Book SynopsisLearn how to live with the peace and presence of God in the midst of our hectic, busy lives. Spiritual formation is more than just solitude and contemplative reflections. Spiritual formation happens in the everyday, in each and every moment of life.  For those caught up in the busyness of work, family, and church, it often feels like time with God is just another thing on a crowded to-do list.Ken Shigematsu—award-winning author and pastor—will teach you simple rhythms to help you slow down and experience God in every part of your life. Through personal experiences, stories, and poetic and practical meditations, Ken shares spiritual practices that will help you learn how to have a richer, deeper connection with God, no matter your life situation or vocation. In God in My Everything, discover how to create and practice a life-giving, sustainable rhythm in the midst of your demanding life. As you learn how to savor the presTable of ContentsBeginnings I tell the story of my conversion to Christ as an adolescent and subsequent transition from a shop-lifting, drug-using juvenile delinquent to a young adult struggling to follow Christ, but lacking any knowledge of spiritual practices and tools. I set the stage for the reader by discussing the events that led to my taking a pilgrimage to Ireland, which introduced me to the concept of a rule or rhythm of life. Part One: Invitation to a Pilgrimage Chapter 1 Discovering the Treasure of an Ancient Path This chapter explains how, as an urban pastor spiritually treading water in my early thirties, I trav-eled to Ireland and visited many of the important sites of Celtic Christianity and at the same time discovered the work and spiritual disciplines of Saint Benedict. Connecting this experience with the practices of my Samurai-scholar ancestors in Japan, I describe how my pilgrimage to Ireland prompted me to explore the idea of a rule of life, its importance, and its application in my own life and the lives of others. Chapter 2 Creating a Spiritual Ecosystem This chapter uses the image of a trellis to show how a rule or rhythm provides a framework for our becoming more like Jesus. Drawing on my experiences as a sailing enthusiast, I illustrate how a rhythm of life enables us to grow: raising and trimming sails, an image for our participation in God’s work of purification, works in tandem with the wind, a symbol for God’s grace. Using the careers of Michael Jordan and Yo-Yo Ma as illustrations, I show how deliberate practice, rather than sheer talent or giftedness alone, fosters a person’s spiritual development. In order to guide this deliberate practice, I explain the importance of finding a coach, a spiritual friend, and a supportive community to help us build our spiritual ecosystem. Chapter 3 A Rule that Bends but Doesn’t Break This chapter opens by flashing back to a time in my twenties in Tokyo, Japan, when, at the very time others considered me to be a rising star in the Sony Corporation, I felt like I was losing my soul. I describe how, as a result, I unconsciously began to engage in practices that restored spiritual health to my life---I began living by a rule of life. Then, in order to provide a biblical foundation for living by a rule, I explore the life of Daniel as a model in Scripture of someone who lived by a rhythm. Finally, I move to the practical. I outline the different potential categories of a rule: Sab-bath, prayer, lectio, spiritual friendship, sexuality, family, care for the body, recreation, play, mon-ey, work, and mission. I close by giving a series of practical suggestions on how to craft the rhythm: start simply, build slowly, and prune. Part Two: The Core Practices Chapter 4 Oasis for Body and Soul This chapter explores how setting aside one day of Sabbath rest in seven creates a sanctuary for us in time. I show how this day of rest not only gifts our bodies with rest but also offers peace for our soul as we are freed from our compulsive need to define ourselves by what we achieve. Citing examples from traditional monastics and illustrating this theme with the experiences of a student, an engineer, and a parent, I demonstrate how pilgrims of Christ can establish periods of rest in their lives. This chapter connects these ideas about Sabbath with creative ways readers can keep Sabbath, namely by worshiping in community, enjoying loved ones, and recreating in creation. Chapter 5 Deepening Our Friendship with God This chapter describes prayer as a way of growing a friendship with God. I show how the analogy of prayer as a friendship with God helps us form realistic expectations for the difficult seasons of our spiritual life, whether that season is parenting young children or a long season of drought. Drawing on the example of Benedictine monks, I offer ways of creating a rhythm for spending time with God in our lives---even for those unable to s

We rely upon computers, cell phones, and the Internet for communication, commerce, and entertainment. Yet even though we live in this “instant message” culture, many of us feel disconnected, and we question if all this technology is really good for our souls. In a manner that’s accessible, thoughtful, and biblical, author Tim Challies addresses questions such as:• How has life—and faith—changed now that everyone is available all the time through mobile phones?• How does our constant connection to these digital devices affect our families and our church communities?• What does it mean that almost two billion humans are connected by the Internet … with hundreds of millions more coming online each year?Providing the reader with a framework they can apply to any technology, Tim Challies explains how an

Book SynopsisRadical. Crazy. Transformative and restless. Every word we read these days seems to suggest there’s a “next-best-thing,” if only we would change our comfortable, compromising lives. In fact, the greatest fear most Christians have is boredom—the sense that they are missing out on the radical life Jesus promised. One thing is certain. No one wants to be “ordinary.”Yet pastor and author Michael Horton believes that our attempts to measure our spiritual growth by our experiences, constantly seeking after the next big breakthrough, have left many Christians disillusioned and disappointed. There’s nothing wrong with an energetic faith; the danger is that we can burn ourselves out on restless anxieties and unrealistic expectations. What’s needed is not another program or a fresh approach to spiritual growth; it’s a renewed appreciation for the commonplace.Far from a call to low expectations and passivity, Horton invites reTable of ContentsChapter 1: Ordinary: The New Radical? We're so wrapped up in the excitement of the extraordinary---the radical---that we miss opportunities both to receive and to give what's really important. After the initial burst based on big promises and expectations, the result is often burn-out and disillusionment. Chapter 2: Ordinary Isn't Mediocre The focus here is on what isn't meant by "ordinary." Too often, it's seen as synonymous with "nominal," "mediocre," "passive," and "disengaged." My goal in this chapter is to challenge these assumptions. Chapter 3: The God of the Ordinary One of the areas where we see so little appreciation for the ordinary is in the marginalization of the doctrine of providence. In the face of secular naturalism, many Christians adopt a hyper-supernaturalism. Either everything is a miracle, or nothing is. But that renders miracles ordinary and the ordinary empty of God's activity. Everything goes down a notch. To appreciate the ordinary, we have to begin with God as the original worker. Here I try to distinguish God's miraculous and providential ways of working while giving both their due. Chapter 4: We Don't Need Another Hero We start early, in Sunday school, with the Bible as a collection of "Bible heroes." Then we look for celebrity athletes and entertainers, founding fathers and Mother Theresas, to boost are confidence in being on the winning team. But does the Bible itself encourage us to read it this way? This chapter draws attention to God as the real hero of the Bible, along with a supporting cast of characters who---like us---are often unfaithful. Only when we understand that Christ is first of all the Savior of people who don't follow his example can we accept ourselves as ordinary sinners with an extraordinary Redeemer. Chapter 5: Extraordinary Grace through Ordinary Means We associate the Holy Spirit with direct and immediate experiences inside of us. That makes sense, given the emphases in Scripture on the Spirit's indwelling work. Nevertheless, it also misses a lot. The Holy Spirit has always done extraordinary things through his ordinary creatures. This chapter traces the ways in which the Spirit is typically identified with visible and external matter: water, a cloud and pillar of fire, circumcision, a temple, and an otherwise ordinary bath and an ordinary meal with bread wine, in a fellowship of embodied saints who long for the resurrection to come. Chapter 6: Spontaneous Isn't All It's Cracked Up to Be From a fountain of individualism---even narcissism, our culture prizes that which is spontaneous, personally chosen, with results that are immediately visible. Sometimes this impulse affects our view of discipleship. Why do the apostles talk so much about character traits like humility, patience, gentleness, self-control, and submission to each other? And are we prone to adopt, even in the name of being counter-cultural, the contrary characteristics that our successful neighbors value? Chapter 7: "The Kingdom of God Is Like..." Jesus compared the kingdom to a mustard seed. In fact, a lot of the analogies for the growth of the kingdom---and of individual believers---are organic. Planting strawberries with their mom, children often expect immediate fruit and lose interest when it doesn't appear. You can't really watch a tree grow, but it does. We know because Christ is raised and has ascended and has sent his Spirit to graft us onto him as our Living Vine. Once we stop looking for immediate results and evidence of our own growth and the visible triumph of Christ's kingdom, we can begin to care for things again. Chapter 8: Ordinary People The church in the abstract may be fine---the invisible company of God's elect. As the saying goes, "To dwell above with the saints in love---Oh, that will be glory! But to dwell below with the saints I know, well, that's a different story." Especially those of us who have been shaped by the amb

  • Zondervan Conversion and Discipleship

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDiscipleship occurs when someone answers the call to learn from Jesus how to live his or her life—as though Jesus were living it. The end result is that the disciple becomes the kind of person who naturally does what Jesus did.How the church understands salvation and the gospel is the key to recovering a biblical theology of discipleship. Our doctrines of grace and salvation, in some cases, actually prevent us from creating an expectation that we are to be disciples of Jesus. A person can profess to be a Christian and yet still live under the impression that they don’t need to actually follow Jesus. Being a follower is seen as an optional add-on, not a requirement. It is a choice, not a demand. Being a Christian today has no connection with the biblical idea that we are formed into the image of Christ. In this ground-breaking new book, pastor and author Bill Hull shows why our existing models of evangelism and discipleship fail to actually produce followers Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1 - The Gospel The definition of the gospel is the source for discipleship. It defines the life of a disciple, the disciple's purpose, calling, and message. This chapter looks at several of the most common gospels preached, including: the gospel of forgiveness only, the gospel of the left, the gospel of the right, the gospel of prosperity, the gospel for consumers, the radical gospel for activists, the good for nothing gospel, and the gospel of the kingdom. Chapter 2 - The Call My life is an answer to the call of Jesus. We answer with our lives. This chapter will discuss the impotence of systems and why Jesus called us to be and make disciples rather than start churches or governments. Discipleship is the only hope for the world. Only when a person submits to a community of serious Christ-followers can they learn to do all that Christ commanded. This chapter will exegete relevant passages, define terms, and look at various definitions of discipleship from the Reformation, Wesley, Post WWII evangelicalism, the para church, etc. Chapter 3 - Salvation Saved means the possession and the experience of new life, eternal life right now. It also assumes significant and ongoing change into the image of Christ. Additionally, the grand goals of a life in Christ are attainable and are expected as one lives an obedient life. This quality of life does matter regarding the level of success and amount of time it takes the church to accomplish its mission. It also sorts out the reasons that a substandard understanding of Salvation creates a passive worldwide congregation with low expectations and "Christians" who contradict their own testimony. Chapter 4 - Ways and Means The problem in the world is not just bad people doing bad things. It is good people doing good things badly. Modifications of time hardened practices is required if what has been advertized as a new person in Christ and in the case of the church, as a new humanity is going to realized. As it always does, it comes down to the ways and means of getting there. This section will talk about spiritual exercise, spiritual disciplines, and if there are "must haves?" meaning, if you don't do them, you cannot grow because God set it up that way. Chapter 5 - The Church The New Testament shows us the church we never see. The church is as grand as one could imagine and as low and gross as the depravity of man can take it. The reality of the church is that we are people of dust daring to shoot for the stars. The majestic beauty of theological grandeur inspires our hearts and the mundane, the boring, and the vast wasteland the church can become disillusion us. The balance that calls us is to never let the vision of the church we want to have become the enemy of the church we do have. If disappointment in the church could cause Christ to quit running it, he would of left us long ago. Chapter 6 - The Pastor What is the role of the pastor in calling people to discipleship? This chapter begins with several common pastoral mistakes. It draws on some of the background from The Disciple Making Pastor and the Complete Book of Discipleship. Chapter 7 - The End "And the good news about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come." Mt. 24:14 NLT. This not about how the story ends but about the fact that it does, indeed, end. We will also deal with where we end up and why it matters. I want to show that this is all connected to our understanding and practice of discipleship. The end compels us to define what is driving our discipleship. Conclusion

Book SynopsisWhen you hear the word disciple, you may envision people who spend all day praying and converting the masses. Or individuals who have a natural holiness deep inside. The truth is, being a follower of Jesus isn’t a job for the perfect or the Christian elite—it’s something anyone can and should be. (And even the original twelve disciples were far from perfect!) This thirty-day devotional looks at the traits real, very humandisciples have, using Scripture, first-person comments from teens, and questions that help you think about your own disciple experiences. When you think of Peter, John, Matthew, and even Paul, they seem to be heroes for Jesus—the ones we’re supposed to emulate and be more like. After all, Jesus handpicked them to be his followers and ambassadors on earth, and trusted them with everything when he left, so they must have been really holy men, right? But if you read the Gospels and Acts closely, you’ll notice the men Jesus called into his ministry were often clueless, selfish, afraid, and brash, and made a lot of mistakes during their time as disciples. In other words, they were very human. Just like you. This 30-day devotional peels back the holy veneer and explores the character traits that mark all disciples—things like fear, boldness, doubt, laziness, weakness, sensitivity, brokenness, alienation, hunger, immaturity, strength, and preparedness—and uses Scripture, real-world examples, and questions with space to journal to help you see these “negative” qualities actually qualify you to follow Jesus. Because discipleship isn’t something from the first century, and Jesus is calling you to follow him today. You Don''t Have to Be Perfect to Follow Jesus: can be used for personal study or in a group setting is ideal for teens and young adults contains short readings, with full Scripture passages included, that you can take with you anywhere breaks down the real truth behind Scripture to show how it applies to your life today

Book SynopsisThis book is not about old age, but about old people, known and loved or lost and bemused. The heart of the book is the hearing and re-telling of the faith stories of fifteen of the oldest old, all of whom are living in residential care settings. The stories outline the lives they have lived and the impact they have made on their listeners.Trade ReviewMost books focus on positive ageing, and prefer to ignore the challenges of the fourth age, the age of frailty. This book, which tells the stories of the oldest of people, in care homes, through the lenses of chaplains, will be of immense value to all who work with older people. It also challenges the mainline churches to accept the ageing of both society and churches, to address the special needs for spiritual growth and nurture as well as pastoral care of older people. -- Elizabeth MacKinlay"A beautiful and instructive book about the oldest old in Britain today that demonstrates the value of listening and attending to them with empathy. It has important messages not only for Christian churches but for all those interested in improving care standards for the ageing members of our society". -- Peter Coleman“This book will help us all learn how to age as well as we can with or without a faith to guide us. It provides authentic voices from older people, from narrators and interpreters the combination of which make it a rare and important read”. -- Harriet MowatThis is an important book from which we learn that the very old should be taken seriously, listening to their stories is not for them alone and the Church should review its mission strategy to older people. It is a book which makes a new contribution to the pastoral and spiritual care of the very old. Chaplains working with the very old should read it, but its value extends well beyond this to everyone engaged in pastoral ministry. -- Jocelyn Bryan

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Psychology of Christian Character Formation offers clergy and those preparing for ministry some of the potential riches provided by rapidly developing branches of contemporary scientific psychology of which they might otherwise be unaware.Trade ReviewThis is a timely book. The challenge of how radical Christian disciples are made and formed is one of the most crucial ones facing the church today. Joanna Collicutt is an excellent guide to the ways in which psychology can inform the process of the development of Christian character. This book promises to make a significant contribution in this vital area. -- Graham TomlinAt long last, we have a stellar book about the spiritual, personal and theological formation of individuals. Joanna Collicutt is uniquely well-placed to write this prescient and pastoral volume, coming to the subject as she does with all her wisdom as a pastor, priest and psychologist of religion. The result is an outstanding meditation which combines sagacity, insight and practical thinking with spirituality and ministry. In a church increasingly dominated by functionalist approaches to ministerial education and training, Collicutt’s book offers a brilliant and fresh way of thinking about our spiritual formation, which helps us to understand and appreciate those values and virtues that shape and form our character as Christians. This is one of the very best books to be written on formation and character – and it deserves to be widely read and studied. -- Martyn PercyIn this book Joanna Collicutt has done us all a great service. She builds a bridge between the worlds of faith and psychology with compassion, elegance and wisdom. Somehow she manages to summarise the incredible complexity of her subject matter in deceptively simple writing- and make it look so easy. Read carefully this book will deepen our spirits and sharpen our minds. A delight to read. -- Dr Roger BrethertonIn this wise and challenging resource on how faith might form our character Joanna Collicutt has produced a model of how interdisciplinary dialogue works in and between psychology and theology. It is meticulously written as it draws on deep reservoirs of research, learning, teaching and reflection on human experience and our shared struggles of living. Its strengths lie is its careful and intelligent use of the Bible; an accessible description and application of key psychological concepts and a rigorous integration of this knowledge as it is put to use to assist us in our formation and spiritual growth in our life in Christ. This masterful book establishes the authority of Joanna Collicutt as a distinctive, creative and wise practical and pastoral theologian. Read and reflect on these 15 chapters and prepare for a journey of learning and transformation! -- James WoodwardThis is a most welcome book for those who want to grow in Christlike character and help others to do so. In an in-depth conversation between psychology and Christian theology, Collicutt draws deeply from Scripture and Christian writings, as well as from the findings of empirical psychological research. Trade Review"At last, an authoritative and comprehensive study of the connection between faith and mental health which doesn’t shy away from making helpful practical applications. This is a timely book, written by a number of distinguished authors, which directly engages with the various challenges faced by Christians when confronted by mental illness and mental health care. The Biblical material is thoroughly addressed, emotions are sensitively considered, and we are all invited to discuss the ‘stigma’ which has so often surrounded mental ill-health. It will appeal especially to clergy, clinicians and lay theologians, but anyone with an interest in what it means to be fully human and healthy will benefit hugely from the way in which it brings scripture to bear on our everyday experience. I found it full of fascinating insights and commend it very warmly indeed." -- Rt Revd James Newcome, Bishop of Carlisle"Scholarly and yet accessible, this excellent book speaks with a diversity of voices about mental health and illness, and the lifelong challenge of finding our stories in God's big story, and the centrality of Scripture in this process. It will be a useful resource for those involved in Christian pastoral work, as well as those seeking to integrate their faith with their life experiences as someone living with, or alongside those with, mental illness." -- Revd. Full of insight, intellectually robust, and consistently honest about the fragile spaces we inhabit, its authors explore from multiple angles how God can be present within frailty, not beyond it. There are rich resources here for church leaders, counsellors, and all concerned to give and receive support for mental wellbeing, not least in our present traumatic times." -- John M.G. Young, Woke and Christian' brings together young church leaders and theologians who argue that the church needs to become increasingly awake to injustices in British society. It steers away from the capitalistic marketing ideas of how to attract young people into Christian fellowship and proclaims that the church's role in society is to serve society, give voice to the marginalised and stand up to damaging, dominating power structures. Covering themes such as climate change, racial inclusivity, sexual purity, homelessness, food poverty, sexuality, trans identity, feminism, peace-making, interfaith relations, and disability justice, the collection is a cry for the reform of the church to not ally with woke' issues because they are popular with youth, but because they are gospel issues. With a powerful prologue from Anthony ReddTrade Review"The thing about prophetic voices is that they provide deep and profound challenge, upset the status quo and say things that are uncomfortable but that need to be heard. I found this book deeply challenging and learnt something new from each of the chapters. The Church cannot let young people be voices crying out in the wilderness, but draw them in and listen to what they have to say. What we find in this book is young people from diverse backgrounds crying out for justice, a justice rooted in the authentically radical nature of the kingdom of God. They are calling on the Church to do better. It's time we listened." -- Chine McDonald, writer, broadcaster and director of Theos think tankTable of ContentsAcknowledgements vii Prologue ix Anthony Reddie Poem: When Black Goes Breathless xiii Samuel Nwokoro 1.
