeal vision of the sacred, focusing on his immanent interpretation of the Christian doctrine of the Incarnation and the “sacred flesh” of Christ in both Passion and Death as the subproletarian flesh of the outcast at the margins of capitalism.By investigating the many crucifixions within Pasolini’s poems, novels, films, cinematic scripts and treatments, as well as his subversive hagiographies of criminal or crazed saints, Benini illuminates the radical politics embedded within Pasolini’s adoption of Christian themes. Drawing on the work of theorists such as Ernesto De Martino, Mircea Eliade, Jean-Luc Nancy, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben, and Slavoj Žižek, she shows how Pasolini’s meditation on the disappearance of the sacred iTrade Review'This is a thorough study of the true intellectual Pasolini.' Book Synopsis'What Christ Jesus taught is not what is most important, but rather what he has given humanity. His resurrection is the birth of a new faculty within human nature.' -- Rudolf SteinerIn this book experienced Christian Community priest and teacher, Michael Debus, helps readers to understand the heart of religious consciousness and practical life -- the sacraments. He does so by exploring the following questions and more: -- Is baptism merely a symbolic act, or is it a reality that affects one's life? -- How should we understand the transformation of bread and wine? -- How can rituals express spiritual realities?Debus makes these complex concepts accessible to anyone who wants to understand the background and sacraments of The Christian Community. He also weaves together a discussion of historical theological developments with the evolution of consciousness. This is an insightful book for readers looking to understand the spiritual foundations of The Christian Community and its place in theological history, and its role in Christianity today.

Book SynopsisOf the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church, matrimony is the most discussed, debated, disputed, and adjudicated. In this book, Brendan Killeen employs the fundamental question 'What brings a marriage into existence?' as the legal and scholarly means to explore the very nature of marriage within the framework of the canon law of the Catholic Church. Killeen conducts his exploration in two phases. First he scrutinizes the canon law's primary sources - texts dating as far back as the Roman Empire - and gives readers a fresh perspective on the law's historical progression. He then examines the papers from the Second Vatican Council and offers both an objective evaluation of the law at present and some possible amendments for its future. Noteworthy for its diligent research and in-depth analysis, "What Brings a Marriage into Existence?" will be useful to both newcomers to the canon law of marriage as well as seasoned scholars.
